Best graphics and comfort settings for smoother Rustmourne VR gameplay

Rustmourne is not released yet, so there is no verified Rustmourne preset or measured performance result. Its Steam listing currently gives a release date of “To be announced,” marks the game as unavailable, and labels PC requirements as work in progress. The most reliable approach today is a disciplined PCVR baseline: choose a refresh rate your computer can sustain, start near 100% render scale, identify whether the CPU or GPU is limiting frame time, then lower the settings that address that limit. For comfort, begin with teleport or another discontinuous movement mode, snap turning, and a vignette if those controls appear in the final build.

What is known about Rustmourne VR support

Rustmourne is a VR-only sci-fi survival-horror game from Rustmourne Team. The current Steam page lists SteamVR support for Valve Index and the Meta Quest family, but it does not publish a final system-requirements table, graphics preset, menu labels, or a released build to test. Those omissions matter: any setting name or performance number presented as a confirmed Rustmourne result would be speculation.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The recommendations below are therefore a practical starting configuration for the PCVR runtime and common headset controls. Apply them when a playable build is available, and verify each option in the actual headset. Your processor, graphics card, headset resolution, runtime, USB or Wi-Fi connection, and the scene being rendered all affect the result.

Use frame time, not an FPS headline

VR comfort depends on delivering each frame before the headset’s deadline. A high average frame rate does not help if frame times spike during a head turn, a combat encounter, or a demanding horror scene. A 2026 PCVR Central reference gives these approximate native frame-time budgets:

Refresh rate Approximate time available per frame Practical implication
72 Hz 13.9 ms Most forgiving target; useful when the GPU or CPU is close to its limit.
80 Hz 12.5 ms A useful middle ground for a stable, clear image.
90 Hz 11.1 ms Common smoothness target, but it requires more headroom than 72 or 80 Hz.
120 Hz 8.3 ms Much less time for rendering; use only when demanding scenes remain inside budget.
144 Hz 6.9 ms Very demanding; prioritize stability over this mode’s theoretical smoothness.

These figures are timing budgets, not Rustmourne benchmarks. A stable 80 or 90 Hz mode can feel better than an unstable 120 Hz target because missed deadlines produce judder, reprojection artifacts, or visible hitching. As the SIMGASM guide puts it, “stable frame timing beats higher graphics” in VR.

Recommended first-time setup

Use the following order so that one change has a visible, attributable effect. The exact names may differ between SteamVR, your headset software, and the final Rustmourne menus.

  1. Confirm the platform. Install Rustmourne through Steam when it becomes available and launch it through SteamVR. The current listing identifies Valve Index and Meta Quest family headsets as supported categories, not as a promise of a particular frame rate.
  2. Pick a sustainable refresh mode. Start at 72, 80, or 90 Hz. Choose the highest of those that remains inside its frame-time budget in the most demanding area you can reach. Leave 120 or 144 Hz for a system that has substantial headroom.
  3. Set one render-resolution baseline. Use about 100% or 1.0x render scale in the headset or runtime. Do not simultaneously raise a headset resolution slider, SteamVR per-application resolution, a streaming application’s resolution, and an in-game scale; those layers can multiply the pixel workload.
  4. Restart or reload after major changes. Some runtimes apply resolution, encoder, or reprojection changes only after restarting the game or reconnecting the headset. Record the setting and result so you can return to the last stable configuration.
  5. Measure CPU and GPU frame time. Use a performance overlay that displays both values. Observe a demanding scene, turn your head rapidly, and walk through an area with effects or simulation activity before deciding that a setting is safe.
  6. Correct the limiting component. If GPU time is over budget while GPU utilization is high, reduce render scale and expensive GPU effects first. If GPU utilization is low, resolution changes do little, and busy scenes worsen, investigate CPU-heavy options and background tasks instead.
  7. Add quality one control at a time. After the baseline survives demanding scenes and a longer session, raise one option, retest, and keep the change only if frame time remains inside budget.

How to tell whether the GPU or CPU is limiting you

GPU-bound symptoms and fixes

  • GPU frame time exceeds the selected refresh-rate budget.
  • GPU utilization is high while CPU time remains comparatively comfortable.
  • Lowering render scale produces an immediate improvement.
  • Image-heavy scenes, volumetric lighting, reflections, shadows, or post-processing cause the largest spikes.

Lower render scale first, in a small step, and retest. If the image is already acceptable but effects remain expensive, reduce ray tracing (if present), volumetrics, shadow quality, reflections, and post-processing in that order. Do not automatically drop every quality option to its lowest value: targeted reductions preserve clarity in the settings that matter most to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CPU-bound symptoms and fixes

  • CPU frame time exceeds the budget or spikes during simulation-heavy moments.
  • GPU utilization is unexpectedly low.
  • Reducing resolution barely changes the hitching.
  • Performance deteriorates in areas with greater view distance, physics, crowds, or other simulation activity.

