Prices vary by country, retailer, condition, and sale period. The Steam Deck OLED price references used in 2025 coverage were $549 for 512GB and $649 for 1TB in the U.S.; treat those as dated U.S. references rather than current prices. The MSI Claw 8 AI+ carried a cited $899.99 U.S. MSRP. Always distinguish new, refurbished, open-box, and used listings.
First decide what kind of handheld you need
“Gaming handheld” describes several different products:
#1 Best Overall
- ALL GAMES, ALL PLACES, ALL YOURS – Get ready to game on the 8" 120Hz Lenovo PureSight display and launch any title using Legion Space. The AMD Ryzen Z2 Go processor and AMD Radeon graphics deliver incredible gaming performance.
- SEE EVERY DETAIL – Make every scene pop with 500 nits of stunning brightness and 100% sRGB color accuracy. And with 10-point touch support, your interactions are as precise as your aim.
- PLAY YOUR WAY – Play hundreds of high-quality PC games with your complimentary 3 months of PC Game Pass and EA Play. With new games added all the time, there’s always something new to play.
- POWER-UP AND GO – When it comes to gaming on the go, battery life is everything. The Lenovo Legion Go S is built with a robust 55.5Whr battery that delivers the long-lasting power you need for extended play sessions.
- TAKE FULL CONTROL – Get ready to dominate with the ergonomic Legion TrueStrike Controllers, designed for all-day comfort and precision. With their anti-slip texture, you’ll stay in control during even the most intense battles.
- Dedicated consoles: Nintendo Switch 2, built around Nintendo software, simple menus, docked play, and local multiplayer.
- PC gaming handhelds: Steam Deck, ROG Ally X, Legion Go, and MSI Claw models, which run PC games locally.
- Streaming clients: PlayStation Portal, Logitech G Cloud, or a phone paired with a controller. These depend on remote play or cloud services and are not substitutes for local AAA gaming.
- Retro and emulation handhelds: Android or Linux devices from companies such as Retroid, Anbernic, and Ayn. They can be smaller and cheaper, but capability depends on the system, emulator, settings, and legally owned software.
There is no universal winner. The best device is the one that runs the games you actually play while imposing compromises you can live with.
Best overall PC handheld: ASUS ROG Ally X
The ASUS ROG Ally X was the strongest all-round Windows handheld available for most of 2025. Its Ryzen Z1 Extreme platform, 24GB of RAM, 80-Wh battery, 1080p 120Hz variable-refresh-rate display, improved grip, and broad Windows compatibility make it the safest recommendation for buyers who want one device for many PC ecosystems.
Why it wins
- Broad compatibility: Windows gives it native access to Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox Game Pass PC, Battle.net, EA, Ubisoft, mods, and games whose anti-cheat systems do not support SteamOS.
- Useful VRR display: Variable refresh can make fluctuating frame rates feel smoother than a fixed-refresh panel, particularly in demanding games.
- Large battery for its class: The 80-Wh cell is a meaningful advantage over smaller-battery handhelds, although it does not turn high-power AAA gaming into an all-day activity.
- Better headroom than Steam Deck: At higher power limits, its Z1 Extreme hardware is better suited to modern 3D games. On battery, however, the advantage depends on the chosen wattage, resolution, upscaling, graphics preset, drivers, and frame-rate target.
- More comfortable redesign: The revised ergonomics and additional memory make it a more complete product than the original ROG Ally.
Who should not buy it
Do not choose the Ally X merely because it has the highest-looking specification sheet. SteamOS is easier to navigate, suspend, and resume. If you mainly play Steam indies, older games, or turn-based titles, the Deck OLED can be more pleasant and considerably better value. Windows also means dealing with desktop menus, launchers, firmware, drivers, updates, and occasional controller or sleep problems.
Best value and easiest PC handheld: Steam Deck OLED
The Steam Deck OLED remained the easiest PC handheld to recommend for many buyers in 2025. SteamOS behaves more like a console than a miniature desktop computer, suspend and resume are convenient, the OLED screen has excellent contrast, and Valve’s Steam integration makes browsing, installing, mapping controls, and checking compatibility unusually straightforward.
