If The Elder Scrolls: Arena will not start or has display, speed, sound, or lockup problems, begin with the DOSBox launchers included with Bethesda’s Windows installation. Bethesda says its default DOSBox configuration works with most hardware setups, so start with the supplied options before changing emulator settings or applying fixes intended for original DOS computers.
Start Arena with Bethesda’s supplied launcher
Bethesda’s Windows package includes separate batch files for fullscreen and windowed play, and may add shortcuts to the Start menu. Try the windowed launcher first if you are troubleshooting a display issue; otherwise, either launcher is a sensible first step. The documented default paths are:
C:Program Files (x86)Bethesda SoftworksArenaArena (Full Screen).batC:Program Files (x86)Bethesda SoftworksArenaArena (Windowed).bat
Your paths may differ if you chose another installation location. Bethesda says its default DOSBox configuration works with the majority of hardware setups, so there is usually no need to preconfigure DOSBox before trying the game. See Bethesda’s Arena installation instructions and its answer to whether DOSBox needs prior configuration.
If Arena won’t launch
- Open the game’s installation folder and run one of the supplied batch files, or use its Start menu shortcut if available.
- Try the other launcher: windowed instead of fullscreen, or vice versa. This can help distinguish a launch failure from a fullscreen display problem.
- If both fail, check the DOSBox status window for messages or errors. The DOSBox manual recommends using it to diagnose emulator problems.
- For help with DOSBox itself, consult the DOSBox manual. Bethesda describes DOSBox as a third-party program included to run the MS-DOS game and directs users to DOSBox documentation for emulator-specific assistance; see Bethesda’s DOSBox assistance guidance.
A failed launch alone does not identify one definite cause. The available Bethesda support guidance does not establish a universal fix for every installation or computer.

If fullscreen is too large or looks wrong
Toggle fullscreen
In DOSBox 0.74-3, press Alt+Enter to switch between fullscreen and windowed mode. If the image is unusable in fullscreen, return to windowed play and continue troubleshooting there.
Check Windows high-DPI scaling
The DOSBox 0.74-3 manual documents a Windows 10 case in which display scaling above 100% combines with DOSBox scaling and makes fullscreen appear too large. Its workaround is to locate the DOSBox executable, open Properties, go to Compatibility, select Change high DPI settings, and set the high-DPI scaling override to Application. This may affect windowed mode; the manual suggests adjusting windowresolution if needed.

Review DOSBox display settings
The DOSBox manual identifies fullresolution, output, and aspect as configuration settings that affect display. The exact configuration file and executable used by a bundled Arena installation can vary, so do not assume every package uses the same file. These instructions are specific to DOSBox 0.74-3 and are not a guarantee that every Arena build has identical controls.
If Arena runs too slowly or too quickly
DOSBox emulates the computer’s CPU, and its cycle setting affects how quickly a game runs. In DOSBox 0.74-3, Ctrl+F12 increases cycles and Ctrl+F11 decreases them. Make a small adjustment, then check whether the game behaves better. If it becomes unstable or too fast, undo the change or lower the cycle count.

More cycles are not always better: the DOSBox manual warns that excessive cycles can hurt performance, and that cycles=max may make a game run too fast or become unstable. The configuration file can control fixed, automatic, or maximum cycle behavior.
The original Arena reference card also recommends lowering the game’s Detail setting for slow play. It mentions SmartDrive in troubleshooting for the DOS environment of its era. Treat that as historical DOS advice, not a required Windows tweak.

If sound problems cause errors or lockups
The original Arena manual says sound effects and music are configured through the game’s Configure Game option. It records the shipped defaults as no sound and gives historical DOS sound settings of base I/O address 220 hex, IRQ 7, and DMA 1. Incorrect settings may cause problems.
As a diagnostic in the game setup, the reference card recommends setting both sound and music to No Sound when a sound conflict is suspected. If that helps, check the game’s own configuration rather than copying the old IRQ, DMA, or I/O values into modern host audio settings. Those values describe DOS-era sound configuration, not current Windows audio requirements.

If you see “Not enough EMS,” low-memory, or frequent-lockup errors
The original Arena reference card states that the game requires 603K of conventional memory in its DOS environment. It explains how to check free conventional memory at a DOS prompt and describes configuring EMS through EMM386 for original DOS setups. It also associates frequent lockups with low conventional memory and sound conflicts.
These are historical requirements and procedures for the DOS environment documented on the archived reference card; they do not mean a modern Windows PC must have only 603K free or needs EMM386 configured. Avoid applying its memory instructions to a bundled DOSBox installation unless you know you are working in the original DOS environment.
What compatibility is established—and what isn’t
The DOSBox compatibility list includes an Arena entry marked runnable with DOSBox 0.74-3, while entries for other DOSBox versions differ. These are community records, not Bethesda certification or a guarantee for every package. The list is useful context, but it is not a universal compatibility rating: DOSBox’s Arena compatibility entry.
Bethesda’s support pages describe the Windows installation and its bundled DOSBox approach. They do not establish a current, version-by-version compatibility guarantee for Windows 11, macOS, Linux, or every storefront edition. Use the instructions for the package you actually installed rather than assuming all releases share the same launcher, configuration file, or operating-system support.
