Factorio is the best first recommendation if what you liked about Substructure was planning production chains, balancing throughput and solving logistics problems. Choose Satisfactory for a first-person 3D factory, Dyson Sphere Program for planet-to-planet expansion, shapez 2 for a clean optimization sandbox, Techtonica for underground exploration and co-op, or Mindustry when combat should be part of the automation challenge.

Substructure is described as a multiplayer automation game inspired by Factorio’s Ultracube mod. Players arrive on a rogue planet, extract nearby resources and build increasingly complex automation across a planet-scale setting. The recommendations below therefore focus on the parts that make that premise distinctive: logistics depth, spatial constraints, scale, exploration, co-op and pressure from survival or combat systems.

Quick guide: which Substructure alternative fits you?

Game Viewpoint and building feel Logistics focus World scale Exploration Co-op Combat or survival pressure Best match for
Factorio Top-down 2D Very deep production chains, routing and throughput optimization Factory-centered Secondary to logistics Not the defining comparison point here Not the reason to choose it Players who want the closest pure logistics challenge
Satisfactory First-person 3D Large, increasingly complex automated production One large explorable world Strong environmental and construction perspective Not the defining comparison point here Less central than construction and production Players who want to walk through a factory
Dyson Sphere Program Factory-building with planetary expansion Logistics that grow from local lines to interplanetary networks Planetary and interplanetary Expansion across worlds is central Not the defining comparison point here Not the central appeal Players attracted to astronomical scale
shapez 2 Abstract, layout-focused construction High-throughput arrangement of belts, platforms, pipes and trains Large-scale puzzle space Minimal Not the defining comparison point here No enemy destruction or survival burden in the described appeal Players who want uninterrupted optimization
Techtonica First-person underground 3D Mining, processing and factory expansion Underground spaces Strong exploration component Co-op is part of the appeal Survival pressure is not the defining comparison point here Players who want exploration alongside automation
Mindustry Automation with real-time strategy and tower defense Production lines must support defensive planning Scenario and base-oriented Secondary to strategic pressure Not the defining comparison point here Combat and attacks shape factory decisions Players who want factories under threat

Use the table as a starting point, then read the individual sections for the trade-offs. The closest game depends less on camera angle than on what you want the factory to make you think about: pure flow, physical construction, planetary expansion, abstract layouts, underground space or defense.

What makes Substructure distinctive?

The useful comparison is not simply “another game with belts.” Substructure combines multiplayer automation with a rogue-planet setting and a progression from nearby resource extraction to increasingly complex, planet-scale systems. Its reported inspiration, Factorio’s Ultracube mod, points toward production-chain reasoning, while the setting adds questions about space, exploration and pressure.

That combination creates six practical comparison tests:

  • Logistics depth: How many linked production decisions must you balance, and how much does routing matter?
  • Spatial constraints: Are you solving a clean abstract layout, a top-down grid, a three-dimensional construction problem or a confined underground site?
  • Scale: Does the factory remain local, fill one world or expand between planets?
  • Exploration: Is discovering the environment part of progression, or is the world mainly a canvas for optimization?
  • Co-op: Does playing with others materially shape the recommendation?
  • Pressure: Are survival systems, enemies or tower-defense objectives competing with your production priorities?

The six games below cover those combinations without pretending that one of them reproduces every part of Substructure. Pick the section whose priority matches yours, rather than looking for a single universal substitute.

Factorio: the strongest choice for deep logistics

Why it is the closest mechanical fit

Factorio is the clearest recommendation when your favorite part of Substructure is designing production chains and keeping a growing factory in balance. Its top-down 2D presentation puts attention on flow: where materials enter, how intermediate products are staged and whether each line can sustain the next one. The challenge is not merely placing machines; it is making the entire network work as a system.

That makes it especially suitable for players who enjoyed the Ultracube-inspired side of Substructure. You can approach each new production requirement as a logistics problem, then revise the layout when a bottleneck appears. The satisfaction comes from turning a fragile chain into an automated process that remains stable as demand increases.

What you give up compared with Substructure

Factorio is a focused factory-optimization choice. If the rogue-planet setting, first-person presence or multiplayer identity of Substructure is what drew you in, this recommendation addresses only part of that appeal. Its strength is the production puzzle itself, not an attempt to reproduce every environmental or survival layer.

Choose Factorio when

  • You want the deepest emphasis on production chains, routing and throughput.
  • You prefer a readable top-down 2D view over physically walking through machinery.
  • You are happy to treat exploration and combat as secondary to factory design.
  • You want a foundation for comparing the rest of the automation genre.

