For a new PC built mainly for Crusader Kings III, prioritize a modern CPU, 32GB of dual-channel RAM and an NVMe SSD before paying extra for a flagship graphics card. A balanced default is an eight-core gaming CPU, 32GB DDR5, a 2TB SSD and a midrange-to-upper-midrange GPU. That combination suits long campaigns and leaves room for other games; a less expensive six-core build is enough for ordinary 1080p play.

CK3’s map and interface make the graphics card relevant, particularly at 4K, but the simulation can become CPU-sensitive as a campaign grows. The right balance depends on resolution, mods and what else you play. The lists below are target configurations, not benchmark-tested systems; choose exact parts based on current US pricing and case, cooling and power-supply compatibility.

Four sensible CK3 PC build targets

These are component targets rather than fixed shopping carts. A comparable current CPU or GPU is a reasonable substitute when it costs less or better suits your other games.

Build Resolution CPU GPU Memory Storage Best for Trade-off
Value 1080p Ryzen 5 7600 or comparable modern Intel six-core Radeon RX 7600/7600 XT, RTX 4060-class or similar current card 32GB DDR5, 2×16GB 1TB PCIe NVMe Normal campaigns, modest mods and general gaming on a budget Less headroom for very large mod lists or demanding games at higher resolutions
CK3-focused default 1080p or 1440p Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Ryzen 7 9800X3D or comparable high-end gaming CPU Radeon RX 9070 or GeForce RTX 5070 32GB DDR5, 6000 MT/s-class kit with stable timings 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe Long campaigns, strategy games and strong all-round gaming A high-end gaming CPU can be more than CK3 alone needs
Balanced 4K 4K Ryzen 7 9800X3D-class gaming CPU Radeon RX 9070 XT, GeForce RTX 5070 Ti or discounted RTX 5080 32GB DDR5; 64GB for heavy mods or multitasking 2TB NVMe; 4TB for a large library CK3 plus demanding modern games at high settings Costs substantially more than needed for CK3’s own graphics workload
High-end general gaming High-refresh 4K Ryzen 7 9800X3D-class; more cores for productivity workloads GeForce RTX 5080 or Radeon RX 9070 XT/next-tier AMD card, depending on price 64GB DDR5 2–4TB NVMe Demanding games, ray tracing, content creation or GPU compute Not a necessary CK3-only purchase

Value 1080p: sensible without overspending

Pair a modern six-core CPU such as the Ryzen 5 7600 with a B650/B850-class AM5 motherboard, 32GB of DDR5 in two matched DIMMs, a 1TB NVMe SSD, and a quality 650W Gold power supply. Add a well-ventilated micro-ATX or ATX case and a competent tower cooler; a boxed cooler is an option if one is included and its noise and performance suit you.

  • Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.

This is the entry tier worth considering for a new 2026 build intended to last beyond CK3. Steam’s minimum requirements are a compatibility baseline, not a promise of comfortable late-game or modded play.

CK3-focused default: favor campaign headroom

Use a fast eight-core gaming CPU, 32GB DDR5, a 2TB SSD and either a Radeon RX 9070 or GeForce RTX 5070. A B650/B850 or X870-class AM5 board with adequate power delivery and M.2 support, a large air cooler or 240mm liquid cooler, and a 750W Gold ATX 3.x supply make a sensible platform. Choose a high-airflow case with effective intake and exhaust fans.

For a CK3-first buyer, the RX 9070 is attractive when its price is near or below the RTX 5070’s: aggregate graphics testing favors it for native raster performance, and it has 16GB of VRAM versus 12GB on the RTX 5070. That is not a CK3-specific performance result. Choose Nvidia instead if DLSS, frame generation, ray tracing, CUDA software or its wider creator and AI ecosystem matters to you. Compare current prices rather than assuming launch prices remain available.

Balanced 4K: buy a stronger GPU for the rest of your library

A 4K system makes more sense when CK3 is only one of the games you play. Target a Ryzen 7 9800X3D-class CPU, 32GB DDR5 (or 64GB for heavy mods and multitasking), 2TB or more of NVMe storage, and an RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti. Use an 850W Gold ATX 3.x supply as a starting target, then check the exact card maker’s recommendation, dimensions and power connections. Pick a case that fits the GPU and cooler without restricting airflow.

  • Dell Services: 1 Year Onsite Service provides support when and where you need it. Dell will come to your home, office, or location of choice, if an issue covered by Limited Hardware Warranty cannot be resolved remotely.

Tom’s Hardware’s aggregate 4K Ultra GPU results list 65.8 fps for the RX 9070 XT and 68.6 fps for the RTX 5070 Ti; this is a collection of graphics tests, not a CK3 benchmark. The same comparison lists launch prices of $599.99 and $749.99, which should not be mistaken for current street prices. At similar real-world prices, choose by game performance, VRAM, power and software features—not brand loyalty.

