The best modded GTA 5 setup starts with the PC edition, your GPU’s VRAM and a stable frame-time target—not a universal “ultra” preset. For most 1080p systems, begin with High textures and shaders, High shadows, High grass, about 75% population density, MSAA off or 2x, and advanced distance options disabled. Lower Grass Quality first when frames drop, then Reflection MSAA, shadows and distance scaling. Keep modded single-player files separate from official GTA Online, and benchmark every major change with the same mod stack and repeatable city and rural routes.

Identify your GTA 5 edition before changing settings

Rockstar currently sells Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced and Legacy together on PC. They are separate technical targets for graphics settings and mods. Enhanced adds ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows and reflections, along with AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS support. Legacy uses the older rendering feature set that many established mods were built around.

Do not assume that a mod that works in Legacy will work in Enhanced. Check the mod’s release notes for the exact edition, game build and required loaders before installing it. A visual overhaul, script, trainer or graphics preset can fail simply because its files target the other edition. Keep a written list of your installed mods and their supported build so that a game update does not leave you guessing which component broke.

How to confirm the edition

  1. Open the Rockstar Games Launcher or your PC storefront and inspect the installed product name. It should identify Enhanced or Legacy.
  2. Launch the game without mods and note the executable and build information shown by your mod documentation or launcher.
  3. Read every mod’s compatibility section before copying files. If the author does not state edition support, treat it as unverified rather than testing it in your main installation.
  4. Make a clean backup of the unmodified game and your saves before adding a new loader or script.

Enhanced’s ray tracing and upscalers can improve image quality at a given output resolution, but they also change the performance balance. Older NVIDIA setting tests remain useful for the relative cost of Legacy-style options; they are not a promise of identical costs in Enhanced with ray tracing enabled.

Check hardware and establish a frame-time target

Rockstar’s published minimum for the PC game is Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600-class processor, 4GB of RAM, a 1GB NVIDIA 9800 GT-class graphics card and 120GB of storage (Rockstar Games, 2025). Those are launch requirements, not a guarantee that a graphics-heavy mod stack will run smoothly. Large texture packs, dense vegetation, scripts and ray-traced effects can require substantially more VRAM, memory and CPU headroom.

Decide what “smooth” means before you tune. A stable 60 frames per second has a 16.7 millisecond frame-time budget; 30 FPS allows 33.3 ms. A capped, consistent 45 or 50 FPS can feel better than an uncapped rate that repeatedly falls from 80 to 35. Record average FPS and 1% low behavior, or inspect frame-time graphs, rather than judging only the highest number in an empty scene.

VRAM is the first constraint to watch

Open the in-game graphics menu and watch its VRAM meter while selecting textures, shadows, reflections and population variety. Keep the meter below the available capacity, leaving room for your display resolution and mod assets. If the meter is full and you see hitching when driving into a new area, lower texture quality or remove the largest texture packs before cutting every other setting. Texture quality often changes memory use more than instantaneous GPU load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Population Variety generally affects memory more than frame rate because it increases the number of vehicle and pedestrian assets that must be resident. Raise it only after the meter remains comfortably below capacity in the busiest location you play.

Starting presets by resolution and hardware

Use these as controlled starting points. They are not universal guarantees: CPU model, GPU VRAM, resolution, driver, edition, weather, scripts and visual mods all change the result. Apply one preset, benchmark it, then adjust one setting at a time.