If your answer to “What should I play after Substructure?” is “the part with the most complicated logistics,” start here.

Satisfactory: a first-person factory you can inhabit

Why the viewpoint changes the experience

Satisfactory translates factory automation into first-person 3D construction. Instead of inspecting the whole operation from above, you move through the space you are building. Conveyors, machines and supporting structures become part of a physical environment, so placement and scale are experienced from the factory floor.

Its progression uses technology tiers and increasingly complex parts. Later stages demand quantities that make automation necessary rather than optional. That escalation gives the game a clear answer to the question “Why expand this line?” New tiers require the factory to produce more, connect more processes and occupy more of the available construction space.

Where it overlaps with Substructure

Both games suit players who want automation to occupy a large physical setting rather than remain a small puzzle board. The attraction is watching a resource operation become an organized industrial site. Satisfactory is therefore a good bridge for a Substructure player who values scale and construction but wants a camera that places them inside the machinery.

Where it differs

The first-person format shifts the main difficulty toward building in three dimensions and understanding the factory from ground level. It is not the best answer if your priority is the most abstract, mathematically tidy logistics puzzle. Conversely, it is the better answer if layout decisions are more exciting when you can walk around, inspect and physically expand them.

Choose Satisfactory when

  • You want a 3D factory rather than a top-down logistics diagram.
  • Technology tiers and larger part requirements are the progression you are looking for.
  • You enjoy making the factory itself a place to navigate.
  • You want an alternative that preserves industrial expansion without making combat the central theme.

Dyson Sphere Program: take logistics from one world to many

Why scale is the selling point

Dyson Sphere Program is the recommendation for players who keep asking what happens after a local factory is full. Its defining comparison is the move from production on one planet toward logistics that connect multiple planets, with an astronomical end goal framing the expansion.

This changes the planning question. In a local factory, you balance nearby inputs and outputs. At planetary and interplanetary scale, you must think about how separate industrial sites contribute to one larger system. The appeal is not just a bigger map; it is the feeling that the logistics network has become a civilization-scale project.

How it compares with Substructure

Substructure uses a planet-scale setting as part of its identity. Dyson Sphere Program pushes that idea further by making planet-to-planet logistics the reason to expand. If the phrase “planet-scale automation” is what caught your attention, this is the most direct escalation in the list.

What to expect from the trade-off

The wider scope can make each individual production area feel like one component of a much larger plan. Choose it when that overview is exciting. If you prefer to perfect a single compact layout or want constant environmental discovery, a different recommendation will fit better.

Choose Dyson Sphere Program when

  • You want logistics to expand beyond a single local factory.
  • Planet-to-planet connections are more appealing than a self-contained base.
  • You enjoy an astronomical end goal that gives the production network a sense of purpose.
  • You want the largest-scale answer to the question “How far can this factory grow?”

shapez 2: pure optimization without survival distractions

A cleaner automation puzzle

shapez 2 strips the genre toward arrangement and throughput. Its appeal is the abstract production problem: place and connect belts, platforms, pipes and trains so that shapes move through the system at the required rate. The presentation keeps attention on layout decisions rather than on a character, a hostile environment or the cost of defending structures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Substructure player, this is the option to choose when the factory itself is the fun. You can focus on geometry, routing and high-throughput organization without letting enemies destroy structures or survival concerns dominate construction. The large-scale puzzle space supports iteration: a line can be rebuilt because the layout is wrong, not because an outside threat interrupted it.

How it differs from the rogue-planet fantasy

The same abstraction that makes shapez 2 relaxing for optimization-minded players also removes much of the environmental identity associated with Substructure. Exploration is minimal in the comparison that matters here, and there is no described enemy pressure competing with the logistics problem. If you want to feel stranded, discover a world or defend a base, this is intentionally the wrong direction.

Choose shapez 2 when

  • You want belts, platforms, pipes and trains treated as a pure layout challenge.
  • You prefer uninterrupted optimization to survival or combat systems.
  • You enjoy high-throughput planning more than character-driven exploration.
  • You want the cleanest test of whether a production network is arranged efficiently.

Techtonica: underground exploration with factories and co-op

Why the setting matters

Techtonica combines first-person factory building with underground exploration, research and co-op. The underground environment changes the spatial feel of automation: expansion happens through confined spaces rather than across an open industrial landscape, and discovering those spaces is part of the experience.

Its factory loop still includes mining, processing and expansion, so the industrial progression remains recognizable to anyone coming from Substructure. The difference is that the route between resource extraction and production is wrapped in exploration. You are not only asking how to connect machines; you are also deciding where the next useful space and material source might be.

