Gears of War: E-Day is the current first-party choice, while other games serve different parts of the appeal: UNCHARTED: The Lost Legacy for cinematic adventure, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 for brutal close-quarters action, The Last of Us Part I for a solo emotional story, and Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 for an ongoing online shooter ecosystem.
Those games are not interchangeable. This guide separates mechanical matches from presentation, narrative and service-game alternatives so you can choose the one that reproduces the part of Gears you actually miss.

What makes a game feel like Gears of War?
Gears is more specific than “a third-person shooter.” The defining loop is moving between hard cover, taking fights from protected positions, managing aggressive enemies at close and medium range, and advancing through a cinematic campaign with a squad. The franchise also treats cooperative play as a core mode rather than an optional extra: the Xbox listing describes solo, split-screen and up-to-four-player online campaign options, alongside Horde and Versus modes.
The Coalition identifies four pillars for the series—movement, cover, weapons and enemies—and says moving from cover to cover is central to campaign, Horde and Versus play. That gives us a useful way to judge alternatives:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Cover fidelity: Does the game make positioning and movement between cover the main combat language?
- Campaign co-op: Can you play the story with another person locally or online?
- Cinematic presentation: Are story scenes, set pieces, exploration and character relationships as important as shooting?
- Combat intensity: Does the game emphasize heavy, direct action rather than cautious stealth or long-range marksmanship?
- Long-term structure: Is it a self-contained campaign or an evolving online service?
On those criteria, Reloaded and E-Day are the closest mechanical matches. The other four are better understood as targeted substitutes.

1. Gears of War: Reloaded — the closest mechanical match
If your request is simply “give me Gears again,” start here. PlayStation describes Reloaded as the original third-person cover shooter and lists the complete combination that defines the reference experience: a solo story, split-screen campaign play and online co-op story play.
Why it matches
Reloaded keeps the elements that make Gears distinct rather than borrowing only its camera angle. The campaign is organized around squad combat and movement from one piece of cover to the next. That makes it the strongest choice for players who want the same rhythm of advancing, anchoring a position, clearing an enemy group and pushing forward with a partner.
It is also the safest recommendation for a group choosing a game together. Local split-screen matters if two people share a display, while online story co-op covers the more common case of playing from separate systems. PlayStation’s listing does not state a player-count maximum for online story play, so it is better not to assume that every mode supports the same number of participants.
Who should choose Reloaded?
- Players who value cover movement over open-ended exploration.
- Friends who want a campaign rather than a separate multiplayer-only mode.
- Anyone looking for the original Gears identity instead of a genre-adjacent alternative.
Reloaded is less useful if your priority is a newer setting, a different narrative tone or an evolving online game. In those cases, use the branches below.
2. Gears of War: E-Day — the current first-party option
E-Day is set fourteen years before the original game and follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago at the beginning of their story. The Xbox listing presents it as a current first-party Gears release for Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a listed release date of October 6, 2026. It also lists Game Pass inclusion, standard and premium editions, purchase options, solo and split-screen play, up-to-four-player online campaign support, Horde Siege and Versus.

What changes in the cover system?
The Coalition says the rebuilt system supports more cover types and movement options, including sliding, climbing, cover gaps and weapon changes, while retaining the series’ core intensity. Its stated design goal is precise: “Gears of War defined the third-person cover shooter and we’ve refined the formula, focusing on the core Gears pillars: movement, cover, weapons and enemies.”

