The best games like Bluey’s Quest for The Gold Pen are not defined by a cartoon license alone. Match its story-led exploration, gentle puzzle solving, collectible hunting, easy-to-learn controls, family-appropriate presentation and clearly stated play mode. Nintendo’s game is a useful benchmark, but a responsible recommendation also requires checking each alternative’s regional age guidance, multiplayer support, platform edition and current price before buying.
What makes Bluey’s Quest for The Gold Pen the comparison point?
Nintendo describes Bluey’s Quest for The Gold Pen as a story-led adventure built around exploration, clues, playful puzzles, hidden treasures and animated story moments. Its worlds are hand-drawn, and Nintendo says the game includes nine worlds to explore. The controls are intended to be easy to learn, making the game suitable for watching together, taking turns and letting a child play independently with an adult nearby.

The original story was written by Bluey creator Joe Brumm. The official announcement names BBC Studios, Halfbrick Studios and PM Studios among the partners involved: Bluey’s announcement. That creative connection matters to families who want an adventure that feels like an authored episode rather than an open-ended action game.
The core play loop
- Explore: Move through illustrated environments and look for the next clue or objective.
- Solve: Complete light, playful puzzles rather than combat-focused challenges.
- Discover: Search for hidden treasures and other collectibles.
- Watch and share: Follow animated story moments that can be enjoyed by children who are not holding the controller.
This combination is the standard to use when judging another family game. A title that merely features a familiar character but replaces exploration with difficult combat, timed challenges or competitive matches is not necessarily a close substitute.

What the official listing says about play
Nintendo’s US listing reports one player on a single system. Its wording says easy-to-learn controls make the adventure fun to watch, share and take turns playing: Nintendo’s product listing. That is a family-friendly way to use the game, but it is not local multiplayer. Do not assume that two children can control characters simultaneously unless a different game’s store page explicitly lists local or online multiplayer.
Release, platforms and editions
Nintendo’s US store lists a May 28, 2026 release date and identifies the Switch listing as a digital edition. The listing supports TV, tabletop and handheld modes, while warning that the experience may differ on Switch Lite and that additional accessories may be required in some situations.
The official Bluey play page says the game is available on the App Store and Android, PC and console: Bluey’s official game page. The ESRB entry names Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, and Xbox Series: ESRB’s listing. These references describe platform families, not a guarantee that every edition is sold in every country. Check the store attached to your exact hardware before purchase.

What should “like” mean for a kids-and-family game?
Use several matching criteria rather than a single similarity such as “has cartoon characters.” The following five axes separate a genuinely comparable adventure from a game that only looks similar in a trailer.

1. Age guidance and content
Read the rating for the edition sold in your country, then open the content descriptors. A family label does not tell you whether the game contains frightening scenes, slapstick violence, coarse language, gambling-like mechanics or online interaction. Ratings can differ between regions and platforms, so record the exact store and edition. For a younger child, also check whether instructions can be read aloud, whether failure is forgiving and whether the game allows progress without precision timing.
2. Solo, shared and online play
Decide whether the household needs one-player play, same-screen cooperation, competitive matches, online cooperation or a game that can simply be watched and played in turns. Look for an explicit player count and mode label. “Multiplayer” can mean online-only, while “co-op” can require two controllers, a subscription or separate devices. If siblings will share a console, confirm how the game handles save files and whether both players need full control rather than one child acting as a helper.
3. Story, exploration, puzzles and action
Map the intended balance. A close match to the anchor game should give exploration and narrative a meaningful role, include puzzles that are playful rather than punishing, and make discovery worthwhile. Action can be present, but families should know whether it is optional, mild or the central skill test. Check gameplay descriptions and controls rather than relying on a box image or character name.

Confirm the hardware model, operating system, storage requirement, controller support and edition. A game listed for “Switch” may have different features on Switch Lite; a PC listing may require a newer operating system or graphics hardware; a console listing may apply only to a current generation. If a child plays on a tablet, verify the operating-system version and whether the purchase transfers between devices. Platform availability can change after launch.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
5. Current cost and purchase format
Check the live price in the store where the child will play. Record whether the price is a one-time purchase, whether a subscription is required for online functions, and whether downloadable content, cosmetic items or a physical copy cost extra. Do not infer a cartridge from an online marketplace search. The Nintendo listing for the anchor game is explicitly digital, and retail inventory can change.
A step-by-step method for choosing a comparable game
- Write the family’s priority. Choose the main reason you want an alternative: a gentle solo adventure, a game two siblings can play together, a travel-friendly mobile title, or a longer story with more exploration.
- Open the official store page. Use the store for the child’s actual device, not a generic search result. Note the platform, edition, release date and current price shown there.
- Capture the age information. Record the rating and every content descriptor. If the platform uses a different regional system, read that system’s explanation rather than converting it yourself.
- Verify the player mode. Find the player count and the words describing local, online or single-player modes. If the page does not state the mode, treat it as unconfirmed and look for a manual or publisher page.
- Describe the moment-to-moment play. In one sentence, state what the child actually does: explore, investigate clues, solve environmental puzzles, collect objects, battle enemies, race or build. Compare that sentence with the family’s priority.
- Check practical access. Confirm controller requirements, storage, internet requirements, account restrictions, parental controls and whether the game works on the household’s exact model.
- Check the purchase terms again at checkout. Prices, discounts, tax, bundles and physical availability are volatile. Make sure the selected edition is the one you evaluated.
A decision matrix for parents and caregivers
Use this worksheet when several candidates appear promising. It prevents a recognizable character or attractive trailer from overshadowing a deal-breaking limitation.
| Family need | Evidence to find | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| A child wants a story | Publisher description of a campaign, chapters, quests or narrated scenes. | Only a character skin or theme is mentioned; the actual mode is an endless score challenge. |
| Exploration without pressure | Free movement, searchable areas, forgiving checkpoints and optional discoveries. | Strict timers, limited lives or repeated precision jumps are central. |
| Two children sharing | Explicit local player count and controller instructions. | The page says “multiplayer” but specifies online play only. |
| Independent play | Simple controls, adjustable difficulty, clear objectives and readable menus. | Progress depends on an adult solving every puzzle or reading every instruction. |
| Travel or handheld use | Confirmed handheld support, offline access and manageable storage. | Persistent internet, a separate account or accessories are required. |
| Predictable spending | One-time price and a clear list of included content. | Unclear currency, recurring charges or important content sold separately. |
Platform-specific checks for families
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
For the anchor game, Nintendo identifies TV, tabletop and handheld modes. If the child uses Switch Lite, read the compatibility notice and check whether the intended control method needs an additional controller or accessory. The listing reports one player on a single system, so plan for turn-taking rather than simultaneous play. Verify the selected Switch or Switch 2 edition in the store before downloading.

