What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The best starting point depends on which build you own. The original 32-bit-era Shogun 2 uses the older graphics menu and Feral Interactive’s performance guidance; the 2026 Complete Edition is a separate 64-bit build with updated rendering, 1440p and 4K interface scaling, borderless fullscreen, and newer upscaling options. For either build, keep your monitor’s native resolution when performance allows, then reduce the most expensive settings one at a time. There is no published modern-PC benchmark or universal frame-rate preset, so treat the recommendations below as a controlled way to find the best image-quality and smoothness balance on your system.
Identify your Shogun 2 build first
Creative Assembly’s announcement of the Complete Edition on 29 September 2026 says its changes apply only to that edition and that the original Shogun 2 build remains accessible. This matters because a setting recommendation for the legacy executable is not a measured preset for the Complete Edition.

Original Shogun 2
The original build is the version covered by Feral Interactive’s performance readme and the legacy Steam requirements. Its options are exposed in the pre-game Options window under Display, or after launching the game through Options → Graphics. The exact options shown can vary with the computer and with interactions between settings.

The Complete Edition is described as a 64-bit upgrade with improved rendering and anti-aliasing, updated textures, models, shadows, lighting, fog and skyboxes, plus borderless fullscreen and interface scaling for 1440p and 4K displays. The announcement also names DLSSSR and AMD FSR 3.1. Those features belong to the Complete Edition; do not assume they exist in the original executable or use the legacy list as proof of how the new renderer performs.

Before changing anything, verify the product name in your launcher or library and note whether the available menu contains Complete Edition features such as borderless fullscreen or the newly announced upscalers. If the controls do not match the description for your build, do not force a setting by editing files or assume that an option is hidden; use the controls provided by that executable.
A safe starting strategy for a modern PC
Use this as a tuning procedure rather than as a claimed benchmark preset. Start at your display’s native resolution and a visually high configuration. If the game is not smooth, change one option at a time, beginning with the highest-impact item in Feral’s ordered list. Play the same demanding campaign or battle situation after each change, note whether the problem improves, and keep the highest visual setting that does not cause objectionable slowdown.
- Close other applications before launching the game and leave free space on the disk that contains the game, as Feral recommends.
- Open the graphics controls from the pre-game Options → Display window or the in-game Options → Graphics menu.
- Confirm the edition you launched. Do not look for Complete Edition-only options in the original build.
- Set the monitor’s native resolution first. Lower it only when you have accepted the resulting loss of sharpness or when a higher, steadier frame rate is more important.
- Adjust one setting, reproduce the same workload, and record the result. Avoid changing a group of options if you want to know which change helped.
- Stop when the game is consistently comfortable to play. A setting that looks impressive in a quiet scene may become expensive when many units, particles, shadows or fleets are visible.
For repeatable testing, use the same saved battle or campaign location, observe a busy section rather than an empty map, and compare both image quality and responsiveness. The official guidance ranks options by expected relative cost, but it does not define a modern frame-rate target. A change that helps one computer may have little effect on another, particularly when several settings interact.
Feral’s ordering describes the expected relative performance cost in the legacy game, not frame rates on current hardware. The interaction of several options can alter the result, so use the order as a diagnostic priority rather than a promise that every computer will respond identically.
Legacy build: settings ranked by expected performance impact
The following table preserves Feral’s order from the largest expected improvement to the smallest. “Faster” and “slower” are relative vendor guidance for the legacy build, not measurements on a modern PC.
| Setting | Slower choice | Faster choice | Visual trade-off and use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen resolution | 2560×1440 | 1024×768 | Lower resolution reduces rendered detail and can look soft when it does not match the display. Retain native resolution if possible; 1280×1024 sits between the two choices in Feral’s list. |
| Vertical synchronisation | On | Off | Turning it off can improve performance but may expose tearing. Choose based on whether tearing or latency is more distracting on your display. |
| Particle effects | Ultra | Low | Medium is the intermediate option. Lower settings reduce smoke, fire and other battlefield effects. |
| Anti-aliasing | MLAA | None | None is faster but leaves more visible jagged edges. MLAA smooths edges at a performance cost in the legacy renderer. |
| Texture filtering | Anisotropic 16x | Trilinear | Anisotropic 4x is the middle choice. Lower filtering can make surfaces viewed at an angle look less crisp. |
| Texture quality | Ultra | Low | Medium is the intermediate choice. Lower quality reduces texture detail and may help systems constrained by graphics memory. |
| Depth of field | Low | Off | Disabling the effect removes the focus blur and is the faster choice in Feral’s list. |
| Shader model | Shader model 3 (high) | Shader model 3 (low) | The low shader setting can improve performance while reducing shader complexity. Both choices are part of the legacy shader-model-3 path. |
| Unit detail and building detail | Ultra | Low | Medium is the intermediate choice. Lower values reduce the complexity of soldiers, structures and their visible detail. |
| Shadows | Ultra | Off | Medium is the intermediate choice. Disabling shadows has a major visual effect but is an option when battlefield performance is the priority. |
| Unit size and maximum fleet size | Ultra unit size or Large fleet size | Small | Medium is the intermediate choice. Smaller settings reduce the number of entities the game must display or manage at once. |
| Trees, grass, water and sky | Ultra | Low or Off where offered | Medium is the intermediate choice. These settings alter environmental density and atmosphere rather than the underlying campaign rules. |
| Terrain quality | High | Low | Lower terrain quality simplifies the landscape and is faster according to Feral. |
| Distortion or heat haze; HDR or light bloom; vignette; SSAO or ambient shadow; blood effects | On | Off | Each effect is slower when enabled. Blood effects require the Blood Pack downloadable content. |
How to read the ranking
Start with the first row only when you are willing to trade image sharpness for speed. If the native-resolution image is important, leave resolution alone and move down to synchronisation, particles, anti-aliasing, filtering and textures. If battles are still slow, reduce unit detail, shadows and unit size. This approach preserves the features you notice most instead of dropping every option to Low immediately.
The labels are not interchangeable. Anisotropic 4x is the middle filtering choice, Medium is the middle choice for particles, textures, detail, shadows and environmental options, and Trilinear is the fastest filtering choice named by Feral. “Off” is available for some effects but not every environmental control. Use the exact choices your menu exposes.

