For contemporary Japan and supernatural social role-playing, start with Persona 5 Royal; for an open-world samurai story on Tsushima during the Mongol invasion, choose Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut; and for Bakumatsu-era Kyoto and Tosa with action-focused combat, consider Like a Dragon: Ishin!. They offer markedly different, stylized takes on Japan rather than one definitive picture.

Best for modern Japan and supernatural role-playing: Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 Royal is the fit if you want a contemporary setting rather than a historical samurai story. ATLUS describes the Persona series as set in modern-day Japan, blending ordinary life—including friendships and romance—with supernatural and paranormal themes. That contrast is central to the appeal: the setting is recognizably modern, but the story also moves into the fantastic.
ATLUS lists physical standard and collector’s editions and the platforms shown in the comparison table. Because edition, language and availability can vary by market, confirm the details for the version you intend to purchase on the official Persona 5 Royal page.

Best for open-world samurai action: Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut
Set on Tsushima during the late-13th-century Mongol invasion, the game follows Jin Sakai as he fights to protect the island. PlayStation describes it as an open-world exploration of medieval Japan, with a choice between conventional samurai combat and stealthier tactics. The Director’s Cut adds the Iki Island story expansion and Legends online cooperative mode; check the PlayStation Japan page for the current edition and upgrade information relevant to your console and copy.
The game received the Games of the Year Grand Award at the Japan Game Awards in 2021. CESA described it as “an open world historical action-adventure game dealing with the Mongol invasion of Japan” and noted that it was the first development team outside Japan to receive the Grand Award. That is a specific award recognition, not an objective ranking of the best Japan-set games. See CESA’s October 6, 2021 release.
Rank #2
Best for Bakumatsu-era action: Like a Dragon: Ishin!
Like a Dragon: Ishin! takes Ryoma’s story to Kyoto and Tosa during the Bakumatsu period. SEGA classifies it as an action-adventure and lists four combat styles: sword, gun, sword-and-gun, and bare-handed fighting. It’s a strong choice if you want a period setting and a range of direct combat styles rather than the open-world exploration of Ghost of Tsushima.
SEGA’s page states a February 22, 2023 release date and lists the platforms in the comparison table; current regional availability may differ. Check the official Like a Dragon: Ishin! page for product details.
How to choose
- Choose Persona 5 Royal for present-day Japan, supernatural storytelling and a role-playing focus.
- Choose Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut for open-world exploration, a medieval island setting and a choice between direct combat and stealth.
- Choose Like a Dragon: Ishin! for Bakumatsu-era Kyoto and Tosa and four distinct combat styles.
These are different kinds of fictionalized Japan: a contemporary setting with fantasy, a stylized historical war adventure, and a Bakumatsu action-adventure. Pick by era, location and play style, then check that the edition is available for your platform.

A January 21, 2026 Metropolis Japan roundup also names Ghost of Yōtei, describing it as set in Hokkaido in 1603, and Silent Hill f, describing a horror story in 1960s rural Japan. It also mentions Persona, Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake.
