It is the closest continuation of The Two Towers’ film-based, character-led hack-and-slash action. If you want a current official Tolkien release instead, choose The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition on Nintendo Switch 2, listed by Nintendo UK for 18 August 2026. For the same kind of combat without Tolkien’s setting, Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone is the strongest substitute because it was made by Stormfront Studios, the developer behind The Two Towers, and later re-released on Steam.
A dedicated The Two Towers remaster has not been officially announced. Aspyr has teased more classic Middle-earth releases, but no confirmed title, date, platform or preorder exists for a remaster of this specific game.

What made The Two Towers hard to replace?
The 2002 game adaptation built its appeal around immediate, cinematic combat rather than a long role-playing system. Nintendo’s description highlights “non-stop, hold-your-breath combat” and gives the player control of three main protagonists. That combination creates a useful test for any follow-up: does a game deliver frequent melee encounters, let you embody recognizable heroes, and move with the momentum of a film?
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe answer is not simply “another Tolkien game.” Several Middle-earth releases change the genre, pace or protagonist. Some preserve heroic action; others replace sword fighting with stealth, traversal or domestic routines. The recommendations below therefore separate combat similarity, official Tolkien connection, modern platform access and tone instead of treating every licensed game as equivalent.

1. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King — the closest continuation
If your question is “what should I play after The Two Towers?” and you mean “what feels most like the next chapter?”, start here. The Return of the King keeps the film-based action-adventure structure and continues the heroic, character-driven approach rather than switching to stealth or simulation.
Why it matches
- It follows the same broad adaptation format: a game built around the movie trilogy rather than an unrelated Tolkien-era story.
- It preserves the emphasis on active combat and recognizable protagonists that defined The Two Towers.
- Nintendo specifically describes its environments as “totally interactive,” identifying a change from the earlier game’s presentation.
That environmental interactivity is the important distinction. The recommendation is not based only on shared branding; it is based on the same forward-driving action while giving the spaces more ways to participate in encounters. Expect the most familiar transition for someone who has just finished the remastered The Two Towers.
Who should choose it?
Choose The Return of the King if your priority order is combat first, film-trilogy continuity second and experimentation last. It is also the safest choice for a player who wants to control heroic characters instead of adopting a stealth-focused or civilian protagonist. The cited Nintendo material does not provide a complete current-edition feature list, so check the specific release you intend to play for supported systems and any multiplayer details.
2. The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition — the current official action option
War in the North – Legacy Edition is the clearest modern-platform recommendation in the available information. Nintendo lists it as an Action/Adventure game for Nintendo Switch 2, with a release date of 18 August 2026 in Nintendo UK’s listing.

Why it matters after The Two Towers
This is the choice for readers who want an official Tolkien game they can buy for a current Nintendo platform rather than revisit an older console release. Its positioning is still heroic action-adventure, so it belongs in the same broad family as The Two Towers and The Return of the King, even though it is not presented as a direct movie adaptation.
The word “current” needs a precise qualification: the date and platform above are the Nintendo UK listing’s details for the Legacy Edition. Availability, regional storefront listings and physical stock can differ. Confirm that the product is the Switch 2 edition you want before purchasing.
Who should choose it?
- Pick it for modern Nintendo access: it is the strongest Switch 2-specific recommendation identified here.
- Pick it for official Tolkien branding: unlike a non-Tolkien substitute, it remains within Middle-earth’s licensed game catalog.
- Do not assume a feature match: the cited official pages do not provide a complete, directly comparable co-op matrix. Verify the current edition’s feature list if shared play is decisive.
3. Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone — the combat-first alternative
If lore is optional but the feel of a fast fantasy brawler is not, try Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone. PC Gamer identifies Stormfront Studios as the creator of both this game and The Two Towers, making it the most defensible non-Tolkien recommendation on combat lineage rather than surface resemblance. SNEG later re-released Demon Stone on Steam, giving the game a current PC storefront presence.