How to choose a visual target
Native-resolution quality
Use the display’s native resolution, high texture and filtering settings, detailed units and buildings, and enabled effects. This is the appropriate first attempt when the legacy game already feels smooth on your computer. If slowdowns appear, begin with resolution only if you are willing to accept a softer image; otherwise move through the list and reduce particles, anti-aliasing, filtering and textures before cutting the settings that define unit and environment detail.
Balanced play
Keep native resolution, use medium values for particles, filtering, textures, unit and building detail, shadows, environmental detail and fleet or unit size, and disable expensive post-processing effects that you do not notice during play. This is a methodical compromise, not a tested universal preset. Retain anti-aliasing if jagged edges bother you, or remove it before lowering resolution when clarity is more important than edge smoothing.
Performance-first play
Turn off vertical synchronisation, reduce particles, anti-aliasing, texture filtering, textures, depth of field, shader quality, unit and building detail, shadows, environment detail and terrain quality in the order shown above. Lower resolution only when those changes are insufficient. Use small unit and fleet sizes if large battles or naval scenes are the point at which performance collapses. Expect visible losses in image quality and battlefield scale.
Resolution, scaling and display choices
Steam’s legacy listing gives 1024×768 as the minimum display resolution and 1280×1024 as the recommended minimum. Feral’s performance comparison places 2560×1440 at the slow end, 1280×1024 in the middle and 1024×768 at the fast end. These figures describe the old game’s options and requirements; they are not evidence that a current 1440p or 4K monitor must be run at a particular resolution, nor are they a modern frame-rate test.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For the original build, matching the game’s output to the monitor’s native mode usually gives the clearest interface and avoids scaling blur. Lower the game’s resolution deliberately when you have established that other changes do not provide enough headroom. In the Complete Edition, the announced 1440p and 4K UI scaling is intended to keep interface elements usable at those resolutions, so reducing resolution solely to make menus readable is less necessary than it was on the legacy build.
Do not confuse interface scaling with rendering performance. Scaling changes the size and usability of menus; it does not establish a frame-rate result. Likewise, borderless fullscreen is a display-mode feature in the Complete Edition, not evidence that every system will run faster than exclusive fullscreen. Compare modes on your own display and keep the one that behaves reliably.
Legacy system requirements and what they do not prove
| Component | Legacy Steam requirement |
|---|---|
| Processor minimum | 2 GHz Intel dual-core, or 2.6 GHz single-core, with SSE2; AMD equivalent accepted |
| Memory minimum | 1 GB for Windows XP, or 2 GB for Windows Vista and Windows 7 |
| Graphics minimum | 256 MB DirectX 9.0c graphics card with shader model 3 |
| Graphics recommendation | AMD Radeon HD 5000 or 6000 series, or an equivalent DirectX 11-compatible card |
| Storage | 32 GB of disk space |
| Display minimum | 1024×768 |
| Recommended display minimum | 1280×1024 |
These are the store’s historical requirements for the legacy release. They are not a guarantee of smooth play on a contemporary operating system, a prediction of performance at 1440p or 4K, or proof that buying a newer graphics card is necessary. The consulted material supplies no controlled modern-PC benchmark, target frame rate or graphics-card comparison.

