Yes—but only the PS5 Pro, and only in specific circumstances. Sony’s current support guide gives the Allow 8K Output setting to consoles in the CFI-7000 model group (the PS5 Pro family). It requires an 8K display that supports 60 Hz and Display Stream Compression (DSC), and it applies only to select games and supported capture features. The original PS5 and PS5 Slim remain 4K-class consoles in Sony’s current documentation.
For most buyers, a high-quality 4K/120 Hz display with VRR is a better PS5 investment. PS5 Pro’s main advantage is improved 4K image quality, ray tracing and frame-rate performance—not universal 8K gaming.
Which PS5 models support 8K output?

Check the console’s model-group identifier rather than relying on the generic “PS5” name. Sony’s current requirements and setting are documented in its PS5 resolution guide. Sony’s 2020 launch FAQ described 8K as a future software feature, but the current guide is the relevant source for today’s model limitation.
What “8K output” actually means
An 8K output means the PS5 Pro can send an 8K-format signal to a compatible display. It does not prove that a game internally renders every frame at native 7680 × 4320.

- Native rendering: The game’s internal image is produced at 8K. Sony’s general support pages do not establish this for all supported titles.
- Reconstruction or upscaling: A game may render below 8K and reconstruct or upscale to an 8K signal.
- 8K captures: Screenshots and Media Gallery support are separate from live gameplay rendering.
Use “up to 8K output” unless a particular developer documents native 8K rendering. Sony’s PS5 Pro messaging emphasizes 4K image quality, ray tracing and high-frame-rate play; its compatibility table separately identifies only select games as supporting up to 8K: PS5 Pro features and PS5 Pro compatibility.
What you need for PS5 Pro 8K
- A PS5 Pro in the CFI-7000 model group.
- An 8K display that accepts 60 Hz and supports DSC.
- A suitable high-bandwidth HDMI connection. HDMI 2.1 branding alone does not guarantee the required combination.
- Current console and display firmware.
- A game or feature that actually supports 8K.
Check the display manual for the specific HDMI input, 8K/60 capability and DSC implementation. During troubleshooting, connect the console directly to the display; an AV receiver, soundbar, switch or capture device may not pass the signal. Start with the cable included with the console. Sony also recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for high-bandwidth PS5 output: Sony’s PS5 FAQ.
How to turn on 8K output
- Connect the PS5 Pro directly to the 8K display.
- Update the console and television firmware.
- Open Settings.
- Select Screen and Video, then Video Output.
- Set Resolution to Automatic.
- Review the connected HDMI device information for reported resolution, HDR and VRR capabilities.
- Turn on Allow 8K Output.
- Launch a game whose PlayStation Store listing or developer documentation identifies 8K support.
The PS5 home screen and every application will not switch to 8K. If the picture disappears or becomes unstable, turn 8K output off and return to Automatic or 4K output.

What can run or be saved in 8K?
Sony’s compatibility table separates the console’s functions:

A PS5 Pro Enhanced label does not automatically mean 8K support. Check each game’s current PlayStation Store listing or developer notes; Sony does not provide a universal list in the cited compatibility guide. Media apps are listed only up to 4K, so 8K output should not be treated as general 8K movie or streaming support. An 8K television may upscale a 4K stream, but that is television processing rather than native 8K media from the console.
Sony also has a dedicated PS5 Pro troubleshooting page for cases where 8K screenshots cannot be captured.

Important 8K limitations
8K mode is not simply a higher-resolution version of the normal PS5 Pro experience:
- VRR is disabled. Return to a supported 4K mode if variable refresh is more important than 8K.
- 8K cannot be selected while two or more of Share Screen, Share Play, broadcasting and Remote Play are active together.
- Starting Share Screen, Share Play, broadcasting or Remote Play during 8K output stops gameplay recording.
- PlayStation VR cannot be used in 8K mode. If PS VR2 is connected while the television is set to 8K, the headset cannot display video.
- Zoom and pin-to-side two-screen modes are unavailable.
- Remote Play during 8K output requires Remote Play video quality of 720p or higher.
These restrictions make 4K/120 Hz with VRR the more practical choice for players who stream, record, use social features or switch frequently to VR.

Troubleshooting PS5 Pro 8K
“Allow 8K Output” is missing
- Confirm that the console is a PS5 Pro/CFI-7000 model.
- Install the latest system software.
- Confirm that the display reports 8K, 60 Hz and DSC support.
- Bypass receivers, soundbars, switches and capture devices.
Black screen or no signal
- Turn off the console.
- Connect it directly to the television’s appropriate high-bandwidth HDMI input.
- Use the supplied HDMI cable.
- Check the television’s input mode and firmware.
- Disable 8K output and restore Automatic or 4K output if necessary.
Consult Sony’s PS5 support pages if a direct connection still fails.

Flickering
Sony says changing Video Transfer Rate to -1 or -2 can improve flicker. Those settings limit 8K/60 Hz, so the workaround may stabilize the image by sacrificing the mode you are testing.
VRR or PS VR2 does not work
This is expected in 8K mode. Switch back to a supported 4K output whenever VRR or headset video is required.

For standard PS5 owners
No. Do not buy an 8K television to unlock a feature that Sony does not currently provide on the original PS5 or PS5 Slim. Prioritize 4K resolution, 120 Hz input, HDR, VRR and good gaming response.

For PS5 Pro owners with a 4K TV
Usually keep the 4K television. The Pro’s broader benefits—improved 4K image quality, ray tracing and steadier high-frame-rate performance—apply to far more gaming than its niche 8K mode.
For owners of an 8K TV
Testing 8K output can make sense if the set accepts 8K/60 Hz with DSC. Expect most games, the system interface and media apps to remain 4K-class, and expect VRR and several sharing features to be unavailable in 8K mode.
For buyers considering an 8K TV
Consider one when you also want a very large premium display or have other 8K sources such as a compatible PC or camera. It is poor value when the PS5 is the only reason for the purchase. Viewing distance and screen size also determine how visible the additional resolution will be.
Prices are volatile. For reference, PlayStation Direct pages observed on August 16, 2026 listed the 2 TB PS5 Pro at $899 and the 1 TB PS5 at $649; verify current pricing on the PS5 Pro product page and PS5 listings. Example Samsung 65-inch 8K models were listed at $2,699.99 sale price for the QN900F (prior price $3,299.99) and $3,999.99 for the QN990F (prior price $5,499.99); check the live QN900F page and QN990F page before buying.

The regular PS5 is a 4K console in current Sony documentation. The PS5 Pro can send an 8K signal, but only to an 8K/60 Hz DSC-compatible display, only for select games and features, and with VRR and other functions disabled. Buy a good 4K gaming display unless you already own a suitable 8K set or specifically want to experiment with the limited supported 8K experience.
