Subnautica: Below Zero is the closest game to Subnautica 2 because it keeps the series’ first-person alien-ocean exploration, habitat construction, crafting and survival structure. If you have not played the series, start with the original Subnautica. Choose Raft for cooperative ocean survival, No Man’s Sky for a vastly larger exploration sandbox with underwater bases, or The Planet Crafter for calmer crafting and terraforming on land.
Subnautica 2 itself is an Early Access underwater survival game on a new alien world. It supports solo play and co-op for up to four players, with custom base building, crafting tools and mysteries to investigate. The best alternative therefore depends on which part of that formula matters most to you: deep diving, story-led discovery, cooperative construction, scale or relaxed progression.

What Subnautica 2 actually offers
Unknown Worlds describes Subnautica 2 as “an underwater survival adventure set on an all-new alien world.” That setting is not Planet 4546B, the location used by the earlier games. The official help center specifically distinguishes the new game’s world from the previous setting, so returning players should expect a new environment rather than another chapter on the same planet.
Steam lists Subnautica 2 as an Early Access survival game with underwater exploration, horror, open-world, base-building and co-op tags. The official description identifies solo play and cooperative play for up to four people, plus custom base construction, craftable tools and hidden mysteries. Because it is in Early Access, features, balance and progression can change as development continues.

Those details define the comparison. A suitable alternative should provide at least some combination of first-person or close-up exploration, resource gathering, survival pressure, construction and a world that rewards going farther than the safe starting area. No other game matches every part of the formula, so the recommendations below are organized by the experience each one delivers best.

1. Subnautica: Below Zero — the closest direct match
Why it feels most like Subnautica 2
Below Zero preserves the identity that makes Subnautica 2 distinctive: you investigate an alien environment from an intimate first-person perspective, gather materials, craft tools, establish habitats and descend into increasingly dangerous spaces. The official series page presents it as a return to Planet 4546B in a freezing underwater adventure. Its setting combines icy regions above the waterline with underwater biomes, so the game remains ocean-centered without being visually uniform.
The progression is built around going deeper and learning what the world is hiding. That makes Below Zero the strongest recommendation for anyone whose priority is the feeling of preparing for another dive, extending a base and using new equipment to reach a previously inaccessible area. Its connection to the earlier game’s lore also gives returning players context that an unrelated survival title cannot provide.
Where it differs
Below Zero is not a substitute for Subnautica 2’s new-world premise. It returns to the established 4546B setting, while Subnautica 2 moves to an entirely different alien planet. The two games therefore share a design language but not the same location or story. Below Zero’s documented adventure also includes substantial surface and frozen environments, so a player wanting uninterrupted open-water exploration may prefer the original Subnautica.
Who should choose it
- Choose it if underwater exploration, habitat building and crafting matter more than a huge map.
- Choose it if you want the closest available continuation of the series’ lore and presentation.
- Choose it if the appeal of Subnautica 2 is the cycle of preparation, descent, discovery and expansion.
2. Subnautica — the essential starting point
What the original establishes
The original Subnautica remains the clearest reference for the series’ formula. Its official description centers on an alien underwater adventure in which you craft equipment, pilot submarines and explore coral reefs, volcanic areas and deep cave systems while trying to survive. The variety of environments gives the game a strong sense of vertical progression: the ocean is not one space but a sequence of distinct regions that become more demanding as you move away from safety.

Submarines are an important difference from most alternatives on this list. They turn exploration into more than swimming between points, letting you treat vehicles as tools for reaching, carrying and surviving in deeper zones. Habitat construction gives the collected resources a practical purpose, while the world’s mysteries provide a reason to keep exploring after the basic survival loop is familiar.
Why play it before Subnautica 2
If you have never played Subnautica, the original gives you the strongest baseline for understanding what the sequel is trying to expand. You learn how the series combines environmental storytelling with resource management and construction without having to interpret a new setting or an Early Access feature set. It is also the better choice for someone who wants the most concentrated alien-ocean experience rather than a game that divides its attention between many planets or a surface-based vehicle.