The processor, memory and graphics-card lines explain what the old release expected at launch; they do not identify a bottleneck in your particular machine. Feral’s broader statement is that CPU speed, built-in RAM, graphics-card type and selected in-game settings all matter. Diagnose with the settings procedure rather than treating one old specification as a shopping list.

Use the Complete Edition’s own graphics controls when you launch that build. The announced changes include a 64-bit executable, borderless fullscreen, improved rendering and anti-aliasing, updated textures, models, shadows, lighting, fog and skyboxes, and support for DLSSSR and AMD FSR 3.1. Upscaling and anti-aliasing choices can change the balance between internal render resolution and output sharpness, so evaluate them at the display resolution you intend to use.
The announcement also says that more than 50 minor factions are playable. That is a content feature, not a performance statistic; it should not be interpreted as a frame-rate claim. Because no modern Complete Edition benchmark is provided, test its options in your own campaign and battles instead of importing a presumed legacy preset.
When comparing Complete Edition choices, use four questions: how much performance headroom the option appears to provide on your system, whether the image remains sharp at your output resolution, whether the control exists in your edition, and whether the visual change is noticeable during play. Do not assume that a legacy “Ultra” label has the same cost after the renderer changes.
Troubleshooting common performance problems
The game is slow everywhere
- Confirm that the game is using the intended build and display mode.
- Close background applications and ensure the game’s disk has spare capacity.
- Lower settings from the top of Feral’s list: resolution, vertical synchronisation, particles, anti-aliasing, filtering and textures.
- Retest after each change so you can restore visual quality on settings that were not responsible.
Large battles or fleets cause the slowdown
- Reduce unit size and maximum fleet size from Ultra or Large to Medium, then Small if necessary.
- Lower unit and building detail, shadows, particles and environmental detail.
- Remember that the list describes relative cost; the setting that helps most on your computer may differ.
The picture is sharp but shows tearing
Vertical synchronisation is slower when enabled in Feral’s comparison but can remove tearing. If you disable it for speed, decide whether the resulting tearing is acceptable on your display. There is no sourced universal choice that is best for every monitor.
The picture is blurry after lowering resolution
Restore native resolution and reduce another setting instead, or use the Complete Edition’s announced scaling and upscaling options where available. A lower non-native resolution can be faster while looking softer because the monitor must scale it.
Some graphics options are missing
Feral says the machine and interactions between selected settings can restrict which options appear. Check the pre-game Display window as well as the in-game Graphics menu, and verify that you are not expecting Complete Edition features in the original build.

