If you want colorful, character-led action and worlds built around friendship, start with Kingdom Hearts (the franchise associated with the “Kernal Hearts” wording). If you want faster hack-and-slash combat, a darker science-fiction setting and a story built around routes and endings, choose NieR:Automata. Both are real-time action RPGs, but their tone, structure and buying options are dramatically different.
What “games like Kernal Hearts and NieR:Automata” really means
The two names point to overlapping tastes rather than one precise formula. Both anchor properties put a named protagonist at the center of a fantasy or science-fiction journey and let you fight in real time instead of selecting attacks from a purely turn-based menu. Beyond that shared foundation, they ask for different moods and different kinds of attention.

Choose by combat first
When Kingdom Hearts-style combat is the better fit
Choose the Kingdom Hearts side if you want an approachable action system that keeps the character moving while abilities and set-piece effects provide the spectacle. The appeal is immediate feedback: attacks, spells and other abilities are used during active encounters, and the fantasy presentation keeps the action readable even when the screen becomes busy.
This is the stronger choice for players who enjoy a heroic adventure that can be played in short sessions but still rewards learning a broader series continuity. The combat is real-time without requiring you to approach every battle as a precision exercise. If your ideal action RPG lets you experiment with abilities while following a colorful cast through distinct worlds, this is the closest match.
When NieR:Automata-style combat is the better fit
Choose NieR:Automata if the priority is speed, attack flow and a more demanding action vocabulary. PlatinumGames’ involvement is reflected in the game’s fast hack-and-slash identity, while ranged support gives you another layer of control during encounters. The game also changes how it presents action from one sequence to the next, so the experience is not limited to a single combat perspective.

- INCLUDING FREE MERCENARY LOADOUT DLC: The Mercenary is a special class loadout. The Mercenary has dual-wield as a starting ability and is geared up with classic blades. Simply put, it'll let you experience the world of BIOMUTANT as classic samurai looking warrior from the start.
- A NEW TAKE ON 3rd PERSON COMBAT: The martial arts style combat system allows you maximum freedom of movement and agility while mixing shooting, melee and powers from your mutations.
- EVOLVE YOUR GAME-PLAY: You’ll be able to recode your genetic structure to change the way you look and play.
- NEXT LEVEL OF CRAFTING: Mix and match parts to create your own unique single- or double-handed slash, crush and pierce melee weapons.
- GEAR UP FOR ADVENTURE: You have full freedom when equipping your character. Not only when it comes to choosing weapons you created, but also what type of gear you wear.
This is the stronger choice if you want battles to sit inside a bleak science-fiction world and you are comfortable with a narrative that asks you to revisit events through routes and endings. Its deliberate repetition is part of the design, not simply a request to replay the same content without context.
Questions to ask before buying
- Do you want an upbeat fantasy journey or a post-apocalyptic science-fiction story?
- Would you rather chain frequent abilities in a spectacle-heavy system or prioritize fast hack-and-slash movement with ranged support?
- Do you prefer world-hopping continuity across a series or exploration shaped by routes and endings?
- Which platform do you already own, and is the edition you want listed for your region?
Why Kingdom Hearts is the best fit for bright, crossover fantasy
A series-first adventure
Kingdom Hearts is designed as a connected property rather than a one-off setting. A collection is therefore more useful than choosing an isolated entry when you want to understand the larger journey. Square Enix’s catalog lists KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III], giving newcomers a straightforward starting point when that collection is offered in their market.
The series’ defining appeal is the combination of a named hero, a friendship-centered fantasy tone and visits to crossover worlds. That structure makes each area feel like a new chapter while the continuing cast supplies a through-line. It is a good recommendation for players who want the destination to be as important as the combat system.
What the combat asks of you
The action is real time and ability-driven. You can expect frequent use of attacks and powers rather than waiting for a turn, but the design is aimed at accessibility and spectacle. That makes it a sensible first action RPG for someone who wants immediate control without beginning with the most severe execution demands.
Rank #3
Difficulty, camera behavior and the amount of story context you already know can change how an individual entry feels. Treat the collection as a continuity decision, not a promise that every chapter has identical pacing or balance.
Who should start here
- Players who want colorful fantasy rather than bleak science fiction.
- Readers who enjoy friendship themes and a continuing cast.
- Anyone who prefers a world-hopping structure to a route-and-ending format.
- Players buying for a family or mixed-experience audience that values an accessible action baseline.
Why NieR:Automata is the best fit for dark, exploratory science fiction
A post-apocalyptic setting with a route-based shape
Square Enix describes NieR:Automata as a post-apocalyptic action RPG. The setting and tone are intentionally somber, and the narrative structure uses routes and endings rather than presenting one uninterrupted path as the complete experience. Exploration and repetition therefore have a deliberate role in how the story is understood.
If you normally stop after the first ending in a story-driven game, plan your expectations differently here. The route structure is a reason to continue, not evidence that the first pass failed to resolve every question. Go in expecting the game to reframe events as you progress.

PlatinumGames develops the title, and its combat identity is built around quick hack-and-slash exchanges. Ranged support complements close attacks, allowing you to alter your approach without leaving the action system. The game also shifts its presentation and genre conventions during the journey, which is one reason it feels distinct from a conventional single-view melee RPG.

