If you want the same crowd-survival and build-making appeal as Vampire Survivors, start with 20 Minutes Till Dawn for hands-on aiming or Brotato for short waves and local co-op. Both pair escalating combat with run-by-run upgrades, but they change the rhythm and controls in useful ways.
Which game should you try first?
- Choose 20 Minutes Till Dawn if you want a horde-survival roguelite where you actively aim and fire while assembling an upgrade build.
- Choose Brotato if you prefer brief, distinct waves, a shop between rounds, and the option to play local co-op with up to four players.
20 Minutes Till Dawn: hands-on horde survival
20 Minutes Till Dawn keeps the core appeal of surviving crowds and choosing upgrades, but asks you to aim directionally and fire actively. That makes combat more hands-on than the auto-attacking approach associated with Vampire Survivors. Its Nintendo Switch description frames the challenge around surviving for 20 minutes, gaining experience, and building through weapons, runes, and abilities. Nintendo says runs are designed for 10–20 minute play sessions. Nintendo lists the game for Switch, with a release date of December 21, 2023; the listing also says it is supported on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Switch.
On PC, Steam lists the release date as June 8, 2023. Its store description says Souls and Runes provide progression across runs, alongside unlockable characters and weapons, and lists more than 50 possible upgrades during a run. Steam lists Windows and macOS system requirements.
Brotato: short waves, shop decisions, and couch co-op
Brotato is a top-down arena shooter roguelite that breaks survival into discrete rounds. Its Steam description says runs take under 30 minutes and waves last 20–90 seconds. You collect experience and materials, then spend between-wave visits to the shop on items and weapons. Weapons fire automatically by default, but manual aiming is available, so it can suit players who want a choice about how much direct aiming to do.

Its clearest differentiator is group play: Steam lists local co-op for up to four players. The listing also notes settings that let players tune enemy health, damage, and speed. These features make Brotato a strong fit if the between-wave shopping and adjustable challenge matter as much as surviving the crowd.