You are playing on a Mac with two monitors
Feral’s readme specifically says that disconnecting a second monitor may improve performance on Mac. That advice is platform-specific; it should not be generalized to Windows without separate evidence.
You are considering a hardware purchase
No specific modern graphics card, processor, memory kit, monitor or peripheral is established as necessary by the available specifications. The legacy requirements do not demonstrate that an upgrade will solve your problem, and no supported comparison identifies a best-value model. Tune the existing installation first; buy hardware only after an independent diagnosis shows that it is needed for your broader workload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat a “best” setting really means here
A best configuration is the highest visual quality that remains comfortable during the situations that matter to you, not a fixed list of Ultra, High or Low values. The official legacy guidance identifies which controls are expected to cost the most, while the Complete Edition announcement documents a different renderer and feature set. Since neither source supplies a controlled modern-PC test, measure your own result by repeating the same demanding scene, changing one control at a time, and keeping notes about image quality as well as smoothness.
Keep a backup of your preferred settings or write them down before experimenting. That makes it easy to return to a known configuration after testing an aggressive performance-first profile. Remember that reducing unit size changes the scale of battles you see, while disabling shadows, effects or anti-aliasing changes presentation; choose the compromise that fits how you actually play.
Source context
Feral Interactive’s official Shogun 2 readme says: “The most important factors in determining how smoothly Total War: SHOGUN 2 plays are your CPU speed, the amount of built-in RAM, the type of graphics card in your computer and the in-game settings you select.” Steam’s listing supplies the legacy requirements, and Creative Assembly’s 29 September 2026 Complete Edition announcement defines which upgrades belong only to that build. The announcement explicitly states: “These changes, additions and fixes apply only to the Complete Edition, as we know it is vital that the original Shogun 2 build remains accessible as it currently exists.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Shogun 2 build do these settings apply to?
The ranked performance list comes from Feral Interactive’s legacy Shogun 2 readme. The 2026 Complete Edition has a separate 64-bit renderer and additional features, so test its own controls rather than assuming the legacy order is a measured preset.

What should I change first to improve performance?
In the legacy build, Feral lists resolution first, followed by vertical synchronisation, particle effects, anti-aliasing, texture filtering and texture quality. Change one option at a time and retest the same demanding scene.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Should I lower resolution on a 1440p or 4K monitor?
Keep the display’s native resolution if performance allows. Lower it only as a deliberate speed-versus-sharpness trade-off. Complete Edition interface scaling for 1440p and 4K reduces the need to lower resolution just to read menus.
Is there a universal FPS setting or preset?
No controlled modern-PC benchmark or universal frame-rate preset is established. The official list gives relative performance priorities for the legacy game, not current frame-rate figures.
Does turning V-sync off always make the game better?
Feral lists V-sync off as faster, but disabling it can introduce tearing. Choose according to which issue is more distracting on your monitor.
Why are some options unavailable?
Feral says the computer and interactions between selected settings can restrict which controls appear. Check both the pre-game Display window and the in-game Graphics menu, and confirm that you are not expecting a Complete Edition feature in the original build.
Do I need to buy a new graphics card for Shogun 2?
The legacy requirements do not prove that a modern upgrade is necessary, and no source establishes a best card or processor. Tune and diagnose the current system before considering a purchase.
Does the Blood Pack affect graphics settings?
Blood effects require the Blood Pack downloadable content. The effect is listed as slower when enabled in Feral’s legacy performance guidance.
The Bottom Line
Identify the executable first: original Shogun 2 and Complete Edition are different builds. For the legacy game, keep native resolution when possible, then work down Feral’s ordered list—V-sync, particles, anti-aliasing, filtering, textures, detail, shadows and scale—changing one control at a time. Treat Steam’s old requirements as historical limits, not modern performance promises. The Complete Edition’s new renderer, scaling and upscalers require their own testing, and no published modern benchmark justifies a universal preset or hardware purchase.
