On May 16, 2025, Epic Games said Apple had blocked a Fortnite submission intended for the U.S. App Store and the Epic Games Store for iOS in the European Union. Apple disputed that account: it said it had asked Epic Sweden to submit a version without the U.S. storefront and denied removing Fortnite’s live version from alternative European marketplaces. Fortnite later returned to Apple’s App Store in most regions in May 2026; Epic identifies Australia as an exception.
What Epic said Apple did
Epic said Apple blocked its latest Fortnite submission, stopping the game from launching on the U.S. App Store and preventing the update from being released through the Epic Games Store for iOS in the EU. Epic said the result was that Fortnite would be offline worldwide on iOS. That was Epic’s account of the consequences, not an uncontested finding that Apple had removed the game from every iOS distribution channel. TechCrunch’s May 16, 2025 report covered both the allegation and Apple’s response.
Apple’s response was narrower
Apple said it asked Epic Sweden to resubmit the update without the U.S. App Store storefront, saying that would avoid affecting Fortnite in other regions. Apple also denied taking action to remove the live version of Fortnite from alternative European marketplaces. The disagreement was therefore about the handling and reach of Epic’s submission, not simply whether Apple had deleted Fortnite everywhere. CBS News reported Apple’s response; Apple’s letter is available here.
How the May 2025 submission unfolded
- May 9: Epic attempted to resubmit Fortnite to the U.S. App Store after a major court development concerning Apple’s App Store payment practices. The submission reportedly remained pending for about a week.
- Withdrawal: Epic withdrew that submission because Fortnite’s weekly content updates need to be coordinated across platforms.
- May 14: Epic submitted another version with updated content, according to GameSpot’s timeline.
- May 16: Epic publicly said Apple had blocked the submission.
The available reporting describes a pending submission, a withdrawal, a new submission, and a dispute over what Apple required next. It does not establish that Apple formally rejected the binary. Calling the event a rejection goes beyond what those accounts show.

Why the U.S. and EU routes were different
In the United States, Epic was seeking a return through Apple’s ordinary App Store. In the EU, Epic had an alternative route: its own iOS marketplace, operating under the region’s rules for alternative app marketplaces. Those routes were related but not interchangeable. A disagreement over a submission associated with Epic Sweden could affect whether an updated build was usable through Epic’s European store, even as Apple said it had not removed the version already available there.
Alternative marketplaces are regional, not a general permission to install apps from anywhere. Their availability, installation requirements, and ability to deliver a particular update depend on location and the applicable platform rules.

How the earlier Epic–Apple dispute set the stage
In August 2020, Epic added a payment option in Fortnite that bypassed Apple’s in-app-purchase system. Apple removed Fortnite from its App Store, and Epic sued, challenging Apple’s control over iOS distribution and payments. The dispute has involved developer agreements, commissions, payment restrictions, alternative distribution, and court-ordered remedies—not just a single fee percentage. The Supreme Court docket appendix recounts the earlier conflict and the payment mechanism at its center.
Epic viewed its 2025 App Store submission as a test of Apple’s compliance with court developments concerning external payments and related terms. The handling of the submission then became another part of the continuing dispute. That context does not establish that a court ordered Apple to approve Fortnite itself.

Fortnite’s iPhone and iPad status now
Epic announced on May 19, 2026, that Fortnite had returned to Apple’s App Store around the world, with Australia excluded. Epic said it had not yet returned to the Australian App Store amid an unresolved dispute over payment terms and court orders. Epic’s return announcement describes that development.

What to check before installing or updating
- Confirm your region: App Store availability and alternative marketplaces differ by country. Moving out of an eligible region can affect new installations and updates, as Epic explains on its regional availability page.
- Use an official route: App Store installation is different from installing through Epic Games Store or AltStore PAL. Epic says it does not officially support arbitrary third-party installation software; avoid unofficial installers, modified app packages, or sites asking for Apple credentials.
- Keep the game current: An older installation is not a guarantee of continued access. Fortnite needs current updates to connect to the live game, and an installation that cannot update may stop working.
- Check device-specific instructions: Epic’s support details can differ by marketplace and device, so follow the current instructions for your iPhone or iPad rather than assuming every route works on both.
