Formation guides identify three troop types for squad building: Tank, Aircraft (also called Air), and Missile Vehicle. In addition to the roles each hero fills, the number of heroes sharing a troop type can affect the squad’s reported composition bonus.

When a mono-type squad is the right default
If you have five viable heroes of the same troop type, try them as a squad while preserving the two-front, three-back role structure. The reported +20% bonus for five same-type heroes is the highest same-type composition bonus in Last War Vault’s 2026 list. That makes mono-type a useful default when it does not force you to sacrifice essential frontline defense or backline damage and support.
“Viable” is the key qualification. A same-type lineup is not a sound choice just because it reaches the highest listed bonus. Compare the heroes you can actually field: if matching types leaves you without two credible defenders, or replaces a much stronger developed attacker or support hero with a weak option, the role and roster trade-off may matter more than the composition bonus.
Guide-reported bonuses beyond the five-hero composition
Last War Hub separately describes a same-type bonus tied to an Exclusive Weapon at Lv20 and a mono-squad stat bonus unlocked after Capital occupation at HQ32. How to build the best squad from your own roster
- List the heroes you can field. Start with unlocked heroes and take their current development into account. Do not plan around a hero you do not have or assume an underdeveloped option is an upgrade solely because it matches a troop type.
- Choose the frontline first. Select two heroes whose primary job is defense and place them in the front row. If your proposed lineup does not have two credible defenders, reconsider the lineup before optimizing its troop-type count.
- Fill the back row by role. Place attackers and support heroes in the three back positions. Check that the squad still has useful damage and support rather than treating all five slots as interchangeable.
