Road 96 is the closest released game to AfterZero: The Last Drive if you want travel, character encounters and consequential choices. Firewatch is the better alternative for radio dialogue, isolation and environmental mystery, although it has no driving. AfterZero itself is not available yet: 3DClouds has announced a 2027 release for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.
What makes AfterZero different?
AfterZero: The Last Drive is planned as a single-player driving-survival adventure from Italian studio 3DClouds. Its setting is an apparently endless winter across a post-industrial wasteland. You drive an upgradable off-road vehicle, search abandoned places for resources, improve the vehicle’s tools, help other survivors and attempt to reach safety.

The announced design combines several systems that are usually separated across different games:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Driving as the main expedition tool: the Old Grizzly carries you between abandoned cities, frozen lakes and mountain forests.
- Scavenging and crafting: the listed examples include grappling hooks, ice tires and nitrogen guns.
- A survivor base: you return to the Firewall camp, where your progress includes repairing an old train.
- A mystery: the journey investigates an old artificial intelligence controlling machines in the wasteland.
- Choices and exploration: prerelease metadata describes the game as story-rich, choices-matter, open-world, linear, narrative, management and crafting.
Those tags are indicative rather than a final feature guarantee because the game is still in development. CEO Francesco Bruschi described the intended mix as “exploration, puzzle solving, upgradeable car and base elements and frozen peril.” That combination is why no existing game is a perfect one-to-one substitute. The recommendations below match different parts of the design instead.

Road 96 is the closest released match
Why it belongs on an AfterZero list
Road 96 makes movement through an uncertain landscape the spine of the story. Its official description presents a journey toward freedom in which you hitchhike, meet recurring and interconnected characters, make choices on every mile and travel across thousands of possible roads. That structure overlaps with AfterZero’s most important narrative idea: the trip itself is the framework for encounters, discoveries and decisions.
If what you imagined from AfterZero was a long journey where each stop can introduce a person, problem or consequence, Road 96 is the strongest game to play now. It treats travel as more than a transition between missions. The route determines who you meet and what kind of story develops, giving the road-trip format replay value that a fixed sequence would not have.
How its systems differ
Road 96 is not a survival-driving simulator. You do not take an upgradable off-road vehicle through frozen lakes, craft vehicle tools or maintain a survivor base. Its travel is built around hitchhiking and procedural variation rather than one persistent car and a home camp. The game therefore matches AfterZero’s narrative travel and choice-driven encounters, not its mechanical survival layer.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThat distinction matters when choosing between the two. AfterZero promises a loop of leaving camp, gathering resources, improving the Old Grizzly and returning to support the Firewall survivors. Road 96 instead emphasizes the people and situations encountered during each attempt to move along the road. The tension comes from decisions and changing circumstances rather than weather exposure, equipment condition or crafting recipes.
Who should choose Road 96?
- Choose it if branching decisions are more important to you than detailed vehicle systems.
- Choose it if you want a road-trip structure that can vary across runs.
- Choose it if recurring characters and the consequences of meeting them are the main attraction.
- Choose it if you need a finished game while waiting for AfterZero’s planned 2027 release.
Road 96 was released by DigixArt and published by THQ Nordic on August 16, 2021. Its established release makes it the practical recommendation for the choice-driven side of the comparison, while AfterZero remains an announced design whose final balance of driving, survival and narrative has not yet been demonstrated in a finished version.
Firewatch is the strongest story-and-exploration alternative
What it shares with AfterZero
Firewatch follows Henry, a fire lookout exploring the Wyoming wilderness. His main human connection is supervisor Delilah, reached over a handheld radio. The official FAQ describes the game as “incredibly story driven,” with a living relationship and a tense mystery at its center.
That makes Firewatch a good recommendation for the emotional and investigative side of AfterZero. Both settings use isolation to make the environment feel significant. You learn about the world by moving through it, noticing unusual details and communicating with someone who is not physically present. The landscape is not just scenery: it is where clues, uncertainty and character decisions gain meaning.

