Best Games Like Drova – Forsaken Kin (Gothic, Outward and More)

If you want another game after Drova – Forsaken Kin—sometimes searched as “Drova II: Torn Lands”—start with Gothic 1 and Gothic 2. They are the closest structural matches: you begin as an insignificant outsider, learn skills from trainers, commit to a faction, and move through a chapter-based story in a compact world where quests have consequences.

Choose Outward instead if the part you loved was preparing for dangerous journeys and surviving while underpowered. Pick ELEX or Risen for the same broad faction-and-training lineage in 3D. Dread Delusion and Death Trash are the strongest indie alternatives, while Dark Souls, ELDEN RING and Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen match selected combat or atmosphere traits rather than Drova’s complete structure.

First, what “Drova II: Torn Lands” refers to

The game’s official title is Drova – Forsaken Kin. It launched on October 15, 2024, and its Steam listing currently shows 4,868 English reviews with 93% positive sentiment (listing accessed October 18, 2026). The title “Drova II: Torn Lands” appears to be a search phrasing rather than the name established by the store listing; the recommendations below concern Drova – Forsaken Kin.

Steam describes Drova as a “pixel art Action-RPG inspired by the grim dark classics of the genre and the mystical allure of Celtic mythology.” Its handcrafted open world is divided by a conflict over spirits that govern nature, and the listing says that your choices and actions shape the environment. That combination explains why ordinary open-world recommendations are not enough: the closest games reproduce specific parts of Drova’s design rather than merely sharing a fantasy setting.

What makes a game genuinely similar to Drova?

Use these five traits to decide whether a recommendation fits what you actually enjoyed.

  • Faction commitment: joining a group changes your access, relationships or quest path instead of being a cosmetic choice.
  • Trainer-led growth: knowledge comes from finding characters who teach skills, not only from assigning points in a menu.
  • Zero-to-hero pacing: early vulnerability matters, and competence is earned through exploration, preparation and selective fights.
  • Compact, reactive worlds: a smaller map with layered routes and consequences can feel more personal than a huge checklist map.
  • Demanding action: combat rewards observation and timing, while mistakes carry a real cost.

No game below matches every trait. The useful question is which part you want to preserve: Drova’s structure, its survival pressure, its faction politics, its unusual indie atmosphere, or only its combat and dark-fantasy mood.

Quick recommendations by priority

If you want… Play first Why
Drova’s faction, trainer and chapter structure Gothic 1 or Gothic 2 The closest overall match for earned status, faction lock-in and consequence-heavy quests.
Dangerous expeditions and survival friction Outward Preparation, travel risk and combat punishment make every successful route feel earned.
Drova’s lineage in a 3D world ELEX or Risen Faction politics, training and reactive quests in the Piranha Bytes tradition.
Surreal indie exploration Dread Delusion An 81% Steam-tag similarity match with dark-fantasy and Souls-like overlap.
Grotesque, systems-driven CRPG play Death Trash Also listed at an 81% Steam-tag match, with a harsher and stranger presentation.
Methodical combat and dark atmosphere Dark Souls or ELDEN RING Strong combat and mood overlap, but not Drova’s 2D faction-and-trainer framework.
Action-RPG exploration and character building Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen A selective match for combat, exploration and builds rather than faction structure.

1. Gothic 1 and Gothic 2: the closest overall match

If your search is “Is there a 2D RPG like Gothic?” the answer is effectively Drova itself; if your search is “What should I play after Drova?”, the answer is to play the games that supplied the clearest structural precedent: Gothic 1 and Gothic 2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the progression feels familiar

Both Gothic games center on a weak protagonist who earns status through training, faction commitment and chapter progression. A Steam comparison of Drova specifically points to trainers who teach in exchange for points, two major exclusive factions and a chapter-based story. Those are not surface similarities. They create the same rhythm: meet people who can teach you, decide whom to trust, accept that some doors will close, then return to earlier areas with abilities and authority you did not have before.

Where Gothic is a better match than most alternatives

  • Faction lock-in: choosing a major faction has practical consequences, so replaying with another allegiance changes the route through the game.
  • Trainer-led skill growth: progression is social and geographic; locating the right teacher is part of the adventure.
  • Compact world design: important characters and paths are densely arranged, making repeated visits meaningful rather than wasteful.
  • Consequence-heavy quests: solutions are often tied to reputation, timing and allegiance instead of a single obvious objective marker.

