Best games like Dead Cells for fast 2D roguelike action

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Hades is the best first game to try if you want Dead Cells’ rapid combat, dodge timing, build choices and one-more-run momentum. Choose Hollow Knight instead for handcrafted metroidvania exploration, Rogue Legacy 2 for inheritance and permanent upgrades, or The Rogue Prince of Persia for movement-led traversal. The remaining picks target specific tastes, including character swapping, grim combat, bullet-hell shooting and precision parries.

Dead Cells is a difficult comparison target because it combines several formats at once: fast 2D action, changing run layouts, permanent unlocks, metroidvania-style ability progression and the threat of losing a run on death. The right alternative depends on which of those ingredients matters most to you.

What makes Dead Cells difficult to replace?

Motion Twin describes Dead Cells as a rogue-lite, Castlevania-inspired action-platformer set in a sprawling, ever-changing castle. Its combat is framed as 2D souls-lite action with permadeath always in the background. In practical terms, a run asks you to move quickly, read enemy attacks, choose a build, improvise through a changing route and accept that death sends you back to the start while selected progress remains.

That mixture is more specific than the label roguelike suggests. A game can match Dead Cells in one dimension and feel completely different in another. A top-down game may reproduce the dodge-and-build loop but lose the rhythm of side-scrolling platforming. A handcrafted metroidvania may offer better map discovery but no repeated run reset. A punishing action game may have the weight and timing without procedural layouts or permanent meta-progression.

  • Run builds: weapons, abilities, traits or character choices that create a temporary strategy.
  • Permanent progression: unlocks or improvements that survive a failed attempt.
  • Death-and-retry structure: failure begins another attempt instead of ending the game.

The recommendations below are organized by the part of that formula you want to preserve. No alternative reproduces every element exactly.

Quick recommendations

Game Best for Viewpoint and structure What changes from Dead Cells
Hades Closest overall run-and-build match Top-down action roguelike Replaces side-scrolling platforming with arena movement and a different camera perspective
Hollow Knight Exploration and metroidvania discovery Handcrafted 2D interconnected world Exploration is persistent rather than primarily randomized run-based
Rogue Legacy 2 Classes, traits and inheritance 2D platforming roguelite Generational identity and comedy shape progression
The Rogue Prince of Persia Fast traversal and acrobatic routes Side-scrolling roguelike framework Movement flow and traps are the central attraction
Skul: The Hero Slayer Changing playable movesets 2D action roguelite Build construction revolves around swapping skulls
Have a Nice Death Lighter workplace-satire tone Side-scrolling action roguelite Its office setting and comedy replace Dead Cells’ darker castle mood
Blasphemous Grim atmosphere and weighty combat Exploration-focused 2D action Attacks and pacing are more deliberate than Dead Cells
Enter the Gungeon Ranged bullet-hell runs Top-down room-based roguelite Firearms and projectile dodging replace melee platform combat
Nine Sols Precision parries 2D action-platforming Defensive timing and parry execution are the defining skill

1. Hades: the closest overall structure

Start with Hades if your favorite Dead Cells moments are the combat loop itself: enter a run, combine abilities into a temporary build, dodge through danger, die, spend what you earned and immediately consider trying again. Hades is consistently the safest recommendation because it preserves the rapid decision-making and permanent-upgrade rhythm even though it is viewed from above rather than from the side.

Its combat is built around quick movement, dodge timing and direct attacks. Encounters take place in discrete rooms, so the emphasis is on reading threats and choosing how to shape a run rather than mastering long platforming sequences. Between attempts, permanent upgrades and new content give failure a purpose; a death is a reset, not a complete loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is fundamental: Hades is a top-down action roguelike, not a side-scrolling platformer or metroidvania. You will not get Dead Cells’ vertical jumps, wall movement or ability-gated castle routes. Choose it when combat feel, build variety and the emotional rhythm of one more run matter more than platforming and map backtracking.

2. Hollow Knight: the exploration-first alternative

Hollow Knight is the better choice when what you call the Dead Cells experience is really the pleasure of discovering a connected world. Its map is handcrafted rather than assembled into a fresh route for every attempt. Areas, shortcuts and secrets reward memory and backtracking, making the world itself the long-term progression system.

Combat and platforming remain central, but the pacing is more deliberate. You learn enemy patterns, return to places you could not previously reach and gradually understand how regions connect. The satisfaction comes from mastery and discovery across a persistent journey instead of rebuilding a run after every death.

That makes Hollow Knight a poor substitute if procedural replay and run-based builds are non-negotiable. It is an excellent substitute if you want 2D action with a deep metroidvania map, meaningful exploration and a more authored sense of place.