- Road 96 is a crazy, beautiful road-trip. The discovery of exciting places, and unusual people on your own personal journey to freedom.
- An ever-evolving story-driven adventure inspired by Tarantino, The Coen Brothers, and Bong Joon-ho. Made by the award-winning creators of Valiant Hearts and Memories Retold.
- Moments of action, exploration, contemplative melancholy, human encounters and wacky situations. Set against a backdrop of authoritarian rule and oppression.
- A stunning visual style, a soundtrack filled with 90s hits, and thousands routes through the game combine so each player can create their own unique stories on Road 96.
Where the comparison stops
Firewatch has no driving, vehicle upgrading, scavenging, crafting or survivor-camp management. It is a directed first-person story rather than an open-world survival route. The wilderness is curated for a specific mystery and relationship, while AfterZero is announced around a broader wasteland expedition involving an off-road vehicle, resource gathering and a camp that you revisit.
Because Firewatch is more focused, it is the better choice when you want a compact narrative experience in which dialogue and atmosphere lead every scene. It is not the right substitute if your priority is tuning a vehicle, planning supply runs or dealing with frozen-weather hazards.
Who should choose Firewatch?
- Choose it for radio dialogue, character chemistry and a steadily unfolding mystery.
- Choose it if walking through a carefully designed landscape is enough; driving is not part of its appeal.
- Choose it if you prefer directed progression over procedural roads or survival management.
- Choose it for its established availability on Windows, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
AfterZero, Road 96 and Firewatch compared by the features that matter
Driving centrality
AfterZero puts the vehicle at the center of the expedition. The Old Grizzly is described as upgradable and equipped for hazards, with examples such as ice tires and nitrogen guns. Driving is therefore both transportation and progression: improving the vehicle should expand what you can attempt in the wasteland.
Road 96 uses travel as its narrative frame, but not as a vehicle-maintenance system. The key question is who and what you encounter on the way, not which parts you install. Firewatch has no driving at all. This gives the three games a clear progression from mechanical vehicle focus, to travel-focused storytelling, to walking-based exploration.
World structure
The announced AfterZero world is a frozen wasteland with abandoned cities, lakes and forests, described in prerelease metadata as open-world while also carrying a linear tag. Those labels should be treated cautiously until the final game shows how free exploration and story progression coexist.
Road 96 is built around many possible roads and procedural variation. Its world structure supports repeat journeys and different combinations of encounters. Firewatch is the most curated of the three: a defined Wyoming wilderness designed to guide discovery through a focused mystery.
Survival and management
AfterZero is the only one of these recommendations announced with a full survival-management layer. Its loop includes scavenging, crafting, vehicle tools, frozen peril and returning to the Firewall survivor camp. Repairing an old train gives the base a concrete long-term project in addition to personal vehicle upgrades.

- An ever-evolving story-driven adventure inspired by tarantino, the coen Brothers, and bong joon-ho. Made by the award-winning creators of valiant hearts and memories retold.

- A stunning visual style, a soundtrack filled with 90S hits, and thousands routes through the game combine so each player can create their own unique stories on road 96.
Road 96 emphasizes choices and encounters rather than resource upkeep. Firewatch emphasizes movement, observation and dialogue. Neither has an equivalent to AfterZero’s combination of resource collection, crafting and camp responsibilities.

Narrative agency
Road 96 makes agency explicit: choices alter the journey and the people you encounter, and its many possible roads support replayable variation. Firewatch is more directed. Its story advances through exploration, conversations and discoveries within a designed sequence.
AfterZero is tagged choices-matter, but that is prerelease metadata rather than a demonstrated final system. Its announced story also includes a specific objective—reaching safety—and a mystery involving an AI controlling machines. Until release, it is safest to describe its agency as planned rather than assume a particular branching structure.
Availability
Road 96 and Firewatch are released games. AfterZero is not yet available and is targeted for 2027. 3DClouds lists PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch, while the Epic listing gives a Q1 2027 window. Release timing and platform availability can change before launch.

