For a sharper IPS image, choose the Acer EK220Q E3bi. If you own a PS5 or Xbox Series console and find a sale at the $100 limit, MSI’s G242LW is the most balanced choice; the larger G275L E14 suits couch play.
All four monitors are 1080p displays. A 144Hz label describes the monitor’s ceiling, not what a console will output: PS5 and Xbox Series systems can use 1080p/120Hz in supported games, while Switch, PS4 and Xbox One generally target 1080p/60Hz.

| Acer EK220Q E3bi | 21.5-inch IPS, 1080p | 100Hz, 1ms VRB, HDMI 1.4, FreeSync over HDMI, built-in speakers | Switch, PS4, Xbox One and general gaming |
| MSI G242LW | 23.8-inch IPS, 1080p | 144Hz HDMI 1.4; 1080p at 60Hz and 120Hz; PS5/Xbox VRR support | Best feature balance for PS5 or Xbox Series |

Prices move constantly. Walmart listings showed the Sceptre series at about $64.98 and an MSI 144Hz model at about $84.99 when checked. Those are snapshots, not permanent prices; tax, shipping, seller, condition and warranty can push the delivered total over $100. Sale examples from PC Gamer (October 14, 2026) and Tom’s Guide (a 2025 sale) show why checking the current listing matters more than relying on an old price.

What to expect from a sub-$100 console monitor
At this budget, 1080p is the sensible target. The shortlisted models do not establish 1440p or 4K console input, and the Sceptre specification specifically documents signals up to 1920×1080 at 144Hz. A PS5 or Xbox Series console can therefore gain smoother 120Hz play at 1080p, but these screens will not display a 4K/120Hz signal.

Refresh rate and console frame rate are different measurements. A 144Hz monitor refreshes up to 144 times per second, yet a console game must render and output 120 frames per second for 120Hz mode to make a visible difference. A 60-fps game remains a 60Hz experience even when connected to a 144Hz display.
Which consoles benefit from 120Hz?
- PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: can use 1080p/120Hz when the game, console setting and HDMI path all support it. Variable refresh rate (VRR) can smooth fluctuations in supported games.
- PlayStation 4 and Xbox One: 1080p/60Hz is generally the practical target for this class of monitor.
- Nintendo Switch: plan around 1080p/60Hz when docked. A 100Hz or 144Hz panel still works, but the console does not normally supply 120Hz gameplay.
What the HDMI number means
HDMI 1.4 is capable of carrying 1080p at 120Hz, so it is adequate for the Sceptre, Acer and G242LW’s documented 1080p modes. HDMI 1.4 does not provide 4K/120Hz. The G275L E14 uses HDMI 2.0, but its listed console modes are still 1080p at 60Hz and 120Hz; the newer port does not turn a 1080p panel into a 4K display.
Detailed monitor recommendations
Sceptre E225W-FW144: cheapest path to 120Hz-capable gaming
Choose this 22-inch 1080p model when the roughly $65 listing is live and your priority is refresh rate per dollar. Its support specification states, “Supported HDMI Signals — Up to 1920 x 1080 @ 144Hz,” and it has two HDMI 1.4 inputs. Two inputs are useful if you regularly switch between a console and another HDMI device without moving a cable.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The important limitation is scope: the documented signal is 1080p, with no evidence here of 1440p or 4K input. It is therefore a good fit for a PS5 or Xbox Series set to 1080p/120Hz, not for someone shopping for a 4K console display. The 22-inch size keeps pixels reasonably dense at a desk, while the smaller screen is less suited to a sofa several feet away.
- Buy it for: the lowest-cost 1080p high-refresh option and two HDMI inputs.
- Check first: the live delivered price, seller and return policy; the bargain depends on the listing remaining near $65.
- Do not assume: that a 144Hz monitor makes a console output 144Hz. Current consoles top out at 120Hz in supported modes.
Acer EK220Q E3bi: IPS image and speakers at entry-level pricing
The EK220Q E3bi is a 21.5-inch IPS monitor with 1920×1080 resolution, 100Hz refresh, a stated 1ms VRB mode, HDMI 1.4 and AMD FreeSync over HDMI. It also includes built-in speakers, a practical advantage when a console is connected directly and you do not want to buy separate desktop speakers immediately.
Its 100Hz ceiling is above 60Hz and can make compatible PC play smoother, but it does not provide a 120Hz console mode in the listed specifications. For Switch, PS4 and Xbox One, that distinction is less important because 60Hz is normally the target. On a PS5 or Xbox Series console, select 60Hz unless the monitor’s manual and on-screen information confirm a supported 120Hz signal.