What carries over from The Two Towers?
The connection is the developer’s approach to licensed action. You are looking for the same broad design instinct: a fantasy setting, direct melee encounters and a campaign built around action rather than a slow, systems-heavy role-playing structure. It does not reproduce Middle-earth characters or story, so treat it as a mechanical substitute, not a continuation.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Who should choose it?
Choose Demon Stone when “games like Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” means “another Stormfront-style hack-and-slash.” Choose something else if Tolkien locations, film actors or story continuity are the reason you are replaying The Two Towers. The verified modern access point is the Steam re-release; check the store page for the edition’s current operating-system requirements and included features before installing.
4. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum — stealth and traversal instead of swordplay
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is worth recommending only with an explicit warning about its different design. PlayStation describes it as a 2023 action-adventure centered on Gollum’s journey through locations including Barad-dûr and Mirkwood. Its defining activities are stealth and climbing, not the continuous heroic melee that makes The Two Towers distinctive.
What you gain
- A different protagonist: Gollum’s perspective changes the scale and purpose of each encounter.
- A different form of tension: avoiding danger and navigating vertical spaces replaces charging into groups of enemies.
- Recognizable Middle-earth locations: Barad-dûr and Mirkwood provide an official Tolkien setting even though the play style is unlike the film-based brawler.
Who should choose it?
Play Gollum if you want to remain in Middle-earth but are deliberately ready to leave hack-and-slash combat behind. It is a poor first recommendation for someone asking specifically for “the same combat,” but a useful second choice for readers who want a character and movement system the other picks do not offer. Platform and edition details are not fully summarized in the cited PlayStation description, so verify the version available on your system.
5. Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game — the cozy reset
Tales of the Shire answers “what should I play after The Two Towers?” by changing the question. Take-Two’s publisher announcement lists its launch on 25 March 2025 for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and Netflix Games. Its premise is Hobbit community life and cooking rather than battlefield combat.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Why the contrast is useful
After a campaign built around constant danger, a deliberately domestic game can provide a clean tonal break. The focus is not heroic progression through war zones; it is the routines and relationships of a Hobbit community. That makes it a Tolkien recommendation, but not a combat recommendation.
Who should choose it?
Choose Tales of the Shire if what you want from Middle-earth is atmosphere, food and community rather than sword fights. It is also the easiest pick for someone who has already played several action games and wants a completely different rhythm while staying inside the franchise. Do not buy it expecting a replacement for the remastered The Two Towers’ combat loop.

Choose Gollum for stealth and climbing. It is intentionally unlike a warrior-led hack-and-slash game.

What is actually known about a Two Towers remaster?
No official announcement confirms a dedicated remaster of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. There is no confirmed release date, platform list or preorder status to report.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A GamesRadar report dated 12 August 2026 says Aspyr teased more classic Middle-earth releases after War in the North and mentioned several possible legacy titles. That is a general tease, not confirmation that The Two Towers is one of the announced products. Treat any retailer listing, social-media rumor or speculative date as unverified unless an official announcement identifies the game.
How to avoid buying the wrong release
- Confirm that the product title explicitly names The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, rather than The Return of the King or another Middle-earth game.
- Check the platform and region. A listing for a different console generation is not evidence of a new remaster.
- Look for an official publisher or platform-holder announcement before trusting a date or preorder.
- If you want something available on a modern platform now, use the verified alternatives above instead of treating the rumored remaster as released.
A practical play order
For the smoothest transition from the remastered The Two Towers, play The Return of the King first. Move to War in the North – Legacy Edition if you want a newer official Tolkien action-adventure on Switch 2. Use Demon Stone when combat matters more than setting. Save Gollum for a stealth-and-traversal mood, and choose Tales of the Shire when you want to leave battlefield action entirely.
That order reflects similarity, not a shared story chronology. Only The Return of the King is presented here as the direct continuation of the film-based action formula; the other games are alternatives selected for a particular feature, platform or tone.
