Valheim is the closest overall alternative to Enshrouded. It combines shared exploration, resource gathering, crafting, construction, biomes and boss progression in a survival sandbox built for groups. The trade-off is fundamental: Valheim uses a procedurally generated Viking world and supports 1–10 players, while Enshrouded offers a handcrafted fantasy world and co-op for up to 16.
Your best choice depends on what your group wants to preserve: freeform building, combat progression, story, horror, creatures, castle management or a more overtly fantastical setting. The guide below matches each priority to the strongest alternative.

What makes Enshrouded distinctive
Keen Games describes Enshrouded as “a cooperative survival crafting action RPG.” Its loop combines exploration, gathering, combat, character development and construction instead of treating building as a separate creative mode. You can play solo and offline or invite an online group of up to 16 players.
The world is handcrafted and fully terraformable. Voxel-based construction lets you shape terrain as well as place structures, while hunting, farming, fishing and scavenging feed the survival and crafting systems. Combat is skill-based, with equipment choices and a large skill tree defining how a character develops. The setting is dark fantasy: the Shroud creates a dangerous, corrupted landscape that gives exploration and boss encounters a strong sense of place.
On Steam, the Windows listing specifies 16 GB of RAM, 60 GB of available storage and a broadband connection. Steam showed 87% positive English-language reviews from 50,558 reviews on October 18, 2026; that percentage is a live store metric and can change as new reviews arrive.
The alternatives below are not benchmark rankings. There is no authoritative cross-game performance or retention study that fairly scores every title. They are feature-fit recommendations based on the games’ described worlds, multiplayer structures and progression loops.
Quick picks for different kinds of groups
| Game | Best fit | What carries over from Enshrouded | Important compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valheim | Closest all-round replacement | Co-op survival, crafting, construction, exploration, biomes and bosses | Procedural Viking world; 1–10 players rather than a handcrafted 16-player fantasy world |
| Palworld | Groups that want creatures and automation | Co-op survival-crafting sandbox, exploration and base work | Creature collection and production automation are more central than action-RPG building |
| V Rising | Combat-focused groups | Online or LAN co-op, character progression and a base that belongs to the group | A tightly focused vampire combat and castle-management loop |
| Conan Exiles | Players who prioritize construction depth | Open-world survival, crafting, building and shared saves | Harsher survival identity; PC and console editions differ |
| Grounded | Approachable, story-led co-op | Authored exploration, crafting, building and cooperative objectives | A playful backyard setting rather than dark-fantasy scale |
| Sons of the Forest | Survival-horror fans | Exploration, construction and cooperative survival | Fear, scarcity and danger dominate over conventional RPG progression |
| Nightingale | Players seeking realm-based fantasy | Fantasy exploration, survival crafting and shared bases | Realm travel creates a more segmented structure than Enshrouded’s continuous map |
How to choose an Enshrouded alternative
Before starting a new world, agree on the parts of Enshrouded your group actually wants to keep. “Co-op survival” can mean a relaxed building game, a combat RPG, a horror experience or a demanding resource-management simulation. These questions narrow the choice quickly.
How many people will play?
Enshrouded supports up to 16 players. Valheim supports 1–10 players. Current player caps for Palworld, V Rising, Conan Exiles, Grounded, Sons of the Forest or Nightingale are not specified, so check the current platform listing or server documentation for your edition before buying. A game that is excellent for two players may not support a larger regular group without a different server or mode.
Do you want an authored map or a procedural one?
Enshrouded’s world is handcrafted, so landmarks, regions and progression are deliberately arranged. Valheim’s world is procedurally generated, producing more variation between saves but less control over where major features appear. Grounded also uses an authored environment, while Nightingale organizes exploration around realms. Decide whether your group values a designed journey, replayable map generation or the ability to visit multiple distinct realms.
What kind of building is the priority?
Enshrouded combines voxel terrain editing with structural construction. Conan Exiles is the strongest alternative when building systems themselves are the reason to play. Valheim offers substantial construction within its Viking aesthetic. V Rising centers its base around a castle and its management systems. Palworld’s bases are closely tied to creature work and automation. Sons of the Forest emphasizes practical shelters and defensive construction, while Grounded makes building part of an approachable backyard adventure.

How much pressure should survival create?
Sons of the Forest places fear and danger at the center. Conan Exiles has a harsher survival identity. Valheim asks you to prepare for biomes and bosses. Grounded is generally easier to approach as a group because its story and setting provide clear context. If your group dislikes losing supplies or defending a base under pressure, choose a game whose challenge comes primarily from exploration and combat rather than scarcity.

