Begin with dynamic resolution, render_scale = 0.75 (480×360 internal rendering), anti-aliasing and per-pixel lighting disabled, and high_res_hud = false. That profile delivers roughly 40–55 fps in many campaign scenes, 60-fps menus, and the most consistent performance available on the handheld. Map the two analog sticks to movement and aiming, then arrange the remaining actions around the buttons you can reach without moving your thumbs.
What actually runs Halo on the RG35XX H
The practical solution is a community ARM64 port of Halo: Combat Evolved built for H700 handhelds. Install and launch it under Knulli or through PortMaster. This is a native port, not an Xbox emulation setup, so it has its own configuration, map extraction and multiplayer behavior.

You must supply your own legally obtained Halo game data. On its first launch, the port copies the required maps from your disc image and builds a cache. That initial process takes extra time and storage; leave about 3GB free on the card. Later launches are faster because the extracted maps and cache are already present.
Recommended Free Tools
The project documentation lists online co-op and multiplayer, with play over the internet or a local network. It also provides offline modes, a server browser and PC-compatible menus. Multiplayer therefore depends on the port’s networking implementation rather than an emulated Xbox system menu.

Recommended performance profile
Start with the documented default profile rather than chasing maximum sharpness. Enable dynamic resolution and set render_scale = 0.75. The game then renders internally at 480×360 before scaling to the RG35XX H’s 640×480 screen.
| Setting | Starting value | What to expect | Why use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dynamic resolution | Enabled | Resolution can adjust as the scene becomes more demanding. | Protects frame-time consistency during multiplayer action and large battles. |
render_scale |
0.75 | 480×360 internal rendering; about 40–55 fps in many campaign scenes. | Best balance of image clarity and stable performance on the H700 GPU. |
| Anti-aliasing | Disabled | Edges are less filtered. | The Mali-G31 GPU cannot spare the feature’s cost on this handheld. |
| Per-pixel lighting | Disabled | Lighting uses the lower-cost path. | Avoids a substantial graphics load in a small performance budget. |
high_res_hud in [display] |
false |
Uses the standard HUD resolution. | Preserves memory and roughly one frame per second compared with the high-resolution HUD option. |
Why 0.75 is the sensible default
At this profile, menus can reach 60 fps, while campaign play commonly sits around 40–55 fps. Heavy scenes are more variable: the beach battle can dip into the high-30s or low-40s. Those figures describe the published handheld profile, not a guaranteed lock in every map or network match.
A render_scale of 1.0 produces a sharper image but is substantially more variable and slower in demanding scenes. It is useful as an experiment when a scene is light, not as the default multiplayer setting. In a competitive match, consistent frame pacing is generally more valuable than extra internal pixels.

HUD and lighting trade-offs
Keep anti-aliasing and per-pixel lighting off. The release notes specifically leave them disabled because the Mali-G31 MP2 graphics processor has little performance headroom. Enabling them may improve a particular visual effect, but the documented handheld profile does not budget for that cost.
Set high_res_hud = false in the [display] section unless a clearer HUD is worth a small memory increase and an estimated loss of about one frame per second. The standard HUD is the safer choice when multiplayer smoothness matters more than interface sharpness.
Apply the settings
- Prepare the system. Run a Knulli installation or a PortMaster-based setup that supports the H700 ARM64 Halo port. Confirm that the handheld has working Wi-Fi before attempting online play.
- Free storage. Reserve approximately 3GB on the microSD card for first-launch map extraction and cache creation. Do not begin the extraction with the card nearly full.
- Provide your game data. Use your own legally obtained Halo disc image or other data accepted by the port. The first launch copies maps and builds its cache; allow that operation to finish before troubleshooting performance.
- Open the port’s display configuration. Enable dynamic resolution, set
render_scale = 0.75, leave anti-aliasing disabled, leave per-pixel lighting disabled, and sethigh_res_hud = falseunder[display]. - Start an offline game first. A campaign or other offline mode confirms that the maps were extracted correctly before network variables are introduced.
- Test multiplayer. Open the port’s PC-compatible multiplayer menus, choose local-network or internet play, and use the server browser to join or host a session.
- Only then test higher fidelity. If a quiet scene is comfortably fast, you can temporarily test a higher render scale. Return to 0.75 if frame pacing becomes uneven, especially during firefights or large outdoor encounters.
The exact menu labels can vary with the Knulli or PortMaster build. The important values are the documented configuration keys and the order: finish extraction, verify offline play, then tune network play.

Control layout for Halo multiplayer
The port reads the handheld’s controls from EmulationStation, so there is no single mandatory button map. Use the following as an ergonomic starting point and adjust it to your hands.

|---|---|---|
| Left analog stick | Movement | Keeps navigation and strafing under the thumb that naturally rests on the left side. |
| Right analog stick | Camera and aiming | Allows simultaneous movement and target tracking, which Halo’s encounters require. |
| Triggers | Primary firing and grenade actions | Analog triggers are easy to reach while both thumbs remain on the sticks. |
| Most reachable face buttons | Jump, crouch and reload | These actions are frequent and should not require a grip change. |
| Remaining face or shoulder buttons | Melee and weapon swap | Assign the less frequent actions to buttons that are still reachable without releasing the sticks. |
Prioritize reach over tradition
Do not copy an Xbox layout mechanically if it makes you lift a thumb from the right stick to reload or melee. In multiplayer, the practical test is whether you can aim, fire, jump or crouch and swap weapons without changing your grip. Put the actions you use in emergencies on the easiest face or shoulder buttons, then place less frequent commands farther away.
Verify every action in a safe mode
After changing the EmulationStation mapping, start an offline mode and test movement, camera control, firing, grenades, jump, crouch, reload, melee and weapon swap individually. A mapping that feels correct in the menu can still put a trigger or shoulder button on the wrong in-game action. Correct it before joining an internet match.

