Best Ghost Blog Alternatives in 2026

For most publishers, the best Ghost alternative depends on what you are building: choose beehiiv for a newsletter-led media business, WordPress.com for the broadest managed content-management system, Substack for fast publishing and built-in discovery, Webflow for design control, and Medium for immediate low-maintenance reach.

Ghost remains strong for an owned publication with memberships and newsletters, but the alternatives differ materially in audience discovery, customization, maintenance, migration, and revenue economics. Use the comparison and decision guide below before moving an existing Ghost site.

1. Identify the publishing model

  • Newsletter as the product: prioritize email growth loops, referrals, recommendations, paid subscriptions, advertising and analytics. beehiiv is designed around this model.
  • Website or publication as the product: prioritize information architecture, search visibility, integrations, multiple content types and extensibility. WordPress.com is the broadest managed fit.
  • Writer-led subscription: prioritize a fast writing workflow and discovery over bespoke design. Substack is the simplest match.
  • Brand experience: prioritize layout, art direction and structured content presentation. Webflow is the strongest design-led choice.
  • Reach experiment: prioritize publishing immediately to an existing network. Medium minimizes setup.

2. Set your ownership requirement

A hosted platform handles infrastructure but makes you dependent on its account rules, export formats and URL structure. Before migrating, confirm that you can export posts, subscribers or members, media, and any data needed to recreate analytics. A platform that lets you export articles but not your audience may not satisfy an ownership-first strategy.

3. Price the whole stack

Compare more than the headline subscription. Include payment processing, a separate email provider, memberships, analytics, domain registration, premium templates, migration work and any revenue share. A low monthly fee can be expensive if you must bolt on the capabilities that Ghost provided in one place.

beehiiv: best for a newsletter-first publication

Choose beehiiv when email is the primary distribution channel and the website supports the newsletter rather than the other way around. Its Launch plan is documented as free forever, with no credit card required, up to 2,500 subscribers and unlimited email sends. The same plan description includes a hosted website and podcast tools, recommendations, referral programs, paid subscriptions and access to a native ad network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where beehiiv is stronger than Ghost

  • Growth loops: recommendations and referral programs are central to the acquisition model, so they can be easier to operate than assembling equivalent workflows yourself.
  • Newsletter monetization: paid subscriptions and native advertising are first-class features. beehiiv states that it takes 0% of paid subscription revenue; Stripe or another payment processor still charges its own fee.
  • Subscriber-focused analytics: the product is organized around email performance and list growth, which suits a media brand measured by opens, clicks, referrals and paid conversion.
  • Low initial risk: the free tier lets a small publication validate its format before paying for higher subscriber limits.

Where Ghost remains a better fit

Ghost is usually the better choice when the public website needs highly bespoke templates, a deep archive, complex navigation or a publication experience that is not subordinate to email. beehiiv can host a website, but a design-led or taxonomy-heavy site may require compromises or additional services.

Check before switching

Map the subscriber threshold to your growth forecast and identify the paid tier you would reach after the free allowance. Confirm how your existing Ghost members, tags, custom fields, automations, historical analytics and domain settings will transfer; an article import alone does not recreate a newsletter operation.

WordPress.com: best broad managed CMS alternative

WordPress.com is the most versatile choice when a blog may become a full publication, resource library, community site or business website. It is fully hosted: hosting, security, backups and updates are managed for you. Its pricing information lists more than 60,000 plugins, giving a much wider extension surface than a narrowly newsletter-focused service.

For a managed WordPress route, Antihost offers isolated resources, one-click staging, free migration, backups and free SSL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you get

  • The free version includes hosting, automatic updates, unlimited pages and posts, unlimited users and seven-day traffic statistics.
  • Paid plans can add capabilities such as expanded design, commerce, payments, SEO controls or plugin access; the exact set depends on the plan.
  • Import tooling supports migration from multiple publishing platforms, which makes it practical for an existing Ghost site.
  • The theme and plugin ecosystem can support editorial workflows, memberships, forms, stores, forums and specialized content types.

Trade-offs

Flexibility creates decisions. You must evaluate themes, plugins, update compatibility, permissions, backups, performance and which features belong to your chosen plan. Managed hosting removes server administration, but it does not remove the need to govern the site architecture. A small personal blog may find the interface heavier than Ghost, while a growing publication can benefit from the additional headroom.

Best use case

Select WordPress.com when you want one managed home for articles plus other site functions and you value migration options and integrations more than the simplest possible writing screen.

Substack: best for speed and built-in discovery

Substack combines a publishing editor, email delivery, subscriptions and a network of readers. Its import documentation says posts can be brought in from WordPress, Ghost, Medium, Beehiiv, Mailchimp, Tumblr, Webflow and other services. That makes it one of the more straightforward destinations for a Ghost newsletter or essay archive.

Why writers choose it

  • Fast launch: you can publish and send email without configuring hosting, a theme system or a separate newsletter service.
  • Network effects: recommendations and platform discovery can expose a new publication to readers who are already browsing there.
  • Simple paid subscriptions: the core workflow is easy to understand for a writer who wants to test membership revenue quickly.

The economic and ownership cost

The 2026 comparison reports a 10% share of paid subscription revenue. At small scale, that may be a reasonable exchange for simplicity and discovery; at larger scale, calculate the annual amount and compare it with a fixed software bill. You also give up some control over presentation, data relationships and the experience surrounding your email list. If owning the site and audience is a non-negotiable requirement, Substack is a poor fit even when its growth tools are attractive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best use case

Use Substack for a writer-led newsletter, commentary series or publication where reaching readers quickly matters more than a custom site, advanced content modeling or keeping every dollar of subscription revenue.