What feels different

Gothic is a 3D classic rather than a modern pixel-art game, and its interface and presentation can feel rougher than Drova’s. The recommendation is about structure and atmosphere, not visual equivalence. If you need a new release with contemporary presentation, Gothic may require patience; if you want the underlying design logic, it remains the benchmark.

2. Outward: choose it for survival pressure

Outward is the right follow-up when the memorable part of Drova was being underpowered, learning the world through failed trips and preparing carefully before leaving safety. Community comparisons place it beside Drova as a Gothic-like RPG with a heavier emphasis on combat and survival systems.

The shared feeling of earning every expedition

Outward treats travel as a problem to solve. You leave with a plan, supplies and a route; an unexpected fight or environmental hazard can force you to retreat. That friction produces a similar emotional payoff to Drova’s difficult exploration: a safe path is not assumed, and knowledge of the world is itself a form of power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where Outward diverges

  • Looser structure: it does not reproduce Drova’s exact faction-led, chapter-based framework.
  • More survival management: preparation and recovery occupy more of your attention than in a conventional action RPG.
  • Combat punishment: taking a fight without the right equipment or plan can end a journey quickly.
  • Co-op availability: Outward can be approached as a co-operative experience, a major option that Drova comparisons do not imply for Drova itself.

Choose Outward when you want the pressure of a dangerous trip. Choose Gothic when you want the closest match for faction progression and trainer-based advancement.

3. ELEX and Risen: the 3D Piranha Bytes lineage

ELEX and Risen are useful bridges for players who want Drova’s politics, training and reactivity translated into a fully 3D world. Steam community recommendations repeatedly group them with Gothic and Drova, and both preserve the broad Piranha Bytes design lineage that makes faction choice matter.

ELEX

ELEX is the choice when you want a larger-feeling 3D setting and a pronounced clash between factions. Its appeal here is not a pixel-art resemblance; it is the tension between allegiance, access and personal growth. Expect a world where your chosen identity affects how people treat you and which opportunities are available.

Risen

Risen is the better pick if you prefer a more concentrated adventure. It carries the training, faction identity and exploratory quest design associated with Gothic while presenting them through a 3D island setting. The result is closer to Drova’s sense of a handcrafted place than a map built around endless interchangeable activities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shared trade-offs

Quality ELEX Risen
Faction identity Strong; a central part of the world’s social and political structure. Strong; commitment shapes progression through the island.
World feel Broader 3D scale and more vertical exploration. More concentrated 3D exploration.
Quest reactivity Important to how groups and characters respond. Important to access, allegiance and progression.
Presentation 3D and more modern than Gothic, but still rough around the edges. Older 3D presentation and interface conventions.
Best for Players who want faction politics at a larger scale. Players who want a tighter Gothic-style adventure.

Neither game reproduces Drova’s 2D presentation. Their value is showing how the same design priorities work when exploration is vertical and the world is rendered in 3D.

4. Dread Delusion: the strongest surreal indie alternative

A Steam-tag similarity index lists Dread Delusion as an 81% match to Drova, with Souls-like and Dark Fantasy among the overlapping tags. Treat that percentage as a discovery signal, not a claim that the games play identically.

Why it belongs on the list

Dread Delusion is built around an unusual indie world and exploration-first curiosity. Its atmosphere and surreal setting can satisfy the same desire that brings players to Drova’s Celtic-inspired dark fantasy: a place that feels authored, strange and worth understanding rather than a generic backdrop for combat.

Important differences

  • Its presentation and world design are distinct from Drova’s pixel-art approach.
  • Its structure is not a direct substitute for Drova’s two-faction, trainer-led progression.
  • Combat complexity and narrative ambiguity are different priorities from Drova’s clearer faction framework.

Pick Dread Delusion when you want discovery, atmosphere and a world that refuses to explain itself immediately. Do not pick it expecting a one-for-one Gothic-style progression loop.

5. Death Trash: a harsher CRPG edge

Death Trash also appears as an 81% Steam-tag match to Drova, with CRPG and Souls-like overlap. It is aimed at players who want a darker, stranger and more systems-driven role-playing experience and who are comfortable with grotesque content and a very different visual and tonal approach.

What carries over

The useful overlap is the feeling that the world is hostile, rules are learned through play and character choices can change how situations unfold. Its CRPG emphasis makes experimentation and build decisions more prominent than in a straightforward action game.

