Best Games to Play If You Like The Elder Scrolls but Find Arena Too Dated

Arena Rebuilt is the closest modernization path, while Daggerfall and Morrowind continue the mainline Elder Scrolls series. Here’s what each option offers—and what its sources confirm.

If you want Arena’s world and adventure with more contemporary controls and display support, start with Arena Rebuilt—but know that it is an unfinished fan project, not an official remaster. If you would rather stay with the mainline series, Daggerfall is the next chapter and Morrowind follows it; the official sources confirm their place in the series, but not that their original releases solve Arena’s dated presentation.

Which game is the closest fit?

Arena Rebuilt 0.9.9 Beta is the most direct answer if your main objection is the age of The Elder Scrolls: Arena itself. It reconstructs Arena with the stated aim of modernizing controls and presentation while retaining the original game. Its project page reported the beta as publicly playable on Windows and Linux, with a status date of October 3, 2026; the beta page indicated an update on October 4, 2026. That is a dated project status, not a guarantee of future availability or compatibility. Check the Arena Rebuilt project page for current details.

This is still a beta: expect bugs and unfinished presentation work. You also need a compatible, legitimate installation of the original Arena. The project does not include Bethesda’s game data, so it is not a standalone replacement for the original files.

How the mainline games compare

Game or project How it connects to Arena What is established about modern comfort Status or setup
Arena Rebuilt 0.9.9 Beta Direct reconstruction of Arena Modern-control and display-support intent is documented Playable beta; compatible original Arena installation required; Windows and Linux were listed as supported in the project status dated October 3, 2026. Project page
The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall Next mainline entry after Arena Not established by the official game page Official story details describe High Rock, the King of Daggerfall’s murder, and the Numidium. Bethesda game page
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Third chapter and sequel to Daggerfall, according to Bethesda Support Not established by the cited official support page Current platform and edition details are not established here. Bethesda Support

Choose Daggerfall for the next chapter in the series

Daggerfall is the straightforward choice if you want to continue through the mainline games rather than revisit Arena through a fan reconstruction. Bethesda’s official page places its story in High Rock and centers it on the murder of the King of Daggerfall and the Numidium. That establishes its setting and premise, not that the original game has modern controls or presentation.

Choose Morrowind for a later mainline entry

If you want to skip ahead, Bethesda Support identifies Morrowind as the series’ third chapter and the sequel to Daggerfall. That makes it a clear continuation of the mainline series, but the cited source does not establish current platform availability, edition differences, or how comfortable it feels to play today. Check the relevant edition’s current store and system details before buying.

Is The Elder Scrolls Anthology a solution?

No: it is a collection, not a modernization of Arena. Bethesda described The Elder Scrolls Anthology as a premium physical PC box set spanning Arena through Skyrim Legendary Edition. Current retail stock and condition are unverified, so treat it as a collectible option rather than a dependable way to make Arena feel newer. Bethesda’s Anthology page
