The best green screen for live streaming is the one that covers everything your camera sees, fits your room, and can be lit evenly. For a seated face-camera shot, a compact pop-up or chair-mounted screen may be enough; full-body or multi-person framing needs a wider, taller backdrop. Check your camera preview before buying, then compare setup, storage, mounting, and lighting.
How to choose a green screen for your stream
- Match the screen to your camera framing. A close face-camera shot needs less coverage than a full-body scene or a shot with multiple people. Open your camera preview, frame the shot you plan to use, and note every area behind you that must be replaced. The screen should cover that entire region, including space you enter when you move.
- Decide how often you will set it up and put it away. A collapsible case or pop-up panel is convenient for frequent teardown. Fabric is flexible and can cover a larger area, but it may need ironing or steaming and usually needs separate support, poles, or clamps.
- Check what the package includes. Confirm the actual screen dimensions, whether a stand or frame is included, and whether lighting is part of the bundle. Do not assume a product photo shows everything included.
- Plan where it will go. Measure the available floor and wall space, and leave room to position the screen behind you. For a seated setup in a small room, a chair-mounted screen can save floor space, but its coverage and compatibility depend on the chair and frame.
- Plan for even illumination. Uneven light across the backdrop makes color removal harder. Start with a surface that fills the camera view and avoid obvious shadows, bright reflections, or deep folds. Existing room lights may be enough; a bundled lighting kit is not a universal requirement.
Green is the common choice, but blue is also available on some screens. Choose based on the lighting and scene you use; neither color is automatically best for every setup.
Green-screen types and their tradeoffs

As a concrete size reference, Digital Camera World reported Neewer polyester backdrops in 1.8 × 2.8 m, 3 × 3.6 m, and 3 × 6 m sizes, with the material listed as 100% polyester, in 2026. These are examples of available dimensions, not a universal size recommendation. Inventory, variants, and bundles can change by seller and region.
Set up the screen and remove its color in OBS
A physical backdrop needs to fill the part of the camera image you want replaced. Smooth, evenly lit coverage helps; fix the physical setup before trying to compensate with aggressive filter settings.

- Position and secure the backdrop. Set it behind you so it fills the intended camera area. If using fabric, stretch or clamp it to limit folds and keep it from shifting.
- Light it as evenly as your room allows. Look for shadows, bright spots, and reflections across the surface. Adjust the screen or lights and inspect the camera preview rather than judging by eye from elsewhere in the room.
- Add the filter in OBS. In the Sources list, right-click your camera source and choose Filters. Under Effect Filters, add Chroma Key. OBS documents the filter as removing instances of a selected color from a source. The filter is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS Project: Chroma Key Filter.
- Select the key color. Choose green or blue to match the backdrop, or customize the color if needed. Watch the actual camera feed while adjusting.
- Adjust Similarity carefully. Similarity controls how aggressively OBS removes pixels close to the selected color. Raising it too far can remove parts of your subject or other pixels you meant to keep.
- Adjust Smoothness and Spill Reduction. Smoothness softens the removed area’s edges. Spill Reduction removes traces of the key color around the subject’s edges. Check hair, shoulders, and moving edges as you make changes.
- Test the finished shot. Move as you normally would on stream and check for uncovered backdrop, color spill, jagged edges, or parts of your subject disappearing. Reposition or relight the screen before pushing the filter further.
OBS’s documented default values are Similarity 400, Smoothness 80, and Spill Reduction 100 (OBS Project documentation dated 2022-01-12). They are software defaults, not universal recommendations; the right adjustments depend on your backdrop, lighting, camera, and subject.
Can you remove the background without a physical green screen?
Yes. NVIDIA Broadcast offers AI background removal, replacement, and blur as a software alternative. NVIDIA’s product page describes these effects as a way to customize a background without dedicated equipment or complex lighting. It requires a supported setup rather than working on every computer. At the time the page was reviewed, listed requirements included Windows 10 64-bit, a qualifying NVIDIA RTX GPU (including GeForce RTX 2060 or higher in the listed requirements), at least 8 GB RAM, specified driver versions, and an internet connection during installation. The page showed version 2.2.0 in one area and linked version 2.2.1 under requirements, so check NVIDIA’s current requirements and downloads before installing. A physical screen remains an option if your hardware is unsupported or you want a dedicated backdrop.
What to compare before you buy
- Coverage: Compare the product’s usable dimensions with the area visible in your camera preview, not just the size in its product photo.
- Portability and storage: Consider whether a case, pop-up frame, or foldable fabric suits the space where you stream and where you can store the screen.
- Wrinkle handling: Fabric may need preparation and tensioning; a collapsible or pop-up design may be faster to deploy.
- Mounting: Confirm whether stands, poles, frames, or clamps are included or must be purchased separately.
- Lighting: Check whether lights or reflectors are bundled, but do not pay for them if your existing setup already covers your needs.
- Fit and availability: Check the exact model, dimensions, included accessories, price, and local stock with the seller. Product variants and bundles change, so a fixed price or bundle description may not apply everywhere.
Common green-screen problems and fixes
- The backdrop is still visible around the frame: It does not cover the full camera view. Expand or reposition it, or tighten the camera framing.
- Parts of your face, hair, or clothing disappear: Similarity may be too high, or the selected key color may overlap with something you are wearing. Lower Similarity, check the selected color, and watch the preview as you adjust.
- A green or blue outline remains around you: Check for colored light reflecting from the backdrop onto your edges. Improve the lighting or your distance from the screen, then adjust Spill Reduction in small increments.
- The edge around you looks harsh or uneven: Check folds, shadows, and uneven illumination on the physical screen. Smoothness can soften edges, but first improve the backdrop coverage and light.
- The screen moves, sags, or will not fit: Recheck the frame or chair compatibility and the support included with the product. Fabric may require separate poles, stands, or clamps.
- The software-only effect is unavailable: Confirm that your Windows version, GPU, drivers, and other system requirements meet NVIDIA’s current requirements.