3. Rogue Legacy 2: inheritance as the build system

Rogue Legacy 2 fits players who enjoy Dead Cells’ permanent progression but want each attempt to feel like another member of a lineage. Runs are organized around classes, traits and inherited differences. A new character can change the way you approach the same broad platforming challenge, so failure becomes part of a generational system rather than only a restart.

  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

Its run-based meta-progression and many class options provide a wide range of starting identities. Traits can modify how a character behaves, while permanent improvements make future attempts more capable. The result is a more explicit relationship between your current run and the next generation.

The tone is also distinct. Rogue Legacy 2 uses comedy and inheritance as part of its identity, whereas Dead Cells presents a darker, more severe world. Pick it when class variety and long-term upgrades are more important than matching Dead Cells’ atmosphere or exact combat cadence.

4. The Rogue Prince of Persia: best for movement and traversal

The Rogue Prince of Persia is aimed at players who measure an action game by how naturally they can move through it. Its design pillars are fast traversal, acrobatic combat and trap-filled environments inside a roguelike structure. Routes are about maintaining momentum, finding a clean line through hazards and using movement as an offensive advantage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the recommendation to make when Dead Cells’ jumps, wall movement and route flow are more memorable to you than its particular weapons. The side-scrolling perspective keeps spatial relationships readable, while traps and traversal challenges make the environment an active opponent.

Its focus means the comparison is not primarily about having the largest collection of build combinations. Choose it for movement expression, rapid navigation and the feeling that every room is asking you to keep moving.

5. Skul: The Hero Slayer: build around changing characters

Skul: The Hero Slayer turns character identity into a run resource. Instead of committing to one moveset, you can swap skulls and build combinations around the abilities each skull provides. That makes experimentation feel immediate: changing the character changes the way attacks, spacing and encounters are approached.

The game retains the 2D action-roguelite framework, including repeated attempts and run-specific decisions, but its hook is the flexibility of the playable form itself. If you enjoy Dead Cells because a new weapon can transform a run, Skul extends that idea to the character’s basic moveset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Skul when variety in moment-to-moment identity is your priority. It is less suitable if you want a persistent metroidvania map or a movement system built around Dead Cells-style platform routes.

6. Have a Nice Death: a lighter side-scrolling roguelite

Have a Nice Death is a useful pick for players who want a fast side-scrolling action roguelite but prefer a comedic workplace setting. Its office-satire premise gives the run loop a lighter tone than Dead Cells’ ruined-castle presentation.

The appeal is the familiar structure: move through changing areas, fight in real time, make choices during a run and return for another attempt after death. The setting changes the emotional texture rather than trying to reproduce Dead Cells’ gothic atmosphere.

Choose it when side-scrolling runs and a playful mood matter more than a grim presentation. If you want the harshest atmosphere or heavier combat, Blasphemous is a closer thematic direction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Blasphemous: grim tone and deliberate punishment

Blasphemous belongs on this list for players who want a darker visual and thematic direction, oppressive environments and combat that feels weightier than Dead Cells. It is frequently grouped with exploration-focused metroidvania games, so discovery and traversal remain important alongside fights.

The defining adjustment is pace. Attacks are more deliberate, and encounters reward patience, spacing and recognition of danger rather than constant high-speed aggression. That can make each successful exchange feel heavier, but it also means the game will not provide the same uninterrupted flow as Dead Cells.

Choose Blasphemous if atmosphere and punishing, measured combat are the reasons you are looking beyond lighter action games. Choose Hades or The Rogue Prince of Persia if you want faster movement and a stronger emphasis on run momentum.

8. Enter the Gungeon: ranged bullet-hell action

Enter the Gungeon preserves the repeatable run structure while changing almost everything about combat perspective. It is a top-down bullet-hell roguelite centered on firearms, room clearing and dodging dense projectile patterns. Your attention shifts from lining up a side-scrolling melee exchange to reading space, managing angles and finding safe paths through incoming shots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the right recommendation when you like the tension of losing a run but prefer ranged attacks and projectile avoidance. The room-based format makes each encounter a compact test of movement and positioning, while the top-down camera offers a broader view of threats.

Do not choose it expecting Dead Cells’ platforming or close-range timing. Choose it when the run loop matters and bullet patterns sound more appealing than melee weapons.

9. Nine Sols: precision parry-focused 2D action

Nine Sols targets players who want a demanding 2D action game where defensive timing is central. Its identity is tied to precise parries and deliberate responses to enemy attacks, making success depend on learning patterns and executing the correct defensive action under pressure.

That focus gives it a different skill profile from Dead Cells’ broader movement-and-build mix. You may still recognize the appeal of fast retries and difficult encounters, but the question in a fight is often whether you can parry correctly rather than whether you can maintain a high-speed offensive route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Nine Sols when mastery of timing and defense is the feature you want to emphasize. If you want more emphasis on randomized builds, Hades or Skul is a better starting point.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

The Lost Crown is the choice for polished platforming and traversal. It is better suited to players who want a crafted action-platforming journey than to those specifically seeking randomized roguelike runs.