That description makes E-Day a better fit than a generic third-person action game for anyone who wants familiar cover logic with a modernized movement set. The evidence supports refinement, not a claim that every encounter behaves exactly like the original. If your priority is historical authenticity, Reloaded comes first; if you want the same universe with the current feature set, E-Day is the logical next choice.
Co-op and modes
E-Day is unusually complete for a campaign-focused recommendation. You can play alone, use split-screen, or bring up to four players into the online campaign. Horde Siege and Versus add separate multiplayer structures, so the purchase is not limited to finishing the story once. Game Pass is listed as an access route, while standard and premium editions are also documented on the Xbox page.
Who should choose E-Day?
- Players who want the newest first-party entry rather than a remastered starting point.
- Groups of up to four looking specifically for online campaign play.
- Fans interested in Marcus and Dom’s origin story.
- Players who want campaign, Horde and Versus under one current release.
3. UNCHARTED: The Lost Legacy — the best cinematic-adventure substitute
Choose The Lost Legacy when “cinematic” matters more to you than reproducing Gears’ cover rhythm. Sony presents it as a character-led adventure starring Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross in India’s Western Ghats. Its structure combines cinematic combat with exploration, traversal, puzzles and large action set pieces.
Where it overlaps with Gears
The overlap is in presentation and pacing. Both games are built to move between story scenes, traversal and bursts of combat, and both use third-person action to stage large, directed moments. The Lost Legacy is therefore a strong choice for someone who remembers Gears primarily as a blockbuster campaign with memorable companions and set pieces.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhere it differs
It is not a one-to-one cover-shooter replacement. The official description gives equal weight to exploration, traversal and puzzles, so its moment-to-moment structure is broader than a campaign centered on repeated cover advances. Sony’s listing does not present campaign co-op as a reason to buy it; treat it as a solo adventure choice rather than a Gears-style co-op campaign.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Who should choose The Lost Legacy?
- Players who want a tightly directed cinematic journey.
- Anyone who prefers character relationships and location-based adventure to constant firefights.
- Players with access to PS4 or PS5; the official page lists both platforms and a 2017 release.
4. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 — for heavier, more aggressive action
Space Marine 2 is the right detour when the part of Gears you want is physical impact and relentless third-person combat. PlayStation lists a purchasable PS5 edition, a 2024 release, online support, intense violence and the Warhammer 40,000 setting.
Why Gears fans may enjoy it
Its appeal is direct, close-quarters action. That makes it a useful recommendation for players who want a large-scale, forceful combat experience rather than a quiet or stealth-heavy campaign. The third-person perspective and emphasis on intensity place it in the same broad neighborhood as Gears, especially for players who remember the series for momentum and aggression.
Why it is not a Gears clone
The PlayStation listing supports a clear distinction: Space Marine 2 is more aggressive and less about reproducing Gears’ exact cover rhythm. Do not buy it expecting every encounter to be solved by the same cover-to-cover cadence. Buy it if you are happy for close-range brutality and online play to take priority over a faithful cover system.
Who should choose Space Marine 2?
- Players who rank combat intensity above mechanical similarity.
- Fans of the Warhammer 40,000 setting.
- People who want online support and a current PS5 release.
5. The Last of Us Part I — the solo, story-first alternative
The Last of Us Part I is the recommendation for readers who use “cinematic” to mean emotional storytelling, memorable characters and a strongly authored journey. PlayStation lists PS5 and PC versions, one-player offline play, and a story in which Joel escorts Ellie across a ravaged civilization.
What it shares with Gears
It is a third-person, story-led action game in which the relationship between the central characters gives the campaign its momentum. Like Gears, it treats combat as part of a larger dramatic journey instead of an endless sequence of disconnected arenas.
What to expect instead of co-op
PlayStation’s listing explicitly describes this as a one-player offline experience. It should not be presented as a replacement for split-screen or online campaign co-op. Choose it when solo play and emotional storytelling matter more than playing through a campaign with friends.

Who should choose The Last of Us Part I?
- Solo players who want the narrative to lead the experience.
- Readers looking for emotional storytelling and character-focused drama.
- Players on PS5 or PC who do not need a cooperative campaign.
6. Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 — the ongoing online cover-shooter lane
The Division 2 belongs on this list for a different reason: it offers an evolving online shooter ecosystem rather than a self-contained Gears-style campaign. Its current page shows seasonal events, downloadable-content announcements, PvP updates and crossplay-related news in October 2026.

