What counts as game streaming?
Cloud gaming runs a game on a remote server and sends you an interactive video stream. Your controller, keyboard, mouse or touch input travels back to that server. The result is similar to playing locally, but the rendering happens in a data center rather than on your PC, console or phone.
#1 Best Overall
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Cloud gaming can reduce the need for expensive graphics hardware and avoids many large downloads. It does not remove the need for a reliable internet connection, eliminate latency or guarantee access to every game in your library.
This is different from Xbox Remote Play or PlayStation Remote Play, which stream from your own console. It is also different from Twitch-style game broadcasting and from cloud saves.
Quick comparison
| Service | 2023 access model | Do you own the games? | Main devices | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GeForce Now | Connect supported PC storefronts | Usually yes | PC, Mac, browser, Android and selected TVs | Existing PC libraries | Not every owned game is supported |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Game Pass catalog | No; access is subscription-based | Xbox, PC/browser, Android and selected TVs | One catalog across Xbox, PC and cloud | Rotating catalog and 2023-era limitations |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | PlayStation Plus catalog, classics and trials | No for catalog access | PS4, PS5 and PC | PlayStation games and classics | Country, platform and catalog restrictions |
| Amazon Luna | Separate channels plus Prime selection | Depends on the channel or account | PC, Mac, Fire TV, phones, tablets and supported TVs | Casual play and Amazon households | Fragmented subscriptions |
| Shadow | Remote Windows PC | Yes, separately | PC, Mac, browser, mobile and selected TV or handheld setups | Full cloud-PC flexibility | More expensive and hands-on |
Do not treat these as interchangeable subscriptions. GeForce Now is primarily a bring-your-own-game service, Xbox Cloud Gaming is a catalog entitlement, and Shadow rents you a Windows computer.
1. GeForce Now: best for PC game owners
Nvidia GeForce Now is the strongest 2023 choice for players who already own compatible games on Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, GOG, PC Game Pass or another supported storefront.
You link your accounts, select a supported game and play it on Nvidia’s remote hardware. Nvidia does not turn your entire library into a cloud library: the specific game must be supported, and you may still need to own it through the relevant store.
Why choose it
- A free tier makes it easy to test your connection and a few supported games.
- Paid tiers generally provide higher priority, longer sessions and better hardware.
- It can provide a more PC-like experience than a fixed console catalog.
- Your purchases remain purchases in the original storefront rather than becoming tied exclusively to Nvidia.
Important limitations
- A game being available on Steam or Epic does not automatically mean it works on GeForce Now.
- Queues, session limits and lower priority can affect free access.
- Publisher support, launcher compatibility, anti-cheat and region can affect availability.
- DLC, mods and different storefront versions may not behave identically.
Check Nvidia’s supported-games list before subscribing. GeForce Now is best when you already have a library; it is poor value if you expect the subscription itself to supply every game.

- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.

- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
2. Xbox Cloud Gaming: best subscription catalog
Xbox Cloud Gaming was bundled with Game Pass Ultimate in 2023. It is the best fit for readers who want to browse an included catalog rather than connect a large existing PC library.
The same broad Xbox ecosystem can cover console play, Windows PC access and cloud streaming, although the exact game list and device support vary. Cloud access is not the same as owning every title. Games can rotate out, and a game available for download or console play is not necessarily available to stream.
Best reasons to choose it
- One subscription offers a substantial rotating catalog.
- It is especially convenient for Xbox owners and Windows users.
- Cloud saves can make moving between supported Xbox devices easier.
- It is a strong way to try games without buying each one individually.
What to watch for
- Catalog availability changes, sometimes by region and platform.
- The service was still labeled beta in 2023.
- Image quality and responsiveness were not always comparable with high-end PC streaming.
- Do not confuse it with Remote Play from your own Xbox.
Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming if your priority is variety and convenience. Choose GeForce Now if your priority is streaming particular PC games you already own.
3. PlayStation Plus Premium: best for PlayStation fans
PlayStation Plus Premium combined cloud streaming with the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, Classics Catalog and game trials.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It is the natural choice for PlayStation owners and readers interested in Sony’s legacy library. It is less suitable as a general-purpose PC cloud-gaming service because PC streaming, supported games and availability are more restricted than on services built around PC libraries.
What it includes
- Cloud streaming for supported games and regions.
