For a reliable starting point, use the current Breath of the Wild Graphics pack at its default 1280×720 resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio, select Vulkan with Async shader compile, and leave anti-aliasing at its default. Enable FPS++ if you want a higher frame-rate target, but drop to 30 FPS when a quest or event misbehaves. There is no universally best preset: resolution, frame rate, and shadows need to be balanced against your GPU and the game’s behavior.
Start with a stable Cemu setup
Before tuning graphics, update Breath of the Wild and its packs. Cemu’s installation guide says the game needs its latest update to function; the Cemu Wiki identifies version V208 (1.5.0) as necessary for FPS++ and many other graphics packs to work properly. In Cemu, open the game’s Edit graphics packs window and update the community packs, following the Cemu Guide’s game-installation instructions and Breath of the Wild Cemu Wiki entry.

Recommended starting settings
| Setting | Starting point | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics pack resolution and aspect ratio | 1280×720, 16:9; these are the current pack defaults in the Breath of the Wild Graphics pack rules. | Raise resolution only if your GPU can sustain your chosen frame-rate target in demanding areas. |
| Renderer | Vulkan, where supported. | Compare with OpenGL if Vulkan causes compatibility or rendering problems on your system. |
| Async shader compile | Enabled as a general Cemu performance starting point. | Use Cemu’s documented general guidance; this is not a guarantee of a particular frame rate. |
| Anti-aliasing | Leave the default initially. | Change it only after checking whether the image quality or performance needs adjustment. |
| Shadow resolution | Default or moderate. | Increase for sharper shadows if performance remains smooth; keep it at or below 300%. |
| Shadow draw distance | Very High is Cemu’s suggested balance. | Higher distance renders shadows farther away, but they may appear blurrier. |
| FPS++ | Enable for a higher frame-rate target; Cemu’s guide gives 60 FPS as its default limit. | Use a 30 FPS limit if a quest or event misbehaves above 30 FPS. |
Choose Vulkan or OpenGL
Cemu recommends Vulkan and Async shader compile as general performance settings, and its Breath of the Wild optimization guide specifically suggests Vulkan for higher resolutions. The Community Graphic Packs project says version 4 packs fully support both Vulkan and OpenGL. Start with Vulkan, then try OpenGL as a troubleshooting comparison if you see rendering or compatibility issues. The available documentation does not establish that one renderer is faster on every GPU; keep the one that behaves best on your system.
Pick a resolution your GPU can sustain
The pack starts at 1280×720 with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Moving to 1080p, 1440p, or 4K can make the image sharper, but Cemu describes Breath of the Wild as unusually demanding on graphics hardware, particularly at higher resolutions and frame rates. Supersampling—rendering above your display’s resolution—can improve anti-aliasing, but it is computationally expensive.

Try a higher resolution only if performance remains smooth in demanding areas, not just at startup. Change one option at a time and compare in a repeatable area of the game so it is clear which change helped or hurt. Cemu advises testing resolution choices per system rather than prescribing one ideal setting for every PC.
Tune shadows without inviting instability
Shadow resolution controls sharpness and detail: raising it can improve the image, while lowering it can help performance. Cemu warns that 400% may cause instability and recommends no more than 300%. Shadow draw distance is a separate setting. Increasing it makes shadows render farther away, but can make them blurrier; Cemu recommends Very High as a balance.

Use FPS++ with the right expectations
FPS++ is the pack option for targeting a higher frame rate; Cemu’s guide lists a 60 FPS default limit. However, Breath of the Wild’s physics expect a constant timestep, and the Cemu Wiki documents unresolved issues above 30 FPS. A 60 FPS target is therefore not a guarantee of bug-free gameplay.

If the issue continues, try Static mode at 30 FPS or disable FPS++. Treat the higher limit as a system- and gameplay-dependent option, not a universal improvement.

Troubleshoot low or inconsistent performance
- Lower resolution first: Reduce the graphics-pack resolution before giving up on higher frame rates.
- Reduce shadow resolution: This can ease the graphics load; avoid settings above Cemu’s 300% recommendation.
- Check VRAM: The Cemu Wiki notes that Vulkan users with less than 4 GB of VRAM may encounter VRAM-related performance problems. Lowering resolution and shadow resolution may help, but the threshold does not predict a specific result for every system.
- Check the PC itself: Look for thermal throttling, and on laptops check power settings and ventilation.
- Compare renderers: If Vulkan has rendering or compatibility trouble, try OpenGL rather than assuming every GPU will perform better with Vulkan.
Which preset should you choose?
Use these choices as tuning priorities rather than guaranteed performance profiles; the available documentation provides no controlled benchmark or precise FPS expectation for unspecified hardware.
Quick Recap
| Priority | Settings to favor | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stability and troubleshooting | 1280×720, 16:9; Vulkan or the renderer that avoids errors; default anti-aliasing; moderate or default shadows; FPS++ limited to 30 if gameplay problems appear. | Lower image detail and frame-rate ceiling than an aggressive setup. |
| Sharper image | Test 1080p, 1440p, or higher, and adjust anti-aliasing only after checking the default. | Higher resolutions and supersampling demand more graphics performance. |
| Higher frame-rate target | Enable FPS++ and begin with its 60 FPS default limit. | Issues above 30 FPS are documented; return to 30 FPS if an event or quest misbehaves. |
