The best PC for War Thunder depends on your display and settings. For 1080p, a Ryzen 5 9600X, 32GB of DDR5 and a Radeon RX 9060 XT-class GPU is a sensible starting point. For 4K, spend more on the graphics card: a Radeon RX 9070 XT-class system is a strong rasterized option, while NVIDIA becomes more compelling if you want ray tracing, DLSS or NVIDIA’s encoding features.

These are target-based recommendations, not promises of a fixed frame rate. Gaijin publishes compatibility requirements, but not a tested FPS table for 1080p, 1440p or 4K.

Quick recommendations

Build Target CPU GPU Memory Best for
Value 1080p 1080p, 60–100Hz Ryzen 5 9600X Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB 32GB DDR5 Affordable high-quality play
Longer-lived 1080p 1080p, 60–144Hz Ryzen 5 9600X Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB 32GB DDR5 New builds and broader game libraries
High-refresh 1080p 1080p, 144Hz or faster Ryzen 7 9800X3D RX 9060 XT 16GB or similar 32GB DDR5 Competitive play and consistent frame times
Balanced 4K 4K, 60–120Hz Ryzen 5 9600X or Ryzen 7 9800X3D Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB 32GB DDR5 High-quality native or upscaled 4K
Enthusiast 4K 4K, high refresh, ray tracing or VR Ryzen 7 9800X3D-class RTX 5080-class or equivalent 32GB–64GB DDR5 Ray tracing, VR and demanding games beyond War Thunder

The table describes sensible system classes rather than guaranteed FPS results. Performance varies with the game build, driver, renderer, map, settings, resolution scaling and whether the scene is CPU- or GPU-limited.

What PC does War Thunder officially require?

Gaijin’s official requirements list DirectX 11-level graphics hardware such as the GeForce GTX 1060 and Radeon RX 570 in the higher requirement tier, with 720p identified among the supported resolutions. The guidance also expects reasonably current proprietary graphics drivers.

#1 Best Overall
msi Codex Z2 Gaming Desktop, AMD R7-8700F, RTX 5070, 32GB DDR5, 2TB SSD
  • POWERHOUSE 8-CORE GAMING PERFORMANCE — Driven by the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F with 8 cores and 16 threads, boosting up to 5.0 GHz for smooth, responsive gameplay and the ability to handle AAA titles, streaming, and background tasks all at once
  • NEXT-GEN BLACKWELL ARCHITECTURE — The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 is powered by NVIDIA's cutting-edge Blackwell GPU architecture, delivering a massive generational leap in rasterization and ray tracing performance so you can experience your games the way they were meant to be played.
  • Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. *MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.
  • Cool While Gaming: In conjunction with an ARGB fan Air Cooler, the Codex R2 features four system cooling fans; three in the front and one in the rear to pull in cool air and push heat out of the PC.
  • Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.

That information establishes compatibility, not a guaranteed 60Hz, 144Hz or 4K experience. The Steam listing uses different DirectX wording, so the safest interpretation is that the game has multiple rendering paths and that neither requirements page is a complete performance specification.

Best value 1080p build

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 9600X
  • Cooler: Quality single-tower air cooler
  • Motherboard: B650 or current AM5 equivalent with Ryzen 9000 BIOS support
  • Memory: 32GB DDR5-6000 in a matched 2×16GB kit
  • GPU: Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB
  • Storage: 1TB NVMe SSD minimum; 2TB preferred
  • PSU: Quality 650W unit
  • Case: Mesh-front case with at least two intake fans and one exhaust fan

The Ryzen 5 9600X is a six-core, 12-thread Zen 5 processor with boost speeds up to 5.4GHz and a 65W default TDP. It does not include a bundled cooler, so budget for one. A B650 board is usually enough; pay more for connectivity, Wi-Fi, storage slots or rear I/O rather than gaming-branded FPS claims.

AMD announced the RX 9060 XT at $299 for 8GB and $349 for 16GB, but those are launch/reference price signals, not guaranteed current retail prices. The 8GB card is adequate for a dedicated 1080p system. Choose 16GB when the price gap is reasonable or when the PC will also run newer games with larger texture requirements.

This combination is already far beyond the official GTX 1060/RX 570-class guidance. Spending substantially more on a flagship GPU makes little sense for a 1080p/60 player unless the PC will also run more demanding games.