Why it remains such a good buy
- SteamOS simplicity: The game-focused interface, community control layouts, compatibility information, and library integration reduce setup work.
- Excellent screen experience: OLED contrast improves dark scenes and perceived image quality, especially in dim rooms. It is not automatically the best panel for desktop work or bright outdoor use.
- Strong real-world value: It is excellent for indies, older AAA games, emulation, strategy titles, and games that run well at 30 or 40 frames per second.
- Good ergonomics: The controls and grips are comfortable for long sessions, although comfort remains personal and the Deck is not a small device.
- Expandable storage: microSD support makes it easy to add a large game library without immediately paying for the biggest internal SSD.
The limits
The Deck OLED is not the fastest handheld. Its older Zen 2 and RDNA 2 platform cannot match the ROG Ally X or MSI Claw 8 AI+ in demanding games. SteamOS also does not provide Windows-equivalent access to PC Game Pass, and some launchers, multiplayer games, and anti-cheat systems require workarounds or do not work properly.
“Verified” and “Playable” labels are useful but not permanent guarantees. Patches, Proton versions, launchers, account requirements, and anti-cheat updates can change a game’s experience. Check the specific games you own before buying.
Steam Deck OLED versus LCD
Choose the LCD Steam Deck if it is available at a substantial official, refurbished, or used discount and your priority is inexpensive Steam gaming. Choose OLED when the price difference is reasonable and you care about contrast, screen response, battery efficiency, and the newer display package. A discounted LCD model is still a better value than an expensive Windows handheld if you do not need Windows-only games.
Best dedicated console: Nintendo Switch 2
The Nintendo Switch 2, released June 5, 2025, belongs in a separate category. It is the best choice for Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Nintendo first-party games, family play, and buyers who want a device that works as a handheld, tabletop console, and TV system with minimal configuration.
Rank #2
- High-Performance Computing: Harness the power of the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor to effortlessly handle demanding tasks. Enjoy reliable, high-performance computing wherever you go.
- Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.
- Perfection Through Anthropometry: As a handheld device, Claw has achieved the optimal balance between its grip and weight. We have meticulously polished various design details, from the curvature that fits the palm, to the finger grip positions and trigger force.
- Best-in-Class Battery Life: Unlock exceptional gaming endurance with our breakthrough battery capacity. It's where efficient power meets robust performance—more game, less charge.
- 8-inch Smoothness Ready: Dive into the ultimate gaming experience with our 8-inch premium 120Hz gaming display, with exceptional color reproduction and smooth action.
Why choose Switch 2
- Nintendo exclusives are the decisive reason to buy it.
- The included dock supports the intended TV experience.
- Removable controllers and local multiplayer are particularly useful for families and couch co-op.
- The console interface is simpler than Windows, with no need to manage PC launchers, drivers, graphics presets, or TDP modes.
- Its game library and online features are designed around Nintendo’s ecosystem rather than general-purpose PC software.
Switch 2 is not a replacement for a PC handheld if you want mods, PC Game Pass, the broadest storefront selection, mouse-and-keyboard games, or access to your existing Steam library. Nor should its performance be compared to PC handheld benchmarks as though the platforms run the same games under the same conditions.
Best large-screen Windows handheld: Lenovo Legion Go
The original Lenovo Legion Go remained relevant in 2025 because of its 8.8-inch 2560×1600 display, detachable controllers, built-in kickstand, and mouse-like FPS controller mode. It is the specialist pick for readers who value screen size and flexibility more than low weight.
Where it makes sense
- The large panel gives strategy games, text-heavy interfaces, and desktop applications more room.
- Detachable controllers and the kickstand help with tabletop play and shared viewing.
- The FPS mode can be useful for shooters and mouse-oriented games.
