Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor the best mix of 4K detail and HDR from an IPS screen, consider the Acer Nitro XV275K P5biipruzx, a 27-inch mini-LED model. For most PC gamers, the more practical pick is the 27-inch, 1440p ASUS ROG Strix XG27ACS: its 180Hz Fast IPS panel is a better fit for mainstream gaming budgets and GPUs. Neither is a universal winner. Mini-LED adds local-dimming trade-offs and 4K demands more from your graphics card; conventional IPS is less convincing for HDR and dark-room contrast. If deep blacks and cinematic HDR matter most, compare OLED monitors too.
Our IPS gaming monitor picks at a glance

RTINGS’ 27-inch guide includes the Acer and ASUS among relevant options.
Best overall non-OLED IPS: Acer Nitro XV275K P5biipruzx
The XV275K is the most compelling direction if you want an IPS monitor to do more than display a bright, sharp SDR image. It pairs 4K resolution with mini-LED backlighting, which can dim separate screen zones and create stronger highlights and dark-scene separation than an ordinary edge-lit IPS monitor. Acer’s US product page is the place to confirm the precise model and supported inputs.
Mini-LED is a backlight technology, not a different LCD panel type: the image is still formed by an IPS panel. Local dimming can improve HDR, but it does not give each pixel independent light control as OLED does. Bright objects against dark backgrounds may show halos, and dimming around small windows or subtitles can be noticeable. Zone count and dimming algorithms matter; the label “mini-LED” alone does not establish how well a particular monitor handles these cases.

- Look for independent testing of HDR behavior and desktop local dimming, not just an HDR label or peak-brightness figure.
RTINGS lists the XV275K among strong non-OLED 27-inch options, but “best overall” here means best fit for a buyer prioritizing 4K and mini-LED HDR while staying with IPS; it is not a claim that it beats OLED on contrast or motion. RTINGS’ 27-inch recommendations provide the broader comparison.
Best 1440p IPS for most gamers: ASUS ROG Strix XG27ACS
The XG27ACS is a sensible starting point for a gaming PC built around 1440p. Its 27-inch Fast IPS panel runs at 180Hz, and ASUS lists adaptive-sync support and USB-C connectivity on the US product page. QHD is sharper than 1080p at this size without imposing 4K’s heavier rendering load, while 180Hz gives capable systems room for smooth motion in games that can deliver high frame rates.
USB-C can simplify connection to a compatible laptop, but check the product specifications for the particular video and power-delivery capabilities you need. A USB-C port does not by itself guarantee laptop charging, a full-featured hub or a particular refresh rate. The same applies to adaptive sync: verify the supported VRR range and which inputs support it.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Where it gives ground
Like other conventional Fast IPS displays, it is not the pick for deep blacks or high-impact HDR. Its HDR400 designation does not mean it has the local dimming needed for strong HDR contrast. In dark scenes, IPS glow and panel-to-panel backlight uniformity can also affect the experience; individual units vary. RTINGS’ direct comparison with the Dell AW2725DM is useful when deciding between these two 1440p models.
Best ASUS alternative: Dell Alienware AW2725DM
The AW2725DM is another 1440p Fast IPS option in the same broad class. It makes most sense when its current price, Dell’s support or warranty service better suits you than the ASUS alternative. Compare the actual offers and exact model rather than assuming one is always the cheaper pick; no stable US price is established here. Dell’s US buying page is the source for its current listing.
Console buyers should pay particular attention to its HDMI limitation. RTINGS reports that the monitor supports most PS5 and Xbox Series X|S signals, but lacks HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and therefore does not support 4K/120Hz signals. A high PC refresh-rate headline is not evidence that a monitor accepts every console mode. Check the AW2725DM review and confirm the resolution, refresh rate and VRR combination you need over HDMI.

Best dual-mode IPS: ASUS ROG Strix XG27UCG
The XG27UCG targets a specific kind of player: someone who wants 4K for detailed games and desktop work, but is willing to switch to 1080p for a higher-refresh competitive mode. PC Gamer lists it as supporting 4K at 160Hz and 1080p at 320Hz. See its gaming monitor coverage for that dual-mode positioning.
The fast mode is a trade, not a free performance upgrade. At 27 inches, 1080p is substantially less sharp than 1440p or 4K, so text, fine edges and game detail become softer. This only makes sense if the games you play benefit from very high frame rates, your system can produce them, and you prefer that competitive advantage to image detail. If you will play almost everything at 4K, a conventional 4K high-refresh model may be a better use of your budget.
High-resolution productivity pick: LG 27GM950B-B
RTINGS identifies the LG 27GM950B-B as a high-end 5K gaming monitor with mini-LED backlighting. 5K can provide exceptional desktop detail and ample workspace alongside games, but it also raises the graphics workload substantially compared with 1440p or 4K. Before treating it as a purchase recommendation, confirm that this exact model is available in the US, check its current price, and verify its full specifications. The available product evidence does not establish a complete value or performance verdict. RTINGS’ 27-inch gaming guide is the cited source for its positioning.

