Start with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC), then play the six included campaigns in release order. That means Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4. Halo Support specifically recommends Combat Evolved Anniversary for players who want release order, while Xbox’s post-show guide presents MCC as the practical entry point after season one.
The television series is an adaptation set in Halo’s universe, not a direct continuation of the game campaigns. The games therefore give you the franchise’s original campaign history rather than the next episode of the show’s plot.

Why the show and games are connected, but not the same story
Official descriptions from Amblin and Paramount Press Express present the series as a live-action drama based on the Xbox franchise. Its premise is a 26th-century war between humanity and the Covenant, with Master Chief and other familiar elements from Halo’s universe. That shared setting makes the games a natural next step, but the available official descriptions do not establish one continuous show-and-game timeline.
Xbox’s post-show guide treats MCC as a franchise “history lesson,” recommending it to viewers who have finished the first season. That framing is useful: you are exploring the campaign stories that established Halo, not loading a game that picks up exactly where a television episode ends. Characters, events, and details can therefore differ from the adaptation without either version being a mistake.

Which Halo game should you play first after the show?
Best default: Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is the strongest starting point for a newcomer. It is the first campaign in the release-order route recommended by Halo Support, and it supplies the foundation that later games assume. You meet the core conflict, learn what makes the Halo installations important, and follow the beginning of Master Chief’s game journey before sequels expand the setting.
Play it through MCC rather than trying to assemble the older releases separately. MCC puts six campaigns in one collection and lets you move from one story to the next without changing products. The Anniversary edition preserves Combat Evolved’s campaign while presenting it as the collection’s modern entry point; if you want the original game’s progression and context, this is the appropriate first selection.
Why not begin with a later numbered game?
Starting with Halo 3 or Halo 4 can work for a returning fan, but it skips important setup. Later campaigns presume that you already understand relationships, conflicts, and terminology introduced earlier. A first-time player coming from the show gets a clearer introduction by beginning at the same point Halo Support gives to release-order players.

Xbox’s product material describes MCC as six games in one integrated experience for PC and Xbox One. Xbox’s post-show guide identifies the campaigns below. The “chronology note” explains why release order and in-universe order differ.
| Campaign | Place in release-order route | Chronology note |
|---|---|---|
| Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary | 1 | The release-order starting point recommended by Halo Support. |
| Halo 2 | 2 | Continues the central conflict after Combat Evolved. |
| Halo 3 | 3 | Follows Halo 2 as the next numbered campaign. |
| Halo 3: ODST | 4 | A side story associated with the Halo 3 era. |
| Halo: Reach | 5 | A prequel set shortly before Combat Evolved. |
| Halo 4 | 6 | Moves the numbered series forward after the original trilogy. |
The table is a playing plan, not a ranking. MCC includes all six campaigns, and the collection is valuable precisely because it lets you experience their changing perspectives and eras in a single package.
The recommended release-order playthrough
1. Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
Begin here. Combat Evolved establishes the basic human-Covenant war as experienced by Master Chief and introduces the ringworld mystery that drives the campaign. The campaign’s position matters more than whether you prefer its visuals or a later game’s mechanics: it is the narrative and design baseline for the series.

- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
In MCC, select the Combat Evolved Anniversary campaign and finish it before moving to the next title. If you have watched only the series, expect familiar names and concepts to appear in different arrangements. Treat this game as the franchise’s original opening chapter rather than as a scene-by-scene adaptation tie-in.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →2. Halo 2
Play Halo 2 second. It broadens the conflict and gives the Covenant side substantially more perspective, while continuing the consequences of Combat Evolved. Its campaign assumes that the first game has introduced you to the major factions and the significance of the ring installations.
Keeping Halo 2 immediately after Combat Evolved makes its character and political developments easier to follow. Do not move it behind Reach just because Reach is earlier in the fictional timeline; release order preserves the way the series originally revealed its world and its major reversals.
3. Halo 3
Halo 3 is the third release-order campaign and the next step after Halo 2. It pays off the original trilogy’s central conflict, so playing it before any prequel gives its returning characters and stakes their intended buildup.
For a first playthrough, keep the campaign sequence intact rather than interleaving missions from other games. MCC makes it tempting to jump between tiles, but a continuous Halo 3 run avoids importing information from later or earlier settings before the story expects you to know it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute4. Halo 3: ODST
Halo 3: ODST comes fourth in the recommended route. It is a side story set in the Halo 3 era and follows a different kind of soldier from Master Chief. That change in viewpoint is part of its purpose: the campaign shows how the wider conflict affects personnel who do not have the Chief’s unique role.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Playing ODST after Halo 3 lets you recognize the period it occupies without interrupting the original trilogy’s momentum. It also prevents a newcomer from mistaking the campaign’s different perspective for a separate continuity.
5. Halo: Reach
Play Halo: Reach fifth in release order. Reach is a prequel set shortly before Combat Evolved, so its story looks backward in the fictional timeline even though the game was released later. Experiencing it after ODST preserves the collection’s release-history flow and lets the prequel function as a retrospective expansion of the setting.
Reach can be emotionally and thematically stronger when you already understand what the earlier games establish about the conflict. You do not need to treat its prequel status as a reason to move it to the front of your first playthrough.
6. Halo 4
Finish the initial MCC route with Halo 4. It follows the original trilogy’s era and begins the next numbered phase of Master Chief’s game story. Reaching it after the other five campaigns gives you the most complete context for the series’ evolution from Combat Evolved through the later setting.
If the television series made you especially interested in Master Chief, Halo 4 is a useful endpoint for this first collection run because it shows where the numbered games go after the trilogy. It is not a direct continuation of the show’s season-one narrative.
Release order versus chronological order
There are two defensible routes, but they serve different goals. Halo Support’s onboarding advice favors release order, which is why it is the default here. Reach’s placement creates the main choice: its events occur shortly before Combat Evolved, yet the game itself arrived after Halo 3 and ODST.