How the games differ on the decisions that matter

Priority Best match Why What you give up
Fast combat and flexible builds Hades Rapid dodge-and-strike action with permanent upgrades between attempts Side-scrolling platforming and metroidvania route design
Handcrafted exploration Hollow Knight Interconnected map, discovery and backtracking Procedural run layouts and run-first progression
Inheritance and permanent upgrades Rogue Legacy 2 Classes, traits and generational progression Dead Cells’ darker tone and more unified protagonist identity
Movement and route flow The Rogue Prince of Persia Fast traversal, acrobatics and traps Build breadth is less central than movement expression
Changing playable identity Skul: The Hero Slayer Skull swaps alter the moveset during a run Persistent metroidvania exploration
Grim, weighty action Blasphemous Oppressive atmosphere and deliberate combat Some of Dead Cells’ speed and constant flow
Ranged dodging Enter the Gungeon Firearms, rooms and bullet patterns 2D side-scrolling melee encounters
Parry mastery Nine Sols Precise defensive timing drives combat Dead Cells’ broader build-and-movement emphasis

Randomized runs or handcrafted exploration?

This is the biggest decision before choosing a Dead Cells alternative. Randomized runs make each attempt a problem-solving exercise: you adapt to the route, rewards and tools that appear, then carry selected unlocks into the next attempt. Hades, Rogue Legacy 2, Skul, Have a Nice Death and Enter the Gungeon all appeal to that repeated-run mindset, though they use different viewpoints and combat systems.

Handcrafted exploration creates a different kind of replay value. Hollow Knight and the exploration side of Blasphemous ask you to remember places, understand connections and return with new capabilities. The Lost Crown also fits this authored platforming direction. These games can be challenging and replayable without making procedural generation the center of every attempt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dead Cells sits between those categories because it combines changing routes with metroidvania-style ability unlocks. If you want the exact hybrid, expect a compromise: the alternatives tend to specialize in either the roguelite loop or the handcrafted exploration half.

How death and progression feel across the list

In a roguelite, death is supposed to be productive. The question is what survives. Hades emphasizes permanent upgrades and continuing content. Rogue Legacy 2 makes survival across attempts feel like inheritance. Skul makes experimentation itself valuable because each run can reveal a different skull combination. Enter the Gungeon turns failed attempts into practice for reading projectile patterns.

Exploration-led games handle failure differently. Hollow Knight’s long-term progress is tied more to the world you have learned and the areas you have opened than to rebuilding a fresh character after every defeat. Blasphemous and The Lost Crown likewise emphasize authored journeys rather than a pure run-reset cycle.

Before buying, decide whether you want failure to produce a stronger next attempt, a better understanding of a persistent map, or simply more practice against demanding encounters. That choice narrows the list faster than genre labels do.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Platform and release-state checks

Platform support and release status are not fixed details for every title in this group, especially newer games and games in changing development states. Confirm the current store listing for your platform before purchase. This is particularly important for Hades II, Windblown, Astral Ascent and The Rogue Prince of Persia, whose availability can differ by platform or change over time.

No reliable price, review-count, sales or completion-time statistic establishes one of these games as objectively better value. The strongest recommendation is therefore preference-based: select the game whose viewpoint, progression model and combat priority match the reason you enjoyed Dead Cells.

A practical decision path

  1. Choose your camera: pick side-scrolling games if platforming and spatial route reading are essential; choose top-down games if broader arenas and projectile or dodge-based positioning sound better.
  2. Choose your progression: select a roguelite when you want repeated attempts with run builds and permanent unlocks; select a metroidvania when discovery and backtracking should remain persistent.
  3. Choose your combat emphasis: pick Hades for dodge-and-strike flow, Nine Sols for parries, Enter the Gungeon for ranged bullet patterns, or Blasphemous for slower, heavier exchanges.
  4. Choose your movement priority: The Rogue Prince of Persia is the specialist option when traversal and acrobatics are as important as fighting.
  5. Choose your tone: Have a Nice Death and Rogue Legacy 2 are lighter and more comedic; Blasphemous leans grim and oppressive.
  6. Verify availability: check the current platform listing and release status before committing to a newer title.

Which game should you play first?

Play Hades first if you want the closest overall substitute for Dead Cells’ fast combat, build decisions and permanent progression. Pick Hollow Knight if exploration is the part you cannot compromise on. Choose Rogue Legacy 2 for inheritance and classes, The Rogue Prince of Persia for movement, Skul for changing characters, Blasphemous for grim weight, Enter the Gungeon for ranged bullet hell, or Nine Sols for precise parries. Those distinctions are more useful than asking which title is universally most like Dead Cells, because each one preserves a different part of its unusual design.
