Fallen Aces: The A.C.E.S. is the closest match if what you want after MOUSE: P.I. For Hire is a noir investigation wrapped around a first-person shooter. Forgive Me Father 2 is the better follow-up for players who care more about hand-drawn visuals, hordes of enemies and old-school combat than detective fiction. Neither is a complete substitute: MOUSE is unusual because it combines rubber-hose cartoon art, a private-eye story, high-speed movement and detective downtime in one game.
This guide compares those games by the things that define MOUSE: combat tempo, movement, traversal and backtracking, visual style, noir emphasis, and how much story sits between firefights.

Quick answer: which game should you play first?
| Game | Best for | What overlaps with MOUSE | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fallen Aces: The A.C.E.S. | Noir detectives, crime stories and comic-book presentation | A private investigator protagonist, a crime-noir setting and illustrated visual language | Its combat and presentation are different from MOUSE; the cited description does not establish the same wall-running, grappling or double-jump system |
| Forgive Me Father 2 | Hand-drawn art, enemy hordes and classic retro-FPS action | Illustrated visuals, old-school shooter structure, large enemy encounters and an arsenal of weapons | It prioritizes supernatural action over MOUSE’s detective casework and noir investigation |
| MOUSE: P.I. For Hire | The complete blend of cartoon noir and movement-heavy shooting | The reference point for every comparison in this article | Its combination of private-eye storytelling, rubber-hose animation and traversal abilities is the hardest part to replace |
If you want the shortest recommendation: choose Fallen Aces for the detective angle, choose Forgive Me Father 2 for the illustrated boomer-shooter angle, and return to MOUSE when you want both at once.

MOUSE: P.I. For Hire is built around a tension that most retro-FPS games do not attempt. It looks like a black-and-white cartoon from the 1930s, yet it expects you to fight at modern boomer-shooter speed. The official description from Fumi Games and PlaySide Studios calls it a combination of hand-drawn rubber-hose animation and an explosive first-person shooter. That contrast is not just a visual gimmick: it affects the weapons, enemies, environments and tone of the whole campaign.

Fast shooting with movement as a survival tool
The basic loop is aggressive. You move through arenas, fire cartoon-styled weapons, use upgrades and take on lethal encounters and bosses. PC Gamer describes the combat as boomer-shooter paced, with alternate-fire options, environmental attacks and movement controls that let you dance around crowded arenas. The fundamentals were described as tight, so success depends on keeping momentum and choosing how to combine your weapon functions with the space around you rather than simply standing behind cover.
Traversal is part of that identity. Jack Pepper can wall-run, use a grapple hook and double-jump. Those abilities change how an arena is read: a route over a wall, a rapid swing to a new position or a second jump can be as important as the gun in your hand. They also make the game a poor match for anyone seeking a purely corridor-based shooter with no return trips.
A detective story between firefights
Jack Pepper is a private investigator in Mouseburg. The case involves corruption, kidnapping and murder, and the campaign alternates between violent encounters and quieter investigation. A hub provides conversations and detective interludes; clue-board work gives the story a physical way to connect evidence and suspects. There is also a baseball-card side activity, which adds a collectible pursuit outside the central case.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →PC Gamer characterizes the level structure as metroidvania-like: later traversal abilities open routes in earlier areas, encouraging you to return to places you have already visited. That backtracking is not an incidental detour. It links the movement system to exploration and gives new abilities a purpose beyond surviving the next arena.
Bosses interrupt the rhythm on purpose
Boss fights break up the regular combat flow instead of serving as constant skill checks. That means the campaign has a deliberate rhythm: movement-heavy rooms, a quieter detective beat, exploration or clue work, then a larger confrontation. If you want every minute to be an uninterrupted arena gauntlet, the detective sections may feel like a pause. If you enjoy a shooter that gives its action a case to investigate, they are central to the appeal.