Balanced 1080p preset

Option Starting value Adjustment rule
DirectX API Use the stable API for your edition and mod stack If ERR_GFX_STATE appears, test Rockstar’s documented DirectX 12 change and save before restarting.
Texture Quality High or Very High Keep the higher value while the VRAM meter stays below capacity and streaming is smooth.
Shader Quality High or Very High Lower only after grass, reflections and shadows if GPU load is still too high.
Shadow Quality High Use softer shadows before enabling high-resolution shadows.
Reflection Quality High Disable Reflection MSAA first when chasing FPS.
MSAA Off or 2x Use FXAA as the inexpensive fallback for edge smoothing.
Grass Quality High Drop to Normal in rural scenes when foliage is the bottleneck.
Population Density About 75% Reduce to 40–60% if traffic and pedestrians overwhelm the CPU.
Population Variety Default or moderate Increase only with spare VRAM.
Distance Scaling Medium to High Reduce after grass, shadows and MSAA if city driving stutters.
Extended Distance Scaling Off initially Add only after the base preset is stable.
Extended Shadow Distance Off initially Enable only when distant shadow detail is worth its cost.
VSync or frame limit Match the display target after tuning Cap to a rate the system can hold consistently.

High-end 1440p or Enhanced ray-tracing preset

  • Keep textures and shaders at Very High if VRAM remains available.
  • Use High or Very High shadows, then add ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, reflections or shadows one at a time.
  • Keep Grass Quality at High or Very High unless rural scenes miss your frame-time target.
  • In Enhanced, select a DLSS or FSR quality mode before reducing the internal resolution manually. Re-test image quality in motion, not only in a still screenshot.
  • Keep MSAA moderate. Ray tracing plus high MSAA can exceed VRAM quickly and may produce worse frame-time spikes than a modest resolution reduction.
  • Repeat the same city and rural tests after every major ray-tracing or mod change.

Lower-end or heavily modded preset

  • Set Grass Quality to Normal or High, depending on how much foliage the visual mod adds.
  • Use Normal or High shadows with soft shadows; leave high-resolution shadows and long shadows off.
  • Turn MSAA and Reflection MSAA off and use FXAA.
  • Set Population Density to 40–60% when traffic, pedestrians or scripts are the CPU bottleneck.
  • Set Distance Scaling low to medium and leave advanced graphics options off.
  • Keep textures as high as VRAM allows, then lower them only when the meter or streaming stutter indicates memory pressure.
  • Cap the game to a stable target rather than pursuing a fluctuating peak.

Lower settings in the order that preserves the most visual quality

NVIDIA’s GTA 5 testing found that Grass Quality had “the largest impact on performance of any setting in the entire game.” High is its recommendation for most systems; Ultra is intended for the fastest systems and is particularly expensive in rural scenes. Grass also becomes more costly when a visual overhaul adds denser or higher-resolution vegetation.

1. Grass Quality

Test a forest road, field or hillside rather than only downtown. If the GPU frame time rises sharply in foliage, move from Ultra to High, or from High to Normal on a constrained system. This usually preserves buildings, cars and character detail better than immediately reducing textures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Reflection MSAA and MSAA

Reflection MSAA can be an expensive way to smooth reflections on cars, windows and water. Disable it first, then test MSAA at 2x or Off. FXAA is a cheaper fallback, although it can look softer. High MSAA combined with ray tracing can consume considerable VRAM, so do not use it as a default simply because the rest of the menu is set to Very High.

3. Shadow quality and special shadow options

Shadow Quality affects the resolution and stability of the main shadow maps. High is a useful starting point. High Resolution Shadows and long shadows are luxury options: they can consume substantial performance or memory while offering their clearest benefit in specific lighting conditions. In NVIDIA’s testing, disabling Long Shadows recovered about three FPS. That is a test result, not a guaranteed gain on every GPU or edition.

4. Population Density

NVIDIA identified approximately 75% as a practical “sweet spot.” Higher density increases CPU work and also amplifies the cost of reflections, shadows and night-time post-processing because there are more moving objects to draw and shade. Reduce density to 40–60% when traffic-heavy streets produce low 1% results, stutter or delayed input. Keep Population Variety separate: it mainly raises memory use, so lower variety only when VRAM is the issue.

