The best Xbox-controller games on iPhone, iPad, and Android fall into three different groups: games that support a controller natively, games streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming or Remote Play, and games that work only through unofficial touch-mapping tools. This guide ranks the first two groups separately so you know whether you are downloading a mobile game or streaming an Xbox title.
For this guide, full support means the controller handles gameplay and essential menus; partial support means some screens still require touch; cloud-only means the game runs remotely; and unofficial mapping is not counted as genuine compatibility.

Best native mobile games
1. Minecraft — best overall
Minecraft Bedrock is the strongest all-round recommendation because its console-derived control scheme maps naturally to an Xbox pad. It suits survival, creative building, multiplayer, and long sessions better than most touch-first games. Mojang explains how to connect a controller to a mobile device in its official controls guide.

- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
The mobile edition is a paid purchase and is not the Java Edition. Touch remains useful for text entry and some device-specific interface tasks, so treat menu and text input as potentially partial rather than assuming every screen is equally convenient.
2. Dead Cells — best action game
Dead Cells rewards precise movement, dodges, attacks, and platforming, making physical controls substantially more practical than touch for many players. Apple includes it in its controller-focused recommendations. The standard mobile release and Apple Arcade’s Dead Cells+ are separate editions; check the listing and subscription status before choosing.
It is deliberately difficult, and controller support does not reduce that difficulty. Version and platform differences can affect interface behavior.
3. Stardew Valley — best cozy, long-play game
Stardew Valley is a good fit when you want a substantial game rather than short touch sessions. Analog movement and physical buttons help with exploration, farming, and combat. Apple lists it among controller-friendly games at its US App Store feature.

4. Call of Duty: Mobile — best competitive shooter, with a model warning
Activision explicitly lists Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S controllers as supported for Call of Duty: Mobile in its controller FAQ. That makes it a stronger recommendation than games described only as accepting a generic Bluetooth pad.
Activision says other third-party controllers may work but are not officially supported. Do not assume every Xbox-branded mobile accessory is equivalent to an official Xbox Wireless Controller. Recognition, matchmaking behavior, and input rules can change with game updates, so check the current version before competitive play.
5. Fortnite — best free cross-platform option
Fortnite has official mobile controller guidance and is also available through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Epic’s mobile page describes current installation and controller information. iPhone/iPad distribution and Android installation routes differ and can change, so date-check the instructions rather than relying on an old download guide.

6. Asphalt Legends — best racing pick
Racing benefits immediately from analog steering, triggers, and physical buttons. Apple includes Asphalt Legends in its controller-oriented coverage. It is free to download with in-app purchases. Driving may feel good while menus or assists remain more touch-oriented, so call it controller-friendly rather than promising perfect full-screen navigation.

7. Brawlhalla — best free fighting game
Brawlhalla is free to download and benefits from a controller for directional movement, jumps, attacks, and timing. Apple lists it as suitable for controller play in its recommendations. A controller improves comfort, not automatically skill or matchmaking results; connection quality still matters.
Apple Arcade: a curated iPhone and iPad route
Apple Arcade is convenient for iPhone and iPad owners who want a subscription catalog with controller-compatible examples. Apple’s current feature highlights NBA 2K26 Arcade Edition, PowerWash Simulator, Crossy Road Castle, Balatro+, Sid Meier’s Civilization VII Arcade Edition, Cult of the Lamb, Disney Dreamlight Valley Arcade Edition, Sonic Dream Team, and Dead Cells+: see the current list.
Availability, editions, and subscription terms can change. Verify the controller icon on each game’s App Store page. Apple Arcade is not an Android solution, and it is poor value if you will play only one title or prefer one-time purchases.
Xbox Cloud Gaming and Remote Play
Xbox Cloud Gaming
Cloud Gaming streams an Xbox game from Microsoft’s servers to a mobile browser or supported app workflow. It greatly expands the library, but a catalog entry does not mean a native iOS or Android download. Access depends on Game Pass eligibility, region, catalog inclusion, network stability, and device performance. Microsoft’s US mobile page lists cloud-service requirements of Android 12 or later, iPhone iOS 14.4 or later, and iPadOS 14.4 or later.
Xbox Remote Play
Remote Play streams games installed on your own Xbox console. The controller sends input to the console while the phone displays the video. It is useful for an Xbox owner who wants access to their personal library, but latency and home-network quality determine whether fast games feel responsive.

- BOLD STYLE, BUILT TO PERFORM — Define your swagger with a wild, head-turning design. Stay elegantly on target with textured triggers built for every moment.
- RUBBERIZED GRIPS — Hold on to the action with rubberized grips on the back cases, designed for comfort and control during long gaming sessions.

