Rockstar’s built-in options provide separate ray-traced effects, while path-traced lighting and volumetric clouds are advertised by the third-party AuraV mod for GTA V Enhanced on PC. Choose the native route for supported, unmodified rendering, or use AuraV in Story Mode if those specific effects are your priority.
First, identify which graphics feature you actually want
The phrase “path tracing and volumetric clouds” combines features from two different configurations. GTA V Enhanced includes Rockstar’s own ray-traced effects, but the reviewed Rockstar descriptions do not list a native path-tracing mode or a native volumetric-cloud control. AuraV, a separate PC mod, is the source that explicitly advertises path-traced lighting and volumetric clouds.

| Feature | GTA V Enhanced (native) | AuraV on GTA V Enhanced PC |
|---|---|---|
| Ray-traced effects | Yes. Rockstar documents ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows and reflections, with later updates adding high-resolution ray-traced reflections and a second RTGI bounce. | Uses the mod’s own visual overhaul in addition to the game and platform requirements. |
| Full path tracing | Not listed in the reviewed Rockstar or Steam descriptions. | Advertised by the creator as path-traced lighting and shadows. |
| Volumetric clouds | Not listed as a native setting. | Advertised as a rebuilt sky with volumetric clouds and a new atmosphere. |
| Volumetric lighting | Lighting Quality enables volumetric lighting for some local light sources and affects shadows cast by vehicle headlights; it is not described as a cloud control. | May be visually affected by the mod’s atmosphere and lighting changes, but the creator’s documented cloud feature is separate from Rockstar’s Lighting Quality description. |
| Platform | Enhanced versions supported by Rockstar; the PC settings discussed here apply to the PC release. | GTA V Enhanced on PC, according to the creator’s documentation. |
| Hardware statement | Rockstar does not provide a universal PC GPU tier in the material reviewed here. | The creator says AuraV is built for NVIDIA RTX graphics cards, without naming a minimum or recommended model. |
This distinction prevents the most common setup mistake: raising Lighting Quality and expecting clouds, or enabling every native ray-tracing option and assuming the game has become path traced.