5. Distance Scaling and advanced distance options

Distance Scaling controls how far ordinary geometry and objects remain detailed. Reduce it after grass, reflections and shadows if stutter appears while driving through the city. Extended Distance Scaling and Extended Shadow Distance add detail far from the camera and should be treated as luxury settings. NVIDIA found Extended Shadow Distance relatively inexpensive in its testing, but “relatively” does not mean free with a large mod stack. Enable one advanced option at a time and keep it only if the distant detail is visible during your normal play.

6. Post effects and night scenes

Night-time scenes can expose the combined cost of reflections, shadows, lighting and post effects. Compare a bright daytime route with a wet or night route before deciding that a setting is safe. If performance collapses only at night, lower reflections or MSAA before sacrificing textures that remain useful in every scene.

Use Enhanced upscaling and ray tracing deliberately

Enhanced supports AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS. Start with a Quality mode and inspect moving foliage, thin power lines, vehicle edges and distant signage. If the image remains clean and the frame-time budget is still missed, move to a more performance-oriented mode before lowering several unrelated settings. Upscaling changes internal resolution; it does not reduce the memory footprint of every texture or script, so keep watching VRAM.

Add ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows and reflections one at a time. Record the frame-time change and check both city and rural routes. Ray tracing can make reflections or indirect light more convincing, but combining several ray-traced effects with high MSAA may exceed VRAM or create unstable lows. A stable rasterized preset with one carefully chosen ray-traced effect is often a better experience than enabling every option and accepting hitching.

NVIDIA reported an average 3.9x frame-rate increase from DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation on RTX 50-series hardware at 4K with ray tracing in its 2025 test. That figure is a specific vendor test result under stated hardware and workload conditions; it is not a universal GTA 5 uplift, and generated frames do not remove the need for a responsive base frame rate. Check that your exact Enhanced build and driver expose the feature before planning around it.

Benchmark a modded installation instead of trusting one scene

The built-in benchmark is useful for comparing individual settings, but NVIDIA notes that it is not representative of five-star police action or heavily forested areas. A preset that looks excellent in the benchmark can still hitch when a script spawns traffic, when a weather mod loads dense vegetation or when a mission fills the screen with effects.

A repeatable three-part test

  1. Run the built-in benchmark with the same resolution, API, mod list and frame cap. Record average FPS, the lowest pass and 1% lows or a frame-time graph.
  2. Drive a repeatable dense-city route at the same time of day. Include intersections with traffic, pedestrians, reflective windows and several turns so assets stream in consistently.
  3. Drive a rural or forest route, then reproduce the heaviest mission, combat scene or scripted event you actually play. Include night or rain if those conditions are common in your mod setup.

Change one graphics setting or one mod at a time, record the result and keep the change only if it improves the target route without causing new stutter. Averages can hide hitching, so prioritize frame-time consistency and 1% lows when choosing between two visually similar settings.

Install and update mods with a recovery path

  1. Confirm Enhanced or Legacy support and the required game build for every mod.
  2. Back up the clean installation, saves and configuration files. Keep the backup outside the game directory so a file verification cannot overwrite it.
  3. Use a dedicated mods folder when the mod documentation supports one. This keeps altered archives separate from the original files and makes removal easier.
  4. Install only the runtime components the mod requires, such as OpenIV, ScriptHookV or an ASI loader. Do not add multiple loaders “just in case”; overlapping components can cause startup failures.
  5. Launch the unmodified game once after a major game update, then add the mod stack back in small groups. This identifies whether the update or a particular mod caused the failure.
  6. After every major addition, run the benchmark and the city, rural and heavy-scenario tests. Keep a simple log of the mod version, graphics settings, average FPS and 1% low behavior.

Large texture packs can push VRAM over capacity even when the graphics menu appears acceptable. If streaming hitches begin after adding a texture pack, remove that pack or lower Texture Quality before randomly reducing CPU-heavy settings such as population density.