Edition and platform guide
Availability changes by storefront and region, so treat the lists below as a buying checklist rather than a permanent guarantee. Confirm the platform SKU, edition name, stock and price at the store you intend to use.
| Game or edition | What the official listing establishes | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| NieR:Automata Game of the YoRHa Edition | The PlayStation listing identifies this edition and says it includes the main game, downloadable content and multiple in-game items. Official developer information identifies PlatinumGames, Square Enix and releases for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows. | Whether the specific platform SKU is sold in your region, whether it is physical or digital, current stock and current price. |
| NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition | Square Enix describes this as the Nintendo Switch version of NieR:Automata and calls the game a post-apocalyptic action RPG. | Regional storefront listing, language options, physical availability and current price. |
| KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III] | Square Enix’s catalog lists the collection across PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox Game Pass, Windows, Epic Games Store, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and GOG. | Whether your region offers a native purchase, cloud or subscription access, the exact contents, and whether the listing is physical or digital. |
A platform appearing in a catalog does not prove that every edition is in stock everywhere. Storefront rights, language support and distribution can differ by country, and subscription access can change independently of a one-time purchase.
How to choose the right purchase in five steps
- Pick the emotional register. Select Kingdom Hearts for bright fantasy and friendship-centered crossover adventures. Select NieR:Automata for somber science fiction and a post-apocalyptic setting.
- Pick the combat rhythm. If accessible, spectacle-heavy ability use sounds right, start with Kingdom Hearts. If rapid hack-and-slash, ranged support and changing combat presentation appeal more, start with NieR:Automata.
- Pick the structure you will actually finish. A world-hopping series rewards attention to continuity. A route-and-ending game rewards returning to the story after an initial run.
- Match the edition to your hardware. Check the official catalog and your local store for the exact console, PC storefront or subscription listing. Do not assume that a collection name means identical contents on every platform.
- Confirm the transaction details. Before paying, verify region, language, physical versus digital format, included downloadable content, stock and the current price. Those details are volatile and are not established by an edition name alone.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating the two games as interchangeable
Both are action RPGs, but the tone difference is fundamental. Buying one while expecting the other’s mood can make a technically excellent game feel wrong. Decide whether you want bright fantasy or bleak science fiction before comparing prices.
Best Value
- Game of the YoRHa Edition includes the game along with DLC and bonus content for the full experience of the award winning post-apocalyptic action RPG; See description below for complete details
- Action packed battles and fluid combat perfect for both newcomers and experienced action gamers
- Includes RPG elements such as leveling, different weapon types, combat skills, and customizable load outs
- The desolate open world features beautiful vistas and a wealth of sidequests in addition to the main storyline
- Pods assist in and outside of battle and can be upgraded with new attack variations and abilities
Mistake: assuming a complete-sounding edition is universally complete
Game of the YoRHa Edition has a verified PlayStation description that includes the main game, downloadable content and multiple in-game items. That does not establish identical packaging on every platform or in every region. Read the local product description and confirm the platform SKU.
Mistake: reading a catalog platform list as a stock promise
Square Enix’s collection catalog lists many platforms and storefronts, including consoles, PC stores and Xbox Game Pass. A catalog entry is not a guarantee that your local store has a copy today. Check the live listing immediately before purchase.
Mistake: expecting the first NieR:Automata route to answer everything
The route and ending structure is part of the intended design. If you want the broader narrative, continue through the available routes rather than judging the game solely on the first pass.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Mistake: starting a long series without deciding how much continuity you want
The KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III] is useful when you want a connected series experience. If you only want a single, darker action RPG, NieR:Automata presents the cleaner one-game decision.
A decision matrix for different kinds of players
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Colorful fantasy and friendship | Kingdom Hearts | Its tone and crossover-world structure are built around that experience. |
| Post-apocalyptic science fiction | NieR:Automata | The setting and existential focus are central rather than decorative. |
| Accessible real-time spectacle | Kingdom Hearts | Frequent ability use and a readable action baseline make it the gentler entry. |
| Fast hack-and-slash depth | NieR:Automata | Close attacks, ranged support and changing presentation reward active combat play. |
| World-hopping continuity | KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III] | The collection is the most direct way to approach the listed trilogy grouping. |
| Routes and endings | NieR:Automata | Revisiting the story is part of how its narrative unfolds. |
| Nintendo Switch play | NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition or the regional Kingdom Hearts listing | Both properties have Nintendo Switch listings, but exact access and format vary by region. |
What to check on your platform before you buy
- Console generation: Confirm whether the listing is for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, rather than assuming backward compatibility from a store search result.
- PC storefront: The Square Enix catalog names Windows, Epic Games Store and GOG for the Kingdom Hearts collection; verify which storefront serves your country and which collection contents it carries.
- Subscription access: Xbox Game Pass is listed for the Kingdom Hearts collection, but subscription catalogs can change. Check the live service page for your region.
- Edition contents: For NieR:Automata Game of the YoRHa Edition, look for the explicit inclusion of the main game, DLC and in-game items in the local description.
- Format and language: Physical, digital and subscription versions can have different availability and language information. Read the product page, not only the search result title.
Which one should you play first?
Play Kingdom Hearts first if your immediate goal is an upbeat, crossover-driven fantasy adventure with accessible real-time action. The collection route makes sense when you want a continuing series and are willing to follow its broader continuity.
Play NieR:Automata first if you want a darker, more contemplative action RPG whose combat stays fast while its story explores a post-apocalyptic world through routes and endings. The Game of the YoRHa Edition is the relevant package when its verified included content and your platform match; on Nintendo Switch, look for The End of YoRHa Edition.
There is no universal winner because the games optimize for different experiences. Match mood and combat before comparing editions, then validate the exact regional listing at the moment you buy.
