OBS Studio is the best-supported starting point for live streamers who want local recording alongside a configurable broadcast setup. It can record while you stream or record offline, lets you choose a save path and format, and supports selecting audio tracks. For selective recording and documented multitrack workflows, consider Streamlabs Desktop. For straightforward gameplay capture or instant replay on compatible hardware, NVIDIA App and AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition are alternatives.
This is a feature-based recommendation from official product documentation, not a comparative performance test. The right choice depends on whether you need a full scene-based production setup, separate audio for editing, or a simpler capture tool.
How to choose local recording software
Local recording saves a copy of your stream or gameplay to your own storage. Before choosing an app, decide what you need the recording to do after the broadcast.
- Production controls: Do you need scenes, sources, overlays, and a full broadcast workflow, or only gameplay capture and replay?
- Editing flexibility: Will you need your microphone, game audio, and other sound sources on separate tracks?
- Reliability and storage: Can you choose a suitable file format and save location, and do you have enough free disk space for long or high-quality recordings?
- Hardware fit: Can your computer handle the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity? Software compatibility alone does not guarantee that it can record smoothly at every setting.
Best local recording software options
1. OBS Studio: best general-purpose starting point
OBS Studio is the strongest fit here for streamers who want a configurable studio workflow and local recording in the same application. Its standard recording guide explains how to record while broadcasting or record only for offline use, choose a recording path and format, and select audio tracks in Advanced output. The OBS Project describes OBS as free and open source in its official repository.

OBS recommends MKV when an ungraceful application or system stop is a concern because it avoids corrupting the entire recording. If your editor or upload workflow needs MP4, OBS includes a remuxing option to convert the recording. Check that your editing software accepts the recording format and selected audio tracks before an important session.
OBS’s system requirements guidance cautions that a compatible computer is not necessarily capable of recording or streaming at every desired setting. Workload depends on encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity. Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then run a short local test using the scenes and sources planned for the actual stream.

2. Streamlabs Desktop: for selective recording and multitrack workflows
Streamlabs Desktop is an alternative if you want guided setup in a packaged desktop workflow. Its getting-started guide documents a recording-only choice and the option to import OBS settings. Streamlabs also documents multitrack recording, which can separate microphone and desktop audio for editing, and selective recording, which lets you choose what appears in the saved recording.
Those features may suit a creator who wants a different recording mix from the live output. The documentation supports those workflow distinctions; it does not establish that Streamlabs is faster, more reliable, or better than OBS across computers.

3. NVIDIA App: for simpler capture on supported NVIDIA systems
For gameplay recording or highlights without managing a complete broadcast production, NVIDIA documents Record and Instant Replay through the NVIDIA App overlay. Its 2024 feature overview describes microphone capture, sound-source selection, separate microphone audio saving, quality controls, and a save-location setting. Check current app behavior and hardware support for your system before relying on a particular control.
4. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition: for capture and replay on supported systems
AMD’s Adrenalin software includes local recording, desktop and game capture settings, microphone and camera selection, and Instant Replay. AMD says Instant Replay can capture the previous 20 minutes, while noting that available options vary by system configuration. Its recording guide was last updated on 2024-11-11 and illustrates steps using Adrenalin 23.9.1 and an RX 7900 XTX. Controls may not appear identically on every current system. AMD also warns that gameplay recordings can be very large, so check available storage.

Set up a reliable local recording
Choose a format with recovery in mind
In OBS, choose MKV when protection against an ungraceful stop matters. Remux to MP4 when required by your editor or upload destination. A safer container cannot replace checking that the recording is being written to the intended folder and that the disk has room.
Configure audio tracks before going live
If you intend to adjust voice and game or desktop audio independently in post, enable and assign separate tracks before recording. OBS supports track selection through Advanced output; Streamlabs documents multitrack workflows. Twitch’s Local Recording guide also discusses track separation. The page’s publication or update date is not established here, so use it as supplementary guidance and confirm the controls in your current software version.

Confirm the save path and storage
Set a known recording folder and verify free space before a long session. High-quality or lengthy gameplay files can consume substantial storage. An external SSD can be a convenient place to keep recordings, but it is optional rather than a requirement.
Check GPU assignment on laptops
On a system with integrated and discrete GPUs, OBS warns that running OBS on the integrated GPU while the game uses the discrete GPU can interfere with Game Capture or performance. Consult OBS’s GPU Selection Guide and check which GPU each application is using.
Test the actual workload
There is no universally best resolution or encoder setting established for every streamer. Encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and the computer’s configuration affect workload. Record a short sample with the same scenes, sources, and intended settings as the real broadcast; check video smoothness, audio separation, file playback, and save location before depending on a long session.
Common recording problems and fixes
- Game Capture does not work or performance suffers on a laptop: Check whether OBS is assigned to the integrated GPU while the game runs on the discrete GPU. Use the OBS GPU Selection Guide to review GPU assignment.
- The recording is missing or saved somewhere unexpected: Check the application’s recording path and verify that the output file appears there during or after a brief test.
- The microphone and game audio cannot be adjusted separately: Configure multitrack recording and assign sources before starting the session; tracks cannot be separated retroactively if they were recorded together.
- A recording may be damaged after a crash or power loss: For OBS, use MKV when resilience to an ungraceful stop is important, then remux to MP4 if needed.
- The recording stops, fails, or strains the system: Check available disk space and reduce workload by revisiting encoder, resolution, FPS, or scene complexity. Run another short test before returning to a long broadcast.
- A documented control is missing in NVIDIA or AMD software: Confirm hardware and system support. AMD explicitly notes that options vary by configuration, and its illustrated Adrenalin steps use a specific older software version and GPU.