Fix crashes, stutter and ERR_GFX_STATE systematically

Random tweaks make diagnosis harder. Use Rockstar’s standard checks first, then change one variable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Game will not start after installing a mod

  • Remove the newest mod or loader and restore the clean backup.
  • Confirm that the mod supports your edition and current build.
  • Check that ScriptHookV, the ASI loader and any framework version required by the mod are present and compatible.
  • Launch without mods. If the clean game fails too, update the game and GPU driver and verify the installation files.

Stutter while driving or entering new areas

  • Watch VRAM and lower texture quality or remove the largest texture pack if the meter is full.
  • Reduce Distance Scaling after testing grass, reflections and shadows.
  • Lower Population Density when the hitch coincides with heavy traffic or pedestrian activity.
  • Use a frame cap that the system can hold instead of allowing large swings.
  • Retest with the same route after each change; a one-time pause during asset loading is not equivalent to continuous stutter.

ERR_GFX_STATE or repeated graphics crashes

  1. Update the game and graphics driver.
  2. Verify the game files through the launcher or storefront.
  3. Check that DirectX and Visual C++ components are installed and current.
  4. Remove recently added graphics mods and test the clean game.
  5. For ERR_GFX_STATE, Rockstar lists switching the graphics API to DirectX 12, saving the setting and restarting as a possible remedy. Test that change on your exact edition and mod stack; revert if the mod documentation requires another API.

If the crash returns only with a particular weather, lighting or texture mod, treat that mod as the variable rather than repeatedly reinstalling drivers. Keep the crash log and the exact load order so the author can reproduce the problem.

Keep modded single-player separate from GTA Online

GTAPoliceMods documents a common single-player setup using OpenIV, a mods folder, ScriptHookV and an ASI loader. It also warns that changed files can cause problems or bans on official online servers. Do not connect to official GTA Online with modified files active.

  1. Close the game before switching between configurations.
  2. Disable or remove modified archives, scripts, ASI plugins and loaders before launching official GTA Online.
  3. Follow the mod manager’s instructions, but do not assume that a disabled profile is sufficient if files remain in the live installation.
  4. Use a clean, separately verified installation for online play whenever possible.
  5. After an online session, restore the clean state before re-enabling single-player mods.

Mod compatibility and anti-cheat behavior can change with patches. A configuration that worked previously is not evidence that it is safe after an update.

When a hardware upgrade is justified

Upgrade based on the bottleneck you can measure, not on a promised FPS percentage. A GPU with more VRAM is the useful direction when texture streaming, ray tracing and high-resolution shadows exhaust memory. A faster GPU helps when GPU frame time remains high after reducing grass, reflections and MSAA. A faster CPU helps when lowering resolution does little and dense traffic or scripts produce poor 1% lows. More system RAM can help a heavily modded installation avoid paging, but it does not cure a GPU-limited scene.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An SSD is valuable for installation, backups and shorter loading or streaming waits, but it does not materially raise FPS when the GPU is the limiting component. Keep enough free space for the game, backups and mod archives; Rockstar’s stated 120GB minimum is for the game requirement, not a recommended amount of spare working space for a large mod library.

A practical tuning checklist

  • Confirm Enhanced or Legacy and check every mod’s edition support.
  • Set a realistic resolution and frame-time target.
  • Start with High textures and shaders, High shadows, High grass, about 75% population density and MSAA off or 2x.
  • Leave Extended Distance Scaling and Extended Shadow Distance off until the base preset is stable.
  • Lower Grass Quality first, then Reflection MSAA/MSAA, shadows, population density and distance scaling according to the measured bottleneck.
  • Use DLSS or FSR Quality in Enhanced before making larger image-quality sacrifices.
  • Watch VRAM while driving through the densest city and rural scenes.
  • Benchmark, then test a repeatable city route, a forest route and your heaviest real scenario.
  • Change one setting or mod at a time and record average FPS plus 1% lows or frame time.
  • For crashes, update, verify files, check DirectX and Visual C++ components, then test the documented API change for ERR_GFX_STATE.
  • Restore a clean installation before official GTA Online.