- It can function as a small Windows computer when paired with a dock, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
What you give up
The Legion Go is heavy, and its high-resolution display can demand more from the GPU than the hardware can comfortably provide in modern games. Its battery endurance under demanding loads is a notable weakness. It is a good large-screen and flexibility recommendation, not an automatic performance winner.

Best high-performance alternative: MSI Claw 8 AI+
The MSI Claw 8 AI+ was a genuine 2025 contender, distinct from the reputation of MSI’s first-generation Claw. It used Intel’s Core Ultra 7 258V platform and paired it with an 80-Wh battery, an 8-inch 1920×1200 120Hz VRR display, Hall-effect controls, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports.
Windows Central’s testing placed it substantially ahead of the ROG Ally X and original Legion Go in selected Cyberpunk 2077 comparisons. That is useful evidence, but not a universal speed ranking: results depend on TDP, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling, drivers, frame generation, and whether the handheld is plugged in. Treat “fastest” claims as test-condition claims, not guarantees for every game.
Why buy it
- Performance is the priority.
- The large battery provides more capacity than many competing handhelds.
- Hall-effect sticks can reduce the risk of conventional potentiometer stick drift, but they do not eliminate failure in triggers, buttons, connectors, firmware, or other components.
- Dual Thunderbolt 4 ports are useful for fast peripherals, displays, and desktop-style setups.
Why skip it
The cited $899.99 U.S. MSRP makes it a difficult value proposition. Windows remains less polished for handheld navigation than SteamOS, and demanding games can still exhaust the battery in roughly two hours under some testing conditions. If it is discounted heavily, verify the exact Claw model: do not assume the original MSI Claw offers the same performance or experience.
SteamOS versus Windows: the decision that matters most
| SteamOS | Windows |
|---|---|
| Console-like game interface | Broadest launcher and storefront support |
| Fast suspend and resume | Native PC Game Pass access |
| Excellent Steam integration | Easier mods, peripherals, and non-Steam software |
| Less desktop overhead | Better odds with anti-cheat multiplayer |
| Some launchers and games need workarounds | Touchscreen desktop controls remain awkward |
| Compatibility is game-specific | Updates, drivers, firmware, and background processes can interrupt play |
Windows handhelds often provide helper applications such as Armoury Crate SE, Lenovo Space, and MSI Center M, but these overlays are not identical to SteamOS’s integrated experience. The practical trade-off is simple: Windows maximizes software access; SteamOS minimizes handheld friction.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Performance: compare power modes, not just benchmark headlines
Handheld performance changes substantially with power limits. A 15W test is more relevant to battery-conscious portable play, while 25–30W testing shows what a device may achieve plugged in or with rapid battery drain. Maximum TDP is not the same as sustained real-world performance because cooling, firmware, drivers, memory bandwidth, and battery behavior also matter.
Rank #3
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Resolution, upscaling, graphics presets, frame generation, and frame-rate caps can change results as much as the handheld itself. A sensible target is often a stable 30 FPS, or 40 FPS with a compatible refresh mode, rather than an unstable headline frame rate.
For example, a benchmark comparison may show the MSI Claw 8 AI+ leading in Cyberpunk 2077 under one set of conditions. That supports a performance advantage in that test—not a promise that it will be faster in every game or more enjoyable on battery. Use benchmarks to understand trade-offs, not to create a falsely precise universal ranking.
Battery life: capacity is not runtime
Battery claims must identify the workload. Video playback, idle time, emulation, indie games, older 3D games, and new AAA games produce very different results. Plugged-in performance also tells you little about unplugged runtime.
The 80-Wh batteries in the ROG Ally X and MSI Claw 8 AI+ are meaningful advantages, but demanding games can still consume them quickly. Windows Central reported roughly two hours of demanding gaming in testing for the MSI Claw 8 AI+, illustrating why a large battery is not an all-day AAA guarantee.
- Carry a reputable 65W-or-higher USB-C Power Delivery charger, checking the handheld’s required input.