Reduce view distance, simulation distance, physics detail, crowd or NPC density, and equivalent CPU-focused controls if Rustmourne exposes them. Close browser tabs, recording software, launchers, and other background processes that consume CPU time. Lowering texture quality will not solve a CPU limit, and raising refresh rate makes the CPU deadline shorter.

Resolution and graphics settings: what to lower first

Render resolution has an outsized effect in VR because two high-resolution eye views are produced. It also exists at several layers: headset software, SteamVR, wireless streaming software, and the game may each apply a scale. Change one layer at a time and write down the value. If you lower two layers together, you will not know which one fixed the problem or whether you have reduced clarity more than necessary.

Setting or layer When to change it Trade-off
Headset/runtime render scale GPU time is over budget and utilization is high. Usually the fastest performance gain; lower clarity and more shimmer.
In-game resolution scale The final build exposes a separate scale and runtime resolution is already sensible. Same clarity-versus-performance trade-off, but confined to Rustmourne.
Ray tracing Reflections or lighting create large GPU spikes. Less physically accurate lighting and reflections.
Volumetrics Fog, smoke, shafts of light, or dense atmosphere are expensive. Atmospheric depth may be reduced, especially in horror scenes.
Shadows Shadow-map or contact-shadow passes dominate GPU time. Less detailed or shorter-range shadows.
Reflections Mirrors, wet surfaces, or reflective materials cause spikes. Less accurate reflected detail.
Post-processing GPU time remains high after the major lighting controls are reduced. Effects such as bloom or depth treatment may look simpler.
View distance, simulation, physics, crowds CPU time is the limit and resolution changes do not help. Objects, activity, or simulation may appear at shorter range or with lower detail.

Texture quality is normally a later adjustment when the problem is GPU compute time rather than video-memory pressure. If textures do not cause frame-time spikes, keep them higher for sharper surfaces and reduce a costly effect instead.

Refresh-rate choices for different PCs

72 Hz: the stability-first option

At about 13.9 ms per frame, 72 Hz gives the renderer the most time among the common modes listed above. It is a sensible starting point for an older or mobile-class GPU, for wireless PCVR with limited headroom, or for a build that has not yet been optimized. The lower cadence does not make a hitch acceptable; it simply provides a larger budget.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

80 Hz: a balanced baseline

80 Hz allows approximately 12.5 ms per frame. It can provide a useful compromise between motion clarity and rendering cost when 90 Hz is just outside the budget. Test it in the hardest scene rather than selecting it based on a quiet room or menu.

90 Hz: the usual smoothness target

90 Hz leaves about 11.1 ms. Choose it when both CPU and GPU frame times remain below that value with margin. If occasional spikes push the system over budget, lowering an effect or moving to 80 Hz is preferable to accepting repeated reprojection.

120 and 144 Hz: only with measured headroom

At 8.3 ms and 6.9 ms respectively, these modes sharply reduce the time available for each frame. They can feel excellent on a high-end, well-optimized system, but they leave less room for Rustmourne’s lighting, simulation, and streaming overhead. Do not use them as a quality setting; treat them as targets that must be earned by sustained measurements.

Quest PCVR: diagnose wired and wireless paths separately

Quest users have two different transport pipelines. A graphics setting can be correct while the connection still causes latency or stutter, so isolate the path before changing image quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wireless PCVR checklist

  1. Connect the gaming PC to the router by Ethernet rather than relying on a second Wi-Fi hop.
  2. Use a strong 5 GHz or 6 GHz signal where supported, with the headset in reliable range of the access point.
  3. Begin with a conservative streaming bitrate. Increase it only while latency and frame timing remain stable; a higher bitrate is not an improvement if it causes retransmissions or encoder delay.
  4. Separate network symptoms from rendering symptoms. A stable GPU frame time with sudden transport-latency spikes points to the wireless path, not Rustmourne’s shadows or resolution.

Wired Quest Link checklist

  1. Use a USB-C 3.2 VR Link cable rated for at least 5 Gbps. That minimum is cited by a 2026 PCVR Central guide, which in turn references current Meta Link guidance; it is a connection requirement, not a guarantee of performance.
  2. Check the runtime’s reported USB connection quality and try another motherboard port if the link is unstable.
  3. Review encoder settings and headset render resolution separately. A cable removes Wi-Fi variability but does not remove encoder workload or excessive pixel counts.
  4. Retest frame time after changing the cable, encoder, or resolution. Do not attribute a transport improvement to a graphics preset.

Wireless is convenient but adds network and encoding variables. Wired play is simpler to diagnose, yet it still depends on cable capability, USB behavior, encoder settings, and the headset’s resolution.

Comfort settings for survival-horror movement

Rustmourne’s final comfort menu is not published, so look for controls equivalent to the following rather than assuming exact labels or ranges.

Start with discontinuous movement

Choose teleportation or another discontinuous movement mode first. It limits the visual acceleration that commonly triggers discomfort. Once short sessions feel comfortable, test smooth movement in small increments rather than switching the entire session at once.