Which progression fantasy sounds right?
Enshrouded is an action RPG with equipment choices and a large skill tree. Valheim’s progression is tied to biomes, materials and bosses. V Rising puts combat abilities and vampire advancement first. Palworld adds creature collection and worker automation. Nightingale emphasizes realm travel and fantasy survival. Identifying the progression fantasy prevents choosing a game that shares a crafting menu but not the reason your group keeps playing.
1. Valheim: the closest overall match
Choose Valheim when your group wants the same broad rhythm as Enshrouded: leave a shared base, gather materials, explore a dangerous region, improve equipment, defeat a boss and use the rewards to reach the next biome. Construction, food preparation, sailing and defensive planning give the whole party useful jobs between major fights.
Why it resembles Enshrouded
- Both games combine cooperative survival, resource gathering, crafting, exploration and building.
- Both use distinct environments and boss progression to structure advancement.
- Both let a group maintain a shared home and prepare for expeditions.
Where it differs
Valheim is Viking-inspired and procedurally generated, while Enshrouded is a handcrafted fantasy world. The procedural structure changes the feel of discovery: your group must scout for resources and landmarks rather than following a deliberately authored route. Valheim’s stated party range is 1–10 players, so it is a better fit for small and medium groups than for a full Enshrouded-sized party.
Who should choose it
Pick Valheim for a two-to-eight-player group that wants a long campaign built around preparation, biome transitions and bosses. It is also the safest choice when different players in the party enjoy different activities: builders can work on the settlement, explorers can chart the map, gatherers can stock materials and fighters can prepare for the next boss.
2. Palworld: best for creatures and automation
Palworld is the alternative for a group that wants survival crafting with a creature-collection and production layer. Bases are not only homes; they are working facilities whose output and upkeep depend on the creatures your group acquires and assigns. That changes the social rhythm from “who is gathering wood?” to “which creatures and systems should we deploy here?”
What carries over
You still explore, gather, craft, expand a shared base and improve your capabilities over time. Cooperative play works well when players divide responsibilities between expeditions, construction and base operations. The sandbox structure gives a group room to create its own routine rather than forcing every session into a linear mission sequence.
The trade-off
Palworld’s creature and automation focus is farther from Enshrouded’s action-RPG building loop. If your favorite Enshrouded moments are skill-based fights, terrain sculpting and designing grand halls, Palworld may feel like a different genre blend even though both are survival-crafting games. Choose it when collecting, breeding or optimizing a productive base sounds as appealing as fighting and building.

Best group profile
It suits players who enjoy assigning roles and improving systems over time. One player can concentrate on exploration and creature acquisition while others improve production lines or expand the settlement. The current player limit and platform support for your edition are not specified, so confirm them in the current platform listing.
3. V Rising: best for combat and castle management
V Rising narrows the survival formula around a vampire fantasy. The central loop is to fight, unlock new abilities, collect resources and develop a castle that serves as the group’s operational base. Online and LAN co-op support makes it a natural choice for friends who want shared progression but prefer combat to open-ended survival chores.
Why combat-focused groups choose it
Progression is directly tied to defeating enemies and acquiring stronger powers. Every expedition has a clear combat purpose, and the castle provides a visible record of the group’s advancement. Players who enjoyed Enshrouded’s equipment choices and action combat may find this more immediately focused than a general-purpose survival sandbox.
What you give up
The loop is more specialized. Castle ownership and management are central, and the vampire theme shapes the world, abilities and daily routine. It is not a replacement for Enshrouded’s terraforming, farming, fishing and broad survival toolkit. Choose it if your group wants a defined combat-and-base cycle rather than a world where every survival activity has equal weight.
4. Conan Exiles: best for construction depth
Conan Exiles is the strongest pick when the building system is the main reason your group is leaving Enshrouded. It combines open-world survival, crafting and construction with the ability to maintain single-player or cooperative saves. Settlements can become practical fortresses, themed compounds or large projects that demand planning from the whole party.
Why builders should consider it
The survival framework gives construction a purpose: a base protects supplies, supports crafting and provides a staging point for dangerous expeditions. That makes building more than decoration. Groups can assign roles such as resource hauling, defensive planning and workshop management, then expand the settlement as they gain access to better materials.
Edition and platform caveat
The developer’s platform information distinguishes the editions. The Enhanced update is a free Unreal Engine 5 update for PC Steam, while Xbox and PlayStation remain on the Unreal Engine 4 version and use official console servers. Do not assume that visual features, server behavior or update timing are identical across platforms; check the listing for the edition your group owns.

