The “while you wait” wording needs an update: Hytale entered Early Access, and its official blog reported Chapter I: Out of the Breach released on October 12, 2026. The alternatives below are for players who want a different shared experience now, or who are waiting for Hytale features that are still being developed.

What Hytale players are actually waiting for
Hytale is no longer an unreleased game. Its October 12, 2026 Chapter I launch put an Early Access build in players’ hands, but Early Access means the feature set is still changing. The January 2026 announcement described the build as rough and unfinished. Multiplayer was included, while Adventure Mode, official minigames and some social features were not included at launch. Later patches can change that list, so check the current build notes before making a purchase decision.
A July 16, 2026 preview from Game Director Simon Collins-Laflamme said, “To be transparent, there aren’t many reasons to come back and play Hytale right now.” That was a pre-release assessment made before Chapter I arrived, not a current verdict on the October build. For a group asking whether any Minecraft- or Hytale-like games are available, the practical question is now: which game delivers the particular loop you want while Hytale continues to expand?
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Hytale’s appeal sits at the intersection of several genres rather than one exact feature. Friends may be looking for free-form building, a persistent shared world, survival gathering, exploration, combat, structured progression, or a place to experiment together. No alternative below reproduces every part of that combination. Match the game to the loop your group will actually play for several evenings.

Minecraft: the closest familiar sandbox
Why it is the safest shared-world pick
Minecraft is the strongest fit when the group’s main goal is to make a world together rather than follow a fixed campaign. Its building tools support anything from a small survival shelter to a large collaborative project. Players can divide jobs naturally: one person gathers materials, another explores, another farms, and another plans a build. That flexibility makes it the nearest general-purpose substitute for the sandbox side of Hytale.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The official Minecraft site points players toward multiplayer information and Realms, so a group can choose between a shared hosted world and other multiplayer arrangements supported by its edition. The exact experience depends on whether everyone is using the same edition and compatible systems. Do not assume that owning the game on one platform automatically gives access to every other platform’s multiplayer features.
Nintendo Switch multiplayer numbers
Nintendo’s product page for Minecraft on Switch gives concrete limits for that edition:
- Single-system play: 1–4 players.
- Local wireless: 2–8 players.
- Online play: 2–8 players.
- Online requirement: Nintendo Switch Online for online play.
Those figures describe Nintendo’s Switch listing, not every version of Minecraft. A group combining Switch, PC or another console should verify the relevant edition, account requirements and multiplayer support before buying. Also check whether a physical cartridge, digital copy or another platform version is what your friends actually own; those formats should not be treated as interchangeable.
How to organize a Minecraft group
- Choose the edition first. Ask every player which system they will use and select a version that supports the intended group.
- Decide whether the world is temporary or persistent. A hosted world works for scheduled sessions; a Realm-style arrangement is more suitable when people need to enter while the original host is away, provided that option is available for the chosen edition.
- Agree on a starting rule set. Decide whether the world is survival or creative, whether difficulty changes are allowed, and whether players may use commands or add-ons.
- Set a shared project. A town, rail line, map room or themed base gives the group a reason to return after the first resource-gathering session.
- Keep versions and add-ons aligned. Mismatched updates or incompatible add-ons can prevent friends from joining even when they own the same game.
Where Minecraft differs from Hytale
Minecraft is intentionally open-ended. If your group wants a directed adventure structure, class-like roles or a more authored world, you may need to create those goals yourselves with a build theme, an agreed progression path or compatible add-ons. That freedom is a strength for builders, but it can leave a group without a plan after the first weekend. Minecraft is the right recommendation when sandbox freedom matters more than a built-in campaign.
Valheim: survival, exploration and boss progression
Why choose it
Valheim is the better choice when your group wants the world to push back. You gather materials, construct a defensible base, cross increasingly dangerous environments and prepare for boss encounters. The loop is cooperative by design: one player can scout, another can improve equipment, and the whole group can build the infrastructure needed for the next expedition.

- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
It is not a block-building clone of Hytale. Building is important, but the emphasis is on survival logistics, exploration and progression through threats. Weather, hostile creatures, travel planning and equipment preparation make a return trip feel different from a purely creative sandbox session.
Group size and hosting
Iron Gate Studio’s official site states: “Play alone, or with up to nine other people.” That means the published figure is one player plus as many as nine others. The site also supports independent player-hosted servers, giving a group a way to control its own world rather than relying only on a particular friend being online.
Before starting, decide who will maintain the world and where the server will run. A player-hosted world is simple for a small, scheduled group, but the host’s availability becomes part of the routine. An independently managed server can keep the world available, yet someone must handle access, backups and updates.
A practical first-session plan
- Designate a base location. Choose somewhere with access to basic resources and room for expansion, rather than scattering houses across the starting area.
- Assign early jobs. Have one or two players gather food and building materials while another explores nearby landmarks and another establishes crafting stations.
- Set an expedition rule. Tell the group when it is safe to travel together and when a player should leave valuables at home. A single lost load can erase an evening’s progress.
- Progress as a group. Boss encounters unlock the rhythm of the game. Schedule them when everyone who needs the rewards can attend, and prepare spare equipment before the fight.
- Back up or protect the world. Player-hosted saves and server data are valuable. Decide how the group will recover if a host loses a file or an update causes a problem.
Who may not enjoy it
Valheim’s pressure can frustrate friends who want to build immediately without gathering, travel or combat preparation. It also asks the group to coordinate its pace: a player who advances alone may unlock dangers or consume resources before the rest are ready. Choose it for a team that enjoys planning and risk, not for a group seeking a relaxed construction tool.
Vintage Story: the deep-survival alternative
What makes it different
Vintage Story is an Early Access wilderness survival sandbox built around simulation depth. Its official site describes several playstyles, ranging from creative to hardcore, so the same game can support experimentation or a demanding survival run. The appeal is not simply placing blocks; it is understanding the environment, managing resources and building a sustainable settlement.
That makes it a strong choice for Hytale fans who are most interested in survival systems and a world that rewards careful preparation. It is a weaker choice for a casual group that wants to log in for twenty minutes, improvise a build and leave without learning its systems.
World styles and learning curve
Choose the world style before inviting friends. Creative removes the resource pressure and is useful for builders. A standard survival approach keeps gathering, crafting and environmental risk in the loop. Hardcore rules raise the cost of mistakes and are best reserved for a group that already understands the game.

- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
Start with a short orientation session rather than promising a grand settlement immediately. Teach the group where food comes from, how tools are made and how to store materials. Once everyone can maintain a basic shelter and supplies, set a project such as a farm, workshop or trading route.
Multiplayer, modding and anti-griefing
The official site lists Windows, Mac and Linux support, multiplayer anti-griefing mechanics and modding support. Those features matter for a long-running community world: permissions and anti-griefing tools help protect shared construction, while mods can let an established group tune the experience.
Mods should be treated as a group decision. Record the exact mod list and versions, install them consistently and agree on a recovery plan if a mod update breaks the world. A lightly modified first session is usually easier for a mixed-experience group than asking everyone to install a large collection immediately.
Who should pick it
Choose Vintage Story when the group enjoys discovering systems, maintaining a settlement and taking survival seriously. Avoid presenting it as a frictionless replacement for Hytale’s more accessible fantasy. Its Early Access status and simulation focus mean the onboarding burden is part of the appeal for some players and a deal-breaker for others.