Webflow: best for visual and CMS control

Webflow is the design-led alternative. Its plans support custom domains, CMS collections, content APIs and scheduled publishing, so a designer can create a precise presentation while editors work with structured content.

Strengths

  • Visual control over typography, spacing, responsive layouts and branded landing pages.
  • CMS collections for repeatable structures such as articles, authors, reviews, game databases or guides.
  • APIs and scheduled publishing for teams that connect the site to other systems or run an editorial calendar.
  • A useful fit for an agency, studio or publication whose website is also a central brand portfolio.

What you must add

Webflow is not as newsletter-native as Ghost or beehiiv. Plan a separate service for email delivery, subscriber management, paid memberships or community access, then account for the integration and data flow between systems. The result can be visually excellent, but it is a multi-product stack rather than a single publishing appliance.

Best use case

Choose Webflow when the design system and CMS presentation are strategic and your team can operate separate email and membership tools.

Medium: best for low-maintenance distribution

Medium is the quickest route to publishing for a writer who wants an existing reading environment rather than a standalone site. Ghost’s alternatives guidance characterizes it as easy to start for a small blog when broader platform concerns are not important. Publishing is free, and eligible writers may earn through the Partner Program, whose rules can change.

When Medium makes sense

  • You are testing a topic or essay format and want to publish without building infrastructure.
  • You value an existing readership network more than a custom navigation system.
  • You do not need a sophisticated membership database, bespoke homepage or extensive integrations.

When to avoid it

Do not make Medium the primary home for a publication that needs a custom domain, an owned email list, detailed audience portability or a long-lived brand system. Its low setup effort is also its central limitation: fewer controls are available when you later want to redesign, integrate or move.

Squarespace and Wix: visual-builder alternatives

Squarespace

Squarespace suits a design-forward website or blog that benefits from polished templates and an all-in-one dashboard. It is less open-ended than a plugin-based CMS, but can reduce the number of services a small team must administer. Verify the current regional plan, storage, email product, commerce limits and transaction fees before signing up.

Wix

Wix targets beginners who want templates, a visual editor and an AI-assisted builder. It can be a practical home for a straightforward blog or website, especially when the owner does not want to manage a complex content model. Check plan-specific branding, storage, traffic, email and transaction limits: lower tiers may constrain customization or display platform branding.

Moving a Ghost site: a practical migration plan

Migration is feasible, but feature parity is not automatic. Posts may move while templates, URLs, memberships, analytics, images, email settings and automations still require deliberate work.

  1. Inventory what exists. List posts, pages, authors, tags, images, custom domains, redirects, members, paid subscriptions, email sequences, analytics and integrations. Mark each item as must keep, can rebuild or can retire.
  2. Choose the destination by publishing model. Use beehiiv for email-led growth, WordPress.com for a broad managed CMS, Substack for speed and discovery, Webflow for design control, or Medium for a reach experiment.
  3. Export from Ghost. Preserve the original content export, media files, member records and URL list before making changes. Keep a read-only copy so you can recover if an import is incomplete.
  4. Run the destination importer. Import support is available across Substack, WordPress.com and beehiiv, but the fields and supported objects differ. Test with a small sample first and inspect formatting, images, authors, dates and tags.
  5. Rebuild the information architecture. Recreate navigation, categories, author pages, homepage sections, templates and structured content. Do not assume a Ghost theme has an equivalent in the new system.
  6. Map URLs and redirects. Create a spreadsheet pairing every important old URL with its new location. Redirect changed slugs and verify that canonical links, feeds and sitemap entries use the new domain structure.
  7. Reconnect email and membership workflows. Confirm consent status, subscriber segments, sending domains, authentication records, welcome emails, paid plans and cancellation handling. Importing posts does not automatically recreate these settings.
  8. Test before changing DNS. Check mobile layouts, images, search, forms, paywalls, subscription checkout, unsubscribe links, RSS, analytics events and 404 behavior. Have another person review representative pages.
  9. Switch the domain and monitor. Lower DNS time-to-live in advance when possible, make the cutover, then watch search-console errors, delivery metrics, traffic, subscriptions and redirect logs for several weeks.

Which alternative gives you the most control?

For a managed service, WordPress.com generally offers the broadest combination of themes, plugins, content types and integrations. Webflow offers the most direct visual control over a designed site. beehiiv offers the most focused control over newsletter growth and monetization workflows. Substack and Medium intentionally trade customization for speed and distribution.

If “control” means owning every layer, remember that all of these hosted choices impose some platform dependency. Your practical safeguard is portability: maintain exports, your domain, a documented URL map, copies of media and a separate record of subscriber consent and billing relationships.

Decision guide

  • Pick beehiiv if your success metric is subscriber growth, paid email revenue, referrals or advertising and a simple hosted site is sufficient.
  • Pick WordPress.com if your publication may expand into multiple content types, integrations, commerce or a large plugin-supported site.
  • Pick Substack if you want to publish today, tap an existing discovery network and accept a reported 10% share of paid subscription revenue.
  • Pick Webflow if visual design, structured CMS content and brand presentation outweigh the convenience of native newsletter tools.
  • Pick Medium if immediate distribution matters and you can live without a custom, owned publication platform.
  • Pick Squarespace or Wix if you want a visual website builder and your requirements fit their plan-specific limits.