Best high-refresh 1080p build

  • CPU: Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • Cooler: Strong dual-tower air cooler or 240mm-class liquid cooler
  • Motherboard: B650, B850 or X870 AM5 board chosen for features
  • Memory: 32GB DDR5-6000
  • GPU: RX 9060 XT 16GB, RX 9070, RTX 5070-class or similarly priced card
  • Storage: 2TB NVMe SSD
  • PSU: Quality 750W unit

At 1080p and high refresh rates, the processor can become the limiting component in dense ground battles and other CPU-sensitive scenes. A faster gaming CPU can improve frame-time consistency, but it does not guarantee a particular War Thunder FPS figure. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is appropriate when you own a 144Hz, 165Hz or faster monitor, stream or record while playing, or want a premium AM5 gaming platform.

Do not buy an X3D processor solely because it is the most expensive gaming option. For a 1080p/60 system, the Ryzen 5 9600X leaves more money for a better monitor, SSD, quieter cooling or future upgrades.

The sensible 1440p middle ground

Although the main targets here are 1080p and 4K, 1440p is often the best compromise. Pair the Ryzen 5 9600X or Ryzen 7 9800X3D with an RX 9060 XT 16GB, RX 9070 or comparable NVIDIA card, 32GB of DDR5 and a 144Hz monitor. It provides more image clarity than 1080p without making the GPU work as hard as native 4K.

Choose the CPU according to refresh rate: the 9600X is sensible for ordinary play, while the 9800X3D is easier to justify at very high refresh rates or with simultaneous recording and other CPU-heavy work.

Best balanced 4K build

  • CPU: Ryzen 5 9600X for a primarily GPU-limited system, or Ryzen 7 9800X3D for premium gaming and high refresh
  • Cooler: Quality dual-tower air cooler or 240mm/280mm liquid cooler
  • Motherboard: B650, B850 or X870 AM5 board with the required connectivity
  • Memory: 32GB DDR5-6000; 64GB is optional for heavy multitasking or recording
  • GPU: Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB
  • Storage: 2TB NVMe SSD
  • PSU: 750W quality unit or the exact board-partner recommendation
  • Case: High-airflow chassis with adequate GPU clearance

The RX 9070 XT has 16GB of GDDR6, a 256-bit memory interface and 304W total board power. AMD lists a 750W recommended power supply and two 8-pin power connectors. Check the exact card’s length, thickness and connector arrangement before buying.

This is a strong 4K raster-focused configuration without pretending that an enthusiast flagship is required. Test native 4K first. If the GPU is the limit, a quality upscaling mode can improve performance while retaining much of the image quality. “4K with upscaling” is not the same target as native 4K, so label it accurately.

Enthusiast 4K, ray tracing and VR

For a 4K high-refresh monitor, ray tracing, VR or demanding games beyond War Thunder, use a Ryzen 7 9800X3D-class CPU, 32GB or 64GB of DDR5, a 2TB or 4TB NVMe SSD and a high-end GPU such as an RTX 5080-class model or equivalent. Use an 850W-class PSU only when the specific graphics card manufacturer recommends it; size the supply from the exact model.

This tier is optional for War Thunder. A flagship GPU can deliver diminishing returns if the game is CPU-limited, the display is 60Hz, or ray tracing and supersampling are disabled. It is justified by the broader workload, not by the game’s basic requirements.

NVIDIA is worth considering when you specifically want ray tracing, DLSS, NVIDIA encoding, Broadcast features or CUDA-related software. NVIDIA’s RTX 50-series adds newer Blackwell features, Tensor Cores, RT Cores and GDDR7 on higher models. Those features do not automatically make an NVIDIA card the better purchase for ordinary rasterized play; compare current street prices and your actual settings.

AMD versus NVIDIA for War Thunder

Priority What to evaluate
Native rasterized play Actual price, GPU performance, VRAM, power and cooler quality
Ray tracing RT performance and the quality of the available upscaling mode
Upscaling and frame generation Image quality, artifacts and latency—not just displayed FPS
Recording and streaming Hardware encoder support and software compatibility
VR Stable frame times, headset resolution, VRAM and driver behavior
Long-term flexibility 16GB-class VRAM is preferable for a new premium build

There is no universal AMD-versus-NVIDIA winner for this game. AMD’s RX 9060 XT is attractive for value-oriented 1080p systems, while the RX 9070 XT is a logical 16GB 4K raster option. NVIDIA can justify its price when its software and ray-tracing features matter to you.

Memory, storage and platform choices

Memory

Use 32GB as the default. 16GB is an entry point, but leaves less room for browsers, recording software and newer games. Choose 64GB for heavy multitasking, VR, recording, simulation workloads or a broader gaming-and-creation PC. Two matched modules are generally easier to run than four; enable EXPO after confirming stability.