What does not carry over

Death Trash does not recreate Drova’s specific faction-and-trainer structure, and its combat tempo and tone are substantially different. The 81% tag match signals shared themes and genre language, not identical pacing, art direction or quest architecture.

Choose it for systems, experimentation and an intentionally abrasive dark-fantasy edge. Choose Gothic or Risen if faction progression is the non-negotiable feature.

6. Dark Souls, ELDEN RING and Dragon’s Dogma: partial matches

These games appear in the same related-game tag set, but they belong in a second tier because each captures only selected parts of Drova.

Dark Souls

Dark Souls matches the methodical combat and oppressive dark-fantasy atmosphere. Encounters reward learning attack patterns, spacing and timing, which can appeal to players who liked Drova’s demand for attention during fights. It does not provide Drova’s pixel-art presentation, trainer-led advancement or faction-led chapter structure.

ELDEN RING

ELDEN RING is the broadest exploration option here. Its dark fantasy, combat discipline and willingness to let players discover routes without constant hand-holding overlap with Drova’s exploratory appeal. Its scale and build freedom make it a very different experience from a compact, handcrafted world organized around faction progression.

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is the best of the three for action-RPG exploration and character building. Its relevance is mechanical: combat encounters, travel and build choices can satisfy someone seeking a deeper action loop. It is not a substitute for Drova’s two-dimensional faction politics or trainer economy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Game Main overlap with Drova Main mismatch
Dark Souls Methodical combat and dark atmosphere. No Drova-style faction-and-trainer progression.
ELDEN RING Exploration without constant hand-holding; dark fantasy. Much larger scale and different progression structure.
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen Action-RPG combat, exploration and character building. Does not reproduce Drova’s faction framework.

How to choose your next game

  1. Identify the feature you miss most. If it is faction commitment, start with Gothic. If it is preparation and danger on the road, start with Outward. If it is unusual exploration, start with Dread Delusion.
  2. Decide whether 2D presentation matters. Gothic, ELEX and Risen are 3D; Dark Souls, ELDEN RING and Dragon’s Dogma also use 3D. None is a visual replacement for Drova’s pixel art.
  3. Set your tolerance for older interfaces. Gothic and Risen offer the closest lineage but can feel less polished than newer releases. ELEX is broader and newer in presentation, while still retaining rough edges.
  4. Choose your desired combat emphasis. Outward adds survival friction; Dark Souls and ELDEN RING emphasize methodical combat; Dragon’s Dogma emphasizes action-RPG character building; Death Trash leans toward systems and CRPG experimentation.
  5. Expect different kinds of freedom. Drova’s freedom comes from factions, choices and a reactive handcrafted world. ELDEN RING offers scale, Outward offers expedition planning, and Gothic offers social progression through teachers and allegiances.

Why Drova’s closest comparisons are structural, not visual

Drova’s identity comes from combining a pixel-art surface with design ideas associated with grim dark RPG classics. The Steam listing emphasizes a handcrafted open world, choices that shape the environment, a society divided over control of nature-governing spirits and a faction conflict. That explains why Gothic remains the strongest recommendation even though it is a 3D classic, while a visually or mechanically similar action game may rank lower.

The store page displays a Eurogamer quote saying, “Gradually discovering how this realm works had much of the magic of the old days,” and a Try Hard quote describing a game in which players “will struggle to survive, thrive, and find more to live for” while making impactful decisions. Those descriptions point to the same priorities as the recommendations above: discovery, earned competence and decisions that matter beyond a single fight.

Final ranking

  1. Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 — closest match for faction lock-in, trainers, zero-to-hero pacing, compact world design and consequence-heavy quests.
  2. Outward — best for survival pressure, preparation and dangerous expeditions; a looser structural match.
  3. Risen — the tightest 3D alternative for faction identity and concentrated exploration.
  4. ELEX — the choice for a broader 3D world with strong faction politics and reactive progression.
  5. Dread Delusion — an 81% Steam-tag match for surreal dark-fantasy exploration, not a direct structural clone.
  6. Death Trash — an 81% Steam-tag match for a harsher CRPG experience with grotesque, systems-driven play.
  7. Dark Souls, ELDEN RING and Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen — worthwhile when combat, atmosphere or character building matters more than Drova’s complete formula.