- Use a power bank only when its USB-C PD output is sufficient; advertised capacity alone does not guarantee compatibility or fast charging.
- Lower TDP before reducing every graphics setting.
- Try a 30 FPS cap or 40Hz/40FPS mode for longer sessions.
- Download and launch games before travel if you may be offline.
- Assume you will need a charger for demanding AAA games regardless of advertised capacity.
Displays, controls, and comfort
There is no single best display specification. The Deck OLED wins on contrast and perceived image quality. The Legion Go wins on physical size and resolution. The Ally X’s 120Hz VRR screen can make variable frame rates feel smoother. The Claw 8 AI+ combines a large 120Hz VRR panel with a 1920×1200 resolution, although independent testing did not find every aspect of its brightness and color performance class-leading.
Consider whether the GPU can drive a panel at native resolution. A 1600p display may look sharp for desktop work while games run at a lower internal resolution with upscaling. Screen size, glare, brightness, text clarity, refresh rate, and VRR can matter more than the maximum number printed on the box.
For controls, assess weight, grip shape, stick placement, D-pad, triggers, back buttons, fan noise, heat near the hands, and comfort after more than 30 minutes. Detachable controllers and a kickstand are useful features, but they add mechanical complexity and do not automatically make a device comfortable. Hall-effect sticks reduce one common drift mechanism; they are not a guarantee against controller failure.

Storage, docks, and total ownership cost
Game sizes make internal storage important, but the largest SSD is not always the best purchase. Compare internal capacity, microSD support, replacement difficulty, and the cost of adding storage. The Steam Deck is attractive to technically inclined owners because of its repairability and upgrade-oriented design, though opening a handheld carries risks and may complicate warranty service depending on the repair and region. Valve’s official materials provide the relevant product information.

Budget for more than the handheld:
- Dock or USB-C hub for TV output, Ethernet, external displays, keyboards, and mice.
- 65W-or-higher USB-C PD charger for PC handhelds when the included charger is inconvenient or insufficient for your setup.
- microSD card where supported.
- Protective case, particularly for the larger and heavier Legion Go.
- Screen protector for travel or shared household use.
- Power bank with suitable USB-C PD output.
- Games, subscriptions, and possibly an SSD upgrade.
Switch 2 includes a dock and is designed for handheld, tabletop, and TV modes. PC handhelds generally require a separate dock or hub, so include that expense in comparisons. A docked Windows handheld with monitor, keyboard, mouse, charger, and storage can become useful as a compact computer—but the total cost may approach that of a laptop.

- Mostly Steam indies and older games: Steam Deck OLED.
- Game Pass PC, Battle.net, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, or anti-cheat multiplayer: ROG Ally X, with MSI Claw 8 AI+ as a premium alternative.
- Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Nintendo multiplayer, and family sharing: Switch 2.
- Strategy games, shooters, and text-heavy games: Legion Go if the weight is acceptable.
- Retro gaming: Steam Deck OLED for flexibility, or a dedicated Android retro handheld for a smaller and cheaper device. Emulation performance and legality depend on the system, emulator, settings, and software ownership.
- Remote play only: PlayStation Portal or a phone-and-controller setup may be sufficient, but these are streaming solutions rather than self-contained local gaming handhelds.
Answers to common buying scenarios
“I want to play every PC game.”
No handheld can guarantee that. Windows offers the broadest compatibility, but individual games can still have anti-cheat conflicts, launcher bugs, unsupported mappings, poor shader compilation, DRM requirements, sleep problems, or performance below an acceptable frame rate.
“I want new AAA games for several years.”
Do not buy based on promises of future-proofing. PC handheld APUs age quickly, and new games increasingly require upscaling, reduced settings, or frame-rate caps. The Ally X or Claw 8 AI+ provide more headroom, but they still require compromises. The Deck is better value, not the best long-term choice for graphically demanding releases.

“I need a travel handheld.”