Native versus streamed play
| Characteristic | Native mobile game | Cloud or Remote Play |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | On the phone or tablet | On Microsoft’s servers or your Xbox |
| Internet requirement | May work offline where the game permits | Required during play |
| Latency | Primarily device and game dependent | Network and distance dependent |
| Library size | Limited to mobile releases | Xbox catalog or your console library |
How to connect an Xbox Wireless Controller
- Turn on the controller.
- Hold its pairing button until the Xbox logo flashes.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
- Select Xbox Wireless Controller.
- Wait for the connected status before launching the game.
- Open the game’s Controller, Gamepad, Input, or Controls settings.
- Test sticks, triggers, face buttons, and the pause/menu button.
Apple supports Xbox, PlayStation, and MFi-compatible Bluetooth controllers and recommends using the latest iOS or iPadOS available for the device. A controller paired to a console, PC, or another nearby device may reconnect there instead of to your phone.
Recommended Free Tools
If the controller connects but the game does not respond
- Test it in the device’s game-controller settings or another known-compatible game.
- Fully close and relaunch the game after pairing.
- Disconnect it from an Xbox, PC, or other nearby device.
- Forget the controller in Bluetooth settings, then pair it again.
- Update the game and operating system.
- Check the current store listing and the publisher’s support page.
- If using an Xbox-style third-party pad, retry with an official Xbox Wireless Controller.
Do not treat touch-to-button mapping as a guaranteed fix. Mapping can break after updates, produce poor controls, or conflict with game rules. A supported game should recognize the pad without a screen overlay, handle core gameplay consistently, and continue working after a restart. Touch-only text fields, authentication, or occasional menus indicate partial support.

| Setup | Strengths | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Existing Xbox Wireless Controller plus phone clip | One familiar controller for Xbox, PC, and mobile; cheapest route if you already own one | Bulky and top-heavy; clip required |
| Backbone One Xbox Edition USB-C | Attached, portable design for native games, Cloud Gaming, and Remote Play | USB-C only; check phone-case fit and current product price |
| Razer Kishi for Android (Xbox) | Direct USB-C connection, phone-powered operation, and pass-through charging | Android-only; thick cases or unusual USB-C placement may prevent fitting |
Backbone’s official page is here. Its observed US product-page price was $109.99 with a promotional free month of Game Pass Ultimate, but both price and promotion are volatile and must be checked before purchase. Razer states that the Kishi for Android (Xbox) uses USB-C, draws power from the phone, has no wireless smartphone connection, and supports pass-through charging.
USB-C and Lightning phones require different accessories. A case can prevent an attached controller from seating, while a separate Bluetooth controller avoids connector-fit problems. Some games show PlayStation-style prompts even with an Xbox pad; that is a prompt/UI limitation, not necessarily failed compatibility.
How to verify support before downloading
- On the App Store, look for Apple’s controller icon on the exact edition.
- On Google Play, read the current listing and developer support notes for the specific device and version.
- Search the publisher’s support page for the exact controller model, not merely “Bluetooth gamepad.”
- Check whether the listing describes native installation or cloud streaming.
- Confirm whether menus, inventory, text entry, and account screens require touch.
- Recheck after major updates: support can be added, removed, or broken.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do all mobile games support an Xbox controller?
No. Support is title-specific. A phone can pair successfully while a particular game accepts only touch, offers partial input, or recognizes only documented controller models.

Do I need Game Pass to play native mobile games?
No. Games such as Minecraft, Dead Cells, and Stardew Valley can be native purchases or subscriptions. Game Pass is relevant to Xbox Cloud Gaming and its changing catalog.
Can I play controller-compatible native games offline?
Some can, but controller support does not guarantee offline access. Logins, multiplayer, cloud saves, and updates may still require an internet connection.
Will an attached controller fit through my phone case?
Not necessarily. Check the controller’s clearance and connector dimensions; thick cases commonly prevent a secure fit.
Are third-party Xbox-style controllers officially supported in Call of Duty: Mobile?
Activision officially lists Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S controllers. Other third-party controllers may work but are not guaranteed by that documentation.
The Bottom Line
For a native game, start with Minecraft, Dead Cells, Stardew Valley, Call of Duty: Mobile, Fortnite, Asphalt Legends, or Brawlhalla, then verify the current store listing and edition. For the broadest console library, use Xbox Cloud Gaming or Remote Play and expect network-dependent latency rather than native offline play.