If you want choices to shape a road trip
Start with Road 96. It is the only released option here that explicitly makes decisions on the road and the people you meet the core of its structure. Its procedural possibilities make it more suitable than Firewatch for players who want to see how a different route changes the journey.
If you want a mystery carried by dialogue
Choose Firewatch. The radio link between Henry and Delilah supplies the human focus, while the wilderness provides the setting for a tense investigation. You will give up driving and survival systems, but you gain a tightly authored relationship-driven story.
If you want a car to be your main tool
Wait for AfterZero rather than treating either released game as a mechanical replacement. The Old Grizzly is announced as an upgradable off-road vehicle used to cross frozen terrain, gather supplies and solve problems. Neither Road 96 nor Firewatch offers that vehicle-centered progression.
Rank #4
- Moments of action, exploration, contemplative melancholy, human encounters and wacky situations.
- Set against a backdrop of authoritarian rule and oppression.
- A stunning visual style and soundtrack filled with 90s hits
- Thousands of routes through the game combined so each player can create their own unique stories.
If you want survival and a home base
AfterZero is the only title in this comparison announced with scavenging, crafting, a survivor camp and a repair project. The Firewall camp and old train suggest a return-and-improve rhythm: venture out, collect what is needed, enhance your capabilities and support the people sheltering there. That loop is part of the announced concept, not a feature confirmed by a released build.
If you need something playable now
Road 96 and Firewatch are the available choices. Road 96 was released in 2021 and offers the closest match to a journey shaped by encounters. Firewatch is an established release across six listed platform families and is the better immediate choice for exploration and narrative atmosphere.
What an AfterZero expedition is expected to involve
The announced features imply a practical cycle for the finished game. The exact mission structure and resource rules have not been published, so the following is a reading of the described loop rather than a promise of specific objectives.
- Leave the Firewall camp. The camp is the stated survivor hub and the place you return to between expeditions.
- Drive the Old Grizzly into the wasteland. Abandoned cities, frozen lakes and mountain forests are named as environments to explore.
- Scavenge useful materials. Resources are needed for the survival and improvement systems described for the game.
- Handle obstacles with vehicle tools. Grappling hooks, ice tires and nitrogen guns are listed examples of craftable equipment.
- Investigate places and machines. Exploration, puzzle solving and the mystery of an old AI are part of the announced narrative hook.
- Return and improve. Vehicle upgrades, survivor assistance and work on the old train give the camp a continuing purpose.
- Push toward safety. Reaching safety is the broad journey objective described for the player.
This is why Road 96 and Firewatch should be viewed as partial matches. Road 96 covers the journey and decisions; Firewatch covers isolation, communication and environmental mystery; AfterZero is designed to combine those ideas with vehicle progression and survival management.
Release status and how to interpret the recommendations
AfterZero is an announced game, not a released one. 3DClouds’ target is 2027, and the Epic listing specifies Q1 2027. The announced platforms are PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. A target window is not a guarantee, so treat any current comparison as a guide to the concept rather than evidence that the final game will match every listed tag.
SteamDB metadata includes exploration, driving, action-adventure, third-person, post-apocalyptic, base-building, choices-matter, story-rich, linear, narrative, open-world, snow, management, sci-fi and crafting. Those labels help explain the intended audience, but prerelease tags can change and do not establish the depth of any individual system.

For a purchase today, Road 96 is the recommendation when your priority is a story-driven journey with choices. Firewatch is the recommendation when your priority is a focused exploration mystery and radio relationship. For the specific combination of an upgradable vehicle, frozen survival, crafting and a survivor base, the honest answer is to wishlist AfterZero and wait for more concrete launch information.
Bottom line
Play Road 96 for the closest released interpretation of a choice-driven road journey. Play Firewatch for story, atmosphere, radio dialogue and exploration without driving. Keep AfterZero: The Last Drive on your watchlist if the defining appeal is driving an upgradeable vehicle through a frozen wasteland while scavenging, crafting, helping survivors and uncovering an AI mystery. No currently released comparison in this list reproduces all of those systems together.