Current release and reception context
Steam lists Fumi Games as the developer, PlaySide as the publisher and April 16, 2026 as the release date. At crawl time in 2026, Steam displayed 9,338 English reviews with 93% positive. That percentage and review count are snapshots and can change as more players review the game; they should not be treated as a permanent score.
1. Fallen Aces: The A.C.E.S. — the closest noir-investigator match
Pick Fallen Aces when the private-eye premise matters as much as the gunplay. The official MOUSE community description presents it as a crime-noir FPS starring former heavyweight boxer and private investigator Michael “Mike” Thane. It is told in a comic-book style across three episodes. That combination gives it the strongest thematic overlap with MOUSE: a hard-boiled investigation, a protagonist who works as a detective and a deliberately illustrated presentation.
Why it feels like a natural next step
- Both games put investigation at the center of the fantasy. You are not an anonymous soldier clearing unrelated rooms; you are following a criminal story through a named investigator.
- Both use stylized art instead of realistic military presentation. MOUSE draws on 1930s rubber-hose animation, while Fallen Aces uses comic-book presentation.
- Both frame first-person action through noir. The tone is crime fiction rather than science-fiction military spectacle.
- Fallen Aces is structured as a larger narrative. Its cited description identifies three episodes, giving the story an explicitly episodic shape.
Where the comparison stops
Fallen Aces is not a mechanical duplicate of MOUSE. The available description establishes the detective and comic-book overlap, but not the same wall-running, grapple hook or double-jump kit. MOUSE also has a specific blend of clue-board investigation, hub conversations and a baseball-card side activity; those elements should not be assumed to exist in Fallen Aces.
The visual similarity is likewise a matter of approach, not identical rendering. MOUSE is defined by black-and-white, hand-drawn rubber-hose animation inspired by 1930s cartoons. Fallen Aces is described as comic-book styled. If your priority is the exact animation language, you may prefer MOUSE even when Fallen Aces is the better noir recommendation.
Who should choose Fallen Aces?
- Choose it if the words private investigator and crime noir are the reason you noticed MOUSE.
- Choose it if an illustrated, authored setting matters more than matching every traversal ability.
- Choose it if you want a story presented in multiple episodes rather than a single case structure.
- Stay with MOUSE if wall-running, grappling, double-jumping and the return-to-earlier-levels progression are your main reasons for playing.
2. Forgive Me Father 2 — the closest illustrated boomer-shooter match
Pick Forgive Me Father 2 when the part of MOUSE you want to preserve is the retro-FPS loop: rapid movement, large groups of enemies, a broad arsenal and strongly illustrated visuals. The official MOUSE community description calls it a hand-drawn, comic-like old-school FPS with hordes of enemies, an arsenal of weapons and supernatural abilities.

Why it belongs on this list
- It shares the hand-drawn priority. Both games make illustrated art a defining feature rather than a minor skin over conventional shooter assets.
- It speaks directly to retro-FPS players. Its description emphasizes old-school FPS combat and hordes, which aligns with the fast, pressure-heavy side of MOUSE.
- It offers more than firearms alone. Supernatural abilities provide another layer of combat choices, much as MOUSE uses alternate fire, environmental attacks and movement to expand its basic shooting.
- It is a better fit for action-first sessions. If you want to spend most of your time fighting rather than examining clues or talking in a hub, its stated emphasis points in that direction.
What you give up compared with MOUSE
Forgive Me Father 2 is not presented as a detective game. Its cited description emphasizes supernatural abilities and enemy hordes, not a private investigator, a clue board or a noir conspiracy. MOUSE’s story includes corruption, kidnapping and murder in Mouseburg; those case-driven elements are the reason to choose MOUSE instead when narrative investigation is the priority.
The art connection is also broad rather than exact. Both are hand-drawn or comic-like, but MOUSE specifically imitates black-and-white 1930s rubber-hose animation. Forgive Me Father 2 is described as dark and illustrated in a comic-like manner, so its mood and visual vocabulary should not be treated as interchangeable with MOUSE’s cartoon world.
Who should choose Forgive Me Father 2?
- Choose it if you want hordes and constant old-school shooting with minimal emphasis on detective downtime.
- Choose it if supernatural abilities sound more appealing than a private-eye toolkit.
- Choose it if illustrated visuals matter, but the exact 1930s cartoon influence does not.
- Stay with MOUSE if you want traversal abilities, clue-board work, hub conversations and a case that unfolds through investigation.

