Hades is the best all-round game to play while you wait for Angelfall, thanks to its repeatable action runs, permanent upgrades and substantial story. Choose Vampire Survivors for short, horde-destroying sessions with a gothic tone, or Diablo IV for a larger dark-fantasy loot RPG with classes, gear and online co-op.
Angelfall is still listed on Steam as “Coming soon,” so these are games you can play now rather than substitutes for a released version. Its announced combination of reverse-horror perspective, branching upgrades, build synergies and optional co-op gives each recommendation a different point of comparison.

What Angelfall is promising
Angelfall is an upcoming roguelike reverse-horror game from The3rd.One Games. Instead of defending humanity, you control a powerful Archdemon, slaughter humans and holy warriors, harvest Souls and become stronger over successive runs. The official Steam description sums up the premise this way:

— The3rd.One Games, Steam store description
The announced systems include a branching passive tree called Corruption, skill and ability choices, rerolls, runes that can be altered at the Hellforge, build combinations and bosses. The listing also describes single-player play plus online and LAN co-op. Because the release status remains “Coming soon,” no recommendation below should be read as evidence that Angelfall has launched.

Hades: the best overall Angelfall substitute
Hades is the closest structural replacement when your priority is the rhythm of entering a dangerous area, assembling a build during the attempt, dying or escaping, and returning with permanent progress. Each run is part of a larger arc rather than an isolated challenge: successful and failed attempts unlock upgrades, new combinations and further story events.
Why its run loop works
Steam describes an Underworld escape loop in which every attempt can lead to permanent upgrades and new build combinations. That gives Hades the same broad appeal that Angelfall’s Corruption tree, abilities, rerolls and rune modifications are intended to provide. You make meaningful choices during a run, then use what you learned and earned to approach the next one differently.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe important distinction is where the motivation comes from. Hades surrounds its combat loop with story events and relationships, so a failed run still advances the narrative experience. The cast is fully voiced, and the game treats conversations and character development as a core part of the progression rather than a reward bolted onto the end.
Combat and build decisions
The combat is fast hack-and-slash action. You are constantly deciding whether to pursue immediate damage, a safer defensive option or a combination that becomes stronger later in the run. That makes it a good answer to “Which dark-fantasy roguelike has the best combat?” when the question includes responsiveness and variety rather than sheer enemy count.
Rank #2
- Battle beyond the Underworld using dark sorcery to take on the Titan of Time in this bewitching sequel to the award-winning rogue-like dungeon crawler.
Hades is mythological rather than demonic, and you do not play an Archdemon rampaging through human armies. Its single-player focus also differs from Angelfall’s announced online and LAN co-op. Those are substantial setting and multiplayer differences, but the run-to-run structure and persistent growth are unusually close.
Who should choose Hades?
- Choose it if a memorable story and character relationships matter as much as action.
- Choose it if you want each run to teach you something while still contributing to permanent progress.
- Choose it if you prefer a focused single-player experience rather than a persistent online RPG.
Hades released on 17 September 2020. Steam showed 98% positive English reviews from 143,041 reviews at the time of the 2026 listing snapshot.