The official Bluey page identifies App Store and Android availability, but a platform family is not the same as universal device support. Check the operating-system requirement, screen controls, storage, in-app-purchase terms and whether progress synchronizes across a family’s devices. A game that works well with touch controls may feel very different from a controller-based console adventure.

Windows PC
Use the exact store page for the PC edition and compare its operating-system, processor, memory, graphics and storage requirements with the child’s computer. Also verify controller support, account requirements and whether the game can be played offline. “PC” does not guarantee that a low-powered school laptop will run a title comfortably.
PlayStation and Xbox
The ESRB entry names PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series among the anchor game’s platforms. Console storefronts can carry different editions, bundles and regional prices. Check the player count on the page for your console, and do not assume that an older-generation edition has feature parity with a newer one. The Xbox store categorizes the anchor title as “Family & kids” and “Action & adventure”: Xbox’s listing. That categorization is useful context, not a substitute for reading the rating and mode details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing for common household situations
One child playing while an adult helps
Prioritize clear objectives, forgiving retries and controls that can be explained without taking over. The anchor game’s easy-to-learn control emphasis and watch-and-take-turns wording fit this arrangement. For another title, look for a pause function, readable menus and a save system that does not erase progress after a failed attempt.
Siblings taking turns
Choose games with short activity loops, visible collectibles and frequent natural stopping points. A one-player game can work well when the handoff is clear, but establish whose save file is used and how progress is shared. Do not describe turn-taking as co-op; the distinction matters when a family expects both children to act at once.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Two players on the same screen
Require an explicit local multiplayer statement, a player count and controller information. Check whether both players can participate through the whole campaign or only in a separate mini-game mode. If a second controller or subscription is required, include that cost in the decision.
Mixed ages watching together
Story presentation, animation and a low penalty for failure can make a game enjoyable for a wider age range. Check the content descriptors for the youngest viewer, not only the child holding the controller. A game can be mechanically simple while still containing scenes that some families would rather avoid.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming a license guarantees a similar game: Read the mechanics. A familiar television property can appear in a racing, fighting, puzzle or management game with a completely different audience.
- Confusing one-player play with family play: Watching and taking turns are valuable, but they are not simultaneous multiplayer. Confirm the player count.
- Using a rating from another region: Open the rating attached to the edition you will purchase and read its descriptors.
- Assuming every platform has the same content: Compare the exact console, PC or mobile edition, including control and save features.
- Trusting an old price: Recheck the store at checkout. Promotions, bundles, taxes and currency conversion change.
- Expecting a physical copy: A digital listing does not prove that a cartridge or disc exists. Confirm format and retailer stock separately.
- Ignoring accessories: Read hardware notices, especially for handheld-only systems and games designed around multiple controllers.
What can be stated confidently—and what still needs checking
Official pages provide a solid description of Bluey’s Quest for The Gold Pen: a Joe Brumm-written story, nine hand-drawn worlds, exploration, clues, playful puzzles, hidden treasures, animated moments, easy-to-learn controls and one-player play on a single system. They also identify mobile, PC and console platform families, with the ESRB entry naming Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, and Xbox Series.
Those sources do not establish a current, apples-to-apples set of alternative games with verified ratings, player modes, editions and prices. Rather than invent a ranked “best” list, use the criteria and worksheet above, then verify each candidate on its current official store page. This approach is slower than choosing by brand recognition, but it protects families from buying a game that is unsuitable for the child, incompatible with the hardware or missing the play mode they expected.
Parent’s pre-purchase checklist
- Does the game’s main activity match the child’s interest: story, exploration, puzzles, collecting or action?
- Is the regional rating appropriate, and have you read every content descriptor?
- Is the exact player mode suitable: solo, turn-taking, local co-op or online?
- Does the edition run on the household’s specific console, computer, phone or tablet?
- Are controllers, subscriptions, internet access or other accessories required?
- Is the current price clear, and is all expected content included?
- Is the purchase digital, physical or both, and does that match your preference?
- Have you checked the store page recently enough to catch a platform, price or availability change?
For families seeking the same gentle, story-first feeling, start with the anchor game’s defining traits rather than with a title list: explore, investigate, solve light puzzles, discover hidden objects and share the story. Then require every alternative to prove its age guidance, play mode, platform compatibility and current purchase terms. That is the most reliable way to find a genuinely suitable game for kids and families.