The core appeal
Enshrouded combines a voxel-shaped world with the structure of a light survival action RPG. Its official site highlights a handcrafted world, voxel terraforming, building and exploration. That combination suits players who want to reshape terrain and create a home, but also expect combat abilities, dangerous areas and a more authored journey than a pure sandbox provides.
Think of it as a building-and-exploration game with action at its center. The voxel tools are there to make construction and terrain changes meaningful, while the handcrafted setting gives expeditions a destination and a sense of place. It is therefore a good recommendation for a group split between builders and players who want active combat.
Verify the multiplayer details for your group
The information available for this comparison does not establish Enshrouded’s group-size limit or cross-platform compatibility. Check the current store listing and technical requirements for every platform in your group before purchase. Confirm whether friends can join the same world, whether an account or subscription is required, and how the save is hosted.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Do not promise cross-play simply because the game has multiplayer. Platform support can differ by version and can change during development. Make the purchase decision only after every player’s system has been checked against the current requirements.
How to start without splitting the party
- Choose one shared building site. A central base lets builders work while combat-focused players prepare for expeditions.
- Alternate activities. Plan a building session, then a combat or exploration session, so one playstyle does not dominate every evening.
- Clarify progression expectations. Decide whether the group waits for everyone before major story or area advances.
- Confirm save ownership. Identify who can launch the world and how the group will continue if that person is unavailable.
Match the game to your group’s play loop
Choose Minecraft for maximum creative freedom
Pick Minecraft when the sentence “let’s build a shared world” is more important than “let’s defeat the next boss.” It accommodates players who want to create, explore or simply socialize, and the Switch edition has clearly documented local and online player modes. The trade-off is that the group must provide its own structure if it wants a campaign-like experience.
Choose Valheim for cooperative survival goals
Pick Valheim when everyone enjoys gathering, preparation and dangerous expeditions. Its published capacity of up to nine other people makes it suitable for a larger friend group, and player-hosted servers give the group control over its world. The trade-off is that building and exploration are tied to survival demands.
Choose Vintage Story for simulation depth
Pick Vintage Story when the group likes learning detailed systems and protecting a long-term settlement. Creative through hardcore world styles, modding and anti-griefing tools provide room to tailor a community server. The trade-off is a steeper learning curve and an Early Access experience.
Choose Enshrouded for builders who want combat
Pick Enshrouded when voxel construction and terrain shaping need to coexist with action-RPG combat in a handcrafted world. Verify multiplayer and platform details first, because the available information does not establish a universal group-size or cross-platform promise.
Platform and connection checks before anyone buys
Most multiplayer disappointment happens before the first loading screen. Use this checklist in the group chat:
- List every player’s platform and edition. Do not rely on the game title alone; editions can have different features.
- Confirm the multiplayer mode. Distinguish local play, local wireless, online matchmaking, hosted worlds and dedicated or independently managed servers.
- Check subscriptions and accounts. Nintendo’s Switch listing, for example, requires Nintendo Switch Online for online play.
- Ask who owns the save. If one person hosts, decide what happens when that person is offline or loses a save.
- Agree on update and mod policy. Everyone should run compatible versions before troubleshooting network problems.
- Set a realistic session length. Survival games often involve preparation before a major expedition; schedule enough time that players do not feel forced to rush.
Common problems and how to avoid them
“We bought the same game but cannot join.”
Check edition, platform support, account permissions, required online subscriptions and game versions in that order. A shared title is not proof of shared multiplayer compatibility. For Enshrouded especially, verify the current platform and cross-play information before purchase rather than after installation.
Best Value
- The Minecraft Labyrinth invites 2-4 people aged 7 and over to immerse themselves in the world of Minecraft, move corridors and search for hidden characters and items

“The host is never online.”
Use a hosting arrangement that matches the group’s schedule. Valheim’s official site documents independent player-hosted servers; Minecraft’s official materials describe Realms as a multiplayer option. For every other setup, identify the save owner and a backup plan before investing in a persistent world.
Recommended Free Tools
“One player is far ahead.”
Agree on progression rules. In Valheim, schedule bosses when the group is present. In Vintage Story, decide whether a player may change the world or install mods without group approval. In Minecraft, use a shared project and optional milestones so latecomers have a clear way to contribute.
“Griefing or accidental damage ruined the base.”
Restrict permissions where the game allows it, keep backups and establish a simple code of conduct. Vintage Story specifically advertises multiplayer anti-griefing mechanics, but no tool replaces a trusted group and a recovery plan.
“The game feels unlike Hytale.”
That is expected. Minecraft emphasizes open-ended building, Valheim emphasizes survival progression, Vintage Story emphasizes simulation, and Enshrouded emphasizes voxel construction alongside action-RPG combat. Choose the closest loop rather than searching for a perfect one-to-one substitute.
A practical shortlist for October 2026
For the broadest shared sandbox, start with Minecraft and verify the edition your group will use. For a coordinated survival campaign, choose Valheim and plan around its up-to-10-player published capacity. For a technically minded group that wants deeper wilderness systems, choose Vintage Story. For a party that wants construction plus active combat, investigate Enshrouded after checking current multiplayer and platform support.
Hytale’s Early Access release changes the meaning of “waiting,” not the reason to compare alternatives. You may be waiting for a preferred mode, official minigames, social features or a more finished build. The best temporary game is the one whose central loop your friends will still enjoy after the novelty of starting a new world wears off.
