What horizontal gear progression actually means
Horizontal progression shifts the reason to keep playing away from replacing an item with a higher-numbered version. Instead of an endless ladder in which yesterday’s equipment becomes obsolete, your long-term goals may be alternate builds, new abilities, account-wide unlocks, cosmetic collections, mastery tracks, crafting projects, achievements, exploration, or additional content.

That does not necessarily mean a game has no upgrades. A horizontal game can still let you improve a weapon, unlock a stronger ability, or collect a new item. ArenaNet describes Masteries as account-wide abilities that open new possibilities without invalidating past achievements, allowing you to “constantly grow and overcome new challenges while focusing on playing the game instead of grinding for gear.”
The practical effect is that reaching the relevant character level and gear tier does not end your progression; it changes what your goals are. You can pursue mastery tracks, unlock an Elite Specialization, work toward legendary equipment, complete achievements, explore, collect cosmetic skins, and move into additional content. The official game framing also emphasizes character customization, a continuing journey, cosmetics, and exploration rather than an equipment treadmill.
Why old gear stays useful
The value of an established gear set is not continually erased by a new tier. Your effort can remain relevant while you work on a different mastery track, specialization, cosmetic collection, or legendary project. That makes experimentation less punishing: changing your goals does not automatically mean rebuilding your entire foundation every time a new update arrives.

The trade-off
Players who need a strictly linear power ladder may find Guild Wars 2’s self-directed goals unfamiliar. The game asks you to choose what kind of progress matters to you instead of presenting one obvious next item with a higher number. 2. Warframe — extensive mod sidegrades with real farming attached
Warframe is a strong fit when your favorite part of progression is changing how a familiar frame or weapon behaves. A weapon or frame is not defined only by its base statistics. Mod configurations can support different roles, abilities, and tactical priorities. You may keep returning to a familiar item because a new mod arrangement gives it a different job. The meaningful decision is often which configuration to build for a situation, not which newly dropped item has made the previous one worthless.
Where the sidegrades come from

- Auras: They contribute another layer of configuration to a Warframe setup.

The trade-off
Warframe is not a zero-upgrade game. It involves substantial collection, upgrading, and resource farming. 3. Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak — deliberate crafted loadouts, but conventional upgrades remain
Monster Hunter Rise is a diagonal recommendation. Capcom’s manual describes weapons that can be forged or upgraded through branching paths, with different materials and parameter changes. Armor is forged and reinforced, and a weapon’s characteristics change according to the upgrade path. The result is a progression system in which equipment choices are tied to the hunt you want to conduct.
Why equipment remains meaningful
A hunter can build specialized sets for different monsters, weapon types, elemental approaches, and armor skills. Materials earned from hunts feed directly into deliberate crafting goals. Rather than treating every drop as a disposable rung on one ladder, you decide which branch and which loadout solve the next encounter.
How the progression works
- Choose a weapon type: Your starting decision determines the moveset and the kind of branch you will develop.
- Collect materials: Hunts provide the materials required to forge or improve equipment.
- Select a branch: Weapon branches change parameters and characteristics, so two routes can support different priorities.
- Forge and reinforce armor: Armor pieces are built and strengthened to support the skills and defenses needed for a hunt.

The trade-off
Monster Hunter Rise still contains conventional upgrades. 4. Destiny 2 — a conditional pick for authored weapon sidegrades
Destiny 2 belongs on this list for players who mainly dislike random replacement and want control over a weapon’s configuration. Bungie’s Weapon Crafting Guide explains that players can unlock weapon Patterns, then “Shape and Reshape unique weapon options” and increase weapon levels with in-game materials.

Crafting lets you pursue a preferred roll instead of waiting indefinitely for the exact combination to appear. Once you have an eligible Pattern, you can shape a weapon and later reshape it as your build needs change. That makes the progression path more authored: you are working toward a configuration you selected rather than accepting every random result as a temporary upgrade.
Why it is not a pure horizontal recommendation
Weapon crafting alone does not establish that the entire game avoids vertical progression. The system supports controlled sidegrades for crafted weapons, but it does not turn every aspect of Destiny 2 into a permanent, no-replacement equipment model. Treat it as a targeted solution for players who value control over weapon rolls, not as the benchmark for eliminating gear treadmills.
Best fit
Choose Destiny 2 if your frustration is specifically random weapon rolls and you enjoy refining a favored weapon with materials. Look elsewhere if your requirement is that the whole game’s progression remain horizontal across every equipment category.
5. Final Fantasy XIV — a secondary choice for crafting and materia specialists
Final Fantasy XIV supports deep crafting and materia customization. Its official Blacksmith guide documents attaching materia to gear, including gear whose ordinary materia slots are already filled. For a player who enjoys optimizing equipment and pursuing crafting goals, that creates a progression path beyond simply waiting for a combat drop with a larger number.

Choose Guild Wars 2 if replacement itself is the problem

Destiny 2 makes sense when random rolls are your main complaint. Patterns and reshaping give you a route toward a chosen configuration, but keep your expectations limited to crafted weapon sidegrades rather than a game-wide horizontal model.

Choose Final Fantasy XIV as a crafting project
Final Fantasy XIV fits players whose preferred progression is making and tuning gear. Materia customization and crafting can be satisfying long-term goals, but the available documentation supports a crafting-focused recommendation rather than a claim that all combat progression is horizontal.
Common expectations that lead to disappointment
“Horizontal” does not mean “no numbers ever increase”
Warframe upgrades items, Monster Hunter forges and reinforces equipment, Destiny 2 levels crafted weapons, and Final Fantasy XIV lets you optimize gear. Horizontal progression describes where the meaningful choices and long-term goals sit; it does not require every statistic to remain frozen.
Sidegrades can still require farming
Alternative builds are only useful when you can obtain the required components.