What the native ray-tracing options do
- Ray-traced ambient occlusion (RTAO): Adds ray-traced contact and environmental shading where the option is available.
- Ray-traced global illumination (RTGI): Handles bounced indirect light. Rockstar’s later Enhanced notes add a second RTGI bounce option.
- Ray-traced shadows: Uses ray tracing for supported shadow effects.
- Ray-traced reflections: Adds reflective ray tracing. Title Update 1.71 added an option for high-resolution ray-traced reflections.
These are separate effects with separate costs. The published material does not establish a single universally best combination, a fixed frame-rate impact for each control, or a current PC preset that works across all hardware. Treat the options as trade-offs and test them on your own system.
Suggested native priority order
- Set your target resolution and refresh rate first. Keep those fixed while testing so each comparison is meaningful.
- Enable the ray-traced effect that matters most in the scenes you play. Reflections are easiest to judge around wet roads, vehicle paint and glass; RTGI is most apparent in areas with mixed direct and indirect light; shadows are easiest to evaluate around vehicles and strong point or directional lights.
- If you have performance headroom, test high-resolution ray-traced reflections next. This is a distinct control, not a replacement for ordinary reflection quality.
- Test the second RTGI bounce separately. It changes indirect-light behavior and should not be evaluated at the same time as several other changes.
- After every change, revisit the same route or save location. Record whether image quality improved enough to justify the performance change.
How to interpret Lighting Quality
Rockstar describes Lighting Quality as affecting shadows from vehicle headlights and enabling volumetric lighting effects for some local light sources. That means it can improve the appearance of illuminated fog, dust or nearby light beams in supported conditions. It does not establish a volumetric-cloud setting, and increasing it will not turn the sky into a path-traced cloud system.
For native play, set Lighting Quality according to the value you place on headlight shadows and local-light volumetrics. Judge it at night, in foggy weather and near vehicles rather than by looking only at daytime cloud cover.
Route 2: AuraV for path-traced lighting and volumetric clouds
If your priority is specifically path-traced lighting plus volumetric clouds, AuraV is the documented route in this material. Its creator describes a rebuilt sky with volumetric clouds and a new atmosphere, path-traced lighting and shadows, wind-shaped ocean waves, and reworked rain, lightning, heat haze, smoke and skin lighting.
Those are mod features, not built-in GTA V Enhanced settings. They also change more than the clouds: the atmosphere, weather effects, water and character lighting are part of the advertised overhaul.
Compatibility and prerequisites
- Use GTA V Enhanced on PC. The creator’s documentation does not describe AuraV as a console feature.
- Use an NVIDIA RTX graphics card. This is the creator’s stated hardware target; no specific minimum or recommended RTX model is established.
- Start Story Mode before opening the mod’s settings. The creator says the settings panel is opened with F10.
- Keep expectations system-specific. No comparable benchmark in the available material establishes a universal frame rate, resolution target or “best” RTX tier for AuraV.
Safe configuration sequence
- Install and launch the Enhanced PC version in the configuration required by AuraV’s current creator documentation. Do not assume instructions for the older version of the game apply to Enhanced.
- Start Story Mode, not an online session, before changing AuraV options. Press F10 to open the documented settings panel.
- Save a baseline screenshot or short capture with the mod disabled or at its initial state. Use the same weather, time and camera position for later comparisons.
- Enable the path-traced lighting and cloud-related options you want, then change one group at a time. Start with the sky and atmosphere, followed by lighting and shadows, then weather and water effects.
- Walk or drive through several representative scenes: a bright daytime vista, a sunset or sunrise, a night street with headlights, a rainy road, and a dense urban area with smoke or haze.
- If performance becomes unacceptable, reverse the last change rather than disabling everything. The available documentation does not identify which individual AuraV control has the largest cost on every system, so controlled testing is more reliable than a universal ranking.
- Keep a separate native profile if you also play unmodded or online content. A modded visual profile should not be treated as a substitute for Rockstar’s native settings.
What AuraV’s description does and does not prove
The creator’s wording supports the presence of path-traced lighting, volumetric clouds and the listed atmospheric reworks. It does not provide a GPU minimum, an average frame rate, a fixed resolution recommendation, or a numerical quality/performance ratio. Avoid treating a particular RTX model as either necessary or sufficient without current, system-specific testing.
Native Enhanced versus AuraV: choose by priority
| Your priority | Better starting route | Reason | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official, unmodified rendering | Native Enhanced | Uses Rockstar’s documented ray-traced effects and game settings. | No documented native path-tracing or volumetric-cloud mode. |
| Path-traced lighting | AuraV | The creator explicitly advertises path-traced lighting and shadows. | Third-party mod; PC-only in the documentation and targeted at NVIDIA RTX hardware. |
| Volumetric clouds | AuraV | The creator explicitly advertises volumetric clouds and a rebuilt atmosphere. | Clouds are part of a wider visual overhaul, not an isolated Rockstar slider. |
| Headlight shadows and local light beams | Native Lighting Quality | Rockstar specifically connects this setting with vehicle-headlight shadows and some local volumetric lighting. | It should not be interpreted as a cloud setting. |
| High-resolution reflections | Native Enhanced ray-traced reflections | Title Update 1.71 added the documented high-resolution option. | The material does not quantify its PC performance cost. |
| Maximum visual experimentation | AuraV, tested cautiously | It changes lighting, sky, weather, water and character lighting together. | More variables make troubleshooting and performance tuning less predictable. |
A practical image-quality and performance testing method
Because no current comparable benchmark establishes a universal best preset, use a repeatable test rather than copying an FPS claim from another system.

