Start with Expeditions: A MudRunner Game if you want the closest realistic, tool-heavy exploration loop. Choose art of rally for Funselektor’s stylized driving and vintage cars, SnowRunner for enormous logistics campaigns, MudRunner for harsher winch-and-terrain management, Pacific Drive for atmospheric survival driving, or Lonely Mountains: Downhill for a bicycle-based wilderness alternative.
Over the Hill launched on October 14, 2026, as a slow, scenic off-road game about choosing your own route rather than beating a clock. The best substitute depends on which part of that formula matters most to you: peaceful wandering, realistic vehicle recovery, long-term progression, visual style, or a stronger sense of danger.

What makes Over the Hill distinctive
Steam lists Over the Hill as a driving, off-road, open-world and exploration game with controller support and online co-op. Funselektor Labs Inc. describes 4×4 vehicles from the 1960s through the 1980s traveling through Canadian wilderness. The regions progress from a forgiving valley to wetlands and steep mountains, while dynamic weather, day/night cycles and changing ground conditions alter how a vehicle handles.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
The intended rhythm is intentionally unhurried. A June 12, 2026 preview by PC Gamer emphasizes going slowly, considering a route and deciding how to reach a destination instead of chasing a time. Points of interest, cabins, challenge trails, photo mode and the ability to leave the obvious path give you reasons to explore without turning every drive into a race. Up to four drivers can play together online.
That design creates a particular kind of friction. You still have to read slopes, gaps, mud and weather, decide when a detour is safer, and recover when a route fails. The challenge comes from making a plan and adapting it, not from a countdown. As Funselektor founder Dune Casu wrote in Xbox Wire on January 23, 2026: “There’s no rush. No ticking clock. Just the open wilderness and the road (or lack of one) ahead.”
1. Expeditions: A MudRunner Game — the closest realistic exploration match
Expeditions is the strongest choice when the part you want to preserve is careful off-road decision-making. Released March 5, 2024, it casts you as the leader of scientific expeditions rather than a tourist. You drive all-terrain vehicles, deploy reconnaissance equipment, find hidden treasures and ruins, and maintain a camp and crew while moving through open regions from Arizona to the Carpathians.

- Route planning is supported by explicit tools and scouting, so a difficult crossing can be investigated before you commit a vehicle.
- The open maps reward looking beyond the immediate objective for discoveries and alternate approaches.
- Online co-op supports up to four players, matching Over the Hill’s group size.
What changes
The structure is more organized and systems-heavy. Missions, equipment choices, crew roles and camp management give every trip a stated purpose. You spend more time preparing an expedition and satisfying objectives than simply following an interesting ridge. If your ideal session is a quiet drive with no assignment, Over the Hill remains the lighter experience; if you enjoy turning exploration into a technical operation, Expeditions adds depth.

2. art of rally — Funselektor’s stylized driving alternative
Released September 23, 2020, art of rally shares Funselektor’s affection for period vehicles and graphic landscapes but changes the format completely. Its official page presents a stylized tribute to rally’s golden era, with colorful environments, vintage cars spanning the 1960s through Group B, 91 career stages, leaderboards, and photo and replay modes.
Why it fits
- The low-poly visual language, saturated scenery and classic-car focus make it the closest stylistic companion.
- Driving lines, braking points and weight transfer provide precise control for players who want to improve technique.
- Photo and replay tools let you linger on presentation even though the underlying events are competitive.
What changes
Stages replace open-ended wilderness. You are trying to complete a defined route quickly and cleanly, with leaderboards providing a clear performance target. There is no equivalent to Over the Hill’s free route selection, cabins or terrain-recovery loop. Pick it for Funselektor’s art direction and vintage motorsport feel, not for a relaxing 4×4 trek.
3. SnowRunner — the biggest logistics and progression commitment
SnowRunner, released May 17, 2021, turns off-road driving into a long logistics campaign. Its official listing focuses on powerful vehicles, extreme open environments, contracts, mud, water, snow, frozen lakes and terrain physics. You repair and expand a fleet that can reach 40 vehicles, fitting upgrades such as snorkels and chain tires for specific conditions. It supports solo play and online co-op.
Why it fits
- Terrain is the central problem: a load can be delayed by a muddy incline, deep water or a thawing route.
- Vehicle choice and upgrades create meaningful preparation decisions before every delivery.
- Large maps and extended campaigns provide far more progression than a short scenic outing.
What changes
The work is the point. Contracts, cargo, fuel, repairs and garage logistics make the game methodical, but they also add administrative overhead. A drive that would be a spontaneous viewpoint hunt in Over the Hill may become a multi-vehicle recovery operation here. Choose SnowRunner when completing a difficult haul feels satisfying; choose Over the Hill when sightseeing should stay central.