High-end 4K: justify it with more than CK3

An RTX 5080-class card can suit high-refresh 4K, ray tracing or demanding AAA games, and GPU compute may justify a higher-end card for work. Pair it with a capable gaming CPU, 64GB RAM if your broader workload needs it, 2–4TB of NVMe storage, premium cooling and an 850W–1000W Gold or Platinum ATX 3.x supply sized for the specific GPU. A flagship card is not required to play CK3.

What Steam’s requirements do—and do not—tell you

Steam lists Windows 10 Home 64-bit as the minimum operating system, and Windows 10 Home 64-bit or Windows 11 as recommended. Its listed hardware requirements are the game’s official baseline, not a target for comfortable play with a modern operating system, multiple background apps, a large mod setup or a mature campaign.

Target CPU Memory Graphics What it means
Steam minimum Intel Core i5-750 or AMD FX 4300 8GB GeForce GTX 660, Radeon HD 7870, Intel Arc A310, Intel Iris Plus G7 or Radeon Vega 11 Official minimum specification; not a practical new-build recommendation
Steam recommended Intel Core i5-8400 or Ryzen 5 1600X 16GB GeForce GTX 970, Radeon RX 480 or Intel Arc A580 Official recommended specification, including 20GB storage
Practical new 1080p build Modern six-core 16GB baseline; 32GB preferred Current entry-level or midrange GPU A more useful starting point for a new Windows 11-era PC
Long campaigns or heavy mods Modern fast eight-core preferred 32GB; consider 64GB for very large mod setups or multitasking Match to resolution and other games More CPU and memory headroom, not a guarantee of faster simulation
4K mixed gaming Fast gaming CPU 32GB; 64GB for broader workloads RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti-class, depending on games and price Choose the GPU for 4K games generally, not for CK3 alone

Steam’s Crusader Kings III store page is the authoritative reference for its published operating-system and hardware requirements. The practical targets above are recommendations for buyers, not official specifications.

Why CPU performance affects a long CK3 campaign

CK3 has two different performance questions: how smoothly the game renders, and how quickly time advances in the simulation. The map, portraits, shadows, interface and chosen resolution contribute to graphics load. Meanwhile, the game processes characters, relationships, succession, wars, AI decisions and events. As a campaign develops, its larger world and cast can make simulation performance more demanding.

A fast six-core CPU is adequate for a budget system and ordinary campaigns. For long saves, large realms, fast game speed, substantial mods or broader gaming longevity, an eight-core gaming CPU is the better target. Strong per-thread performance and sustained boost behavior matter; so do cooling and stable power limits. Twelve to sixteen cores are not necessary for CK3 alone, though streaming, video work, compiling and virtual machines can use them.

It is too broad to say CK3 is always CPU-bound. At 1080p, a powerful graphics card may leave the CPU as the practical limit; at 4K and high visual settings, the GPU can become the limit. A stronger graphics card cannot fix a slow late-game simulation when the GPU is underused and CPU threads are saturated. No exact CK3 frame rate or fastest CK3 processor is claimed here: that would require repeatable tests using specified game versions, saves, settings and mod states.

How much RAM and storage should you buy?

RAM: 32GB is the strongest default

  • 16GB: A reasonable baseline for a standard CK3 build, but less comfortable when Windows, a browser, Discord, DLC and mods are all in use.
  • 32GB: The recommended choice for most new builds. It gives the game and other applications more room without treating an unmodded CK3 installation as if it needs 64GB.
  • 64GB: Consider it for major total conversions, very large mod collections, simultaneous productivity work or other memory-heavy simulations.

Use two matched DIMMs—typically 2×16GB for 32GB—to enable dual-channel operation. Check your motherboard’s memory compatibility information and confirm stability with the selected DDR5 kit; a speed rating on the box does not guarantee every CPU-and-board combination will run it reliably.

SSD: capacity and load convenience

Install CK3 on an NVMe SSD. Compared with an older hard drive, SSD storage makes loading, saving and accessing game content less frustrating; it should not be assumed to increase late-game simulation speed. A 1TB drive is a practical floor for a budget system, while 2TB is a better default for CK3, DLC, Workshop content and other games. Choose 4TB if your library and mod collection warrant the extra space.

1080p, 1440p or 4K?

  • 1080p: The affordable target. A modest current GPU is generally a sensible match, leaving more of the budget for CPU quality and memory.
  • 1440p: A strong compromise for a new gaming PC: it gives the GPU more work than 1080p while remaining less demanding than 4K. It is often the most versatile choice for a mixed game library.
  • 4K: The sharper map and interface can be appealing, but the GPU load rises and some players may prefer larger interface scaling. Resolution and UI readability are separate settings; 4K is not automatically more comfortable.

Rendered frame rate and simulation speed are separate. A high-refresh monitor can display frames more quickly, but it does not guarantee that a late-game calendar advances at the same perceived rate.

AMD Radeon or Nvidia GeForce?

