Which GameCube-to-Switch adapter should you choose?
For a clearly specified four-controller option, consider the MAYFLASH W012 four-port GameCube adapter. MAYFLASH lists compatibility with Switch 2, Switch, Switch OLED, Wii U and Windows PC, along with two USB plugs, a PC/Wii U/NS mode switch and vibration feedback. These are manufacturer-listed features, not independent test results.
Nintendo’s GameCube Controller Adapter is the official category reference. Nintendo says an adapter is required and sold separately, and documents how to use one with Switch. Its support pages do not establish the adapter’s current price, stock or retail availability.

No independent latency or hands-on reliability testing is established here, so there is no sound basis to rank these adapters as faster or “lag-free.”

Check compatibility and firmware before buying or updating
Nintendo’s documented compatibility
Nintendo says GameCube controllers are supported on Switch consoles running system menu version 5.0.0 or higher. Its documented connection is through the dock in TV mode; it does not document a portable setup in the cited instructions. Nintendo’s setup guide provides the connection steps.
MAYFLASH W012 firmware
MAYFLASH lists W012 firmware V10 with macOS and Smash Box support. Its notes say V09 addressed recognition and duplicated-input issues following Switch updates 19.0.0 and 19.0.1. The manufacturer says the V09 update must be installed on Windows, cannot be downgraded, and advises some users not to update when their current version works well. Check the firmware version on your own adapter and follow the exact instructions for that version rather than updating by default. See MAYFLASH’s product and firmware information.

Set up one adapter on Switch
- Place the Switch in its dock and use TV mode.
- Connect both USB plugs from the adapter to the Switch dock.
- Connect the GameCube controller to an adapter port.
- Press any button on the controller to register it.
Nintendo says the connected GameCube controller appears as a standard USB controller. Vibration depends on supported software, such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. For the W012 specifically, MAYFLASH labels the modes PC and Wii U/NS; its instructions say the black USB plug connects to the system and the gray plug can be connected when vibration feedback is needed.
Connect five to eight controllers
Nintendo says one adapter supports up to four controllers. For five or more, Nintendo’s method uses two adapters connected through a self-powered USB hub; connect both USB plugs from each adapter to the hub. The hub must supply at least 500 mA per USB port, and Nintendo cautions that it cannot guarantee every hub will work. Nintendo specifies a maximum of two adapters on Switch or Switch 2.

Troubleshoot an adapter that is not recognized
If Nintendo’s adapter is not recognized, Nintendo says it is aware of recognition problems following system version 19.0.0 and advises updating the console. Nintendo also says a licensed replacement may resolve issues when the accessory is unlicensed. Follow Nintendo’s recognition troubleshooting guidance before assuming the controller itself is faulty.