| Route | Sequence | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release order | Combat Evolved Anniversary → Halo 2 → Halo 3 → Halo 3: ODST → Halo: Reach → Halo 4 | Newcomers who want the way the franchise originally unfolded. | Reach’s prequel story is experienced after the games it precedes chronologically. |
| Chronological flavor | Halo: Reach → Combat Evolved Anniversary → Halo 2 → Halo 3 → Halo 3: ODST → Halo 4 | Players who prioritize in-universe chronology above release history. | Reach was designed and released later, so this route changes the intended introduction and can reveal context early. |
Why release order is the safer first choice
Release order controls when the games introduce ideas, perspectives, and twists. It also follows Halo Support’s explicit starting instruction: begin with Combat Evolved Anniversary. For someone arriving from an adaptation, that simple path minimizes decisions and supplies the clearest historical view of the franchise.

Choose Reach first if you already know the original trilogy or care most about a timeline that moves forward inside the fiction. Because Reach is set just before Combat Evolved, it can serve as a prologue. It is an alternate experience, not a correction to the release-order recommendation.
If you want to play only one Halo game
Choose Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. It is the official release-order entry point and the first campaign in MCC, so it gives you the most useful sample of Halo’s original premise without requiring knowledge of later games.
This is a starting-point recommendation, not a claim that Combat Evolved Anniversary is objectively the series’ best standalone game. The official material used for this guide does not provide comparative quality scores or a validated “best single game” ranking. If you enjoy it, continue through MCC in release order rather than jumping directly to a sequel.
How to start the campaigns in MCC
- Install or launch Halo: The Master Chief Collection on a supported PC or Xbox platform. Xbox describes the collection as an integrated six-game package for PC and Xbox One.
- Open MCC’s campaign selection area and choose Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.
- Play the campaign to completion before selecting Halo 2. Continue through the six entries in the release-order table.
- Use the collection’s individual campaign tiles when you are ready to move on; do not assume that the menu’s chronological placement is a required order.
- Check the storefront for your region, platform, edition, and current availability before purchasing. The cited official material does not establish regional pricing, inventory, or subscription inclusion.
The exact options visible can vary by platform and installed content. The important choice is the campaign title, not a particular menu layout.

What to expect when moving from the TV series to the games
Shared universe, different adaptation choices
The show and games draw on the same broad Halo setting: humanity’s 26th-century conflict with the Covenant and the presence of Master Chief. They are presented through different media and should be approached as separate versions of that universe unless an official source says otherwise.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Do not look for a season-two game sequel
MCC is not marketed as a game continuation of the television episodes. Xbox recommends it because it contains the franchise’s foundational campaigns, not because one of its missions begins at the show’s season-one ending. This distinction prevents a common disappointment: expecting the first game to reproduce the show’s exact character arcs.
Expect the games to establish their own context
Game campaigns explain their conflicts through interactive missions, objectives, and playable viewpoints. You may recognize names from the series, but the order in which information is revealed belongs to each game’s campaign. Let the opening game teach you its terminology instead of relying on assumptions from the adaptation.
Halo: Campaign Evolved and the newer remake question
Xbox Wire announced Halo: Campaign Evolved as a full remake of the Combat Evolved campaign. The announcement names a 2026 release window and lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Cloud Gaming among the platforms.
That announcement does not by itself establish that the remake is currently playable, available for purchase, or open for preorder. Treat it as an upcoming-product update and verify an official storefront before making it your first purchase. Until availability is confirmed, MCC remains the established collection described by Xbox and Halo Support, and Combat Evolved Anniversary remains the practical release-order starting point.
A quick decision framework
| Your priority | Choose | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You are new to the games after watching season one. | MCC, starting with Combat Evolved Anniversary. | It follows Halo Support’s release-order guidance and includes six campaigns. |
| You want the franchise as it originally unfolded. | Release order through all six MCC campaigns. | It preserves each game’s introduction and the original trilogy’s buildup. |
| You care most about fictional chronology. | Reach first, then Combat Evolved Anniversary and onward. | Reach is set shortly before the first game. |
| You want one game before committing. | Combat Evolved Anniversary. | It is the collection’s release-order foundation. |
| You are considering the 2026 remake. | Check official availability for Campaign Evolved first. | The announcement supplies a window and platforms, not confirmed current store status. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the show is game canon in a one-to-one sense. It is an adaptation in the Halo universe; the campaigns are their own story sequence.
- Starting with Reach solely because it is a prequel. Chronological order is valid, but release order is the simpler official onboarding route for newcomers.
- Skipping Combat Evolved for a later sequel. Later entries rely on foundations established in the first campaign.
- Interpreting the collection’s six campaigns as six interchangeable introductions. They occupy different points in the franchise’s release and story history.
- Buying an announced remake without checking status. Campaign Evolved has a 2026 announcement window, but the cited announcement does not confirm present availability or regional purchasing details.
- Expecting a current price or subscription answer from this guide. Official materials cited here do not establish regional pricing, store inventory, or subscription inclusion, all of which can change.
The bottom line for viewers ready to play
Install or buy Halo: The Master Chief Collection, select Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, and continue through Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4. This route is the clearest bridge from the television adaptation to the games because it follows Halo Support’s release-order advice and uses the six-campaign collection Xbox recommends for post-show players. Choose Reach first only when in-universe chronology matters more to you than the way the games originally introduced Halo.
