Choose LSPDFR instead if you want a police simulator, a graphics overhaul if atmosphere matters most, or FiveM if you want community-run multiplayer. These are separate experiences, and none should be used in GTA Online.
Check whether your copy is GTA V Legacy or GTA V Enhanced before downloading anything. Their loaders and mod compatibility can differ, and Rockstar updates can temporarily break working setups.

Popularity is not enough to make a mod worthwhile. Favor projects with current documentation, a clear edition target, named dependencies, transparent files and a practical uninstall path.
Best overall: Menyoo 2.0
Menyoo is the strongest starting point because it adds repeatable experimentation without replacing the campaign. Its Story Mode trainer can spawn vehicles and pedestrians, place objects, alter weather and time, teleport the player, and change characters. The current project page lists F8 as the default menu key and supports keyboard or controller navigation: Menyoo’s project page.

- Install the required current loader according to the mod’s instructions.

Menyoo is a trainer, not a new campaign. It can also trivialize missions, so keep a clean save and never load it in GTA Online.
Best major gameplay overhaul: LSPDFR
LSPD First Response turns GTA V into a law-enforcement simulator. You can patrol, answer dispatch calls, conduct traffic stops, pursue suspects and build a customized police setup.
Why it is worth the extra work
Unlike a trainer, LSPDFR supplies a structured loop that remains engaging after the novelty of spawning vehicles wears off. Callout packs, police cars, uniforms and equipment can extend it substantially.
Install a small, testable setup
- Download LSPDFR and the current RAGE Plugin Hook from the official installation guide: LCPDFR installation instructions.
- Extract the base files into the folder containing
GTA5.exe. - Launch and confirm that RAGE Plugin Hook and LSPDFR load.
- Test a patrol or callout before adding anything else.
- Add one callout pack, then one vehicle or uniform package, testing after each change.
Script Hook V alone is not a substitute for RAGE Plugin Hook. LSPDFR and its plugins may stop working after a Rockstar update until their authors release compatible builds.

Check before installing
- Verify whether the current release targets Legacy, Enhanced or both.
- Check whether it uses an installer, OpenIV files, ReShade or another framework.
- Allow for substantial GPU, VRAM and storage demands; the actual cost depends on resolution and settings.
- Back up the original files so you can restore the vanilla presentation.
Realism is subjective, and a graphics overhaul can conflict with other weather, lighting or post-processing packages. Install one visual package at a time.
If you want a new multiplayer game, use FiveM
FiveM is a separate multiplayer platform built around custom servers, not a trainer for Story Mode and not a modification of official GTA Online. Servers may offer role-play, racing, jobs, economies and other custom modes, but rules, queues, moderation, voice requirements and monetization vary by community.
FiveM requires a legitimate, fully updated PC installation of GTA V; pirated copies are not supported. See FiveM’s purchase and requirements documentation. Choose a reputable server and follow its rules rather than assuming every server provides the same quality or privacy.
Vehicle, map and character add-ons
Established communities such as GTA5-Mods.com and LCPDFR host add-on vehicles, emergency fleets, aircraft, interiors, weapons, clothing and maps. Treat these as a library to curate, not a guarantee that every upload is compatible or trustworthy.
Add-ons are usually easier to manage
An add-on leaves the original model available and is generally easier to remove than a replacement. Read the complete installation instructions and record every file you add.

