Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop is the closest game you can play now to DarkSwarm. It combines a top-down view, twin-stick-style aiming, alien enemies, tactical class roles and cooperative missions, and it is free. Its eight-player limit even exceeds DarkSwarm’s announced four-player squad size. Choose Risk of Rain 2 instead if your priority is extreme movement speed, huge enemy waves and repeatable build-focused runs; its third-person camera and roguelike structure make it a looser match.
DarkSwarm itself is still unreleased. Steam lists it as an upcoming Bitfire Games title published by Ghost Ship Publishing, with no release date announced. The game is described as a tactical co-op shooter for one to four players, built around procedural deployments, four operator roles, alien swarms, resource and data recovery, and extraction. The recommendations below separate the features that are genuinely similar from those that only satisfy the same appetite for frantic cooperative shooting.

The two best alternatives at a glance
| Game | Camera and combat | Co-op size | Mission or run structure | What matches DarkSwarm | Main difference | Access |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DarkSwarm | Top-down tactical shooting with twin-stick-style aiming | One to four players | Procedurally generated deployments with recovery and extraction objectives | Four roles, adaptive alien enemies, squad tactics and extraction pressure | Not released; date still to be announced | Upcoming Steam release |
| Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop | Top-down tactical shooter focused on alien swarms | Up to eight players | Campaign, challenge and community missions | Closest combination of top-down aiming, aliens, classes, hacking and cooperative tactics | Older, volunteer-maintained and not centered on DarkSwarm’s extraction-first presentation | Free on Steam; released 20 April 2017 |
| Risk of Rain 2 | Fast third-person shooting and movement | Solo or with up to three friends | Randomized stages, enemies and items; runs can end at a final boss or continue indefinitely | Frantic combat, escalating hordes, repeatable runs and extensive build experimentation | Third-person camera, survivor/item builds and roguelike progression replace fixed operator classes and extraction contracts | Paid PC game with optional downloadable content; verify current price and availability |
This table is a practical sorting tool rather than a claim that the games play identically. DarkSwarm and Alien Swarm share the most important structural traits. Risk of Rain 2 is the better substitute for tempo and replayability when a top-down perspective is negotiable.
What DarkSwarm is promising
DarkSwarm is presented as a tactical science-fiction horror shooter for a squad entering alien-overrun colonies. Steam describes a one-to-four-player game with solo play, online co-op, procedurally generated levels, four classes, extraction objectives and Xbox-controller support. The official site names the roles as Assault, Engineer, Support and Infiltrator.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The core loop
A typical deployment is framed around entering a hostile colony, fighting through dense and adaptive alien attacks, recovering data and resources, and reaching extraction. That sequence matters because it creates two simultaneous decisions: how far the team can push for another objective, and when it should leave with what it has collected. Procedural levels are intended to keep the route and pressure from becoming a memorized campaign.
The four roles
- Assault: the direct-combat role named by the official site.
- Engineer: the technical role in the four-person roster.
- Support: the team-enabling role.
- Infiltrator: the stealth- or access-oriented role named in the official description.
The available descriptions establish the role names, but they do not yet provide a final weapon list, ability numbers, progression system or balance details. Treat any detailed class builds circulating elsewhere as provisional until the developer publishes them.
Why the camera matters
Top-down twin-stick shooting keeps the aiming direction independent from movement. You can strafe, retreat and maintain fire toward a swarm rather than turning the character through every attack. That perspective also makes enemy density, escape routes and squad spacing easier to read. For a player specifically asking for “games like DarkSwarm,” this is a more important similarity than a generic science-fiction setting.

1. Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop is the closest structural replacement
Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop is the strongest immediate answer for someone who wants DarkSwarm’s combination of top-down alien combat, class-based teamwork and tactical objectives without waiting for an unreleased game. Its Steam listing identifies it as free and gives a release date of 20 April 2017. The listed tags include Twin Stick Shooter, PvE, Co-op, Top-Down Shooter, Class-Based, Aliens, Hacking and Tactical.
Where the match is strongest
- Perspective: it uses a top-down presentation suited to independent movement and aiming, rather than asking you to accept a third-person substitute.
- Enemy theme: aliens are the central threat, not a cosmetic setting applied to a different genre.
- Team play: the tactical co-op format supports up to eight players, so a small group can play together without filling every slot.
- Roles and equipment: its class-based structure gives each player a reason to coordinate weapons, positioning and objectives.
- Mission variety: campaign missions, challenge modes, extra campaigns and Workshop content provide more than one fixed route through the game.
- Solo fallback: improved single-player bots make it possible to play when a full group is unavailable.
What you can do in it
The game combines firefights with tactical tasks such as hacking. That is useful for DarkSwarm fans because the desired experience is not simply “shoot until the screen is empty”; it is a cooperative push through a hostile facility where one player may need to perform an objective while others control the swarm. Reactive Drop also includes additional weapons, player-versus-player modes and community-created content through Workshop support.

