Best graphics settings for smooth performance in Order of the Sinking Star

There is no verified full-release graphics preset for Order of the Sinking Star yet. The official Steam listing publishes minimum and recommended hardware, but it does not list the current PC graphics controls, their defaults, or measured performance. The safest way to pursue smooth play is therefore to compare your CPU, GPU and memory with those requirements, record your resolution and symptoms, and change only controls that are actually present in your installed build.

A July 10, 2026 technical note mentions a “Very Performance” option, but that note applies to a beta update for the demo. It does not establish that the same option exists in the current full release. The developer’s September 15, 2026 Steam Deck announcement confirms handheld compatibility and controls, not a frame-rate result for every PC or Deck model.

What is officially established

Three different kinds of information are easy to confuse when tuning a game. For this title, they have different evidentiary weight:

  • Hardware requirements: the Steam store listing gives minimum and recommended components. These are compatibility targets, not benchmark measurements.
  • Handheld support: the developer announced Steam Deck Verified status and described handheld-oriented controls and interface design. That is a compatibility claim, not a guarantee for every scene, operating condition or Deck model.
  • Individual graphics settings and frame rates: the official material available for the current PC release does not document the menu, default values, image-quality trade-offs or setting-by-setting performance effects.

That distinction determines what can responsibly be recommended. You can use the published component tiers to judge whether your computer is in the intended range. You cannot infer a precise frames-per-second number, a guaranteed resolution, or a universal “low,” “medium” or “high” recipe from those tiers alone.

The published PC requirements

Requirement tier Operating system Processor Memory Graphics processor API Storage
Minimum 64-bit Windows 10 or later Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 8 GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, AMD Radeon RX 580 or Intel Arc A380 DirectX 12 14 GB available space
Recommended 64-bit Windows 10 or later Intel Core i5-9600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 16 GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce GTX 2070 Ti, AMD Radeon RX 5700 or Intel Arc B570 DirectX 12 14 GB available space

The GPU names above are reproduced exactly as they appear in the listing, including “NVIDIA GeForce GTX 2070 Ti.” Apparent naming oddities should not be silently corrected without confirmation from the publisher.

How to compare your computer with those tiers

Do this comparison before changing a slider. It identifies whether a graphics adjustment is a plausible remedy or whether the machine is outside the published baseline.

  1. Record the processor and installed memory. In Windows, open Settings > System > About and note the processor model and installed RAM. The model number matters; “Core i5” or “Ryzen 5” by itself is not enough to compare with the listed generations.
  2. Identify the active graphics processor. Open Task Manager > Performance and select each GPU entry, or use the display adapter information in Windows. If the system has integrated and discrete graphics, record which adapter the game is using rather than assuming the faster one is active.
  3. Check the operating system and graphics API baseline. The listing calls for 64-bit Windows 10 or later and DirectX 12. A compatible-looking GPU does not replace those software requirements.
  4. Confirm free storage. Reserve at least the listed 14 GB and leave additional working space for Windows, updates and shader or cache files. The store figure is the game requirement, not a recommendation for the entire drive.
  5. Write down the display conditions. Record monitor resolution, refresh rate, whether more than one monitor is connected, and whether the game is running in a window, borderless mode or exclusive fullscreen if those choices are exposed by your build.
  6. Describe the symptom precisely. “Slow” can mean a consistently low frame rate, brief stutters, long pauses when entering an area, input delay, visual corruption or a crash. Each symptom points to a different investigation.

If your hardware is below minimum

Below-minimum hardware is outside the developer’s stated baseline. Lowering an in-game option may reduce load if the game offers a suitable control, but there is no published setting combination that makes below-minimum performance predictable. Treat any improvement as system-specific rather than an expected result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your hardware falls between minimum and recommended

This is the largest uncertainty zone. A component between the two named tiers cannot be translated into a fixed frame-rate expectation. The CPU may be the limiting part in one scene while the GPU or available memory is the limiting part in another. Use your own repeatable observation rather than a number inferred from the store page.

If your hardware meets or exceeds recommended

Meeting the recommended list means the machine matches the developer’s higher specification target. It still does not promise a particular frame rate or image quality because the listing supplies no benchmark conditions, resolution, build number or frame-time data.

Why a requirements list cannot produce a settings recipe

A requirements table describes component classes, while a settings guide needs measurements. To prescribe a setting responsibly, you would need to know the current build, the tested resolution, the scene or workload, the default values, and how changing each control affects frame time and image quality. None of those measurements is supplied for the full PC release in the official material available here.

Do not treat a GPU’s position between two listed models as a linear performance scale. Different architectures, drivers and memory configurations can behave differently even when their names appear close. The same caution applies to CPUs: core count, per-core speed and the game’s workload all influence whether a processor is the constraint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, a requirement does not identify a visual preset. “Minimum” does not necessarily mean a documented low preset at a specified resolution, and “recommended” does not necessarily mean a documented high preset at a specified frame rate. Those interpretations would add conditions that the listing does not state.

What the available notes say about graphics controls

The current full-release menu is undocumented

The official store page does not enumerate resolution controls, quality presets, shadows, effects, anti-aliasing, upscaling, frame-rate limits or default values. It also provides no controlled comparison showing how any option changes performance. If your copy exposes such controls, use the labels and values displayed in that build; do not assume they match a guide written for another version.