Why co-op players should consider it

Co-op is one of the explicit reasons to choose Techtonica. If the multiplayer side of Substructure is essential, this recommendation preserves a shared first-person building experience while moving the setting underground. Research gives the group another organizing thread beyond simply adding more machines.

Trade-offs

The confined environment may appeal to players who like spatial constraints, but it is less suited to someone seeking a completely abstract optimization board or a planet-to-planet logistics network. Its identity sits between factory construction and exploration, not at either extreme.

Choose Techtonica when

  • You want first-person building in underground spaces.
  • Exploration and research should sit beside mining and processing.
  • You want co-op to be part of the core appeal.
  • You prefer environmental constraints to a purely open-ended layout.

Mindustry: automation when the factory is under attack

Factories that support defense

Mindustry combines factory management with real-time strategy and tower defense. Production is not an isolated optimization exercise: the lines you build must support defensive planning, and combat decisions influence what the factory needs to do next.

  • Lightweight and Portable: Weighing only 34.2g, it’s easy to carry and lets you enjoy a professional-grade gaming experience anytime, anywhere.

That makes it the most pressure-heavy recommendation in this list. A belt or processing chain is valuable not only because it improves throughput, but because it helps sustain defenses and the strategic plan. The result is a different kind of bottleneck: an efficient line can still fail if it does not support the immediate defensive requirement.

How it compares with Substructure

If you enjoyed the idea of building automation in a dangerous setting, Mindustry gives that pressure a clear mechanical role. It is less suitable if you want a peaceful logistics sandbox where nothing interrupts construction. The factory must be designed with the possibility of attack and strategic change in mind.

Choose Mindustry when

  • You want combat to be part of factory planning rather than a separate activity.
  • Real-time strategy and tower defense are welcome additions to production management.
  • You enjoy making resource lines serve an immediate defensive objective.
  • You would find a no-pressure optimization game too passive.

Compare the six games by the decision that matters to you

If logistics depth is your top priority

Start with Factorio. It keeps the spotlight on production chains, routing and throughput. Choose shapez 2 instead when you want those concerns presented as an abstract, high-throughput layout puzzle without environmental or survival distractions.

If you want to be inside the factory

Satisfactory is the broad first-person 3D choice, while Techtonica supplies a more constrained underground setting and makes exploration and co-op central to the pitch. The distinction is not simply visual: the environment changes how you think about expansion.

If the world should keep getting bigger

Dyson Sphere Program is the clear choice for planetary and interplanetary logistics. It treats expansion between worlds as the defining scale jump, rather than merely giving you more room around one base.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If danger should shape production

Mindustry is the only recommendation here whose identity is built around real-time strategy and tower defense. Pick it when defending the factory is part of the satisfaction. If enemies would only interrupt your layouts, choose Factorio or shapez 2 instead.

If playing with others is essential

Techtonica is the strongest explicitly co-op-oriented recommendation in this set. Its combination of shared first-person construction, underground exploration and research gives a group more to coordinate than simply dividing machine placement.

A practical decision path

  1. Identify your camera preference. Choose top-down 2D for Factorio, first-person 3D for Satisfactory or Techtonica, and an abstract layout view for shapez 2.
  2. Decide whether scale means “more factory” or “more worlds.” For a growing operation in one setting, consider Satisfactory. For planetary and interplanetary logistics, choose Dyson Sphere Program.
  3. Decide whether exploration is a requirement. Favor Techtonica for underground discovery, or Satisfactory for a first-person construction environment. Favor Factorio or shapez 2 when exploration is secondary.
  4. Set your tolerance for interruption. Choose shapez 2 for the cleanest optimization, Factorio for logistics-first play, or Mindustry if attacks and defense should alter your priorities.
  5. Check the multiplayer need. If co-op is a deciding factor, put Techtonica at the top of the shortlist; do not assume that every automation game offers the same shared experience simply because it has factories.

Which game should you play after Substructure?

For most players, the answer is Factorio because it best preserves the demanding logistics core: production chains must be designed, balanced and expanded rather than merely assembled. It is the safest starting point when “like Substructure” means “give me another serious automation problem.”

Choose Satisfactory if the thing you want to preserve is the sense of occupying a large industrial site. Choose Dyson Sphere Program if the attraction is planet-scale growth that eventually becomes interplanetary. Choose shapez 2 if you want to remove survival and combat so every decision serves throughput. Choose Techtonica if underground exploration and co-op are as important as the factory. Choose Mindustry if the best factory is the one that can keep a defense network supplied while the situation changes in real time.

These are different answers to the same question: which part of Substructure do you want more of? Selecting that priority first will lead you to a better match than choosing solely by genre label.
