There is no single best gem for every weapon and armor piece: a gem’s effect depends on the game, equipment slot, grade, and the build you are using. In Diablo II, for example, a ruby adds fire damage in a weapon, fire resistance in a shield, and maximum life in a helm or armor. Check the rules for your game and the specific item before socketing.
How to choose the best gem
Start with the game and version, then check the gem’s effect for the exact slot. A gem that improves weapon damage may instead add a resistance or defensive stat in armor. Once you know the slot-specific effect, choose for the stat your build needs—not for a universal ranking.

- Equipment destination: Confirm whether the item is a weapon, shield, armor piece, or another slot.
- Build goal: Compare the available damage type, resistance, health or resource bonus, and utility against what your character needs.
- Grade and compatibility: Check the gem tier, socket availability, and any item or character requirements.
- Progression and permanence: Find out how gems are upgraded, whether their effects stack, and whether you can remove one after socketing.
Diablo II: gem effects change by item slot
Blizzard’s official Arreat Summit reference for socketed items and gems lists five gem grades—chipped, flawed, standard, flawless, and perfect—and states, “Higher grades of gems have stronger effects.” The listed values vary by grade, so use the table on the official reference for the exact effect rather than assuming every grade gives the same bonus.

Pick for the slot and the stat you need
For a weapon, compare the gem’s offensive effect with your build; for a shield, consider whether a listed resistance or other defense addresses a real weakness; for a helm or armor, weigh its listed stat against your character’s needs. The table names the effects, not a universal best choice. The right option depends on the grade, item, and build.

Upgrade and socket carefully
The official reference describes upgrading gems through a Gem Shrine or Horadric Cube, including a recipe that transmutes three gems of one type into a higher quality. It also says that socketed gems cannot be removed. In a sword, three gems of the same type provide the bonuses of all three; the first gem determines the weapon’s color. Treat socketing as a lasting choice and check the exact item and recipe requirements in the reference before committing valuable gems.
Other games use different gem systems

Archlight Online
The Archlight Online Wiki’s Gems page, last modified May 21, 2023, describes gems with two possible effects and up to eight gem slots on helmets, armor, legs, boots, and weapons. It says slots are opened with Regrade Keys and gems are made through Jewelcrafting. Its page-reported equipment read order is head, armor, right-side weapon, left-side weapon, legs, then feet, with higher rolls advised earlier.

It lists effects including health, mana, damage, attack speed, cooldown reduction, resistance, rune effectiveness, essence find, and loot luck. These are mechanics reported on a 2023 wiki page, not a verified current-build recommendation; check current in-game tooltips before choosing gems.

Enshrouded and other games
The Official Enshrouded Wiki’s Gems page search result says gems are inserted into weapons at Gem Forges and can be upgraded only to certain levels per biome. That limited information is not enough to rank gems or recommend a specific build.
For Perfect World, a database search result reports that gem effects can differ between weapons and armor, and that equipment grade and character level are separate compatibility checks. It gives Average Garnet Shard as an example: Physical Attack +16 in a weapon and Physical Defence +26 in armor, requiring grade 5 equipment. The underlying page was not accessible for inspection, so treat those figures as unverified here and confirm them in the game or its current documentation before relying on them.

Before you socket a gem
- Identify the game and version. Look up that game’s current gem rules; similarly named gems need not share effects across titles.
- Check the destination item. Read the effect for that specific weapon, armor, shield, or other slot.
- Confirm grade and requirements. Verify the gem tier, socket count, and any equipment or character restrictions.
- Compare the effect with your build. Choose the damage, defense, resource, or utility stat that serves your goal.
- Check upgrading and removal rules. Confirm the materials or process needed to improve a gem and whether socketing can be reversed.