External controllers and TV play
The RG35XX H hardware supports 2.4G wireless controllers, wired controllers and Bluetooth controllers. It also supports HDMI output to a television. These options are useful for a second player or for longer sessions when the small handheld controls become tiring.
When an external pad helps
- Use a second compatible controller when local multiplayer requires more than the built-in controls.
- Choose wired, Bluetooth or 2.4G based on the controller you already own; the hardware specification confirms support for all three connection types.
- Use HDMI output when a larger screen makes aiming or reading the HUD easier.
The available documentation does not publish standardized latency measurements for the three controller connection methods, so no one connection can be declared universally fastest. Test the controller and display combination you intend to use, and keep the handheld’s original mapping available as a fallback.
Networking and multiplayer setup
Internet play
The port’s release documentation describes online play over the internet and includes a server browser. Connect the RG35XX H to a working Wi-Fi network, open the multiplayer menu, and browse for a compatible session. The server browser and PC-compatible menus are part of the port rather than an Xbox dashboard.

Local-network play
For a LAN match, place the handheld and other players’ devices on the same local network, then use the multiplayer browser to find the host. If a session does not appear, confirm that every device is using a compatible port build and that the host is actually advertising a game before changing graphics settings.
Separate network problems from performance problems
A low frame rate and a delayed or rubber-banding match are different symptoms. First reproduce a slowdown offline. If the same scene is slow offline, adjust render scale and effects. If offline play is smooth but online play is unstable, investigate Wi-Fi, the selected host and network compatibility instead of raising or lowering graphics settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What performance to expect
| Situation | Documented behavior | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Menus | Up to 60 fps | The interface is lighter than gameplay and should feel responsive. |
| Typical campaign scenes at dynamic resolution and 0.75 scale | About 40–55 fps | This is the practical baseline for judging the port. |
| Demanding scenes such as the beach battle | High-30s to low-40s fps | Short dips are expected; they do not necessarily indicate a bad installation. |
| 1.0 render scale in demanding scenes | Substantially more variable and slower than 0.75; exact fps not stated. | Use only if you accept less consistent performance for sharper rendering. |
These are reported ranges, not a promise of a fixed frame rate in every multiplayer map. Match size, scene complexity and network conditions can all change what you perceive. Use the 0.75 profile as the reference point when deciding whether a change helped.
Troubleshooting checklist
The game will not start or maps are missing
- Confirm that the port received your own legally obtained game data in the format it expects.
- Check that roughly 3GB of free card space remained for extraction and cache creation.
- Launch again and allow the first map-copy and cache-build process to complete before closing the application.
Menus are smooth but matches stutter
- Keep dynamic resolution enabled.
- Return to
render_scale = 0.75if you changed it to 1.0. - Verify that anti-aliasing and per-pixel lighting are disabled.
- Set
high_res_hud = falseif the high-resolution HUD was enabled.
The image is clear but frame pacing is inconsistent
The usual cause is an overly high render scale. The documented comparison shows 1.0 is more variable in demanding scenes. Revert to 0.75 and retest the same area rather than judging from a quiet menu.
Controls feel wrong in a match
- Return to EmulationStation’s controller mapping and confirm the left stick is movement and the right stick is camera/aim.
- Check triggers for firing and grenade actions.
- Move jump, crouch, reload, melee and weapon swap onto the face or shoulder buttons you can reach while keeping both sticks engaged.
- Test all actions offline before rejoining multiplayer.
A multiplayer server does not appear
- Verify that Wi-Fi is connected and that you selected the intended internet or local-network mode.
- For LAN play, confirm every player is on the same network and running a compatible port build.
- Use the server browser rather than expecting an Xbox-style console lobby.
- If offline play is also slow, fix the graphics profile first; networking cannot compensate for a rendering bottleneck.
RG35XX H hardware limits that shape these settings
| Component | Specification | Setting implication |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 3.5-inch 640×480 IPS | 0.75 scale renders at 480×360 and is then scaled to the panel. |
| CPU | H700 quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 at 1.5GHz | Provides the ARM64 platform used by the native port. |
| GPU | Mali-G31 MP2 | Explains why anti-aliasing and per-pixel lighting remain off in the recommended profile. |
| Memory | 1GB RAM | Makes the standard HUD the safer choice when every frame matters. |
| Wireless and expansion | 2.4/5G Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, dual TF/microSD slots, expansion up to 512GB | Supports online play, wireless controllers and sufficient card capacity for the port’s cache. |
| Video and controllers | 2.4G wireless and wired controller support; Bluetooth controller connection; HDMI TV output | Enables external multiplayer controls and a larger-screen setup. |
Quick pre-match checklist
- Halo’s native H700 port is installed through Knulli or PortMaster.
- Your own game data has been copied and the first-launch cache has finished building.
- At least about 3GB remains free on the card.
- Dynamic resolution is enabled.
render_scale = 0.75.- Anti-aliasing and per-pixel lighting are disabled.
high_res_hud = falseunder[display], unless you deliberately accept the cost.- Left stick moves, right stick aims, triggers handle firing and grenades, and face/shoulder buttons cover jump, crouch, reload, melee and weapon swap.
- Wi-Fi is connected for internet or LAN play, and external controllers are paired if needed.
The Bottom Line
Use the native H700 Halo CE port with dynamic resolution at render_scale = 0.75, keep anti-aliasing and per-pixel lighting off, and leave high_res_hud disabled for the most reliable multiplayer performance. Map the two sticks to movement and aim, verify the remaining actions offline, and reserve about 3GB for the first map extraction and cache build.