3. Raft — best for cooperative ocean survival
The shared survival loop
Raft shifts the fantasy from inhabiting an alien seabed to surviving on a floating platform. GamesRadar describes its core loop as expanding a raft, collecting resources drifting through the water, reaching islands and diving underwater for valuable supplies. That structure makes movement and construction inseparable: the raft is both your home and your vehicle, and every improvement changes how effectively you can gather, store and process materials.
The game is a strong alternative when the social side of Subnautica 2 matters most. Building a raft with other players gives everyone a visible role, whether that means collecting floating materials, extending the deck, preparing equipment or searching an island and its surrounding water. The ocean is always present, but the main viewpoint is the surface and the raft rather than a fully explorable alien seabed.
The trade-off versus Subnautica
Raft does not provide the same continuous underwater world. Islands break up the journey, and the raft itself is the central construction project. Underwater dives are important resource trips, but they are not equivalent to Subnautica’s biome-driven descent through reefs, volcanic zones and caves. Choose Raft for mobile, cooperative survival rather than for a concentrated underwater mystery.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Who should choose it
- Choose it when playing and building together is more important than a solo narrative.
- Choose it if you like a home that physically travels with you.
- Choose it if collecting resources from the surface, islands and short underwater excursions sounds better than maintaining a fixed deep-ocean habitat.
4. No Man’s Sky — best for enormous exploration and base variety
A much larger sandbox
No Man’s Sky is the broadest alternative here. GamesRadar characterizes it as less structured and much larger than Subnautica: players can explore an entire galaxy, pursue optional story objectives, build bases, play multiplayer and construct underwater bases. Its underwater features therefore sit inside a much wider game that also includes other planetary environments and space travel.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThat scale changes the reason to explore. Subnautica concentrates attention on one alien ocean and the mysteries embedded in it. No Man’s Sky offers a nearly opposite structure: a huge range of places, optional objectives and construction possibilities, with underwater bases as one expression of the broader building system. If you want to keep discovering new environments for a very long time, its scope is the decisive advantage.
What you give up
The larger sandbox is also less focused. No Man’s Sky is not designed around one continuous underwater survival narrative, and the game can feel more self-directed than Subnautica’s guided movement through biomes and discoveries. A player seeking the tension of preparing for a particular dive may find the galaxy’s freedom less concentrated. Conversely, someone who dislikes being funneled toward a single mystery may prefer having optional goals and many possible destinations.
Who should choose it
- Choose it if discovery across many worlds matters more than staying underwater.
- Choose it if you want both planetary and underwater base construction.
- Choose it if multiplayer, optional objectives and an open-ended sandbox are higher priorities than a tightly framed survival story.
5. The Planet Crafter — best for calm crafting and terraforming
The adjacent, non-underwater option
The Planet Crafter belongs on this list because it captures the resource-gathering, crafting and hostile-world transformation side of the Subnautica appeal. It is not an underwater game. Its setting is land-based, and its defining progression is changing an inhospitable planet through terraforming infrastructure rather than learning the secrets of an ocean.
That difference is important. The Planet Crafter should be treated as a mood and systems alternative, not as a replacement for diving. Its slower pace suits players who enjoy collecting materials, placing equipment and watching a world become more habitable over time. The satisfaction comes from visible environmental improvement instead of descending into a dangerous biome.

