If you want the familiar loop of finding creatures, training a team and battling, start with Coromon, Nexomon or Temtem. For a more unusual take, Cassette Beasts builds its battles around transforming and fusing with monsters. Other picks mix creature collecting with farming, card play or platforming rather than copying Pokémon’s structure.
This roundup reflects games and descriptions covered in 2024. Store listings, platform support and online services can change, so check the relevant store before buying.

For established series beyond the indie-focused picks, consider Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Complete Edition, Monster Hunter Stories or Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince. They recruit, raise or battle creatures, but each has its own story and combat structure.
The closest matches to the classic catch-and-battle loop
Coromon: a retro-style fit with adjustable challenge
Coromon is one of the most direct choices if you want a traditional monster-taming RPG. GameSpot’s 2024 guide and Nintendo’s official US listing both describe more than 100 creatures. Battles are turn-based, but a stamina system gives moves an extra resource constraint. Nintendo’s listing also describes customizable difficulty and built-in Randomizer and Nuzlocke modes, useful if you want a more demanding run or a replay with altered conditions. The developer statement reproduced on the listing calls it “our tribute to the classics of this RPG sub-genre.”

Nintendo’s US listing identifies a digital Switch edition and gives July 21, 2022 as its release date; it also says Switch gameplay is supported on Switch 2. A physical Switch edition was announced in 2024 through Limited Run Games, but its preorder period was April 19 to May 19, 2024, with shipping then estimated for September. Those dates are historical, not evidence of current stock.
Nexomon and Nexomon: Extinction: traditional alternatives, including mobile
Both Nexomon and Nexomon: Extinction center on catching creatures, exploring and battling, making them natural choices if you want a familiar monster-RPG structure. GameSpot’s January 2024 guide puts the series’ collectible roster at roughly 300 monsters and notes light resource gathering and crafting. Dexerto’s 2024 guide also identifies the games as mobile alternatives. Editions and current platform availability may differ, so check the listing for the specific game and device you intend to use.

- Use the plastic smashers to catch the card that matches the correct combination of head, body, and feet

Temtem: choose it for online play and PvP
Temtem takes the creature-collecting formula into a massively multiplayer RPG. Dexerto’s January 2024 guide describes turn-based battles against other players, elemental types, evolution and a large map; it lists 164 available Temtem. GameSpot likewise characterizes it as a creature-collecting MMO and notes its full release in September 2022. If competing or adventuring alongside other players is central to what you want, that online focus is its clearest distinction from a more solitary monster RPG.
Those descriptions and platform details are 2024 snapshots, not confirmation of today’s server status, supported platforms or store availability. Check the current platform store and service information before purchasing, particularly if online play is the reason you are choosing it.

Creature RPGs with a bigger mechanical twist
Cassette Beasts: record, transform and fuse
Cassette Beasts keeps turn-based monster battles and exploration but changes the relationship between the player and the creatures: you record monsters onto cassette tapes, then transform into their forms. During battle, forms can also be fused. Elemental chemistry and exploration abilities add further ways to use your recorded forms, while local and online multiplayer offer ways to play with others. It is best treated as an inventive monster RPG, not a straight Pokémon substitute.
Nintendo of Canada’s Switch listing gives May 25, 2023 as the release date and describes local and online play. Nintendo Life reported on May 31, 2024 that Super Rare Games’ physical Switch editions were due June 6 in standard and deluxe versions. The report said both included the “Pier of the Unknown” and “Cosplay Pack” DLC. The deluxe version added a clamshell box, hardcover art book, CD soundtrack, patch, stickers, manual and trading cards. That announcement does not establish current stock, price or availability from any particular retailer.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Complete Edition: team battles in a cyber-detective story
If you want a familiar creature-raising appeal attached to a more story-driven RPG, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Complete Edition is another option. GameSpot’s 2024 guide says the edition includes more than 300 Digimon and uses 3v3 turn-based combat within a cyber-detective story. Its team format and narrative setting make it a different proposition from a direct Pokémon-style journey.
Monster Hunter Stories and Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince
Monster Hunter Stories is a creature-raising RPG, but its battle structure differs from Pokémon. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is a creature-recruitment spin-off; GameSpot’s 2024 roundup highlights seasonal changes to exploration. These are worth considering if you already enjoy their broader series or want creature-focused play with a different battle or exploration rhythm.

Cozy and genre-blending alternatives
Ooblets: farming, friendships and dance battles
Ooblets pairs creature collecting with small-town life, farming and crafting. Instead of conventional fights, its dance battles use card-based actions. No Small Games also describes relationships with townsfolk and garden tasks. Pick it if you want a cozy life sim with creatures; skip it if what you are seeking is Pokémon’s standard battle loop.
Moonstone Island: island exploration and card combat
Moonstone Island brings together farming simulation, life-sim elements, creature capture and turn-based card-game mechanics. GameSpot’s 2024 guide describes more than 100 islands to discover. It suits players who want creature collecting as one part of a broader, multi-genre adventure, rather than a close imitation of Pokémon.
Monster Sanctuary: monsters in a side-scrolling adventure
Monster Sanctuary is the least direct match here for someone seeking Pokémon’s mechanics. GameSpot explicitly distinguishes it as a platforming action side-scroller: tamed monsters support both combat and traversal. Choose it for monster-team building combined with platforming exploration, not for a conventional turn-based creature RPG.
Check platform and edition details before buying
Availability can vary by edition, region and date. For example, Nintendo’s official listings document Switch editions of Coromon and Cassette Beasts, but that does not establish current availability on every platform or from every retailer. The 2024 physical-release announcements for those games describe past release plans, not whether a cartridge is still in stock. Confirm the current store listing for your platform, and for online-focused play such as Temtem, verify that the relevant services are operating.
