The strongest games of 1986 span nonlinear console adventures, atmospheric action, arcade racing, puzzle play and role-playing. This is an editorial shortlist—not an official all-platform ranking—selected for lasting influence, documented contemporary reception, genre range and platform diversity. Release years can refer to a debut in one country or a later version elsewhere, so the entries below identify that context where it is established.

Eight standout games from 1986

The picks are grouped by their contribution to the year rather than ordered as a definitive ranking. A release listed for 1986 in a catalog or retrospective is not necessarily a worldwide debut on every platform.

The Legend of Zelda

Nintendo’s action-adventure is the clearest choice for a list centered on exploration and lasting influence. It is also prominent in retrospective coverage of 1986. Acclaimed Video Games records it on 30 collected lists in its 1980s dataset; that is later list recognition, not an award from 1986, a sales figure or a review score. GamesRadar’s retrospective makes the case for the year’s console experimentation, while the Acclaimed Video Games 1980s list provides the scoped aggregation.

Metroid

For players drawn to exploration, Metroid is a natural companion to Zelda. GamesRadar describes it as a nonlinear adventure and discusses it alongside Zelda and Castlevania as part of the year’s console innovation. Its place here broadens the list beyond a single adventure formula.

Castlevania

Castlevania adds a more atmospheric action-platforming style to the console group. GamesRadar’s retrospective pairs it with Zelda and Metroid, making it a strong choice for a shortlist that values distinct tone as well as influence.

Out Run

Out Run offers a change of pace: a recognizable arcade racing game rather than another console adventure. GamesRadar names it among Sega’s prominent games of the year, making it a useful representative of the arcade side of 1986.

Bubble Bobble

This character-based arcade platform game brings a playful, stage-focused style to the selection. It appears in the Museum of the Game’s 1986 index and in GamesRadar’s retrospective. That combination supports including it as a notable arcade pick, not as proof of a universal ranking.

Arkanoid

Arkanoid is the list’s paddle-and-ball option, distinct from both Bubble Bobble and the action adventures. It is named by GamesRadar and indexed among the Museum of the Game’s 1986 entries, adding a different kind of short-session arcade play.

Dragon Quest

Enix’s role-playing game brings a genre and Japanese market context that the arcade and action-platform entries do not cover. GamesRadar identifies it among the year’s important games. It earns a place here for widening the shortlist’s range, not because the available sources establish a single cross-platform verdict.

Rampage

Rampage broadens the selection with arcade action and a pick beyond the most frequently cited Japanese console franchises. The Museum of the Game’s 1986 catalog includes it; that catalog entry establishes its presence in the index, not a quality score.

What “1986” means for these games

Games from this year did not all arrive in the same country or on the same machine. A debut year, a regional launch and a later port are different milestones. The available retrospective and catalog records support this shortlist, but they do not establish a single worldwide release date for every title and version.

One useful example of the regional distinction is Super Mario Bros.: it had already been released in Japan before 1986, while its North American NES period provides relevant context for the year. GamesRadar reproduces this assessment from a June 1986 Computer Entertainer review: “The graphics are cute and comical, the music lively, but it’s the great depth of play action that keeps you playing again and again. No owner of the Nintendo Entertainment System should be without this game – it’s a must!” The excerpt is contemporary evidence of enthusiasm for the NES game, not evidence that it first debuted worldwide in 1986. GamesRadar reproduces the review passage; the cited report does not name an individual reviewer.

The wider 1986 gaming landscape

Nintendo’s official history records two geographically distinct developments in 1986: the NES launched in Europe, and Nintendo began selling the Family Computer Disk Drive System in Japan, alongside the Disk Writer service there. These events help explain why a year’s gaming history cannot be reduced to one console launch or one market. Nintendo’s corporate history is the source for its own hardware timeline.

The International Arcade Museum’s Museum of the Game 1986 index reports 223 entries. That is the index’s count, accessed in 2026—not a tally of every game released worldwide and not a measure of quality. The 1986 arcade index illustrates the breadth of the arcade catalog beyond the handful of titles on this shortlist.

How to read this shortlist

  • Influence and retrospective standing: The Legend of Zelda, Metroid and Castlevania represent the console adventure and action-platform side emphasized in retrospective coverage.
  • Genre variety: Out Run, Bubble Bobble, Arkanoid, Dragon Quest and Rampage add racing, arcade platforming, paddle-and-ball play, role-playing and arcade action.
  • Evidence has different limits: Nintendo’s corporate history documents Nintendo’s own hardware timeline; the Museum of the Game indexes arcade entries; GamesRadar offers an editorial retrospective; and Acclaimed Video Games aggregates later list appearances. None constitutes a formal all-platform award.

Further reading for NES games

For readers who want to explore the NES entries beyond this year, Pen and Sword Books lists The NES Encyclopedia, a hardback covering officially licensed and unlicensed NES games and specifically including The Legend of Zelda and Metroid. It is an NES reference, not a guide to every platform represented here. The NES Encyclopedia.