- GameSir Nexus App: The G7 Pro is compatible with the upgraded GameSir Nexus app, which brings a significant upgrade over the original. It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
4. MudRunner — stripped-back, demanding trail driving
Released October 30, 2017, MudRunner presents a more austere version of the same terrain-first philosophy. Steam describes Siberian landscapes navigated with only a map and compass, 19 all-terrain vehicles, dynamic day/night cycles, a winch, physics-reactive mud and rivers, delivery objectives and mod support. Co-op accommodates up to four players.
Why it fits
- The map-and-compass presentation leaves you responsible for orientation and route memory.
- Mud, rivers and vehicle weight create immediate recovery problems rather than cosmetic scenery.
- A winch can turn a failed crossing into a solvable extraction if you planned your approach.
What changes
MudRunner is less cozy and less forgiving. Deliveries give maps a practical purpose, and the minimal interface offers little reassurance when visibility or traction disappears. It is ideal for players who want to think about tire placement, momentum and recovery equipment; it is a poor fit if you want frictionless sightseeing or a gentle introduction to off-road games.
5. Pacific Drive — the atmospheric survival-driving branch
Pacific Drive launched February 21, 2024. Ironwood Studios’ official description places you in the first-person Olympic Exclusion Zone, where your station wagon is your only companion. Runs involve scavenging resources, investigating the zone and returning to a garage base to restore and upgrade the car.
Why it fits
- The vehicle is not merely transportation; its condition, parts and upgrades shape every expedition.
- Roadside discoveries and an unusual setting provide a strong reason to explore beyond the obvious path.
- The first-person perspective and sound design create an especially focused sense of place.
What changes
Survival systems and supernatural hazards create sustained pressure. Damage, resource management and the need to return to the garage make each outing consequential. There is no equivalent to Over the Hill’s calm, open-ended co-op driving: Pacific Drive is a solo experience built around tension, mystery and maintaining one fragile machine. Choose it when atmosphere matters more than relaxation.

- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
6. Lonely Mountains: Downhill — wilderness trails without cars
Released October 23, 2019, Lonely Mountains: Downhill trades four wheels for a bicycle. Its official page puts one player on forest trails, narrow paths and wild rivers, with jumps, slides and crash avoidance as the core skills.
Why it fits
- Natural route reading remains important: you look for safe lines, shortcuts and surfaces that preserve control.
- Low-poly scenery and quiet outdoor spaces deliver a clean wilderness mood.
- Short runs are easy to replay while you refine a descent or search for a better line.
What changes
This is a downhill challenge game, not vehicle exploration. Gravity supplies the momentum, crashes reset the attempt, and progression comes from mastering trails rather than equipping a 4×4 for a remote crossing. It is the best substitute when the outdoor setting and readable paths matter more than engines, cargo or co-op.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the alternatives differ on the key decision points
Pace and pressure
Over the Hill is the least objective-driven option: you can stop for a view, take a poor route, recover and continue. Expeditions, SnowRunner and MudRunner are still deliberate, but their missions and deliveries give each trip an external purpose. art of rally adds competitive timing, Pacific Drive adds survival danger, and Lonely Mountains compresses play into repeatable downhill attempts.
Terrain simulation and recovery
For hands-on recovery, MudRunner is the most uncompromising, with map-and-compass navigation, reactive mud and a winch. SnowRunner broadens the problem into fleet logistics and equipment selection. Expeditions adds reconnaissance tools that help you understand a route before committing. Over the Hill uses terrain, weather, gaps and changing handling to make route reading important without making every mistake a major campaign setback.

Exploration freedom
Over the Hill and Expeditions offer the clearest open-world discovery structure. SnowRunner has large environments, but contracts guide your movement. MudRunner gives you maps to solve rather than a sightseeing-first world. Pacific Drive delivers exploration through repeated runs and investigation, while the other two alternatives use fixed stages or trails.
Progression and commitment
Choose SnowRunner for the deepest fleet-and-upgrade commitment, Expeditions for crew, camp and equipment planning, and Pacific Drive for persistent car restoration. MudRunner is comparatively focused on solving the current map. art of rally tracks career stages and performance, Lonely Mountains rewards repeated trail mastery, and Over the Hill keeps progression subordinate to discovering places and routes.
Solo and group play
Over the Hill, Expeditions and MudRunner all support online groups of up to four. SnowRunner supports solo and online co-op, while Pacific Drive and Lonely Mountains: Downhill are solo games. The cited official page for art of rally lists leaderboards and replay/photo features but does not state co-op support.

Steam review snapshots
Storefront percentages change as new reviews arrive. The figures below are snapshots of English-language Steam reviews viewed on October 18, 2026, not permanent ratings.
| Game | Positive English reviews | Review count |
|---|---|---|
| Over the Hill | 94% | 1,400 |
| art of rally | 93% | 4,057 |
| SnowRunner | 88% | 19,347 |
| Expeditions: A MudRunner Game | 57% | 1,624 |
| MudRunner | 90% | 10,736 |
| Pacific Drive | 82% | 14,353 |
| Lonely Mountains: Downhill | 89% | 1,576 |
These numbers are useful as a rough signal of current player reception, but they do not measure the same experience. A lower percentage for Expeditions, for example, does not make it a poor match for someone specifically seeking equipment, missions and scientific route planning; it may simply reflect a different audience and set of expectations.
Controller and setup considerations
Steam lists controller support for Over the Hill and art of rally. A PC gaming controller is therefore a practical accessory for these games, especially when making small steering and throttle adjustments on uneven terrain or during precise rally stages. The cited listings do not establish a universal controller requirement or guarantee identical support across every platform, so check the store page for the edition you intend to play.