- Choose it if you want crafting and construction with less emphasis on underwater danger.
- Choose it if transforming a hostile environment is more appealing than following an ocean mystery.
- Choose it if you want a calmer alternative and are comfortable giving up the underwater setting.
How the five games differ on the features that matter
Underwater focus
Subnautica and Below Zero are the only two recommendations built fundamentally around ocean exploration. Raft uses the ocean as its travel space and includes underwater resource dives, but its main base is a floating raft. No Man’s Sky includes underwater regions and underwater bases within a galaxy of different environments. The Planet Crafter is entirely land-based in the comparison presented here.
Survival pressure
The Subnautica games put environmental survival at the center of the exploration loop: you prepare equipment, manage access to dangerous areas and use habitats and crafted tools to extend your reach. Raft applies survival to a mobile ocean settlement and the supplies needed to keep it growing. No Man’s Sky spreads survival and construction across many planetary contexts rather than concentrating them in one ocean. The Planet Crafter emphasizes the progression of making a hostile world more livable, so its pressure is deliberately calmer.
Building style
Subnautica and Below Zero use habitats as operational bases for underwater expeditions. Raft makes the base itself mobile and modular, so expansion directly affects travel and collection. No Man’s Sky offers the broadest range of places to build, including underwater sites, but construction is one part of a much larger sandbox. The Planet Crafter ties construction to terraforming infrastructure and environmental change.
Exploration structure
Subnautica’s structure is concentrated and layered: reefs, volcanic areas and deep caves support a mystery that unfolds as you reach new depths. Below Zero follows the same broad pattern while adding icy surface and underwater regions. Raft organizes exploration around travel between a raft and islands. No Man’s Sky is the least directed, with a galaxy to roam and optional story objectives. The Planet Crafter’s progression is measured by how the environment changes as your infrastructure expands.

Co-op expectations
Subnautica 2’s official feature set explicitly supports up to four players. The recommendations do not all have an equivalent, consistently documented mode in the supplied information. Before buying an alternative specifically for multiplayer, check its current store listing, supported platforms, player limit and whether cooperative play applies to the complete game or only particular activities. Do not assume that an underwater setting automatically means co-op.

Choose by the experience you want
For the closest overall replacement
Pick Below Zero. It is the only recommendation that keeps the series’ underwater-first perspective, habitat construction, crafting and connected lore in one package. Its frozen surface areas and return to 4546B are differences, but the underlying activity loop is the nearest match.
For the best introduction to the series
Pick the original Subnautica. It presents the core ideas in their most recognizable form: alien ocean biomes, submarines, deep caves, crafting and survival. It is the logical starting point if Subnautica 2 would be your first game in the series.
For a group that wants to build together
Pick Raft if your group enjoys a shared project that travels across the ocean. The raft creates a clear cooperative objective and the islands provide reasons to leave it, while underwater dives add another resource route without turning the whole map into a seabed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor maximum freedom and variety
Pick No Man’s Sky. It offers the largest exploration space and lets you build on planets and underwater, but you should accept that the experience is broader and less concentrated than Subnautica’s focused ocean mystery.
For a gentler crafting game
Pick The Planet Crafter. It is the right answer when gathering, building and improving a hostile world are more important than swimming, oxygen-style diving decisions or ocean horror. Treat it as a thematic alternative, not an underwater substitute.
A sensible play order
- Play Subnautica first if you are new to the series and want the clearest introduction to its exploration and construction language.
- Move to Below Zero when you want another first-person alien-ocean adventure with familiar systems and connected lore.
- Try Subnautica 2 when you specifically want its new alien world and official four-player co-op, remembering that it is an Early Access release and may continue to change.
- Choose Raft or No Man’s Sky based on whether your priority is cooperative raft survival or a much larger multi-environment sandbox.
- Choose The Planet Crafter when you want the crafting and transformation loop without an underwater setting.
Platform, edition and availability checks
The supplied information does not establish current prices, physical editions, regional availability or affiliate eligibility for any of these games. Store listings can differ by platform and country, and Early Access status can change as development progresses. Check the current platform page before purchase, especially if you need a particular multiplayer mode, controller support, save compatibility or a physical copy.
The official Subnautica website also states that the series has sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. That is a publisher-reported figure, and the page does not display a publication date, so it should be treated as an undated series total rather than a current sales report.
Recommended Free Tools
Bottom line
Below Zero is the best answer to “What game is most like Subnautica 2?” because it preserves the underwater survival, habitat-building and crafting identity. The original Subnautica is the essential starting point; Raft is the cooperative ocean option; No Man’s Sky is the choice for scale and underwater bases inside a much larger galaxy; and The Planet Crafter is the calmer, land-based terraforming alternative. Decide which part of the Subnautica 2 fantasy you want to keep, then choose the game that makes that element its center rather than expecting any one alternative to reproduce the entire formula.