The “Very Performance” reference is demo-only

A July 10, 2026 technical update, reproduced by Changelog.gg from Steam News, described a beta update for the demo. It mentioned “Optimizations for faster frame rate, especially on lower-end devices!” and a lower-profile “Very Performance” graphics setting. The scope is the demo’s beta branch.

That note does not verify that the full release currently contains a setting with that name, that it has the same behavior, or that selecting it produces a particular frame rate. Do not import the demo option into a full-release guide as though it were a tested preset. If you are running the demo beta, identify it explicitly when reporting results.

A controlled way to tune the game when options are available

The following is a general PC troubleshooting method, not a claim that these controls or effects have been measured specifically in Order of the Sinking Star. It prevents guesses from being presented as game facts.

  1. Capture a baseline. Note the game version or branch, resolution, display mode, refresh rate, hardware, driver version and every graphics value currently shown. Record what happens in a repeatable location or action for several minutes.
  2. Change one value at a time. If the menu offers a preset, apply it and record the exact label. If it offers individual controls, alter one control, restart only when the game requires it, and repeat the same scene. Changing several values at once hides the cause of an improvement or regression.
  3. Use a frame-time or frame-rate overlay consistently. Choose one monitoring method and leave its sampling behavior unchanged between trials. Compare the same workload rather than comparing an empty room with a busy scene.
  4. Separate smoothness from average speed. A high average can coexist with visible stutter if frame delivery is uneven. Record sudden drops, pauses and input delay separately from the average number shown by an overlay.
  5. Test the display resolution independently. If the game provides a resolution or render-scale control, test it without changing other values. A change in sharpness is expected when fewer pixels are rendered; whether the trade-off is worthwhile depends on your display and symptom.
  6. Apply the smallest change that fixes the symptom. If one option improves a repeatable hitch, keep the change and restore unrelated settings before continuing. This preserves image quality where it is not contributing to the problem.
  7. Recheck after updates. A patch can add, remove or rename controls and can alter performance. Keep the version alongside your notes so a result from one build is not mistaken for a rule applying to another.

Decision guide by hardware and symptom

Low performance from the first moment

First compare the active CPU, GPU and RAM with the minimum tier. If one or more parts are below it, the store listing offers no basis for promising smooth play through settings alone. If the parts meet minimum, verify that the game is using the intended GPU and that the tested resolution is recorded before drawing conclusions.

Performance that varies sharply between scenes

Record the location, action and time of each drop. A repeatable scene-specific problem is more useful than a general “it stutters” report. Compare CPU and GPU activity during the event if your monitoring tool provides it, but do not infer a game-specific bottleneck from component names alone.

Short pauses or hitching

Check whether the pause occurs during the same transition every time. Note whether it remains after restarting the game and whether it began after an update. These observations distinguish a repeatable workload from a one-time compilation or background event without claiming a particular cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Image looks soft after an adjustment

Restore the previous resolution or render-scale value if the loss of clarity is unacceptable, then test other controls individually if they are present. The official material does not identify which quality options exist or rank their visual impact, so avoid copying a generic “turn everything to low” prescription.

Crashes, launch failures or missing menus

Confirm the operating-system, DirectX 12 and storage requirements first. Record the exact error, build or branch and whether the menu is absent or merely different from a guide. A missing control is evidence that versions differ; it is not evidence that a hidden preset should be enabled through an unofficial tweak.

Steam Deck context

On September 15, 2026, the developer announced Steam Deck Verified status and wrote: “Enjoy the full experience of Order of the Sinking Star anywhere you go, featuring optimized controls, smooth performance, and interfaces tailored for handheld play.” This is promotional wording from the developer’s announcement, not an independent performance measurement.

The announcement supports choosing a Deck for portable play and for controls designed around a handheld interface. It does not establish identical performance across the LCD and OLED versions, different operating conditions, every game scene or every software update. It also does not make a handheld purchase necessary for a PC that already meets the listed requirements, nor does it turn a Deck into a graphics upgrade for a desktop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are deciding between your existing PC and a Deck, the supported comparison is about use: do you want portable play, and does the developer’s stated compatibility fit that use? The available information does not support a cross-model frame-rate ranking.

What to include when asking for a tailored diagnosis

A useful report lets another player distinguish hardware eligibility from a setting or version issue. Include:

  • CPU model, GPU model and installed RAM.
  • Windows edition and whether it is 64-bit.
  • Game version and whether it is the full release or the demo beta.
  • Display resolution, refresh rate and display mode.
  • Every graphics option and value visible in your current menu.
  • The exact symptom, when it starts, and whether it can be reproduced in the same location or action.
  • Observed frame-rate or frame-time behavior, identified as your own measurement rather than an official result.
  • Whether the game is using an integrated or discrete GPU when both are installed.

Without those details, a recommendation to use a particular preset would be speculation. With them, a helper can at least separate a requirement mismatch, a version difference and a setting change that deserves testing.

How to read future performance advice

A trustworthy full-release settings guide should name the build, device, resolution, display mode, driver conditions and test scene. It should show the exact control labels and explain both the image-quality cost and the measured change in frame time. Until that information is published or reproducibly measured, the official requirements remain the soundest baseline, while any exact preset or frame-rate promise should be treated as unverified.