Prioritize weight, glare, suspend/resume reliability, offline access, and charging. Download games before leaving home, account for airport or transit charging, and remember that cloud gaming and remote play depend on network quality. A larger battery helps, but it also adds weight.
“I only play competitive multiplayer.”
Favor Windows, especially the ROG Ally X, but remember that anti-cheat support can change. Performance mode affects battery life, built-in controls may not feel like a full-size controller, and Wi-Fi quality and latency matter more than a small benchmark difference.
“I want the cheapest good option.”
Start with the Steam Deck LCD when it is officially discounted or available refurbished at an attractive price. A cheap Windows handheld is not automatically better once you add a charger, dock, storage, case, and the cost of troubleshooting. Check warranty region and return policy carefully for used and open-box units.
Alternatives worth considering
- Steam Deck LCD: The budget reference point when discounted. It provides the same broad SteamOS concept with an LCD screen and older display and battery package.
- Original ROG Ally: Consider it only at a major discount and after checking battery condition, warranty, and included accessories.
- Nintendo Switch OLED: A sensible alternative if Switch 2 pricing or availability is unfavorable and the older Nintendo library meets your needs.
- Dedicated retro handhelds: Smaller and cheaper for retro-focused buyers, but not replacements for modern PC handhelds.
- PlayStation Portal or a phone/controller combination: Good for remote play if the buyer already has the relevant console and reliable Wi-Fi. They are not appropriate recommendations for local AAA gaming.
2025 buying checklist
- Confirm the exact model, processor, RAM, SSD capacity, and display type.
- Check whether the listed price is new, refurbished, open-box, or used.
- Verify warranty coverage and return rights in your region.
- Check compatibility for your actual games, especially multiplayer titles and non-Steam launchers.
- Confirm the charger wattage and budget for a suitable USB-C PD charger if needed.
- Determine whether a dock is included. Switch 2 is designed to include one; PC handhelds generally need a separate purchase.
- Budget for storage, a case, screen protection, and games or subscriptions.
- Compare performance at the power limit you will really use, not only plugged-in maximum TDP.
- Prefer stable 30 FPS or 40 FPS over an unstable maximum frame rate.
- Download and test important games during the return window.
2025 verdict
Choose the ROG Ally X if you want the broadest PC compatibility, Game Pass PC, VRR, and stronger performance in a relatively compact device. Choose the Steam Deck OLED if you mainly use Steam and value a console-like experience, OLED contrast, and price-to-usability value. Choose the Switch 2 if Nintendo games, family play, and TV use define the purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions
What was the best gaming handheld of 2025?
The ASUS ROG Ally X was the best overall Windows PC handheld for broad compatibility and performance. The Steam Deck OLED was the better value and easier choice for Steam-focused players, while the Nintendo Switch 2 was the best dedicated console.
Is Steam Deck OLED better than ROG Ally X?
It depends on your games. Steam Deck OLED is easier to use and excellent value for Steam games, indies, older AAA games, and emulation. ROG Ally X is better for Windows launchers, PC Game Pass, anti-cheat multiplayer, and higher-performance gaming.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is Nintendo Switch 2 a PC handheld competitor?
Only indirectly. Switch 2 competes for the same portable-gaming budget, but it is a dedicated Nintendo console with its own software ecosystem, dock, and multiplayer design—not a Windows or Steam gaming PC.
Do 80-Wh handheld batteries last all day?
No. An 80-Wh battery is a significant advantage, but demanding AAA games can still drain it in roughly two hours under some conditions. Runtime varies with TDP, brightness, resolution, frame rate, and workload.
Should I buy a used gaming handheld?
A used or refurbished device can be excellent value, but verify battery health, stick and trigger function, screen condition, charger, storage, warranty region, return policy, and the exact model before purchasing.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the ROG Ally X for broad PC gaming, the Steam Deck OLED for the easiest Steam experience, and the Switch 2 for Nintendo and family play. Choose the Legion Go or MSI Claw 8 AI+ only when their specific strengths outweigh their weight, price, battery, or software compromises.