The important differences
Reactive Drop is an older title maintained by volunteers, and its presentation is not built around DarkSwarm’s specific recover-and-extract contract. The eight-player ceiling changes squad communication and threat distribution compared with a four-operator team. Its campaign, challenge and Workshop structure also means that replayability comes from missions and community content rather than from DarkSwarm’s announced procedural deployments alone.
Those differences do not undermine the recommendation; they define the trade-off. If your non-negotiables are a top-down view, alien swarms, tactical roles and a free entry point, Reactive Drop is the best fit. If the particular tension of carrying resources to an extraction point is the feature you care about most, you will be using it as a stopgap rather than a one-for-one replacement.
Who should start here
- Players who want to spend nothing before trying the format.
- Groups larger than four people who need an eight-player cooperative option.
- Players who enjoy mission objectives, hacking and tactical coordination as much as shooting.
- Solo players who need bots and a broad selection of established missions.
- Anyone who wants Workshop campaigns and challenge content after completing the main missions.
2. Risk of Rain 2 is the speed-and-build alternative
Risk of Rain 2 is not a camera match: it is played from a third-person perspective. It belongs on this list because it strongly answers the other half of the request—fast movement, escalating enemy hordes and runs that feel different each time. Steam describes randomized stages, enemies and items, more than 110 items, eleven survivors, solo play and online co-op with up to three friends.
Why it feels fast
Power and danger both scale during a run. Enemies become more threatening as the session continues, while item combinations let a survivor’s attack pattern and defensive options develop in unexpected directions. That creates a pressure curve similar to what a DarkSwarm player may want from an increasingly dangerous deployment, even though the camera and objective design are different.
How its runs differ from an extraction mission
A Risk of Rain 2 run moves through randomized stages and can end at a final boss or continue indefinitely. The game’s central question is how long you can keep scaling before the threat overtakes your build. DarkSwarm’s announced loop instead asks whether your squad can complete recovery objectives and reach extraction. One is an open-ended endurance run; the other is a contract with a defined escape condition.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Build variety instead of fixed operators
Risk of Rain 2 offers eleven survivors and a large item pool rather than DarkSwarm’s four named operator roles. Your decisions are about survivor selection and item combinations, and the resulting build can change substantially from one run to the next. This is the better choice if experimentation and emergent synergies matter more to you than assigning Assault, Engineer, Support or Infiltrator responsibilities.

What you give up
- You do not get a top-down twin-stick viewpoint.
- You do not get DarkSwarm’s four-role squad structure.
- You do not get a dedicated extraction objective as the defining end point of each mission.
- The cooperative limit is solo or up to three friends, rather than Reactive Drop’s eight-player tactical teams.
Choose Risk of Rain 2 when the phrase “fast-paced” is doing more work than “twin-stick.” Choose Reactive Drop when camera, aliens and class coordination are the deciding criteria.
Which game fits your priority?
If you need the closest camera and enemy match
Start with Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop. It is the only immediately available recommendation here that combines a top-down shooter, alien-focused PvE, class-based co-op and tactical tags. The free access model removes the cost barrier, and Workshop support gives the game a larger mission pool than its original campaign alone.
If you need a free alternative
Reactive Drop is the clear choice because its Steam listing identifies it as free. DarkSwarm’s eventual price is not stated, and Risk of Rain 2 is described as a paid PC game with optional downloadable content. Check the current store page in your region before purchasing, since prices and platform availability can change.
If you play with more than four people
Reactive Drop supports up to eight players in tactical co-op, while DarkSwarm is described as a one-to-four-player game and Risk of Rain 2 supports solo play or up to three friends. A five-person group cannot reproduce DarkSwarm’s announced squad size exactly, but it can remain together in Reactive Drop.