Storage

A 1TB NVMe SSD is the minimum sensible capacity for a dedicated budget system, while 2TB is more comfortable for a modern library. An SSD improves loading and desktop responsiveness; it does not directly guarantee higher FPS.

  • Main board: MSI B550M-A PRO motherboard provides reliable performance and stability
  • GPU: Geforce RTX 5060 8GB GDDR7 Graphics Cards (Brand may vary) Support DLSS 4 multi frame generation, ray tracing, and Reflex 2 delay optimization
  • RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz (16GB*2) SSD: 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe
  • Power supply: 650W (80plus bronze) certified for energy efficiency and stable performance

Motherboard and AM5

AM5 is a practical foundation for a new gaming system because it supports options ranging from the Ryzen 5 9600X to gaming-focused Ryzen 7 processors. Treat its upgrade path as headroom, not a promise about future products. Select the motherboard for BIOS support, M.2 slots, Wi-Fi, USB, networking and expansion needs.

Settings that change the hardware recommendation

“Ultra” is not one universal performance target. Distinguish these modes:

  • Native rendering: The cleanest baseline for image quality and latency.
  • Upscaling: Useful when the GPU is limiting, especially at 4K.
  • Frame generation: Can raise displayed FPS, but generated frames do not replace native input responsiveness. Evaluate latency and artifacts separately.
  • Ray tracing: Can make an otherwise easy configuration substantially more GPU-intensive.
  • SSAA or supersampling: May render internally above the output resolution and can be more demanding than expected.
  • VSync and frame caps: Useful for smoothness, power and noise control, but disable them when measuring uncapped performance.

Gaijin has introduced modern rendering features including ray tracing and AMD FSR-related technologies. The exact options and menu labels can change between game versions, so use the current in-game settings rather than relying on an old guide.

How to test your own PC

  1. Update Windows and install a current graphics driver.
  2. Record the game version, driver version, renderer, resolution, preset and display mode.
  3. Disable VSync and frame caps when measuring maximum performance.
  4. Measure average FPS and 1% lows, not average FPS alone.
  5. Test a representative air battle and a dense ground battle.
  6. Repeat the test after changing resolution, ray tracing, anti-aliasing, shadows, terrain, vegetation, upscaling and frame generation.

War Thunder has had a built-in “Tank Battle (CPU)” benchmark referenced in historical testing, including a Principled Technologies study. That study used an older game version, so its results are not current buying benchmarks. A practical diagnosis is simple: if lowering resolution barely changes performance, the CPU or game engine is likely limiting you; if GPU utilization is high and resolution changes performance substantially, prioritize the graphics card or reduce GPU-heavy settings.

Upgrade paths and common mistakes

Already own an AM4 PC?

A compatible Ryzen 5000 upgrade and a modern GPU may be better value than replacing the whole system. Check your exact motherboard, BIOS support and DDR4 compatibility first. Do not assume an AM4 processor can be installed on an AM5 board or vice versa.

Buying used

Used GTX 1060, RX 570, RTX 2060 or RX 6600-class cards can make sense for a strict 1080p budget, but inspect temperatures, fan noise, power connectors, physical damage and warranty status. Ask about mining use and test the card under load before paying. Set a price ceiling that reflects its age and the lack of warranty.

Compatibility checklist

  • Confirm motherboard BIOS support for the selected CPU.
  • Check GPU length, thickness and power connectors against the case.
  • Check cooler height or radiator clearance, including memory clearance.
  • Use a reputable PSU with adequate continuous wattage and native connectors.
  • Confirm that two-DIMM memory is on the motherboard’s compatibility list where possible.
  • Enable EXPO only after the system boots reliably, then test stability.
  • Do not treat a laptop GPU as equivalent to a desktop card with the same name; laptop power limits and cooling vary substantially.

Bottom line

For most players, the best value is a Ryzen 5 9600X, 32GB of DDR5, an RX 9060 XT—preferably 16GB if the price difference is modest—and a 1TB or 2TB NVMe SSD. Choose the Ryzen 7 9800X3D when high-refresh 1080p, recording, streaming or CPU-sensitive frame-time consistency matters. For 4K, put the budget into a 16GB-class GPU such as the RX 9070 XT, and move to NVIDIA when ray tracing, DLSS or NVIDIA’s software ecosystem is central to the purchase.