Vampire Survivors is the clearest match for the fantasy of destroying huge numbers of enemies and watching a build snowball beyond its starting power. Steam describes a gothic-horror casual game with roguelite elements in which you survive until dawn while choices let you overwhelm hundreds of monsters.
Why it matches Angelfall’s horde fantasy
If the phrase “fight hordes” is the part of Angelfall that caught your attention, this is the most direct recommendation. Enemy density is the point: the screen fills with threats, your weapons accumulate effects and a successful run turns a fragile start into a sustained wave-clearing machine.
The game’s controls and presentation are intentionally simpler than the announced Angelfall format. Its pixel-art view and auto-attack design reduce the amount of direct aiming and moment-to-moment ability management. You spend more time choosing upgrades, positioning for survival and deciding which combinations will scale than manually chaining an action-game moveset.
Rank #3
- As the immortal Prince of the Underworld, you'll wield the powers and mythic weapons of Olympus to break free from the clutches of the god of the dead himself, while growing stronger and unravelling more of the story with each unique escape attempt.
- The Olympians have your back! Meet Zeus, Athena, Poseidon, and many more, and choose from their dozens of powerful Boons that enhance your abilities. There are thousands of viable character builds to discover as you go.
- A fully-voiced cast of colourful, larger-than-life characters is waiting to meet you! Grow your relationships with them, and experience thousands of unique story events as you learn about what's really at stake for this big, dysfunctional family.
- New surprises await each time you delve into the ever-shifting Underworld, whose guardian bosses will remember you. Use the powerful Mirror of Night to grow permanently stronger and give yourself a leg up the next time you run away from home.
- Permanent upgrades mean you don't have to be a god yourself to experience the exciting combat and gripping story. Though, if you happen to be one, crank up the challenge and get ready for some white-knuckle action that will put your well-practiced skills to the test.
Run length and multiplayer options
The survive-until-dawn structure makes Vampire Survivors well suited to short sessions. It supports single-player, online co-op and local co-op, giving it a multiplayer advantage over the single-player-focused Hades. The co-op option is useful if you want the social side of Angelfall’s announced online/LAN support, although the two games do not present their combat in the same way.

What you give up compared with Angelfall
- You do not get the advertised Archdemon role, human-and-holy-warrior targets or reverse-horror framing.
- The pixel-art, auto-attack format is much less elaborate than a 3D isometric action game with skills, rerolls and Hellforge rune changes.
- The emphasis is on survival, positioning and upgrade selection rather than a character-driven campaign.
Vampire Survivors released on 20 October 2022. Steam showed 98% positive English reviews from 128,308 reviews at the time of the 2026 listing snapshot. Its Steam tags include Dark Fantasy, Bullet Hell, Action Roguelike and RPG.
Diablo IV: the best full-scale dark-fantasy action RPG
Diablo IV is the right choice when “like Angelfall” means demons, a dark setting, loot and long-term character building rather than a strict roguelike run loop. It is built as a larger campaign-driven action RPG with class customization, gear progression and seasonal content.
Why its world and loot appeal
Steam lists demons, dark fantasy, isometric action RPG combat, loot and character customization among its defining features. That combination gives you a sustained pursuit of stronger equipment and a character that develops over a much longer horizon than a single run. If you want to keep refining a build between play sessions instead of restarting a new attempt after defeat, Diablo IV supplies that persistence.
The setting is also the closest of these three recommendations to Angelfall’s demonic premise. You are not an Archdemon harvesting Souls, but the game’s monsters, infernal atmosphere and isometric presentation make the thematic transition easier than in a mythological escape story or a minimalist pixel-art survival game.

Rank #4
- Battle beyond the Underworld to vanquish the Titan of Time as the Princess of the Dead in this bewitching sequel to the original rogue-like dungeon crawler. Hades II lets players explore a bigger, deeper mythic world with the full might of Olympus at their call in a story that reacts to their every setback and accomplishment.
Where its progression differs
Diablo IV is a persistent, service-style ARPG rather than a compact run-based roguelike. Its campaign, equipment chase and seasonal content create a different cadence from Angelfall’s proposed Corruption choices, rerolls and Hellforge modifications. A failed fight does not normally send you back to a clean run with a newly randomized build; the emphasis is on improving the same character and equipment path.
Co-op and commitment
Steam lists both single-player and online co-op. That makes Diablo IV the strongest pick here for players who want a substantial shared dark-fantasy campaign rather than short cooperative survival sessions. The trade-off is a larger time commitment and a progression system that expects you to keep investing in one character over time.
Diablo IV released on 17 October 2023. Steam showed 73% positive English reviews from 22,253 reviews at the time of the 2026 listing snapshot.