If your group wants repeatable builds
Risk of Rain 2 is the better fit for randomized items, survivor combinations and runs that can continue indefinitely. DarkSwarm’s procedural deployments suggest replayable maps and objectives, but the available description does not establish a comparable item count or long-term build system. Reactive Drop’s replay value comes from campaigns, challenge modes and Workshop material rather than from a documented survivor-and-item loop.
If your group wants objective pressure
DarkSwarm’s defining objective is to recover data and resources and reach extraction. Reactive Drop is closer than Risk of Rain 2 because its tactical missions include tasks such as hacking, although its overall structure is campaign and challenge based. Risk of Rain 2 is about surviving and scaling through stages, not carrying a recovered payload to an extraction point.
How the co-op formats change the experience
| Concern | DarkSwarm | Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop | Risk of Rain 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squad size | One to four players | Up to eight players | Solo or up to three friends |
| Solo support | Yes, according to the Steam description | Improved single-player bots are listed | Solo play is supported |
| Coordination style | Four named roles and extraction decisions | Class-based tactics, hacking and mission objectives | Survivor and item combinations during a scaling run |
| Replay source | Procedurally generated levels and deployments | Campaigns, challenge modes and Workshop content | Randomized stages, enemies and items; runs may continue indefinitely |
Player count is not just a technical limit. A four-person squad can assign one player to each DarkSwarm role and keep communications focused. Reactive Drop’s eight-player option supports larger communities but can spread responsibility across more people. Risk of Rain 2’s four-player maximum keeps the group compact while giving every survivor room to pursue an individual build.

DarkSwarm’s Steam listing explicitly supports Xbox-compatible controllers. That means a controller is an optional way to use two-stick movement and aiming; it is not stated as a requirement. Keyboard-and-mouse and controller preferences should be checked against the final release information because the game is still unreleased.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy a controller can help
With two analog sticks, one controls movement while the other controls firing direction. This layout is useful when aliens surround the squad, because you can retreat without turning away from the threat. It also makes small directional corrections during a dense swarm easier for many players than combining keyboard movement with mouse aiming.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
What to verify before buying an accessory
- Confirm that the controller is recognized by your operating system and the game platform.
- Check whether the model is sold with the cable, wireless adapter or batteries you need.
- Verify current PC compatibility and regional availability at the time of purchase.
- Remember that a controller improves input comfort; it does not make an unreleased game playable before launch.
For Reactive Drop, the same general twin-stick principle applies, but its exact control options and mappings should be checked in the current Steam configuration. Risk of Rain 2 can also be played with a controller, although its third-person camera means the aiming feel is not the same as a top-down shooter.
Release status, availability and claims to treat cautiously
DarkSwarm has no announced release date on its Steam listing. It is not accurate to describe it as delayed, cancelled or available for purchase on the basis of the information currently established; the precise status is simply upcoming with a date to be announced. Playtest access, final platform support, pricing and review totals are also not established in the available descriptions and may change.
Reactive Drop’s free listing and 20 April 2017 release date are specific to the Steam version described here. Volunteer maintenance and Workshop content explain why its long-term experience can depend on community activity. Risk of Rain 2 is identified as a paid PC title with optional downloadable content, but a current price, regional storefront coverage and the contents of each add-on should be verified before purchase.

A practical decision path
- Decide whether top-down aiming is mandatory. If yes, choose Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop while waiting for DarkSwarm. If no, continue to the next step.
- Decide whether you want mission objectives or open-ended runs. Choose Reactive Drop for campaign and challenge missions; choose Risk of Rain 2 for randomized stages and runs that can continue indefinitely.
- Count your players. A group of five to eight points to Reactive Drop. A group of one to four can fit either alternative, with Risk of Rain 2 capped at solo or three friends.
- Choose your progression style. Pick Reactive Drop for class-based teamwork and community missions; pick Risk of Rain 2 for survivor and item combinations.
- Check access and price in your region. Reactive Drop is listed as free, Risk of Rain 2 is a paid PC game, and DarkSwarm has not yet released.
Bottom line
For the closest playable DarkSwarm substitute, install Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop: it is free, top-down, alien-focused, class-based and tactical, with co-op for up to eight players. Select Risk of Rain 2 when your priority is speed, escalating hordes and build experimentation and you are willing to trade the top-down camera and extraction structure for third-person roguelike runs. Keep DarkSwarm on your watch list if its four-role, procedural, recover-and-extract design is the specific combination you want, because no currently identified alternative reproduces all of those elements at once.