- Quality Visuals: The VG270K 27" IPS monitor with 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
- AMD FreeSync Premium Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync Premium, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
- Quick Refresh Rate: Different content has different refresh rate and resolution requirements. If you are playing an FPS or racing game, you will need a monitor with a high refresh rate. However, if you are doing office work or streaming videos, a higher resolution will be more beneficial. With DFR technology, users can choose a higher resolution, or a higher refresh rate based on what is suitable for them.
- Responsive: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter if the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting.
- ZeroFrame Design: With a Nitro VG270K monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.
Build a fixed test route
- Choose one dense city location, one open landscape, one night scene with headlights, and one rainy or foggy scene.
- Use the same display resolution, refresh-rate limit, weather and time of day for each pass.
- Capture the same camera angles. Clouds, reflections and indirect light can look different from one angle to another.
Change one variable at a time
For native Enhanced, test each ray-traced effect independently, then test high-resolution reflections and the second RTGI bounce independently. For AuraV, begin with its baseline, enable one feature group, and return to the same route. If several controls change together, you will know only that the combined result changed, not which option caused it.
Decide what “best” means for you
- Visual-first: Keep the effects that visibly improve reflections, bounced light, clouds or weather in your normal play areas, even if you need to reduce less noticeable settings.
- Consistency-first: Prefer a stable frame rate and remove the last effect that causes stutter or uneven pacing.
- Mixed use: Maintain a native profile for ordinary play and a separate AuraV profile for screenshots or cinematic sessions.
Do not transfer the console targets published by Rockstar to PC or AuraV. Rockstar’s 2022 console announcement described a 30 FPS target for Fidelity Mode and a 60 FPS target for Performance Mode and Performance RT on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Those are console-mode targets, not a PC recommendation or a benchmark for the mod.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“Lighting Quality will give me volumetric clouds.”
Correction: Lighting Quality is documented for vehicle-headlight shadows and volumetric lighting from some local lights. Use AuraV if volumetric clouds are the specific goal.
“Ray tracing and path tracing are the same setting.”
Correction: Native Enhanced exposes separate ray-traced effects. Path-traced lighting is the feature explicitly advertised by AuraV, not a native toggle identified in the reviewed Rockstar descriptions.
“Every RTX card should run AuraV at the same settings.”
Correction: The creator identifies NVIDIA RTX as the target family but does not publish a minimum model or universal performance tier. Test on your own card and resolution.
“A console 60 FPS mode tells me what my PC will achieve.”
Correction: The 30 FPS and 60 FPS figures are targets for named console graphics modes. They do not establish PC performance for native Enhanced or AuraV.
“I can tune everything at once and still know what helped.”
Correction: Return to a fixed route and change one control or feature group at a time. Keep notes or screenshots so you can undo a change that harms clarity or frame pacing.

Platform, mode and support boundaries
The path-tracing and volumetric-cloud route described here is a PC route because AuraV is documented for GTA V Enhanced on PC. The native ray-traced effects are the appropriate comparison when you are on a console or when you need an unmodified installation. AuraV’s documented F10 panel is available after starting Story Mode; do not assume the same controls or behavior in online play.
Graphics options, patch behavior and mod compatibility can change as Rockstar updates Enhanced or the mod creator revises AuraV. Check the current creator documentation and Rockstar’s current patch notes before installing after an update, especially if a previously working profile stops loading or an option disappears.

Native, balanced ray tracing
- Use the native Enhanced ray-traced effects that you can clearly see in your regular routes.
- Enable high-resolution ray-traced reflections only after checking reflections at your chosen resolution.
- Test the second RTGI bounce separately rather than assuming it is automatically the best value.
- Set Lighting Quality based on headlight shadows and local volumetric lighting, not cloud appearance.
Native, image-quality priority
- Enable the ray-traced effects most visible in your preferred scenes.
- Try high-resolution ray-traced reflections and the second RTGI bounce as separate experiments.
- Accept that the material reviewed here does not provide a universal FPS cost; keep the combination only if your system remains acceptably smooth.
AuraV, effects-first
- Confirm GTA V Enhanced on PC and an NVIDIA RTX card.
- Launch Story Mode and open the AuraV panel with F10.
- Establish a baseline, then enable path-traced lighting and volumetric-cloud features in controlled steps.
- Evaluate the wider changes to atmosphere, rain, lightning, heat haze, smoke, ocean waves and skin lighting before deciding whether the complete overhaul suits your play.
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
It supports a clear two-route answer: native Enhanced for Rockstar’s ray-traced effects, and AuraV for the explicitly advertised path-traced lighting and volumetric clouds. It supports the meaning of Lighting Quality, the later additions of high-resolution ray-traced reflections and a second RTGI bounce, AuraV’s F10 Story Mode panel, and the creator’s NVIDIA RTX target.
It does not support a universal PC preset, a particular required RTX model, a guaranteed frame rate, or a fixed performance cost for any AuraV or native control. Any recommendation that presents those figures as universal is making a claim beyond the documented evidence.
