Before buying a PC game, check three things on the exact offer: what the edition includes, whether your PC meets that game’s published requirements, and which storefront will handle payment and refunds. Edition labels are not standardized, requirements do not guarantee a particular performance level, and refund rules vary by store, product, and location.
What does the edition actually include?
Open the contents list for the specific offer rather than relying on labels such as “Deluxe,” “Gold,” “Ultimate,” “Complete,” or “Collector’s.” Publishers do not use those names as a shared definition. For example, Steam’s developer documentation describes a Deluxe Edition as one possible bundle containing a base game and DLC or a related application; that is an example, not a rule for other games or publishers. Check whether the offer contains the base game, expansions, playable DLC, soundtracks, artbooks, cosmetic items, virtual currency, or other products. These are not interchangeable: an expansion may add gameplay, while a soundtrack or cosmetic item is an extra. Also check whether you already own any included content and whether the bundle includes items you do not want.
Steam has distinct bundle mechanics. Its “Complete The Set” bundles charge for items the buyer does not already own, while “Must Purchase Together” bundles can only be purchased if none of their included products are owned. Will your PC run the game?
Compare your computer’s specifications with the requirements on that game’s own store listing. Steamworks asks developers to specify supported operating systems and enter system requirements for their store pages; a Steam listing may show separate minimum and recommended configurations. - Operating system: Check the supported version and any stated 32-bit or 64-bit architecture requirement.
- Processor: Compare the listed CPU with yours.
- Memory: Check the RAM requirement.
- Graphics: Compare your GPU and any specified video memory (VRAM).
- Graphics API: Check for a DirectX or other API requirement if one is listed.
- Storage: Make sure you have enough available space. If the seller gives separate download and installation figures, use the relevant figure for each stage.
- Other conditions: Look for requirements such as an internet connection, account, launcher, controller, or specific hardware feature.
“Minimum” and “recommended” are the game’s published configurations; they do not, by themselves, establish a guaranteed frame rate or graphics-quality setting. Steam’s listing for CONTROL Ultimate Edition, for instance, displays separate minimum and recommended specifications, but its figures should not be carried over to another game. If your PC is close to the minimum, or you use laptop or mobile graphics, consult the publisher’s game-specific notes and recent reliable performance testing before buying. A published requirements list alone cannot tell you exactly how the game will perform on your system.

Start with the point of sale: the company or seller that takes payment is the one whose terms you need to check. Steam says purchases made outside Steam—including third-party CD keys—are not covered by its refund policy. Epic similarly directs customers who paid through a third-party checkout to that seller’s terms. A key seller’s refund rules may differ from the rules for buying directly through a game store.

Eligibility and handling can vary by location, payment method, product type, publisher or developer settings, and point of sale. Epic says consumers resident in the EU generally have a statutory withdrawal right for purchases, while noting that a buyer may be asked to waive that right at purchase. Valve notes that some jurisdictions may provide additional rights for faulty games. Check the rules that apply where you live rather than assuming one store’s policy is universal. A quick pre-checkout checklist
- Open the exact edition offer. Confirm the base game and each included add-on or extra, and account for content you already own.
- Compare your PC field by field. Check the game’s OS, CPU, RAM, GPU and VRAM, graphics API, storage, and any additional requirements against your system.
- Identify the seller taking payment. Read that seller’s refund terms and confirm that a third-party key is for the intended platform and region.
- Check the relevant conditions before relying on a refund. Note any product label, purchase or release window, runtime limit, and local consumer rights that may apply.