IPS is the reason to choose this model over the cheapest high-refresh alternative: IPS panels are generally selected for consistent color and viewing angles, which helps when more than one person is watching. The 1ms figure is a vendor mode specification, not an independent laboratory measurement.
MSI G242LW: best balanced choice for PS5 and Xbox Series
The 23.8-inch IPS G242LW is the most complete match for a current-generation console when a sale brings it to $100 or less. MSI lists 144Hz operation over HDMI 1.4, explicit “1080p: 60Hz and 120Hz” support, and “VRR: PS5 and Xbox Supported.” Those entries answer the two questions that generic 144Hz listings often leave open: whether 120Hz is available through HDMI and whether console VRR is supported.
At 23.8 inches, 1080p remains a sensible desk distance. The IPS panel is also a better fit for split-screen or spectator viewing than a narrow-angle panel. HDMI 1.4 is not a weakness for this use because the documented console target is 1080p/120Hz rather than 4K/120Hz.

- Best match: PS5 or Xbox Series owners who want 120Hz and VRR without moving to a higher resolution.
- Price condition: it must be on sale at or below the $100 cap; regular prices can exceed it.
- Audio planning: verify the current specification for speakers and headphone output before ordering, because the cited console specification does not establish a built-in speaker system.
MSI G275L E14: larger 27-inch screen with documented console modes
The G275L E14 uses a 27-inch IPS panel, 144Hz refresh and HDMI 2.0. Its datasheet lists 1080p at 60Hz and 120Hz plus PS5 and Xbox VRR support. It is the better ergonomic choice when the monitor sits farther away, on a deep desk or in a couch-gaming setup where a 24-inch image feels small.
The trade-off is pixel density. Twenty-seven inches with 1920×1080 spreads the same number of pixels over a larger area, so text and fine game detail look less sharp up close than on a 21.5- or 23.8-inch 1080p screen. Sit at a normal desk distance and decide whether the larger field of view matters more than crispness.
- Choose it for: a big image, 1080p/120Hz and console VRR.
- Skip it for: close-up desktop work where 1080p pixel density is a concern.
- Remember: HDMI 2.0 does not imply 4K support on this 1080p panel.
How to choose between them
| Your priority | Most suitable pick | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Spend as little as possible while keeping high refresh | Sceptre E225W-FW144 | About $65 when the listing is available; 144Hz and two HDMI 1.4 inputs |
| IPS panel and built-in speakers for a 60Hz console | Acer EK220Q E3bi | 21.5-inch IPS, 100Hz, FreeSync over HDMI and speakers |
| PS5/Xbox Series 120Hz plus VRR at a desk | MSI G242LW | Explicit 1080p/120Hz and PS5/Xbox VRR support |
| PS5/Xbox Series play from farther away | MSI G275L E14 | 27-inch IPS with the same documented 1080p/120Hz and VRR support |
Check compatibility before ordering
- Identify the console: write down whether you have a PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, PS4 or Xbox One. That determines whether 120Hz is a meaningful requirement.
- Match the desired signal: for current-generation consoles, look for an explicit 1080p 120Hz entry rather than relying on “gaming” or “144Hz” in a product title. For older consoles and Switch, 1080p/60Hz is usually sufficient.
- Read the HDMI specification: confirm the exact input used by the console. HDMI 1.4 is suitable for 1080p/120Hz, while none of these shortlisted displays establishes 4K/120Hz input.
- Confirm VRR wording: if you want variable refresh on PS5 or Xbox, look for a statement naming those consoles. FreeSync over HDMI is useful information, but it is not by itself proof of console VRR compatibility.
- Plan audio: check for built-in speakers, a headphone jack or another audio path. The Acer listing includes speakers; do not assume the other models do without checking their current manuals.
- Measure the setup: a 21.5- or 22-inch screen suits a compact desk, 23.8 inches is a middle ground, and 27 inches is more comfortable at a distance but less sharp at close range.
- Verify the delivered total: add tax and shipping, check whether the seller is offering new or open-box stock, and read the warranty and return window immediately before paying.
Setting up 120Hz on PS5 or Xbox Series
PS5 checklist
- Connect the console directly to the monitor’s HDMI input with a cable rated for the console’s output; avoid an unverified switch or receiver while troubleshooting.
- On PS5, open Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output and review the current resolution and 120 Hz output information.
- Set the resolution to 1080p if necessary, enable 120 Hz output, and run the console’s video-output information screen. The monitor must advertise a compatible 1080p/120Hz mode.
- Enable VRR in the same video settings only after confirming that the monitor lists PS5 VRR support. Test with a game that offers a 120Hz or performance mode; a 60-fps title will not become 120Hz.
Xbox Series checklist
- Connect the Xbox directly to HDMI and open Settings → General → TV & display options.
- Choose 1080p, set the refresh rate to 120Hz, then open 4K TV details to see which combinations the monitor reports.
- Under Video modes, enable Allow variable refresh rate when the display is identified as compatible. If the option is absent, recheck the monitor input, cable and published console support.
- Use a game with a 120Hz performance mode to verify the result. The dashboard setting alone does not make every game render at 120 frames per second.
If 120Hz does not appear
- Confirm that the console is set to 1080p rather than an unsupported 1440p or 4K mode.
- Try the other HDMI input on models with two inputs, then power-cycle the console and monitor.
- Remove HDMI splitters, capture cards and receivers temporarily.
- Check the monitor’s on-screen menu for an HDMI mode, high-refresh setting or compatibility toggle, and consult the model manual.
- Remember that a display can be capable of 144Hz through a particular input while a console profile is limited to 60Hz; the manufacturer’s console table is the deciding evidence.
VRR, response time and what the specifications do not prove
VRR synchronizes the monitor’s refresh timing with changing frame output, reducing tearing when frame rate moves around. It is valuable on PS5 and Xbox Series when the display explicitly supports those consoles. It does not increase a game’s frame rate and cannot turn a 60-fps title into a 120-fps title.

