Bandai Namco describes Guardian as a high-defense shield user who can withstand powerful attacks. Its named abilities are Whirlwind, a wind-churning cyclone, and Wings of Salvation, a leap and dive that protects an area. Those descriptions establish the character’s defensive and team-protection identity, but do not specify damage, duration, or defensive percentages. Build around that identity: use the shield to block and counterattack, and take advantage of Guardian’s reach and strength-oriented weapon options. You can lean more toward personal survival, team support, or damage without abandoning the shield-and-counterattack core.
Which relics should you equip before an expedition?
Choose relics before deployment; their effects can include character-specific bonuses. Bandai Namco says a relic can have up to three random effects, and a character can equip up to three relics on designated vessels. Since relic effects vary, prioritize useful effects rather than expecting an exact inventory.

- Skill uptime: Look for [Guardian] Increased duration for character skill. Skill cooldown reduction is another useful supporting effect.
- Guarding and retaliation: Consider [Guardian] Reflect a portion of the damage received when an ability is activated. The specialist build guide also recommends effects that reward successful guards.
- Team support: If you want to help nearby allies, consider [Guardian] Slowly restores nearby allies’ HP while Art is active.
- Survivability and resource generation: Strength, Vigor, and Endurance bonuses, along with additional Art gauge from defeating enemies, are supporting options.
- Encounter-specific defense: When you know the Nightlord’s damage type or weakness, favor matching resistance, damage-negation, or elemental-attack effects.

What weapons should you use during the run?
Baseline: halberd and shield

A great spear or hammer can also suit Guardian’s strength-oriented approach. Compare the weapon you find with the encounter and its available passives; there is no reason to hold out for a specific weapon if another useful option drops.
Weapon passives to prioritize
Look for passives that complement your role and the Nightlord: improved guarding ability, guard breaking, charged attacks, healing on attacks, or damage negation. Elemental attack and elemental negation can be useful when they match the target. Weapon passives activate while you hold the weapon and can stack with other benefits, but the effects available in a run are not guaranteed. How should you adapt the build to the Nightlord and game mode?
Use the relic and weapon effects the expedition actually offers. If the Nightlord’s weakness or damage affinity is known, compare it with your available attack and resistance options instead of following a universal damage-type prescription. Loot, enemies, and bosses can change between sessions, so the strongest setup is the one that fits both the encounter and your drops.
- In co-op: Protection and nearby-ally healing may be more valuable when you want to support the group.
- Solo: Personal sustain and reliable damage may better serve your run.
- For a defensive role: Prioritize guarding, damage negation, and survival, while keeping counterattacks available.
- For more damage: Retain the shield-and-counterattack foundation, then take attack passives and weapons that suit the matchup.
These solo-versus-co-op priorities are practical build inferences, not measured performance results. Bandai Namco’s starter guide confirms that both modes are available.
What changed for Guardian in Patch 1.03.2?
Bandai Namco’s January 15, 2026 Patch 1.03.2 notes say Guardian received increased damage negation against physical and various elemental attacks, plus increased Guard Boost while guarding. The patch also increased the power of shockwaves from the relic effect [Guardian] Successful guards send out shockwaves while ability is active. The notes describe qualitative increases, not specific percentages or measured build outcomes. See the official Patch 1.03.2 notes.
Those changes support a guard-centered setup, but they do not make one weapon or relic combination mandatory. The official patch page links to a March 31, 2026 hotfix notice; the Guardian changes described here are those listed in Patch 1.03.2.