Know the limits
- Some packs require a compatible gameconfig, heap adjustment or packfile-limit tool.
- Meta-file conflicts can cause crashes even when each vehicle works alone.
- Install incrementally; a large collection increases streaming and stability problems.
- Confirm Legacy or Enhanced support before copying files.
Chaos and challenge mods
Chaos-style mods periodically apply random effects such as weather changes, hazards, altered player conditions or unexpected spawns. They are excellent for streamers and short challenge runs, but randomness can interrupt missions or become irritating. Treat Chaos Mod V as a compatibility-dependent candidate: check its current creator documentation before downloading rather than relying on an old list.
Other gameplay overhauls
Zombies, gang-war systems, crime-management scripts, companions, heist packs and new careers can create a genuinely different loop. They are also more fragile than trainers because they may depend on several libraries, alter saves or conflict with missions.
- Check every dependency and supported edition.
- Determine whether the project is maintained.
- Test it on a separate save.
- Install only one major overhaul at a time.
How to install GTA V mods safely
Prepare a recoverable baseline
- Use Windows PC; this workflow does not apply to PlayStation or Xbox.
- Identify Legacy or Enhanced and keep their files separate.
- Find the game root folder containing
GTA5.exe. - Back up saves and configuration files.
- Launch the unmodified game once.
- Download only from the creator or an established mod community.
- Keep a written list of every file each mod adds or replaces.
Understand the foundation tools
- Script Hook V: common foundation for many ASI scripts; official source: Alexander Blade’s Script Hook V page.
- OpenIV: archive browser and file-modification tool; official site: OpenIV.
- RAGE Plugin Hook: central to LSPDFR.
- ScriptHookVDotNet: required only by mods whose instructions specify it.
Do not assume a Legacy ASI or OpenIV workflow applies to Enhanced. Enhanced projects may require different loaders, and Menyoo’s current requirements describe separate arrangements for the two editions.
Use one-mod-at-a-time testing
- Install the foundation required by the selected mod.
- Launch Story Mode and test the mod alone.
- Play long enough to trigger its main feature.
- Add the next mod only after the baseline remains stable.
Why mods stop working after updates
Rockstar updates can invalidate Script Hook V, RAGE Plugin Hook, loaders and archive changes. Legacy and Enhanced can diverge as well. A July 2026 community compatibility snapshot recorded Legacy build 3889.0 and Enhanced build 1158.13, but build numbers change and must be checked again at LCPDFR’s update guidance.
OpenIV’s mods folder is an overlay: old modified archives can override newly updated originals and prevent the game from launching. OpenIV explains its modding position and that it does not support GTA Online at its official policy page.

Recovery procedure
- Stop launching the broken setup repeatedly.
- Temporarily rename the
scriptsfolder. - Remove or rename ASI files one at a time.
- Restore original archives or verify the game installation.
- Check current Script Hook V and RAGE Plugin Hook compatibility.
- Reinstall mods individually until the failing file is identified.
Common symptoms and fixes
Scripts do nothing
Check the edition, loader, root-folder location, Story Mode launch and any required ScriptHookVDotNet or RAGE Plugin Hook dependency. BattlEye settings may also prevent a modded Story Mode launch; use the current Rockstar instructions rather than an old menu path.

Reduce texture quality, reflections, shadows and population density, and disable competing ReShade, weather or lighting packages. High-resolution assets can exceed VRAM and streaming capacity.
Crashes near Los Santos Customs
Remove the newest vehicle first. Invalid vehicle metadata, conflicting handling entries, replacement mistakes and limit problems are common causes.
Suspicious automatic installers
Prefer archives with visible contents and destinations. Scan downloads, avoid crack sites and “mod menu” pages, and never install unrelated browser extensions. Menyoo’s project page also warns about fake downloads and unofficial paid copies.

Police role-player
Use LSPDFR with RAGE Plugin Hook, one callout pack and one vehicle or uniform package.
Cinematic player
Use one graphics overhaul and, if needed, a single camera or trainer utility. Avoid stacking gameplay frameworks.
Multiplayer player
Install FiveM, choose one reputable server and keep Story Mode trainer files out of official GTA Online.
Keep GTA Online completely separate
Do not use trainers, ASI plugins, OpenIV modifications or injected scripts in GTA Online. OpenIV states that it has never supported GTA Online, and Menyoo warns that online mod use violates Rockstar’s terms and can result in a permanent ban. Disabling BattlEye for a modded Story Mode setup is not permission to cheat online. Keep a clean installation or separate modded and unmodded profiles where practical.