Who should skip it
Players looking for Enshrouded’s more guided dark-fantasy adventure may find Conan Exiles harsher and more survival-driven. It is a better fit for groups that enjoy managing exposure, supplies and a demanding settlement than for players who want a mostly relaxed building tour between story beats.
5. Grounded: best for approachable, story-led co-op
Grounded translates survival crafting into a backyard adventure. Its authored environment gives the group a clear sense of place, while the small scale turns ordinary household objects into landmarks, hazards and resources. The tone is more playful than Enshrouded’s dark fantasy, but the underlying activities remain familiar: explore, gather, craft, construct and work through cooperative objectives.
Why it works for mixed-experience groups
The setting makes systems easy to understand. New players can see why a base is being built, where resources come from and how exploration advances the story. That clarity helps when a group includes someone who has not played a demanding survival game before.
The trade-off
Grounded’s backyard scale and lighter tone are not cosmetic differences; they define the threats, visual language and sense of progression. If your group wants sweeping fantasy landscapes, imposing ruins and a darker combat atmosphere, it will feel intentionally different. Choose it when authored discovery and accessible co-op matter more than epic scale.
6. Sons of the Forest: best for survival horror
Sons of the Forest is the choice for groups that want exploration and construction under constant threat. Its cooperative survival loop emphasizes uncertainty, danger and scarcity. Building a shelter is not simply a creative project; it is part of surviving a hostile environment and preparing for what may approach after dark.
What Enshrouded players may enjoy
- Shared expeditions where the group decides how far to push into an unfamiliar area.
- Construction that has immediate defensive and logistical value.
- A world where exploration produces resources, discoveries and new risks.
Why it is not a direct substitute
Fear and survival pressure dominate the experience. The game is less about building an elaborate RPG character through a broad skill tree and more about staying equipped, finding shelter and managing threats. Choose it only if everyone in the group enjoys horror; a player who wants relaxed base decoration may find the danger exhausting rather than exciting.

Nightingale is the alternative for players attracted to overt fantasy, survival crafting and shared bases but interested in traveling between distinct realms. The realm structure changes how exploration works: instead of one continuous map serving as the entire campaign, the group moves through separate environments with their own opportunities and challenges.

Why it appeals to fantasy groups
Realm travel provides variety and gives the party a reason to prepare for different environments. Cooperative bases and survival crafting preserve the familiar foundation, while the setting offers a more explicitly fantastical adventure than a conventional wilderness survival game.

Its realm-based organization is less like Enshrouded’s continuous handcrafted world. If your group enjoys learning one large map, connecting settlements and returning to familiar landmarks, the segmented structure may feel less cohesive. Pick it when changing realms and fantasy atmosphere are more important than a single uninterrupted landscape.
Best choices by party size and play style
| Your group’s priority | First choice | Why | Check before starting |

Platform, hardware and session planning
Enshrouded on Windows
The Steam requirements list 16 GB of RAM, 60 GB of storage and a broadband connection. Those are the published requirements for the Windows listing, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or visual preset. Leave additional free storage for updates and saves, and ensure every player is using a compatible, current build.
Console availability
Keen Games’ FAQ states that Steam Early Access came first and that PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S were planned after completion. Treat that as a development statement rather than proof of current console availability. Check the live store listing for your region and platform immediately before purchase.
Shared-world responsibilities
Decide who owns or hosts the world, where the save is stored and when the group can play. A cooperative survival game is easier to sustain when one person is responsible for backups and another keeps a written list of unfinished construction or progression goals. This matters especially when players have different schedules and cannot all join every session.

A practical test before committing to a new game
- List the three Enshrouded activities your group actually repeats. Examples include building, boss fights, resource expeditions, terraforming or story exploration.
- Remove the activities nobody wants. If no one enjoys survival pressure, eliminate the harsher options even if their building systems look attractive.
- Choose the closest progression structure. Select biome-and-boss advancement, combat-and-castle management, creature automation, story objectives or realm travel.
- Verify the edition. Check player limits, platform support, cross-play and current server rules for the exact version each person will use.
- Run a low-cost first session. Spend the opening session learning movement, gathering and base tools rather than committing to a permanent megabase. You will discover quickly whether the game’s pace suits the group.
- Set a restart rule. Agree whether a new world begins when the host leaves, when a major boss is defeated or only when everyone votes. This prevents one absent player from becoming a permanent obstacle.
Bottom line: which game should you play after Enshrouded?
Start with Valheim if you want the most recognizable replacement for Enshrouded’s cooperative survival-crafting loop. It preserves the shared base, exploration, biomes, construction and boss journey, but changes the setting to Viking mythology and the world to procedural generation.
Choose Conan Exiles when construction is the deciding factor, V Rising when combat and castle management matter most, Palworld when creatures and automation are the attraction, Grounded when your group wants an approachable authored story, Sons of the Forest when horror is essential, and Nightingale when realm-based fantasy exploration sounds more exciting than one continuous map. Keep Enshrouded itself on the shortlist for groups that need a handcrafted fantasy world, voxel terrain shaping and support for up to 16 players.