IPS, OLED or VA: which panel type fits your games?
| Panel type | What it does well | Trade-offs to consider | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| IPS LCD | Versatile viewing, strong mainstream gaming options and suitability for mixed desktop use | Conventional IPS has modest native contrast; dark-scene glow and unit variation are possible | Players who want a balanced LCD for games and static desktop content |
| Mini-LED IPS | Local dimming can improve HDR highlights and dark-scene separation over ordinary IPS | Blooming and brightness shifts can be visible; results depend on zones and dimming behavior | Buyers who want stronger HDR potential but prefer an LCD |
| OLED | Pixel-level light control, deep blacks, excellent contrast and very fast pixel transitions | Long-term burn-in risk varies with use, panel generation, mitigation and warranty; costs can be higher | Dark-room gaming, premium HDR and motion-first play |
| VA LCD | Often offers higher native contrast than conventional IPS | Some models show dark-level smearing; response behavior varies by product | Buyers prioritizing black levels in an LCD and who have checked motion testing |
OLED models frequently lead general gaming-monitor rankings because of their contrast, HDR and motion performance. Choosing IPS is a preference for LCD characteristics—not a claim that IPS is universally better. OLED burn-in is a risk rather than an inevitability, and its likelihood depends on usage and display safeguards. RTINGS’ gaming-monitor coverage reflects the strong OLED presence in overall rankings.
There is no universal “better for your eyes” panel type. Comfort depends on factors such as brightness, reflections, viewing distance, flicker behavior and individual sensitivity, not the IPS label alone.

Match resolution to screen size and GPU
- 27-inch 1440p: the mainstream balance of sharpness, GPU demand and high-refresh availability. The XG27ACS and AW2725DM are relevant options.
- 27-inch 4K: a strong fit for detailed single-player games, text clarity and mixed work, if your GPU can handle it. Mini-LED models such as the Acer XV275K add HDR potential.
- 1080p: still useful for esports, lower-end graphics cards and smaller 24–25-inch screens. At 27 inches it is a conscious choice for frame rate or price over pixel density.
- Ultrawide and larger screens: assess them separately. Their resolution, desk-space and GPU requirements change the comparison.
Buy refresh rate for your actual frame rates
For 1440p, 144–180Hz is an excellent mainstream target. 240Hz can help competitive players with a GPU and games capable of sustaining high frame rates. Above 300Hz is a specialist choice with diminishing returns for many players. Refresh rate is not the same as response time: an advertised “1ms” claim does not mean every pixel transition is that fast at every refresh rate or overdrive setting. Look for measured response behavior, overshoot and input lag rather than relying on the box.

Judge HDR by dimming and performance, not the label
Ordinary IPS monitors without meaningful local dimming are primarily SDR choices, even when they accept an HDR signal. HDR400 or HDR10 branding alone does not ensure convincing highlights or blacks. Mini-LED can provide a significant step up, but check for blooming around subtitles and small bright objects, how dimming behaves on the desktop, and whether the feature works with your chosen refresh rate and input. OLED offers a different HDR advantage through pixel-level control, with its own trade-offs.
Check adaptive sync and every connection
Confirm FreeSync or G-SYNC compatibility, the VRR range, and whether it works over the input you will use. For consoles, verify HDMI support for the specific resolution and refresh rate—especially 4K/120Hz—rather than inferring it from DisplayPort or a headline refresh figure. Check whether HDR changes the available refresh modes. For laptops, validate USB-C video and charging specifications; for multi-device desks, check hub or KVM features rather than assuming they are included.
Account for ergonomics and desktop work
For a monitor that also displays documents and browser windows, consider pixel density, text rendering, glare, height adjustment, swivel, pivot, stand footprint and VESA mounting. Check speakers or headphone output if you need a simple audio path. Wide-gamut screens can oversaturate ordinary content unless they offer a useful sRGB mode or work well with color management. Static desktop use is one reason some buyers prefer IPS to OLED, but it does not make IPS automatically more comfortable.
Before you buy: a practical checklist
- Confirm the exact model suffix and US version; similarly named regional variants can differ in ports, refresh rates or backlights.
- Check today’s price, seller and stock. A sale can change which 1440p option is the better value.
- Read the return policy, dead-pixel policy and warranty terms before ordering.
- Verify HDMI and DisplayPort bandwidth for your intended resolution and refresh rate, including console modes.
- Check VRR compatibility on the input and device you plan to use.
- For mini-LED, look for testing of local dimming, blooming, SDR desktop behavior and HDR tone mapping.
- Review measured pixel response and overshoot at more than one refresh rate; do not treat the advertised response-time figure as a guarantee.
- Make sure the stand fits your desk or that the monitor supports your intended VESA mount.
IPS glow is an angle-dependent glow that is often most apparent near corners in dark scenes; backlight bleed is light leakage associated with panel assembly or frame pressure. Both can vary between units. A photograph of one review unit in a dark room is not a reliable prediction of how every retail monitor will look.