For CK3 itself, neither brand offers a special requirement. The choice is about graphics performance in your other games, software and price.

  • Favor Radeon when native raster performance and 16GB of VRAM are priorities and the comparable RX 9070-series card is meaningfully cheaper. AMD lists the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT with 16GB of GDDR6; its launch suggested prices were $549 and $599 respectively. Those launch figures are not current price guarantees.
  • Favor GeForce when DLSS, frame generation, ray tracing, CUDA-dependent software, or Nvidia’s creator and AI features justify the price. Nvidia’s announced RTX 5070 has 12GB GDDR7, while the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080 have 16GB; their listed launch prices were $549, $749 and $999, respectively, not guaranteed current street prices.

DLSS 4 support on Nvidia cards and FSR 4 support on AMD’s RX 9070 series matter in supported games, but should not be treated as CK3 necessities. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 GPU hierarchy provides aggregate comparisons, not results from CK3 alone: GPU hierarchy and test results. For the announced product specifications, see AMD’s RDNA 4 announcement and Nvidia’s RTX 50-series announcement.

Check prices before choosing a graphics card

Launch prices and actual US listings can diverge. PC Gamer’s mid-August 2026 price watch reported roughly $650 for an RX 9070, about $720 for one RX 9070 XT model, approximately $790–$800 for RTX 5070 cards, and about $1,030 for an RTX 5070 Ti listing. These are dated examples, not market averages or enduring price recommendations. Check current stock and prices before buying; PC Gamer’s graphics-card price watch documents how listings change. Tom’s Hardware has also reported elevated current-generation GPU prices: current GPU pricing context.

Buying a prebuilt PC

A prebuilt can be a good choice if the component details are transparent and the parts are serviceable. Check the listing or ask the seller for each of these specifics before paying:

  • Exact CPU and graphics card model numbers—not just “Core i7” or “RTX graphics.”
  • At least 16GB RAM, preferably 32GB, installed as two matched DIMMs rather than one stick.
  • A named NVMe SSD, with enough capacity for your library.
  • The power-supply make and model, or at minimum a reputable platform with suitable capacity for the exact GPU.
  • CPU cooling and case airflow adequate for sustained use.
  • Standard, upgradeable components and no proprietary board or power connections that would make ordinary upgrades difficult.

Be cautious of a listing that says only “16GB gaming RAM” or gives no exact GPU model: those descriptions conceal important differences in capability and upgrade options.

Upgrading an existing PC

  1. Address CPU limits first. If the processor is old or late-game simulation speed is the problem, a faster compatible CPU is more relevant than an extravagant GPU. Check motherboard support and cooling before buying.
  2. Move beyond 8GB RAM. If the system has 8GB or is under memory pressure, add capacity; 32GB is the preferred target for mods and multitasking. Confirm that the board supports the kit and use matched modules where possible.
  3. Replace a hard drive with an SSD. This improves loading, saving and content access, though not necessarily simulation speed.
  4. Upgrade the GPU for pixels and other games. A graphics-card upgrade is most useful when moving to 1440p or 4K, or when your other games are graphics-heavy.

For a new build, AM5 with DDR5 provides a current platform choice; an older DDR4 system may still be worth upgrading if you already own compatible parts or find a substantially discounted CPU-and-motherboard combination. Future CPU support and availability depend on motherboard BIOS support and processor supply, so platform longevity is not a guarantee.

Laptops and integrated graphics need separate expectations

Do not assume a laptop with the same GPU name performs like its desktop counterpart. Laptop power limits, cooling and whether it can sustain performance while plugged in all matter. Before buying, check the laptop’s memory capacity and whether RAM is soldered, available SSD expansion, screen resolution, and cooling behavior. A modern integrated GPU may launch CK3 at low or medium settings, but shared memory and laptop power limits make results variable; it is not a 4K recommendation.

Diagnosing slow campaigns or poor performance

Late-game slowdown can come from simulation load, a large character or realm count, a mod’s scripting overhead, background applications, thermal throttling, memory pressure, a damaged or unusually large save, or incompatibility between a mod and the game version. Hardware is not the only possible cause.

  1. Establish a clean comparison: try an unmodded save, then compare it with the affected modded save. Check that each mod supports your installed game version.
  2. Compare campaign stages: observe an early-game save and a mature campaign at the same game speed and settings. Note whether the problem is low rendered FPS, slow calendar progression, or both.
  3. Watch system use: check GPU utilization, per-core CPU activity, RAM use, temperatures and clock speeds while the slowdown occurs. Low GPU use alongside a saturated CPU thread can point away from the graphics card.
  4. Separate symptoms: if FPS is poor at high resolution, investigate GPU load and graphics settings; if time advances slowly while GPU use is low, prioritize simulation, CPU, mod and thermal checks.

A demanding mod can add mechanics, characters, provinces or events and may conflict with other content. If only one modded save is affected, test compatibility and the save before spending money on hardware.
