Quadrilateral Cowboy makes it part of a physical heist, while Watch Dogs puts hacking inside a broader open-world action game. These are different kinds of hacking fantasy, not a ranking or a measure of real-world cybersecurity accuracy.
Which hacking game fits the way you want to play?
| Game | How central is hacking? | What the play style emphasizes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hacknet | The core activity | Terminal and command-style interaction | An investigative hacker story |
| Uplink | The core activity | Freelance contracts and managing risky jobs | Progression through escalating work |
| Quadrilateral Cowboy | A central tool in a heist | Typing programs on a hacking deck to overcome in-world security | Stealth, puzzles, and crew heists |
| Watch Dogs series, including Watch Dogs: Legion | One major mechanic among others | Contextual device manipulation in an open world | Urban action and hacktivist fantasy |
Hacknet: a terminal-focused hacker mystery
Hacknet is the closest fit if you want the act of operating computer systems to define the game. Its story begins when you follow instructions left behind by a recently deceased hacker, giving the simulation an investigative thread rather than making it only a sequence of disconnected tasks.

Steam describes Hacknet as a “true hacking simulation” and says its support system helps beginners grasp commands used in the game. That is a description of the game’s interface and intended accessibility, not evidence that it teaches real-world intrusion skills. The game’s appeal is the focused terminal-and-command fantasy, with a mystery to pull you through it. Steam: Hacknet.
Uplink: freelance contracts and rising stakes
Uplink casts you as a freelance hacker taking jobs for clients. Steam describes work that includes hacking secure systems, stealing data, sabotage, and manipulating evidence. Instead of centering its premise on one mystery, it sells the fantasy of choosing contracts, managing risk, and building toward more consequential jobs.
#1 Best Overall
- Investigate the end of the world as Ringo, an agent of Aion tasked with saving humanity from an apocalypse
- Explore a supernatural RPG with stylish summoners and dark dangers lurking under the neon lights of a cyberpunk Japan
- Amass demons and unlock fusion combinations to create new, stronger demon allies, using their lethal abilities for incredible assaults on your foes
- Strengthen the bonds with your teammates and dive deeper into their soul, reliving their last adventures and discovering the truth of their stories and yours
Choose Uplink over Hacknet if a job-driven loop sounds more appealing than following a story lead. Both make computer intrusion the main activity, but their framing differs: Hacknet emphasizes investigation, while Uplink emphasizes freelance work and escalation. Steam: Uplink.
Quadrilateral Cowboy: hack your way through a heist
Quadrilateral Cowboy moves hacking out of the terminal-only setting and into a first-person heist. Klei describes using a hacking deck and grey-market equipment to get through security systems. You type programs on the portable deck to deal with obstacles in the physical environment, making the hacking part of stealth and puzzle-solving rather than the entire game.

- Computer Hacking design. Gift for children who like to play on the Internet computer and are real gamers. On the Internet, hackers and gamers hack on a computer.
- Gift idea for men and women for birthday or Christmas if they like to chop with other hackers in it.
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
The official game page gives the setup a retro-futurist flavor: a 56.6k modem and 256k of RAM. Pick it if you want a hacker fantasy that involves navigating spaces with a crew, not just working at a computer. Klei Entertainment: Quadrilateral Cowboy.
Watch Dogs: open-world action with hacking as a tool
The Watch Dogs series offers a broader action fantasy. Hacking gives you tactical options in an open world, alongside stealth, traversal, and combat; it is not a close simulation of professional security work. Watch Dogs: Legion frames its London setting around a hacker syndicate, as HP’s overview notes, but that premise does not make the series’ contextual, often immediate device manipulation equivalent to real cybersecurity practice. HP: Best Hacking Games for PC.