Run-based progression versus persistent progression
Hades is the strongest match for a repeatable run structure with permanent rewards. Vampire Survivors compresses that idea into survival runs built around escalating enemy density and upgrade choices. Diablo IV moves in the opposite direction: your campaign character, classes and equipment form a persistent progression path. Angelfall is advertised around runs, Souls and a branching Corruption tree, so the first two are closer structurally while Diablo IV is closer in scale and setting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Horde density and combat pace
For the largest enemy crowds and the fastest route to a screen-filling power curve, choose Vampire Survivors. For direct hack-and-slash control with a story attached to each attempt, choose Hades. For a broader action-RPG campaign in which combat supports loot and class development, choose Diablo IV. Angelfall’s advertised identity sits between those ideas: hordes and bosses in a run-based format, with skills and synergies that imply more active control than auto-attacks.

Build customization
Angelfall advertises several layers of customization: the Corruption passive tree, skills and abilities, rerolls, and runes changed at the Hellforge. Hades is the closest analogue for experimenting with combinations during repeated attempts. Vampire Survivors makes upgrade selection and scaling the central puzzle, but with a simpler control model. Diablo IV offers the most persistent character and gear customization, although its choices are made in a long-term ARPG framework rather than reset-and-rebuild runs.
Narrative and character focus
Pick Hades if story is a deciding factor. Its Underworld escape premise is supported by a fully voiced cast and continuing story events. Vampire Survivors is primarily about survival, enemy waves and build snowballing. Diablo IV provides a larger dark-fantasy campaign, but its appeal here is world, demons and progression rather than the intimate character focus that makes Hades distinctive.
Solo and co-op support
Hades is presented as a single-player-focused game. Vampire Survivors supports single-player, online co-op and local co-op, making it the easiest low-commitment option for playing with another person. Diablo IV supports single-player and online co-op within its larger campaign and seasonal structure. Angelfall’s Steam description announces single-player plus online and LAN co-op, but the game is not yet listed as released.
Camera and presentation
Angelfall is advertised as a 3D isometric action game. Diablo IV is also identified on Steam as an isometric action RPG, so it is the closest visual and camera reference among the available games. Vampire Survivors deliberately uses pixel art and auto-attacks. Hades delivers fast hack-and-slash action, but its key similarity is the run structure and story rather than a matching reverse-horror presentation.
Choose by the question you are really asking
- “What should I play while I wait for Angelfall?” Start with Hades if you want runs, permanent upgrades and a story. Move to Vampire Survivors if you want shorter sessions and much larger enemy crowds.
- “Which dark-fantasy roguelike has the best combat?” Choose Hades for the most developed hack-and-slash and character-driven progression among these options. Choose Vampire Survivors if “best” means the most efficient horde-clearing loop with minimal controls.
- “Is there a game where I play the villain and fight hordes?” Angelfall is unusual because its announced premise makes the player the Archdemon. Until it releases, Vampire Survivors is the closest recommendation for the horde-destruction sensation, while Diablo IV is the stronger choice for demons, dark fantasy and a larger RPG framework.
- “I want co-op.” Pick Vampire Survivors for online or local co-op and short survival runs, or Diablo IV for online co-op in a full-scale campaign. Hades is aimed at solo play.
- “I want a build I can keep developing for a long time.” Choose Diablo IV for persistent class, loot and seasonal progression. Choose Hades or Vampire Survivors when you would rather reset into a new run and solve a fresh combination puzzle.
Bottom line
Hades is the best overall game like Angelfall because it combines repeatable action runs, permanent growth, build experimentation and a story that keeps moving after each attempt. Vampire Survivors is the specialist pick for hordes, quick sessions and co-op, while Diablo IV is the specialist pick for a persistent dark-fantasy loot RPG. None reproduces the announced Archdemon perspective, Corruption tree and Hellforge system, but together they cover the three reasons most players are looking for Angelfall now: run-based progression, overwhelming enemies and demonic action-RPG atmosphere.