Numbers such as “1ms” need context. Acer’s 1ms VRB is a vendor response-time mode, and similar claims on budget displays should be treated as specifications rather than lab-tested results. No durable independent input-lag or response-time measurements were established for every model in this group, so do not rank them by the printed millisecond figure alone.
Audio, mounting and everyday usability
Cheap monitors often assume that audio is handled elsewhere. The Acer EK220Q E3bi is the only shortlisted model whose cited specification includes built-in speakers. For the other displays, plan to use a headset connected to the controller, a monitor headphone output if present, or an audio-extraction solution that is compatible with your console. Verify the exact port layout in the current manual because budget revisions can differ.
Check the stand footprint and VESA mounting information before buying an arm or wall bracket. The supplied specifications do not establish VESA dimensions for every model, so mounting compatibility must be confirmed on the product page or manual rather than inferred from screen size.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon buying mistakes
- Buying on the refresh number alone: 144Hz is useful only when your console and game can send more than 60Hz.
- Assuming HDMI 2.0 means 4K: the G275L E14 has HDMI 2.0 but remains a 1080p monitor.
- Ignoring viewing distance: a 27-inch 1080p image is easier to see across a room but softer up close than a 22- or 24-inch model.
- Forgetting sound: a monitor can display a console perfectly while providing no convenient speaker output.
- Trusting an old sale price: the $64.98 Sceptre, $84.99 MSI and $99 Gigabyte examples are dated observations. Inventory, seller, shipping and tax can change the total today.
- Expecting test-level performance from marketing: response-time and refresh claims from the manufacturer are not substitutes for independent input-lag testing.
Final buying decision
For the lowest price, buy the Sceptre E225W-FW144 if its delivered total remains near $65 and 1080p is all you need. Pick the Acer EK220Q E3bi when IPS viewing angles and built-in speakers matter more than 120Hz. PS5 and Xbox Series owners should wait for the MSI G242LW to reach $100 or less because its specification explicitly combines 1080p/120Hz with console VRR. Choose the MSI G275L E14 instead when a larger 27-inch image and HDMI 2.0 are worth accepting softer 1080p detail at close range.