When it makes sense
Choose it if your priority is having an online game to return to after the main story, with continuing events and updates. That service structure is the key attraction for players who want a persistent shooter community rather than a single campaign that ends when the credits roll.
Important qualification
Platform, pricing and current-season details change frequently. Check the current official listing before buying or joining, especially if your group depends on a particular platform or crossplay arrangement. Its page shows ongoing updates, but it does not provide a stable, universal price or a single platform matrix that can be applied to every region.

If you want the closest cover-and-co-op formula
Pick Gears of War: Reloaded. It is the cleanest match for the original third-person cover-shooter structure and supports solo, split-screen and online story play. Pick E-Day instead if you want a current release, up-to-four-player online campaign support, Horde Siege and Versus, or the Marcus-and-Dom origin story.
If cinematic set pieces matter more than cover fidelity
Pick UNCHARTED: The Lost Legacy. Its identity is built from cinematic combat, exploration, traversal, puzzles and action set pieces, with Chloe and Nadine carrying the story through the Western Ghats.
If you want the most forceful combat
Pick Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. It is the strongest fit for brutal, close-quarters action and online play, but it should be treated as an aggressive alternative rather than a mechanical Gears replica.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
If you play alone and want emotional storytelling
Pick The Last of Us Part I. Its one-player structure and Joel-and-Ellie story make it the clearest choice for a narrative-first campaign, not a cooperative shooter night.
If you want a game that keeps changing
Pick The Division 2, after checking the live platform, price and season information. Its value comes from seasonal events, DLC, PvP updates and crossplay-related activity, not from recreating a fixed Gears campaign.
Co-op decision guide
| Your group | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Two people sharing one screen | Reloaded or E-Day | Both listings include split-screen campaign play. |
| Online story group of up to four | E-Day | The Xbox listing specifically states up-to-four-player online campaign play. |
| Online play without a fixed campaign priority | Space Marine 2 or The Division 2 | Space Marine 2 lists online support; The Division 2 is built around an ongoing online ecosystem. |
| Solo player | The Last of Us Part I or The Lost Legacy | Both are presented as story-led choices; The Last of Us Part I is explicitly one-player offline. |
Buying and platform notes
For E-Day, the Xbox page documents Xbox Series X|S and PC availability, standard and premium editions, purchase options and Game Pass inclusion. It lists October 6, 2026 as the release date. If you are shopping for a physical copy, the clearest product wording is “Gears of War: E-Day Xbox Series X game”; seller condition, regional pricing and stock are account- and location-dependent.

Common mistakes when choosing a Gears-like game
- Equating third-person perspective with Gears-style combat: A camera behind the character does not guarantee the same cover movement or encounter rhythm.
- Assuming every recommendation has campaign co-op: Reloaded and E-Day are the clear campaign-co-op choices in this list; The Last of Us Part I is one-player offline, and The Lost Legacy is not presented as a co-op recommendation.
- Ignoring the game’s long-term structure: The Division 2 is an evolving service game, while the other recommendations are framed around campaigns or fixed releases.
- Using “cinematic” as a synonym for “cover shooter”: The Lost Legacy and The Last of Us Part I match presentation or narrative priorities, not the full Gears combat formula.
- Relying on old platform or pricing information: E-Day’s listing includes a dated release and Game Pass route, while The Division 2’s live events and crossplay details can change.
Final recommendation
Start with Gears of War: Reloaded if your definition of “like Gears” is cover movement, squad combat and a cooperative story. Move to Gears of War: E-Day for the current first-party version, expanded movement options, up-to-four-player online campaign play and additional Horde and Versus modes. Choose The Lost Legacy, Space Marine 2, The Last of Us Part I or The Division 2 only after deciding whether your priority is cinematic adventure, brutal action, solo drama or an ongoing online game.