- Access to a changing PlayStation Game Catalog.
- Classics and game trials at the Premium tier.
- Support that varies by country, device and individual title.
Catalog access is not permanent ownership. PlayStation says games can have published end dates and remain available only while the relevant membership is active. A purchased game, a subscription entitlement and a cloud-streaming right are separate things.
PlayStation cites at least 5 Mbps for cloud streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p on its support material. Those are provider-specific minimums, not a guarantee of smooth play in every home.

4. Amazon Luna: best for casual players and Fire TV households
Amazon Luna uses separate channels rather than one universal subscription. Amazon Prime members also received a rotating selection, while additional channels supplied other groups of games.
Luna is appealing if you already use Prime, Fire TV or Amazon’s ecosystem. It supports PCs, Macs, phones, tablets, Fire TV devices and compatible televisions. Amazon also described ways to connect selected Ubisoft accounts and play compatible owned PC games through Luna.
Advantages
- Convenient access on Fire TV and other supported screens.
- Prime can provide a useful rotating selection without a separate full catalog subscription.
- Channel-based access lets users pay for a particular group of games.
- The Luna Controller is optional; Amazon also listed compatible third-party controllers and keyboard-and-mouse setups.
Disadvantages
- Different channels make the total cost and catalog harder to understand.
- The available games and account integrations vary by country.
- It is not a replacement for broad access to every PC storefront.
- A game may require a particular channel or linked account.
Read the channel details before signing up. Luna works best when its specific catalog matches your interests, not when you want one complete library.
See Amazon’s 2023 explanations of Luna devices and controller compatibility.
5. Shadow: best full cloud Windows PC
Shadow is fundamentally different from GeForce Now, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Luna. It provides a remote Windows PC rather than a curated game catalog.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You install launchers and games yourself, sign in to your accounts, manage storage, apply updates and change settings much as you would on a local computer. That makes Shadow useful for mods, launchers, desktop applications and games that are not offered by a conventional streaming catalog.
Why it is flexible
- You control the Windows environment.
- You can install supported games and launchers yourself.
- You are not limited to one publisher’s catalog.
- It can serve purposes beyond gaming.
Why it is more work
- You must buy or otherwise obtain the games separately.
- Downloads, patches, storage and Windows maintenance remain your responsibility.
- Anti-cheat, launchers, virtualization rules and hardware requirements can still prevent a game from working.
- The cost is harder to justify if you only want instant access to a curated selection.
Choose Shadow when control matters more than simplicity. It is a cloud PC, not an all-you-can-play game subscription.

Mobile gaming: support is not the same as a mobile-first experience
Many cloud services can run on a phone or tablet, but that does not mean they offer identical apps, touch controls, resolution or features on every platform.
| Mobile question | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Android | Native apps are commonly available, subject to service and regional support. |
| iPhone and iPad | Browser or progressive-web-app access has often been important because of Apple platform restrictions; do not assume a native app. |
| Controls | A Bluetooth or USB-C controller is usually preferable for console and PC games. |
| Touch | Touch controls may be available for some games, but many titles were designed for a controller, keyboard or mouse. |
| TV use | Support may require a compatible app, streaming stick, smart-TV model and separate controller. |
| Data use | Streaming can consume substantial mobile data and may perform poorly on congested cellular networks. |
For phone play, budget for a controller, a stable connection and a way to hold the device comfortably. A branded controller is not automatically required; compatible Xbox, PlayStation and third-party controllers may work depending on the service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHatch appeared in 2023 coverage as a mobile-focused option, but it should not be treated as equivalent to a full cloud PC or console catalog without confirming its availability, territory, pricing and catalog for your location.
Internet and hardware requirements
There is no single internet-speed number that guarantees good cloud gaming. Bandwidth, latency, jitter, packet loss, server distance and household congestion all matter.
- About 10 Mbps: may be sufficient for lower-resolution streaming in favorable conditions.
- 20–35 Mbps: a more realistic target for stable 1080p play, depending on the service.
- Higher resolutions and frame rates: require more bandwidth and a more consistent connection.
Use Ethernet for a PC, console or TV whenever practical. On Wi-Fi, 5 GHz or Wi-Fi 6 is generally preferable when the device is close enough to the router. Avoid placing the router behind a television or in a crowded cabinet, and check whether other household devices are saturating the connection.