Use snap turning

Snap turning rotates the view in discrete steps instead of continuously sweeping the world across your eyes. Select a comfortable snap angle and increase continuous-turning exposure only after the baseline feels natural.

Enable a movement vignette

A vignette narrows the field of view during artificial movement, reducing peripheral motion. The cited RetroXR reference, updated 2026-10-07, recommends starting with teleport plus snap turning plus vignette when movement feels uncomfortable. If Rustmourne offers a vignette strength or activation threshold, begin conservatively and relax it gradually.

Keep frame pacing part of the comfort plan

Stutter can feel worse in a headset than on a monitor because the visual world moves with your head while frames arrive irregularly. Establish a sustainable refresh rate and stable frame time before increasing clarity, effects, or smooth-movement speed. If discomfort appears, stop, return to the last comfortable profile, and shorten the next test session.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Reprojection and motion smoothing

Reprojection can supplement the frames your PC renders. One 90 Hz example described by a PCVR Central guide renders 45 frames and generates additional frames to match the display cadence. This can prevent a complete fall below the headset’s refresh target, but it is not free: generated frames can show artifacts, add input delay, and produce judder when the runtime switches between modes.

  1. Choose a refresh rate and render scale that your PC can approach natively.
  2. Test native rendering in a demanding Rustmourne scene.
  3. If native performance is just short of the target, enable reprojection or SteamVR Motion Smoothing deliberately rather than using it to mask a severely overloaded profile.
  4. Evaluate the result in the headset while turning your head, moving past detailed geometry, and interacting with objects.
  5. Keep the mode only if its artifacts and latency are less distracting than the original missed frames.

Starter profiles to test when the game launches

These are test profiles, not confirmed Rustmourne presets. Each assumes you will verify frame time in a demanding scene.

Profile Refresh and scale Graphics approach Comfort approach Best use
Stability first 72 or 80 Hz; about 100% render scale, reduced only if needed Ray tracing off or low; volumetrics, shadows, reflections, and post-processing reduced; CPU options reduced if CPU-bound Teleport, snap turn, vignette First launch, older hardware, or unexplained hitching
Balanced 80 or 90 Hz; around 100% scale Keep textures reasonable; lower only the GPU or CPU settings identified by the overlay Teleport and snap turn initially; test smooth movement later Most systems after a clean baseline measurement
Clarity focused 90 Hz or higher only with measured headroom; scale raised in small steps Raise one clarity or effect setting at a time and preserve a margin below the frame-time budget Use the comfort controls that remain symptom-free during longer sessions High-end systems that already survive demanding scenes
Streaming conservative 72 or 80 Hz; moderate render scale Reduce GPU-heavy effects before increasing wireless bitrate; keep encoder load predictable Teleport, snap turn, vignette Wireless Quest PCVR while connection stability is being established

Troubleshooting common symptoms

“It stutters when I turn my head.”

Check both frame-time graphs while reproducing the turn. If GPU time spikes, lower render scale, then volumetrics, shadows, reflections, or post-processing. If neither graph explains the spike, inspect wireless latency, USB stability, overlays, and background recording tools.

“Lowering resolution did almost nothing.”

This points toward a CPU limit or a non-rendering bottleneck. Reduce view distance, simulation, physics, and crowd-related options; close CPU-heavy background programs; and test a lower refresh rate to provide a larger timing budget.

“The image is blurry after I fixed performance.”

Check every resolution layer before raising anything. A headset slider, SteamVR scale, streaming resolution, and in-game scale can combine. Restore the highest layer that does not push frame time over budget, then raise one GPU effect at a time.

“Wireless feels delayed even though graphics look fine.”

Separate network and encoding latency from render time. Use Ethernet for the PC, a strong 5 or 6 GHz connection, and a lower bitrate. Increase bitrate only after latency remains stable during movement and busy scenes.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Smooth movement makes me sick.”

Return to teleport, snap turning, and a vignette. Confirm that frame pacing is stable, because judder compounds motion discomfort. Reintroduce smooth movement, a wider field of view, or a larger snap angle one change at a time after comfortable sessions.

How to validate a final profile

Do not judge a setting in a quiet menu. Validate it with a repeatable route that includes the most detailed environment available, rapid head turns, movement, interaction, and any scene with heavy lighting or simulation. Record the refresh rate, each resolution layer, the graphics changes, CPU and GPU frame times, and whether the connection is wired or wireless. A profile is ready when it remains inside its frame-time budget with a margin, feels comfortable for the intended session length, and does not rely on artifacts or latency that you find distracting.

Because Rustmourne’s release date, requirements, menu labels, and optimization are still unsettled, revisit this process after each major update. The durable principles are to measure before changing many controls, match refresh rate to sustained frame time, fix the actual CPU/GPU or transport bottleneck, and add visual quality only after comfort and stability are secure.