Choose by your preferred play rhythm
If you want to shoot almost continuously
Start with Forgive Me Father 2. Its stated emphasis is hordes, an arsenal and supernatural abilities, so it most directly serves an action-first session. MOUSE still delivers rapid combat, but its hub conversations, clue-board work and exploration returns intentionally create pauses.
If you want a case to follow
Start with Fallen Aces. Its protagonist is explicitly a private investigator and its setting is crime noir. MOUSE remains the stronger choice if you also want the investigation represented through clue-board work and a hub, because those systems are part of its described campaign structure.
If movement tech is the deciding factor
Stay with MOUSE. Wall-running, a grapple hook and double-jumping are confirmed parts of its design, and PC Gamer links the traversal abilities to returns through earlier levels. The available descriptions for the two recommendations do not establish equivalent movement kits.

If visual style is the deciding factor
Decide which kind of illustration you want. MOUSE is specifically black-and-white rubber-hose animation inspired by 1930s cartoons. Fallen Aces uses comic-book styling. Forgive Me Father 2 is hand-drawn and comic-like, with a darker illustrated emphasis. They overlap in rejecting realism, but they are not the same aesthetic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to expect when moving from MOUSE to another game
Expect a change in the balance between story and combat
MOUSE does not treat narrative as a cutscene wrapper around arenas. Its detective interludes, conversations and clue-board work are part of the campaign’s rhythm. Forgive Me Father 2 is the safer choice when you want the action emphasis to remain dominant; Fallen Aces is the safer choice when you want the crime-story emphasis to remain visible.
Do not assume every traversal ability transfers
The temptation is to see any retro-FPS recommendation and expect the same movement sandbox. In MOUSE, wall-running, grappling and double-jumping influence both combat and exploration. The cited descriptions for Fallen Aces and Forgive Me Father 2 establish their themes and broad shooter identities, but do not promise those same abilities. Treat movement as a MOUSE-specific feature unless a game’s own documentation says otherwise.
Expect the art to rhyme, not match
All three games use stylization to create identity, but the references differ. MOUSE’s black-and-white rubber-hose look is tied to 1930s cartoons. Fallen Aces uses comic-book presentation, while Forgive Me Father 2 uses hand-drawn comic-like imagery. If you are choosing by screenshots, identify whether you want rubber-hose animation, a crime comic or darker illustrated action rather than treating them as one visual category.
A practical decision guide
- Start with your non-negotiable. If it is detective noir, select Fallen Aces. If it is hordes and supernatural combat, select Forgive Me Father 2. If it is traversal plus detective structure, select MOUSE.
- Check your tolerance for downtime. MOUSE includes hub conversations, clue-board work and a side activity; choose the other recommendations if you want less emphasis on those systems.
- Check your visual preference. Pick MOUSE for black-and-white 1930s cartoon influence, Fallen Aces for comic-book crime, or Forgive Me Father 2 for hand-drawn comic-like darkness.
- Use movement as the tie-breaker. MOUSE is the only title here with the cited combination of wall-running, a grapple hook and double-jumping.
- Reassess after the first session. If you miss the investigation, move toward Fallen Aces; if you miss uninterrupted action, move toward Forgive Me Father 2. If neither compromise feels right, MOUSE’s hybrid design is the feature you were looking for.
Common questions before choosing
Is Fallen Aces the closest game to MOUSE?
It is the closest of the two recommendations in detective and noir terms. Both center a private investigator in a stylized crime story, but their combat and presentation differ, and the available description does not establish MOUSE’s traversal abilities in Fallen Aces.

Is Forgive Me Father 2 a detective game?
Its cited description presents it as a hand-drawn, comic-like old-school FPS with hordes, weapons and supernatural abilities. It does not establish a private-investigator or clue-board structure, so choose it for retro-FPS action rather than detective fiction.
Does MOUSE have more than arena shooting?
Yes. Alongside fast combat, it has hub conversations, detective interludes, clue-board work, a baseball-card side activity and metroidvania-like returns to earlier levels after gaining traversal abilities.
What is the most important mechanical difference?
MOUSE’s confirmed movement set—wall-running, grappling and double-jumping—is integrated with both arena survival and exploration. The cited descriptions of the other games do not specify an equivalent traversal system.