A fast connection to a distant data center can perform worse than a slower connection to a nearby one. Competitive play is especially sensitive to this difference.
Is cloud gaming suitable for competitive games?
Cloud gaming is usually most comfortable for turn-based games, RPGs, strategy games, single-player action games and casual multiplayer.
Best Value
- Essential 4K streaming – Get everything you need to stream in brilliant 4K Ultra HD with High Dynamic Range 10+ (HDR10+).
- The newest Fire TV experience (2026) – Our biggest update to Fire TV has a new, modern design that gets you to your entertainment fast. Browse dedicated content categories, pin more of your favorite apps, and get personalized recommendations from Alexa+. Spend less time scrolling, and more time watching.
- Make your TV even smarter – Fire TV gives you instant access to a world of content, tailor-made recommendations, and Alexa, all backed by fast performance.
- All your favorite apps in one place – Experience endless entertainment with access to Prime Video, Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Apple TV+, HBO Max, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+, and thousands more. Easily discover what to watch from hundreds of thousands of movies and TV episodes (subscription fees may apply), including free, ad-supported content.
- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
It is less suitable for competitive shooters, fighting games, rhythm games, high-level racing and esports. The issue is not just download speed: input must travel to the server, the game must respond, the resulting frame must be rendered and the video must return to you. Jitter, packet loss, queue time and compression can make the experience worse even when a speed test looks excellent.
Test your actual device, network and location before committing to a long subscription. A service that feels responsive for a turn-based RPG may not feel precise enough for a fighting game.
How to choose the right service
- You own games on Steam, Epic or Ubisoft: start with GeForce Now, then check whether your specific games are supported.
- You want a large included catalog: choose Xbox Cloud Gaming through Game Pass Ultimate if its catalog and supported devices fit you.
- You mainly want PlayStation games or classics: consider PlayStation Plus Premium, after checking country and title availability.
- You use Prime or Fire TV: compare Luna’s Prime selection and channels with the games you actually want.
- You want Windows, mods and launchers: choose Shadow only if you are comfortable installing, updating and troubleshooting games yourself.
- You mainly play on a phone: prioritize controller support, browser or app access, data use and network stability before comparing catalogs.
Common problems and recovery steps
A game is missing
Check the provider’s supported-games list, storefront version, country and subscription tier. Owning the game is not enough for GeForce Now, and catalog access is not permanent on subscription services.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The wrong launcher or version appears
Confirm which storefront account is linked and whether the service supports the edition you own. DLC and regional versions may not match.
The controller is not detected
Pair it before launching the game, update its firmware, try a wired connection and check whether the service supports keyboard and mouse or requires a controller for that title.
The queue is too long
Free or lower-priority tiers can have queues. Try a paid tier, a different time of day or another service, but do not assume the paid experience will have identical performance in every region.
Video quality suddenly drops
Check Wi-Fi signal, household congestion, packet loss and data-saving settings. Ethernet can help on fixed devices. Lowering the target resolution may produce a more stable picture.
Your save is missing
Verify that you signed into the correct publisher or storefront account and that cloud synchronization completed. Subscription access and save-data behavior vary by service and game.
The service reports an unsupported region
Availability is country-specific. Do not assume a VPN will be supported; it can increase latency and may conflict with provider or publisher terms.
What cloud gaming cannot replace
- It does not provide every game in a Steam, Xbox or PlayStation account.
- It does not guarantee low latency during peak hours or over cellular networks.
- It does not preserve subscription access after a title leaves a catalog.
- It does not make purchases and streaming rights identical.
- It may not support local multiplayer accessories, mods, anti-cheat systems or specialist hardware.
- It cannot help when the internet connection or service is unavailable.
Final rankings by use case
- Best for streaming owned PC games: GeForce Now.
- Best included catalog: Xbox Cloud Gaming through Game Pass Ultimate.
- Best for PlayStation games and classics: PlayStation Plus Premium.
- Best for Prime and Fire TV households: Amazon Luna.
- Best full cloud computer: Shadow.
- Best mobile approach: the service whose catalog, controller support and browser or app access fit your phone and region—not automatically the service with the biggest library.
- Best low-risk trial: GeForce Now’s free tier, provided your games are supported and you can tolerate its limits.
The right choice depends first on how you access games. Check the exact titles, storefronts, country, device and connection before paying; those details matter more than a service’s headline library size.
