For most sim racers, the Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB is the best all-round value pick for Assetto Corsa, Assetto Corsa Competizione (ACC), and Assetto Corsa EVO—if you do not specifically need Nvidia features or setup compatibility. Choose the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16GB for an Nvidia-focused build, and step up to an RTX 5080 for demanding VR, 4K, or triple 1440p. For ordinary single-screen 1080p or 1440p, the RX 9060 XT 16GB is a more sensible budget choice.

There is no universal winner: the original Assetto Corsa is much easier to run than ACC or EVO, while VR, triples, visual mods, resolution, CPU, and race conditions can change what “best” means. These are buying recommendations based on current positioning and specifications, not a complete set of independently verified Assetto Corsa benchmarks.

First, which Assetto Corsa do you mean?

The name can refer to three different PC games, and their GPU needs are not interchangeable.

Assetto Corsa (2014)

The original game has modest baseline demands. A midrange GPU can be enough for ordinary single-screen play, but Custom Shaders Patch (CSP), Pure or Sol, demanding weather and lighting, high-resolution textures, traffic, large AI grids, 4K, triples, and VR can raise the load substantially. A fast GPU may not fix slowdowns caused by the CPU, simulation settings, or a poorly optimized mod.

Assetto Corsa Competizione

ACC’s Steam recommended graphics level is a GTX 1070 8GB or Radeon RX 580 8GB. That is a compatibility and baseline requirement, not a promise of high-refresh performance at 1440p, in VR, or across three displays. ACC supports Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR, including triple-screen and VR modes, according to Kunos’ version 1.8 announcement. See the official Steam system requirements.

Assetto Corsa EVO

EVO is the most demanding forward-looking case for a new purchase, but it remains in Early Access, so performance and optimization can change. Steam lists a GTX 1070, RX 580, or Intel Arc A580 as minimum graphics options, and an RTX 2070, RX 6650 XT, or Arc A750 as recommended. The listed requirements also include 16GB RAM, DirectX 12, and an SSD; SteamVR, Oculus VR, and OpenXR are supported. These requirements do not guarantee high-refresh VR, 4K, or triple-screen performance. Check the EVO system requirements and EVO’s Steam page for the current Early Access status and development notes.

GPU recommendations by setup

Use this as a purchasing framework, not a benchmark chart: actual performance depends on the game version, settings, CPU, grid size, headset, runtime, and driver.

Use case GPU class to consider What to keep in mind
Original AC, single 1080p RX 9060 XT 16GB or RTX 5070-class For normal play, a faster card may bring little benefit if the CPU or mods are limiting performance.
Original AC, 1440p or high refresh RX 9070 or RTX 5070-class Heavy CSP/Pure settings, large grids, and high refresh can change the balance.
ACC, single 1440p RX 9070, RX 9070 XT, or RTX 5070 Ti Preset, grid size, and use of DLSS or FSR affect results.
EVO, single 1440p RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti A 16GB-class card offers useful memory headroom; Early Access performance may change.
3440×1440 ultrawide RX 9070/9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti Ultrawide rendering is more demanding than standard 2560×1440.
Triple 1080p RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti Three views increase GPU load; CPU limits and multi-view rendering also matter.
Triple 1440p RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti; RTX 5080 for more headroom About 11.1 million pixels are rendered across the displays, before other workload factors.
VR, value-oriented RX 9070 XT Confirm compatibility with your headset and runtime, then tune for stable frame times.
VR, Nvidia-feature preference RTX 5070 Ti Consider it for DLSS, Nvidia software, or a known setup-specific compatibility advantage—not because Nvidia is universally faster in VR.
Demanding 4K, VR, or triples RTX 5080; RTX 5090 for extreme headroom Higher price, power, and heat can outweigh the gains for ordinary single-screen play.

Best overall value: Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB

The RX 9070 XT is the broadest recommendation for a new sim-racing build aimed at 1440p, ultrawide, triples, or many VR configurations. Its 16GB of GDDR6 gives it useful capacity for demanding textures and higher-resolution rendering. AMD lists 304W board power and a 750W recommended PSU for the reference specification; check the requirements and dimensions of the exact board-partner card before buying. See AMD’s RX 9070 XT page.

This is a value recommendation, not a claim that it wins every Assetto Corsa benchmark. Street prices fluctuate, and the card is a weaker fit if you rely on Nvidia-specific software, DLSS, CUDA-related work, or a particular headset/runtime combination that you already know works better with Nvidia.

Best Nvidia option: GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16GB

The RTX 5070 Ti is the Nvidia alternative for high-refresh 1440p, triples, VR, or buyers who value Nvidia’s software and feature ecosystem. Its 16GB memory capacity also makes it a more comfortable long-term choice for demanding configurations than lower-memory options. Nvidia’s current RTX 50-series lineup includes DLSS 4 technologies, but feature availability and benefit depend on the game and implementation.

  • NVIDIA Ampere Streaming Multiprocessors
  • 2nd Generation RT Cores
  • 3rd Generation Tensor Cores
  • Powered by GeForce RTX 3050
  • Integrated with 6GB GDDR6 96-bit memory interface

Price is the key trade-off. Nvidia’s $749 US launch MSRP is historical, not a reliable current buying price; August 2026 price coverage reports some cards substantially above launch pricing. Compare current listings against the RX 9070 XT, and pay the premium only if the Nvidia features or your setup-specific compatibility justify it. Launch pricing is documented in Nvidia’s RTX 50-series announcement; retail context appears in PC Gamer’s GPU price watch.

High-end choice: GeForce RTX 5080

Consider the RTX 5080 when you need more headroom for 4K, demanding VR, or triple 1440p and can support the cost, power, and heat. Nvidia’s $999 US launch MSRP is not a current-price guarantee. For a single 1080p or standard 1440p screen, or a midrange CPU that will limit performance, the added expense may deliver little practical benefit. The launch reference is Nvidia’s Blackwell announcement.

The RTX 5090 sits above the RTX 5080 in Nvidia’s current product hierarchy, but “highest tier” is not the same as “best buy.” Treat it as an extreme-use option rather than a default sim-racing recommendation.

Budget choice: Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB

The RX 9060 XT 16GB suits ordinary single-screen 1080p or 1440p, lighter modded original AC, and buyers who want a newer card without paying for triple-screen-class performance. AMD lists the 16GB model at 160W with a 450W recommended PSU. Verify the capacity and power specifications for the exact model, since RX 9060 XT cards are available with different memory capacities. AMD’s graphics specifications list the available configurations.

It is not the right tier for consistently demanding EVO, high-resolution VR, or triple 1440p at high settings. If those are the goals, step up to a stronger 16GB-class option rather than expecting upscaling to erase the performance gap.

How much VRAM should you buy?

  • 8GB: Can be adequate for the original game and lower-cost 1080p play, but is a less comfortable new purchase for EVO, VR, triples, or extensive texture mods.
  • 12GB: Usable for many 1440p configurations, with less margin for demanding VR, triple 1440p, and high-resolution texture packs.
  • 16GB: The preferred capacity for a new sim-racing GPU in 2026, particularly if EVO, VR, triples, or heavy mods are in scope.
  • 20GB or more: Mainly useful for extreme-resolution rendering or unusually heavy workloads; more capacity does not automatically increase frame rate.

VRAM capacity helps avoid memory pressure, texture-streaming problems, or settings limits when a workload exceeds available memory. It is not a substitute for GPU processing power, and it does not guarantee smoother performance by itself.

AMD or Nvidia for Assetto Corsa?

Both brands can be suitable; choose based on the actual game, price, and features you will use. ACC supports both DLSS and FSR, including in triple-screen and VR modes, according to Kunos’ version 1.8 announcement. Support in one title should not be assumed for every game in the series.

  • Favor Nvidia if you want DLSS where supported, Nvidia’s capture/streaming or creator ecosystem, or a specific headset/runtime configuration you have confirmed works well with it.
  • Favor AMD if a Radeon offers better performance or memory capacity for the price, and the features and compatibility you need are available on your setup.
  • Compare the exact card price. Launch MSRP is historical; GPU prices can differ widely by retailer, model, and date. Recent context is available from PC Gamer and Tom’s Hardware.

There is no universal rule that Nvidia is always better for VR or that AMD is unsuitable. Headset, runtime, driver, game version, render scale, and reprojection all affect the result. Frame generation and upscaling also do not replace adequate native-rendering performance: racing responsiveness, clarity, and consistent frame pacing matter more than a headline displayed-FPS figure.

Check the rest of the system before upgrading

A GPU upgrade helps most when the graphics card is the limiting component. The original AC can become CPU-limited with large grids, complex physics, or poorly optimized mods; ACC and EVO can also hit CPU limits in busy scenes. Triple screens and VR raise GPU demand, but do not remove CPU bottlenecks.

  • Check GPU utilization alongside per-core CPU load; low GPU usage can indicate a CPU, game-thread, frame-limit, or driver-queue limit rather than a faulty card.
  • Watch VRAM and system RAM use, and inspect a frametime graph rather than relying only on average FPS.
  • Compare solo hotlaps with race starts, night or wet conditions, multiplayer, and larger AI grids.
  • In VR, note headset resolution and refresh, render scale, and how often reprojection is engaged.
  • Confirm the exact graphics card’s power connectors, dimensions, cooler clearance, and PSU recommendation. RX 9070 XT reference specifications list a 750W recommended PSU, but partner models can differ.

EVO’s published recommended CPU is an Intel Core i5-10500 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X-class processor, with 16GB RAM; its minimum processor class is Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X. These are the developer’s listed requirements, not guarantees for high-refresh racing. See the Steam requirements page.

Common buying mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing from the original game’s requirements when you mean EVO VR. Identify the exact title and display setup first.
  • Assuming recommended specs mean high settings or fixed FPS. Requirements do not establish triple-screen, VR, or race-start performance.
  • Buying only on average-FPS expectations. A solo hotlap can perform differently from a crowded grid, night race, or demanding track.
  • Treating frame generation as native performance. It can increase displayed frame rate but does not remove latency, artifacts, or the need for a responsive base frame rate.
  • Ignoring used-card risks. For older high-end cards such as RTX 3080/3090 or RX 6800 XT/6950 XT, check warranty, cooler condition, power needs, memory capacity, and return protection; do not assume an older flagship is automatically better value.
  • Assuming every board matches the reference specification. Check the selected model’s PSU advice, connectors, dimensions, and cooling before ordering.
